Developmental Classes (Ages 5 to 13)
Our Developmental classes are structured around a level-based poster skill chart system. This allows athletes to progress through each level at their own pace. Emphasis is on success and a positive approach to learning, skill acquisition, and participation. We know that not every child desires to become a competitive gymnast, yet every child thrives on a positive experience about themselves and accomplishing personal goals in their gymnastics. A strong base is built, with safety as the primary goal, for future skills whether in gymnastics or another sport. All four events are taught as well as trampoline and strength. Pre-Teams
At TAG, we use the Pre-Team as our beginning levels of Pre-Competitive gymnastics. Gymnasts will grow in the sport by learning skills based on a progressive curriculum. This curriculum will advance them through Levels 1 3 and they will learn parts of the USAG routines. After mastering the skills at these levels, they will have the opportunity to be selected for the competitive team and represent TAG at USAG sanctioned competitions in the Junior Olympic or Xcel programs.
What is a Pre-Team?
Hot Shots / Mighty Mites / Pre-Team. Pre-Teams train students for competitive gymnastics. The goal is to identify eager athletes to determine the level of natural physical readiness and place them in a curriculum based on ability. The higher the level of natural ability, the stronger the candidate is for this kind of accelerated learning program. Natural ability cannot be summarized by any single criteria. We evaluate physical abilities as they pertain to the 4 events in gymnastics. Unlike other sports, gymnastics has a much sooner peak age and Pre-Teams help develop the athlete and provides structure to help them reach their full potential. Early identification of abilities and proper placement is a key component for success in competitive gymnastics.
How do you join?
To become a member of a Pre-team, you must be recommended by a coach. If your child is very interested in this program, an evaluation can be done by a team coach if spots are available at that time.
When are Pre-Team classes offered?
Pre-team includes 3 different groups that are separated by skill level and age: Hot Shots - usually for ages 4 to 5.5 yrs. 2 days per week (2.5 hrs. per week); Mighty Mites - usually for ages 6 to 7 2 days per week (3 hrs. per week); Pre-Team - usually for ages 6.5 and up 2 days per week (3.5 hrs. per week).
Who are the coaches?
Pre-team coaches are comprised of experienced coaching professionals. These instructors meet on a monthly basis to discuss skill training and progressions. This helps pre-team instructors teach using the same terminology, strategy and philosophy.
Benefits of Pre-Team
Possible advancement to competitive gymnastics
Increased event training
Opportunity for Low pressure Fun-Meets

Xcel Program - USAG
Xcel is an alternative USA Gymnastics competitive program offering individual flexibility to coaches and gymnasts. The goal of Xcel is to provide gymnasts of varying abilities and commitment levels, the opportunity for a rewarding and ongoing gymnastics experience.
Xcel program is governed by USAG and Levels consist of Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
At each level, routines have some flexibility to better suit each athlete.
Practice hours include between 4 and 9 hours per week - subject to changes
Compulsory Program - Levels 2 thru 5
Our Compulsory Program centers on solid basics and a foundation of skills with emphasis on form and execution.
Athletes must achieve a set of skills and level of performance to compete for Team Attraction Gymnastics. Gymnasts that compete in levels 2 - 5 are considered "compulsory" gymnasts and follow the routines set by USA Gymnastics, the governing body for gymnastics in the US.
Compulsory gymnasts perform the same routines on each event and are scored based on quality of form and execution of these skills.
As they move up through the levels, the skills performed become more difficult.
These gymnasts train between 6-13 hours per week depending on their level and compete in approximately 6 competitions during the Fall/Winter months at various locations throughout the State of NC.
If a gymnast attains the qualifying score for her level, she will be invited to compete at the "State Championship" as the last competition of the season!
Optional Program - Levels 6 thru 10
Competitive Gymnastics brings more extensive benefits for those athletes that have the potential as well as mind set to train and compete in a more intense environment.
Starting at Level 6, a gymnast is considered an 'optional' gymnast meaning their routines are original and choreographed to suit the gymnast as an individual.
There are certain skills, combinations and dance sequences that each level requires.
The degree of difficulty is fulfilled using various skills within the gymnasts range and style. These gymnasts will compete in approximately 6 meets throughout the Winter and Spring Months. Levels 7 thru 10 can also qualify for post-season meets including Regional and National meets.
Often times, these gymnasts will travel outside of NC to various high profile competitions to compete against girls within their levels from different states!
If the gymnast attains the qualifying score, she will be invited to compete in the State Championship, which there, she has a chance to qualify to Regional and National competitions within her level.
