Through the ages, Mother Nature worked alone splashing the countryside with brilliant colors.
In 1983, there were very few sources for wildflower seeds and the seeds that were available were prohibitively expensive. Today, Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg, Texas lends a hand. John R. Thomas, Wildseed's founder and president, knows the importance of beautiful wildflowers along our highways.
The public's love of wildflowers and demands from landscape contractors and the highway department motivated Thomas to turn his sideline turf seeding business into a full-time wildflower farm.
In addition, he developed a machine to plant the tiny seeds and another to harvest them. The new company pioneered the practice of planting wildflowers in rows on large acreage.
The farm has more than 1,000 cultivated acres in Texas and over 200 acres of wildflower fields at its Hill Country headquarters outside of Fredericksburg.
Come and view a real working wildflower farm and stay to shop at Blossoms Boutique, Lantana Nursery and the famous Brewbonnet Biergarten. Fun for the whole family!

The Meadows
Beautifully landscaped flower beds and gardens greet you as you enter The Meadows. The display gardens contain compatible plants that show the homeowner new ideas for possible landscape makeovers. Informative signs for each plant or grouping are prominently displayed and discribe the plant selections and color schemes. Most plants in the Display Gardens are available at the Wildseed Farms plant nursery. A FANTASTIC treat for the avid gardener!
Walking Trails
Our flower fields in bloom are one of the most popular destinations in "The Meadows". Planted for seed production, acres of Texas bluebonnets, corn poppies, verbenas, and many other species are accessible to the public in The Meadows area. We anticipate blooms to appear in late March. Different seasons naturally feature different growth stages of these crops, and a field of red poppies in the springtime may be a field of cosmos or zinnias when you come back for a summer visit!
Trial Gardens
Our Trial Gardens and display gardens are surrounded by a half mile of walking trails, which in turn are surrounded by acres of production crops. Wide and wheel chair accessible, the walking trails allow you to stroll at your leisure and see some of the plant you may want to grow at home. Covered sitting areas are photo opportunities in their own right, surrounded by flowers, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Sit a spell and witness the peace of a visit to nature.
The Butterfly Gardens
Hundreds of native Texas butterflies inhabit our open air Butterfly Gardens
Butterflies are wondrous brightly colored insects with two pairs of large, beautiful wings that are covered with iridescent scales.
Like all insects, butterflies have 3 body parts, six jointed legs, compound eyes, an exoskeleton and a pair of antennae. The Lone Star State is home to more than 400 species of butterflies.
The Butterfly Gardens at Wildseed Farms is designed to create a biological system or habitat that attracts, protects, and nourishes the butterfly through all four stages of its life.
Butterflies need food (plants and flowers), water, shelter and host plants on which the female butterfly lays her eggs.
Host Plants are usually species specific.
A butterfly will only lay eggs on a plant variety that her caterpillars will eat as they hatch. A caterpillar's first meal is its own eggshell, but it spends most of its time eating the leaves and flowers of the Host or Larval plant. Nectar Plants provide nourishment for adult butterflies. Most butterflies drink the nectar of a variety of flowers including many Central Texas Natives. You can attract butterflies to your backyard by planting suitable flowers from which they can feed. Many plants that attract butterflies can be purchased in our Nursery.
