Middle Fork Flathead
A spectacular backcountry flight into this whitewater rafting adventure, more wildlife than people, and emerald blue water beckon from Montana's Big Sky country. Thanks to simple logistics and only one other commercial outfitter, the Middle Fork Flathead is our most affordable and pristine wilderness river trip. In addition to the great whitewater, hike to a mountain lake, fish for native trout, and relax around camp for five glorious days in the Great Bear Wilderness of Montana. Departure Month: June, July; Regions: Montana; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: Beginner, Intermediate; Pricing: Above $2000, Between $1500 and $2000.
Overview
"Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful trip down the Middle Fork of the Flathead with your daughter and her crew. They were not only a competent crew, but one heck of a good time to boot." Gary Peterson, Middle Fork Flathead, 2012.
The Middle Fork Flathead, one of the little known jewels of whitewater, is a beautiful 35-mile river journey through the Great Bear Wilderness.
The Great Bear, Bob Marshall, and Scapegoat Wilderness areas make up the third largest wilderness complex in the lower 48. Together with Glacier National Park directly to the north, the Bob Marshall Complex forms the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem. Largely unimpeded by human tinkering, wildlife is plentiful, including grizzly bears, lynx, wolverine, moose, and mountain goats.
The journey begins with a breathtaking flight into Schafer Meadows, a backcountry airstrip nestled in the middle of the wilderness.
After several miles of scenic floating we enter the first rapid series, Three Forks. While earlier trips offer exciting whitewater thrills between quiet pools, later dates provide better fishing opportunities as the water drops and turns to a magnificent aqua green. The Middle Fork has an average gradient of about 35 feet per mile, which translates to punchy Class III-IV rapids on earlier trips and boulder garden rapids during lower flows. We bring oar boats, paddleboats, and at lower water, inflatable kayaks.
Five days and 35 miles means plenty of time to hike, fish the fat and feisty Cutthroat trout at Castle Lake, view wildlife, or simply relax.
We even offer the chance to rock climb and rappel, a trip highlight for many. Accessible only by plane and trail, the Middle Fork Flathead is a true wilderness experience.

Four days of hiking and four days of rafting combine to make a truly unique backcountry experience in the wilds of Montana. Come see for yourself why the South Fork of the Flathead is a guide favorite! Departure Month: June, July; Regions: Montana; Duration: Between 7 and 12 days; Rating: Expedition, High Adventure, Intermediate; Pricing: Above $2000.
Overview
The fishing was unbelievable, the river was perfect, the food was great, the hikes were beautiful and the company was the best.
Speaking for Trent and myself, we did not want the trip to end. We will forever cherish the time we shared in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Steve Page, 2012.
The hike includes clear mountain lakes and a high mountain pass surrounded by majestic snowy peaks and lush green valleys.
This remote valley, deep in the Bob Marshal Wilderness is home to extraordinary wildlife including elk, moose, wolf, eagles, mountain goats, grizzly and black bear. Backpack or let the horses carry your gear and wear only a light daypack. We travel 6 to 10 miles a day through spectacular backcountry and most routes include one day of uphill climbing. Just when your feet are getting a bit heavy, we reach the cool, clear waters of the South Fork.
The river is one of the prettiest and most productive trout streams in North America.
For the first two days the water meanders lazily through a sweeping glacial valley and grand Ponderosa Pines. We dedicate plenty of river time to fishing for one of the purest strains of Westslope Cutthroat trout in the world. Big and plenty, these native fish average 12-20 inches. On one of our trips last summer three people fishing the same hole each caught 20 fish in under an hour! On the third day of the float we enter Meadow Creek Gorge and the character of the river changes dramatically. The narrow, limestone gorge allows only paddleboats on this section of river and for six miles the water crashes through a series of class III to V rapids (this section is optional). One day of the South Fork's whitewater is enough adrenaline for the whole trip! The final night is a celebration of our amazing adventure around a roaring campfire. The last day includes a casual float and fishing from the boat. Join us for eight wonderful days in the incredible Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana.

Overview
Ranked #1 for Top 10 Whitewater Rafting Adventure in the World by National Geographic!
Dave, Christian and I are still mentally on the Alsek - we can't let go of that experience yet.
We each had the time of our lives. We are deeply indebted to you for showing us the Alsek, and for doing it in such a caring way it was truly a "Class act." Elizabeth Danish, 2012.
The Upper Alsek River is an incredible journey through the largest contiguous protected park in the world.
The Alsek begins in Kluane National Park in Canada's Yukon, winds through the Tatshenshini-Alsek Wilderness Provincial Park in British Columbia, and ends in Alaska's renown Glacier Bay National Park. It is protected within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which encompasses all of the Parks.
Photography possibilities on the Alsek are endless.
Wildlife is abundant in this protected landscape, including: bears, wolves, moose, deer, dall sheep, mountain goats, eagles and occasionally a wolverine. Wild flowers blanket the sidehills giving this massive landscape a delicate side as well. The incredible side hikes on this trip should not be missed. On these walks you have a chance to discover small lakes of clear water, walk on giant sand dunes, glass for wildlife, take advantage of photo opportunities, walk on a glacier, study up on the variety of wild flowers, just to name a few. For those who'd like the challenge of hiking a peak, we offer a full day hike up Goatherd Mountain or the Nose (weather permitting).

Tatshenshini River
Your 11-day trip on the Tatshenshini-Alsek Rivers will be one of the most memorable journeys of your life. The awesome size, beauty, and remoteness of this land make this Alaska river trip one of the greatest river trips in the world. From its beginnings as a small, rushing whitewater river in the Yukon it builds to the massive size of the combined Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers. From beginning to end this river grows from just a few thousand cubic feet per second to well over a hundred thousand cubic feet per second, the picture: little to huge! The incredible beauty of Alsek Lake combined with many other wonders of the Tatshenshini will surely delight your senses. Departure Month: July, August; Regions: Alaska, Canada; Duration: Between 7 and 12 days; Rating: Expedition, High Adventure; Pricing: Above $2000.
Overview
The Tat's upper reaches offer great hiking and wildlife viewing.
A few accessible trails, lead you into the high alpine country. The vistas from any of these rewarding hikes are well worth the effort. It's breathtaking! Just off the main river are miles and miles of wetland habitat with beaver ponds making perfect nesting grounds for many species of birds. These wetlands also provide great habitat for moose and many other animals. Everywhere you look the ground is covered with a variety of animal tracks.
As major tributaries join, the river grows in size every day.
The Tatshenshini transforms into a braided river with many different channels. Around the sixth day of this 11-day trip we join the Alsek River. In a panoramic view of the Tat/Alsek confluence you can see over 27 glaciers!
There is more great hiking in the lower section.
Also there is an opportunity to walk on the ancient ice of the Walker Glacier, a short hike from the river. Alsek Lake is impressive, massive glaciers calve off huge chunks of ice into the lake. We'll have the opportunity to paddle around these beautiful icebergs. The last night's camp has an incredible view of Alsek Lake, with icebergs drifting in the foreground. Views of the lake are usually the final climax of the trip. Mount Fairweather towers above the lake at over 15,000 ft, making it one of the highest coastal mountains in the world! Lake, icebergs, and huge mountains all make for quite a site to see! Experience this special part of Glacier Bay National Park that only a lucky few ever see.

Jarbidge Bruneau
Idaho has secrets. The Jarbidge Bruneau River is one of the best kept. This slice of desert paradise is known for its technical whitewater and stunning scenery. Rock spires, brilliant colors and some big fun on the water draw those looking for both a serene setting and high adventure. Departure Month: May; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: High Adventure, Intermediate; Pricing: Between $1500 and $2000.
Overview
The Jarbidge originates on the remote border of Idaho and Nevada at the base of the Jarbidge Mountains.
Spring run-off sends this creek size river into a frenzy of fast corners and big, technical whitewater. Surrounded by steep canyon walls and juniper forests, it tumbles about 50 ft. per mile creating one of the best whitewater runs in Idaho. Several sections are continuous class III IV rapids with at least one portage at Jarbidge Falls. The rafting season here is strictly in May as we need the higher water to navigate the rafts. Given the remoteness and technical whitewater, we usually have the canyon all to ourselves. A great river trip for the whitewater enthusiast! We use 12' oar boats with one guide and one guest to navigate the challenging whitewater. You won't find a guide to guest ratio like this anywhere else, and the trip is limited to 6 guests.
The beautiful high desert plateau comes alive in early spring with delicate desert wildflowers and a wide array of whistling songbirds
birds of prey, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, baby goslings and coyote. There are great hiking and exploring opportunities along the way. Visit a natural arch, hike up to the canyon rim for a breathtaking vista, or lie down by the waters edge and watch the falcons and swifts fly over our heads. As we pass the confluence of the West fork of the Bruneau, we enter the narrow, red walled gorge. Stunning side canyons provide us the perfect afternoon outing and delicious dutch oven dinners around a campfire to relive our adventures. Five Mile Rapid is the grand finale.

Lower Owyhee River
The Owyhee River bends and twists through the Owyhee Canyonlands with mild to wild whitewater rafting in southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon. This canyon offers dramatic desert canyon scenery, excellent hiking, and a feeling of peace and seclusion that makes it easy to leave the outside world behind. The lonely Owyhee is some of the most remote river in the lower 48, and was recently designated wilderness in 2009. The Owyhee Initiative, which was passed in 2009, designated 517,000 acres as wilderness and 317-miles of the Owyhee and Jarbidge Bruneau River systems as Wild and Scenic Rivers. Departure Month: May; Regions: Oregon; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: Beginner, Intermediate; Pricing: Under $1500.
Overview
Owyhee River was listed as one of America's Best Adventures by National Geographic in 2010!
There are more than 250 miles of navigable river in the Owyhee Canyonlands!
Each offers endless hiking opportunities, wildlife, whitewater, pioneer history and a glimpse into geologic time. The time to see the Owyhee is in the spring during the snowmelt runnoff when wildflowers are blooming, the red-wing black birds are singing and the rapids get exciting. A hike to the rim to spot an antelope in the distance, an eagle chasing its prey or just admiring the "awesome vastness" of this country can be a highlight of the trip. We have extensive experience on many different sections. These include the South Fork, East Fork, Main and Lower Owyhee. There are many different sections and access points to these canyons, which create endless possibilities.
The Lower Owyhee
This canyon has more open country than the upper sections with some amazing colors in the Chalk Basin area. The Lower Owyhee has class III whitewater, which makes a great family trip or vacation for all experience levels. It has the best hiking options for easy rim access and amazing vistas. Rock formations in the Lower section are unique and full of vibrant colors. Other attractions include nice camping options, exceptional birding and Native American petroglyphs. We also bring along paddleboats and inflatable kayaks for those who want a little more action! The Lower Owyhee is a great introduction to the Owyhee Canyonlands.
The Lower Owyhee river trip begins in the small country town of Rome, Oregon.
The access to the Lower Owyhee is much easier and logistically simple compared to other sections. We take-out of the river at Birch Creek. Call us for details and we'll make sure you get exactly what you're looking for.

Middle Owthee River
Owyhee River bends and twists through the Owyhee Canyonlands with mild to wild whitewater rafting in southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon. The Owyhee offers dramatic desert canyon scenery, excellent hiking, and a feeling of peace and seclusion that makes it easy to leave the outside world behind. The lonely Owyhee Canyonlands is one of the most remote places in the lower 48, and was recently designated wilderness in 2009. The 317-miles of Owyhee River and Jarbidge Bruneau Rivers included in the Owyhee Canyonlands was also designated Wild and Scenic River as part of this legislation. Departure Month: May; Regions: Idaho, Oregon; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: High Adventure, Intermediate; Pricing: Between $1500 and $2000, Under $1500.
Overview
The Owyhee River was listed as one of America's Best Adventures by National Geographic in 2010!
The Owyhee River's reputation as a big-time whitewater river is well deserved, but there is a quieter side to these beautiful canyons.
In between the rapids there are long calm pools allowing time to take in the 1000 ft sheer wall canyons of the Owyhee. Also, we often see bighorn sheep as we drift along, or surprise them when we are exploring the tight-walled side canyons. We'll also visit some historic trapping and homestead cabins along the way and marvel at the determination of those who carved out a living in this rugged country!
There are more than 250 miles of navigable river in the Owyhee Canyonlands!
We are permitted on many different sections. These miles combine the South Fork, East Fork, and Main Owyhee. There are many different sections and access points to these canyons, leaving the possibilities endless. An adventure into the Owyhee does not only provide an adventure on the river but likely a 4-wheel drive mission to access many of these remote places!
We break down the Owyhee into three sections: Upper Owyhee, Middle Owyhee, and Lower Owyhee.
The Middle Owyhee
The Middle Owyhee
The Middle Owyhee is the Three Forks access to Rome, an impressive 48-mile section. This section has more water, which makes for bigger waves and holes, than the upper section. This can be some of the most exciting wilderness rafting in Oregon! Rapids like Ledge and Halfmile are exciting highlights in this section. Widowmaker rapid is a challenging class V obstacle in this canyon. Depending on water levels guides may line boats or run them through without passengers. In addition to all the whitewater, there is also great hiking to extraordinary vistas, Native American petroglyphs and great side canyons to explore. A great run through Ledge or the afternoon song of the canyon wren on a quiet bench can be a highlight of the day. Looking out over miles of open country really gives you a feeling for what one guest called the "awesome vastness" of this country. Bring an adventurous spirit and be ready for a great time!
When running the Middle Owyhee, one can plan for one thing, but may get dealt a different hand.
Water levels and road conditions can sometimes limit what exact section we run. Road conditions into Three Forks (our launch site) can get seriously muddy with rain, but tend to dry out quickly in the windy, dry desert climate.

Upper Owyhee River
Departure Month: May; Regions: Idaho, Oregon; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: High Adventure, Intermediate; Pricing: Between $1500 and $2000.
Overview
The Owyhee was listed as one of America's Best Adventures by National Geographic in 2010!
The Owyhee River's reputation as a big-time whitewater river is well deserved, but there is a quieter side to these beautiful canyons.
In between rapids there are long calm pools allowing time to take in the 1000 ft sheer wall canyons of the Owyhee. We often see bighorn sheep as we drift along, or surprise them when we are exploring the tight-walled side canyons. The option to stop at historic trapping and homestead cabins along the way allow us to marvel at the determination of those who carved out a living in this rugged country. A hike to the rim to look down into the canyon or spot antelope far off in the sagebrush can be a highlight of the trip. Looking out over miles of open country really gives you a feeling for what one guest called the "awesome vastness" of this country. There are more than 250 miles of navigable river in the Owyhee Canyonlands! These miles combine the South Fork, East Fork, Main, and Lower Owyhee. An adventure into the Owyhee does not only provide an adventure on the river but likely a 4-wheel drive mission to access many of these remote places!
Upper Owyhee (East Fork)
The Upper East Fork includes Duck Valley Indian Reservation to Three Forks river access. The South Fork of the Owyhee is also included in the Upper Section. The Upper Owyhee is the most technically challenging section of the Owyhee and there are often a few portages and lining projects along the way. This section gets very little use and is an excellent place to see wildlife. It is a rare sight to see anyone else on the East Fork. This section is for someone with a great spirit for adventure and a love for remote places. Definitely a step off the beaten path, but those who seek it out are rewarded in a special way.
Keeping Our Options Open
If the water is too low to put in at Duck Valley, Garat Crossing provides a second access point. Garat is 24-miles below Duck Valley and is a 4-wheel drive mission to get in to the river. Crutcher Crossing is another access point for the East Fork, another 4-wheel drive mission. If for weather or water reasons the East Fork is not an option, the South Fork is a great trip as well. Anyone that plans an Upper Owyhee trip with us or anyone else should be ready for plan B, but as you can see there are many options for a great river trip in this section.
In navigating the Upper Owyhee you can plan for one thing, but you may get dealt a different hand every time.
Water levels and road conditions can sometimes limit which section we run. Get ready for an adventure! To lay eyes on this relatively unexplored and unknown desert canyon is worth the effort!

Bear Valley Lakes Hiking Trip
The Bear Valley Lakes Trailhead is only 10 miles from our Hayden Creek Ranch in the Lemhi Valley. The trail climbs up through the timber for 5 miles and breaks into this beautiful chain of alpine mountain lakes. There are other lakes that are closer to the trailhead as well. The lakes have great fishing and there are excellent hiking opportunities up to the surrounding peaks for terrific vistas. You can hike up to the lakes for a day, or choose to do a longer horse supported camping or backpacking trip. Combined this trip with any Main Salmon or Middle Fork Salmon for a great multi-sport adventure vacation! Departure Month: June, July, August; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: Beginner, Intermediate, Specialty Trips; Pricing: Under $1500.
Overview
There are several different lakes of varying distances from the Bear Valley Lakes Trailhead.
Let us know your interests and we can help customize the right lake trip for you. These trips can be done as a backpacking trip or make it a little easier with horses carrying the camping gear and supplies.
From the lakes there is plenty of exploring to be done in the surrounding areas.
Climbing some of the peaks in the Lemhi Mountains, reaching summits of 10,000 ft will provide great vistas. Once you are at the lakes, you may just want to relax in the beautiful alpine setting reading a book. For any fisherman in the group, these mountain lakes provide incredible fly fishing opportunities for cutthroat trout!
With the Middle Fork Salmon ending in Salmon, Idaho and the Main Salmon starting in Salmon, this is a great add on to your rafting vacation.
Adding this to your river trips vacation, is a great way to add more of a hiking element to your adventure vacation. Both these river trips do offer hiking, but nothing like an all day hike to a mountain lake.
Middle Fork/Main Salmon Combo
The only thing that could make your trip on the Middle Fork any better is making it longer! Don't let the fun stop and continue down the Main Salmon River, the River of No Return, for 5 more days. It's an incredible 11-day trip covering over 180-miles of Salmon River in the vast Frank Church Wilderness area. While you begin in the thick spruce forests of the high-elevation of the Middle Fork, you complete the Main Salmon in mountain desert landscapes and massive sand beaches. It is not only a tour of the heart of Idaho, but a true exploration of the geology and history of this secluded area. Departure Month: June, July, August, September; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 7 and 12 days; Rating: Beginner, Expedition, Intermediate; Pricing: Above $2000.
Overview
The Middle Fork Salmon and Main Salmon combine to form a nearly 200 mile trip through the heart of Idaho and the Frank Church Wilderness.
These two canyons take you from the dense alpine forests in the headwaters, through deep granite gorges to the steep desert, rich with ponderosa pines. Exhilarating rapids and crystal clear pools for fishing and swimming are around every corner. The plentiful hotsprings of the Middle Fork followed by the beautiful beaches of the Main form a trip that is hard to beat. Relax in the oar boat, grab a paddle in the paddleboat, or captain your own inflatable kayak you choose just how much excitement you want. A trip this long is not only a vacation but an exploration and adventure with your family and friends. Idaho, which has flown under the radar for many years, will surprise you with this journey through time and the rich history of this area.
Why continue down the Main?
The Main Salmon is a rare outdoor adventure that pairs a perfect beach vacation with the solitude of a vast wilderness. The July waters warm for great swimming and lounging on the beach. Or grab your hiking boots to explore historic homesteads and the rocky canyon ridge tops. There's rappelling, too, for those looking for a challenge. While our veteran guides have the unique opportunity to navigate many different rivers throughout the summer, the Main Salmon is the one they hold near and dear. Our small group size (15 person max.) means your trip will be customized to your interests. Ask us about charter trips!

Middle Fork Salmon Kayaking
The Middle Fork of the Salmon in the spring is a great time for experienced kayakers to see this renowned Idaho canyon. June high flows bring more waves and fun big-water rapids. There are several nice surfing holes with easy eddies and many big waves to catch on the fly. The Middle Fork is credited for having 100 rapids in 100 miles. Most rapids are class III with some class IV, with many fun wavetrains! A fantastic trip for friends or families of paddlers. Departure Month: June, July; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: High Adventure, Intermediate; Pricing: Under $1500.
Overview
The Middle Fork Salmon is a great kayaking trip! This is perfect for a group of kayakers to spend quality river time together.
If you have always wanted to kayak the Middle Fork but don't have a group to go with, join us as a solo traveler and meet new friends to kayak with. If you have a group of kayakers that just need rafts to carry your gear, we are happy to just be there for raft support as well. There are discounts or custom prices available for larger groups or clubs!
Skills
Of the kayak trips that WRO offers, this is the best trip for kayakers that are intermediate to advanced, or at least comfortable in a whitewater kayak. A decent roll, at least most of the time, is required. This trip is promoted to kayakers, with rafts providing the camping support. If you have a friend that does not kayak that would like to join the trip, we can definitely work that out! For kayakers these are discounted trips in the spring!
Surfing
There are many great surf opportunities along the way. We try to camp at Marble Creek, where there is access to one of the best surf waves in Idaho at the right water levels. The Mist Falls Wave is another incredible surf highlight of the trip. The rafts are for gear support and giving paddlers a break when needed. At least one or two paddle/surf guides or coaches will be in the water with you at all times. There is always plenty of time for relaxing in camp for roll practice, hiking, hot springs and fun camp games like bocce ball, horseshoes, frisbee and spending time with friends.
Kayaks
Most people with experience would likely want to bring a play-boat for surfing. River-running boats would also be nice if you are not into playboating or just prefer the extra comfort and stability. We offer a variety of different kayaks available for rent if you cannot travel to Idaho with your personal boat. Please give us a call at 800.252.6581 and we can customize the trip to your specific interests and abilities.

Main Salmon Kayaking
The Main Salmon is a great beginner/intermediate kayak trip. This trip offers big water pool-drop class III rapids with warmer water than many other western rivers. This combo makes for a great introduction to kayaking! Departure Month: July, August; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: Beginner, Intermediate; Pricing: Under $1500.
Overview
If you are a beginner
You should go to you local YMCA and learn the kayak roll and basic kayak strokes. After you have the basics down and have been out on the river a little, you should be ready for this trip. The rapids are class III, so you should know what you are getting in to. You do not need to be a solid class III boater, just know what class III entails. If you have a pool roll and really want to get after it, aggressive beginners are welcome!
If you are an intermediate kayaker
the Main Salmon will offer you some rapids that are well within your comfort zones, but should still present some challenges. Join us on this trip to get more comfortable in your boat. It is always nice to have an experienced kayaker helping you progress and get more comfortable with your kayaking ability.
Besides the great kayaking experience that this trip offers you, there are many other great opportunities.
On the Main Salmon there are many old homesteads that are fun to explore. Large sand beaches make for not only comfortable camping, but great playing fields for games like horseshoes, bocce ball, and frisbee!
Is kayaking a passion of yours, but not your family or friends?
They are welcome to join this trip as a raft rider. Let them take pictures of you negotiating the rapids. The rafts are also there to provide you a break from kayaking if needed. If swimming situations are tiring you out, the rafts can offer you a nice break!
Come join us for an unforgettable introduction to kayaking!

Jarbidge Bruneau Kayaking
Swift water, boulder garden rapids, blind corners and steep gradients are all packed into this beautiful wilderness canyon. If you are looking for an exciting class IV multi-day run on a creeky feeling river, the Jardidge Bruneau is a great choice for you! Departure Month: May; Regions: Idaho; Duration: Between 3 and 6 days; Rating: High Adventure; Pricing: Between $1500 and $2000.
If you are an advanced paddler and feel comfortable running continuous class III with some solid class IV whitewater, this is great trip for you.
This is not a trip fro beginner kayakers! This small desert river twists and turns its way through a deep rhyolite gorge in southwestern Idaho. The Jarbidge is exciting with swift water and many great boulder garden style rapids.
One of the great benefits to joining this trip is the rafts, which carry all of your personal things, as well as beer and other items that self support boating does not allow for.
When self-support kayaking you have to be a minimalist. Travel with us and you can bring a nice big sleeping bag and tent. Also you get a fire, great food (no ramen or insta-pasta), latrine facilities, etc.. If running this type of river without ever seeing the river makes you nervous, having a kayak guide is great way to travel. Traveling with one of our knowledgeable kayaking guides is a great way to gain confidence and expertise through this technical run.
Once we reach the Bruneau River confluence (day 3 or 4), the whitewater mellows and you can imerse yourself in the dramatic scenery of the canyon.
The Bruneau does have several great rapid sections, but without the continuous feel of the Jarbidge. Downstream the fanale, Five Mile Rapid series will quench any last thirst for whitewater!

Testimonials
Chuck Day, Main Salmon, 2013
I wanted to drop everyone at Wilderness a note to say what a fantastic organization you have and what a wonderful experience I had on the last Main Salmon trip of the season! It was absolutely perfect weather and life on the river cannot be any simpler with such wonderfull support that you provided... It is really gratifying to see a family business truly enjoying what they do, and sharing that joy with all of us. It is very clear in the way you operate, that providing this experience to "us" just comes naturally to you. I can't thank you enough for an incredible week!
Bill Bush, Middle Fork Salmon, 2013
I have had so many great trips with WRO that you would think we could not top what we have had before this trip but we did! This is one of the best trips I have ever had anywhere, anytime!
Elizabeth Danish, Alsek, 2012
Words are inadequate to describe what this experience has been like traveling the mighty Alsek river. We've had enough experiences for a lifetime packed into 12 days. Whatever your gig is it's there...geology, glaciers, enourmous river flow, wildlife, wild flowers, rocks PLUS experienced, highly skilled guides, who took good care of us. Each campsite was beautiful and different. All the meals were delicious with a gourmet presentation. A super well organized, exhilarating and fun trip! Thank you Seth! Thank you John and Keith!
Teresa Sarmina, Middle Fork Salmon, 2012
I read that we may leave the river, but the river never leaves us. The Middle Fork was a wonderful river, and I am happy to keep it in my mind.
Willie Baronet, Middle Fork Flathead, 2012
Five great days on the Flathead River with some good friends and great guides. We took a remarkable hike to the top of Vinegar Mountain...We ate like kings and enjoyed some of the most incredible scenery outside of Glacier National Park, including a breathtaking encounter with a mountain goat and her kid as we rounded one of the last turns of the trip. Won't forget this trip ever!
David Danish, Alsek, 2012
Just wanted to thank you again for one of the most amazing trips I've ever been on. I had an incredible time and am constantly reliving many aspects of it. It was a life-changer! Hopefully we'll be able to join you next year for another adventure on another river.

You'll begin the trip as our guest but end the trip a friend. We don't just guide you through little known treasures of Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Canada, we share it with you. If you love rivers, we're pretty sure you're going to love us. How should you choose a trip? You'll enjoy the personal WRO touch on any of our trips, but some may appeal more to your individual interests.

Pepper was one of the orginal guides at WRO in the early 70's! He has plenty of good stories about how things use to be in the good old days. Pepper left river guiding in the 80's and moved to the bay islands of Honduras to run a dive resort on Barbareta. He lived the island life for 26 years, which has also left him with many great tales of adventure from running off thieves on the island to general day to day life in central America. Afer moving back to the states ten years ago, Pepper has traveled extensively in Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia. Pepper has been spending more and more time in Idaho the past few years and he started guiding a few trips here and there and decided he likes spending more time on the river. Pj Moran
Peter Moran, or PJ, will be guiding trips with WRO starting in the 2013 season. Whitewater kayaking has been a major part of PJ's life from a young age. His passion for whitewater kayaking has taken him on travels not only around Idaho, Montana and the Pacific Northwest, but around the world. PJ has been a rafting guide for the past five years, but on top of that has many more years of river experience. PJ spends his winters as a pro patroller at Mt. Baker Ski resort in Washington. Being on pro patrol requires high levels of first aid (wilderness EMT) and high angle rope work for rescues, which are great skills to have as a river guide too. We are excited to have PJ on the WRO team this coming river season! PJ will be guiding on both the Middle Fork and Main Salmon.
Iris Frye

Getting to spend the summer out of the river is his ideal job and often refers to driving sweep boat on the Middle Fork Salmon as the best job out there. Brandon is the go to sweep boat driver for WRO and has been a great addition to the team. While not on the river Brandon has his own stone mason business, works construction and guides elk hunts in Montana. Brandon recently built a beautiful wooden hybrid dory drift boat and loves to take it out on the river whenever possible. Suggested Gear List Questions
Do I have to bring both hiking boots and running shoes?
For most of our trips you basically need two pairs of shoes...one to wear while in the boat (they will be getting wet!) and a dry pair to wear while in camp. If you are joining us on one of our combination hike/river trips, or you really enjoy hiking off the trail, a good, comfortable pair of hiking boots are essential. It is imperative that these boots are well broke in!!! Nothing is worse than blisters from a new pair of boots!
Why must I have synthetic materials rather than cotton?
While rafting the rivers you will get wet going through the rapids (what fun would it be if you didn't?!) Synthetic materials are lightweight, warm and dry much quicker than cotton. They also keep you warmer when wet than cotton. Comfort is essential to having fun!
Rain gear...what kind should we get if plastic and vinyl are not allowed?
Vinyl and plastic rain gear do not hold up well and there is no place to purchase emergency rain gear on the river. Better to be prepared than wet and cold if caught in an afternoon rain shower. Gortex, waterproof PVC and coated nylon are excellent choices. The Acadia Rainsuit from www.cascadeoutfitters.com 1-800-223-7238 is reasonably priced and will provide the protection you need.
On River Questions
What temperatures can we expect?
The temperatures in Idaho, Montana and Alaska are not always predictable and can fluctuate dramatically in a 24 hour period (freezing at night and 70-80's the next afternoon) therefore we must be prepared for anything. Long underwear, wool caps, gloves, socks and a warm jacket are necessary in case of unexpected weather.
How long will we be floating on the river each day?
Each trip is tailored to the desires of the guests. Generally, about a total of 5 hours each day (give or take a couple of hours), broken by a lunch stop, along with any other exploring adventures.
Will we be at a new camp every day?
Normally, yes, we do change campsites everyday. This allows us to cover new, adventurous sights, sounds and rapids everyday at a fun, comfortable pace. We occasionally will spend a layover day at the same camp on our Middle Fork of the Flathead and Tatshenshini River trips to allow for some awesome side trips.
How will we wash ourselves?
The Middle Fork of the Salmon and the Main Salmon Rivers both have swimming and hot springs to soak in. In an effort to keep soap out of the rivers we wash the old fashioned way...above the beaches with a bucket of water!
Do we have to know how to swim?
No, it increases your fun if you wish to take a refreshing swim in the Salmon River but swimming capabilities are not mandatory. It is however, mandatory that you wear a life vest while on the river in a boat. We provide these.
If we say we want to paddle are we committed to paddling the entire trip?
No, we generally have enough boats that the guests can rotate and have the option to paddle when they wish. However, we only use paddle rafts on our South Fork of the Flathead trip. This trip is a paddleboat only adventure.
Logistics
Is there someplace to store our airplane luggage while we are on the river?
Yes, we can store and make arrangements for your extra bags to be transported to meet you at the end of the trip. We do however, recommend that you leave any unnecessary valuables at home. Your wallet, airline tickets, & other valuables should be placed in a zip lock bag and taken with you on your trip.
When do we need to be there?
You should arrive in the town of departure the day before your trip is scheduled to begin. There will be a meeting, usually around 6pm, with guides and guests to hand out waterproof gear and answer last minute questions. You will head to the river the next morning (the official starting date of your trip.)
How, where and when do we get our fishing licenses?
If you wish to fish, a fishing license is mandatory. It must be purchased in the state you will be fishing in. In most cases, our guests purchase them from a nearby sporting goods store upon their arrival at their hotel the evening before our launch date. If you have questions, please call us.
Is there somewhere to purchase last minute items before heading to the river?
Yes, there are sporting goods stores located fairly close to all the hotels we recommend.

Miscellaneous
What happens if someone gets sick or injured?
All of our river trips have guides with 'First Responder Wilderness Training' certifications. This is an intense, 8-day training course. We also have satellite phone communication and evacuation plans in place for all of our trips, in case of an emergency.
Why are cell phones, computers and hand held computerized games not allowed?
Wilderness experience and computerized gadgets are not a good mix. We are also promoting relaxation, enjoyment and enhancement of the natural senses and awareness of nature's beauty by escaping the everyday stresses associated with our modern computerized world. It is wonderful to watch your child collecting rocks, trying to catch minnows, building creations in the sand and exploring the forests rather than sitting with a video game.
How old does my child have to be to participate?
We generally recommend a minimum age of 8 years for the Main Salmon River and Lower Owyhee River, a minimum age of 10 years for the Middle Fork of the Salmon, minimum age of 12 years for the South and Middle Fork of the Flathead, Upper and Middle Owyhee, and the Tatshenshini, and a minimum of 14 years for the Jarbidge/Bruneau. However, we realize that each child is an individual and we will certainly discuss your child's readiness, as you know your child's responsibility level better than anyone.
What if there is a family emergency back home- how will they locate us?
If you have a family emergency at home someone should notify our office. We will then notify the necessary agency (Forest Service or BLM) of your anticipated location and they will begin the process of notification. If you have situations at home such as elderly, ill or debilitating relatives please alert us before you leave for the river.
How do gratuities for the guide work?
Usually the guides are tipped 10%-15% of the cost of the trip. The guides equally split the total tip amount from the guest. The guides are most appreciative to receive this directly from the guest, either at the end of your trip or when a farewell dinner is possible, so you might want to plan to have some cash on hand. We recommend your wallet and other valuables be stored at the bottom of your duffel.
