Seasonal & On-Demand Offerings
Beach Yoga
If you like the feeling of being challenged, but also want to spend some time soaking up those Tahoe rays this is the class for you. We practice on the sand. Bring your beach towel instead of a mat. Sessions vary between active Hatha and slow Vinyasa. Skilled practitioners may be offered inversion options. Arrive prepared to salute and soak up the sun.
Paddle Yoga
Our Paddle Yoga practice is the best in Tahoe. We offer more than poses on a paddle board. These practices incorporate paddling skills, education, balance, mindful focus, and restoration. Beginners are welcome. Practice includes: Board, Paddle, PFD, Guided Paddle, Guided Yoga Asana, Relaxation. Private Sessions Available by Request.
Prepare for and recover from Winter play. Inspired by the tradition of "après-ski," this practice focuses on recovery from your outdoor pursuits. We'll move through a restorative flow to release tension in the muscles and joints that are often used during activities like hiking, climbing, skiing, or biking. We'll emphasize calming the nervous system, helping you to find ease and reset after your adventures. Leave feeling rejuvenated, grounded, and ready for your next escapade.
Balance Building (Balance)
Age with grace by maintaining and improving balance. Steadiness and balance are important at every age. Balance keeps us steady as we walk or hike, bike or run and as we move throughout our daily activities. Using INDO BOARD® balance boards and the tools of the practice including blocks, straps, chairs and walls, we test and challenge our balance. Improve your proprioception, develop body awareness and reduce your risk of injury by improving your balance. On-Demand Session.
Chair Practice (Hatha)
Tools can increase accessbility or challenge. We'll use this familiar tool to engage in yoga posturing to both create ease and increase difficulty. You'll learn to sit properly, sit and stand with engagement, improve your balance and attempt positions that challenge you. All ages and abilities are welcome to join. You'll be surprise by how a simple tool like a chair can increase your awareness of how you use your body.
Flow Into Stillness (Hatha)
Develop steadiness and ease to build your practice. This practice is designed to help you transition from the busy energy of your day to the calmness of your evening. We'll move through a series of restorative postures to release stagnant energy and tension. Deep stretches and a restful savasana will prepare your body and mind for a peaceful night.
Divine Rest (Restorative)
Go deeper with sound. Rest differs from sleep. Our bodies and minds rejuvenate during sleep, but don't necessarily quiet. Yoga nidra is a practice of mindful relaxation that addresses the various layers of ourselves. The unique and ethereal sounds of the crystal singing bowls vibrate the energy surrounding and within. The combined experience encourages your body, mind and energy to shift to a slower, calmer and more steady level of vibration. You'll sense your entire self releasing, relaxing and reharmonizing.
Gentle Weekend Flow (Hatha)
Welcome the Weekend. Welcome a relaxing or adventurous weekend with this gentle morning yoga class that combines strength, balance, and focus. All are welcome in this practice that encourages intentional movement with mindful focus. Apply yoga asana, breath and focus to your morning and feel prepared for whatever your day includes.
Pranic Practice (Hatha)
Breathe and move with intention and direction. Pranayama is more than a breathing practice. Karma is bound in our pranic body. To release it, we engage in the practice of kriya, or purification. As we move, we create heat, mobility, build strength and connect with our bodies. As we breathe, we direct our awareness from body to breath, and deeper within, through pranayama intended to shift the quality and flow of prana (life force) and loosen the binding of karma.
RajaHatha
Connect Mind & Body. Hatha is the effort of establishing stability. Raja is practice of developing singular focus. Learn how to focus your attention upon your body to feel steady, easy and grounded.
Restoration & Release (Hatha Nidra)
Detach and drift away into Yoga Nidra. Two key elements to the practice of Yoga are abhyasa (consistent practice) and vairagya (detachment). The constant practice of being in a state of stress can result in an inability to detach. To encourage release of tension and stress in the body you'll be guided through deep restorative posturing. To calm your mind and detach from distractions, release into Yoga Nidra. On-Demand Session.
Postural Perfection (Alignment)
Support your active lifestyle with yoga asana. Whatever activities you engage in, your body needs to recover. Practice posturing that will improve your movements, direct your focus, expand your breath, lengthen tight muscles and address imbalances that result. Learn to move in ways that compliment the habitual posturing required for various activities. Keep your body moving well to reduce pain and the risk of injury. On-Demand Session.
Scents & Salutations (Hatha)
Experience the effects of scent during asana. As we move, our bodies warm. This practice is elevated through the application of essential oils. As you move through Yoga asana the scent applied to your body will change in response to your individual constitution. Breathe and observe how smells are effecting your experience of the practice. Notice how essential oils can elevate and awaken or relax and help you to release.
Tarot & Tantra (Flow)
Draw a card, establish focus, become aware of your individual consitution. Whether or not pulling a card from a deck can predict your future, it can provide something to consider and focus upon. Tantra Yoga celebrates the human body and seeks to unite all dualities within the body. This class interconnects these two practices of sankalpa or intention setting. Begin by selecting a card and considering how it aligns with your life. As we move through Yoga asana (posturing) intended to increase awareness of your physical, energetic, emotional and mental status you'll be encouraged to draw connections between the card and your constitution.
Unwind & Unburden (Flow)
Release stress through movement and expansion. Let go of the weight of your day with this unwind practice. We'll start with a gentle warm-up before building heat and fluidity with a continuous vinyasa. As we cool down, we'll focus on grounding postures and deep hip and shoulder openers to help you unburden yourself of stress and leave feeling centered and refreshed.
Vinyasa & Vibrations (Flow)
Let the music move you. Vinyasa Krama translates to mean "order arrangement." The order of postures and arrangment of positions during this practice are established with the intention of assisting with the movement of prana. The cues, sounds and vibrations guide the flow of the practice. As you move through the sequence, your body, energy and mind will be effected by the sounds around you. Let go and move with the music. On-Demand Session.

Practice Yoga Everywhere
"You are not impelled to action by anything other than yourself." The Complete Yoga Vasista. Your teacher is a guide who is ready to light the way, but you must choose to step onto the path.
This is a space in which practice results in change; effort encourages growth and you can reveal your Self.
We practice more than poses. We apply Asana (posturing) as a means for increasing strength and mobility which will allow for direction and control of body. Breathing is intentionally and effort fully moved in ways that stir up that which has become stagnant, rigid or locked. We attempt the practices of Hatha Yoga to understand the many layers of self (koshas). We observe our habits and remove limitations (Kleshas). Every practice is created with the intention of overcoming the barriers that prevent Samadhi (integration).
We are guided by the words of Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra and the explanations within the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
We learn from the sadhu (acestics) who came before us. Yoga is both the means and the end; it is a practice and the goal. You must be consistent, dedicated and devoted. Show up, learn, grow, change and reveal the gem that exists within you; the tiny piece of the universe that connects you to all things: Jivatma. Practice as yourself and you will discover your Self.
Rajahatha Yoga
Rajahatha Yoga
RajaHatha Yoga is an experiential science of yoga that guides its practitioners to Union based upon the ancient paths of Raja and Hatha Yoga. Just as "nothing within or without is static, nothing is permanent except change," so continues the unfolding of the yogic tradition. RajaHatha yoga allows for the individual to seek, express, and experience his or her higher Truth while connecting to the Higher Consciousness that is the ultimate goal of all yogic paths. A strong influence for our studies are ancient texts, in particular the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. We believe study and practice of the ancient texts is second to none. The high consciousness of the great Sages before us influences us today and so to partake of their wisdom is absolute and necessary to continue the conscious evolution begun before us. Constant self-study (svadhyaya), self-removal (meditation), Self-realization, and Higher-Self re-integration are the focus. Through these practices we aim to become liberated from what keeps us bound in the illusion of separation (suffering) and re-discover Real Joy and Bliss. RajaHatha begins by first witnessing the physical and moving beyond its previous limitations, then beyond the mind of limitations (ego), the emotions, and to the Atman (individual soul/truth) to achieve freedom. FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is it like in a Yoga Studio?
According to the ancient texts of Yoga a studio should be "simple, clean, practical and natural" (Hatha Yoga Pradipika Chp.1 Verse 13). We honor this description to the best of our abilities at LTY. Upon entering any Yoga studio you should immediately remove your shoes and there should be a place designated for them and the storage of your personal belongings. Electronics, including smart watches, should not be brought into the practice space. Anything that might distract you from the practice should remain away from your mat. Your personal items should be put somewhere safe and secure. At Lake Tahoe Yoga we lock our doors during the practice so you do not need to worry about your personal items. The entirety of the space is well organized. From the lobby to the bathrooms, it should be obvious that the space has been designed with consideration of the practice and the necessary items are available. All materials should are readily available and clearly marked. Please return items to the proper place. You may do your part to maintain the studio by cleaning your mat after you use it. From the moment you enter to the moment you leave the Yoga studio treat it as sacred. Keep your vocal volume low, respect the space, materials and those joining you for the practice. Consider how your behavior is affecting everything around you. This practice is the beginning of Yoga.
Why don't you allow drop-in attendees?
Our studio, when full, can accommodate up to 15 practitioners. To protect everyone during the Covid-19 Pandemic the maximum we can welcome is 8. Due to the limited space and the time and energy necessary to prepare to guide a Yoga class we have chosen to require registration to attend. By doing so we are better able to prepare for you and create an experience that honors the time needed to prepare the class, open the space, and guide you in a safe and sanitary space.
I have never tried Yoga what should I know?
Yoga is over 5000 years old. The practice was originally taught in a 1:1 setting, to men only. Over the past 30 years or so it has grown in popularity in the West. As this has happened, the aspects of the practice have been divided. Many teachers have chosen to focus on just one or two minor aspects of the practice. At Lake Tahoe Yoga we are enthusiastic about the practice as a whole. Therefore, we teach not only Asana (poses), but also breathing techniques, focused concentration, life skills, self care and more.
I have been doing yoga at the gym/community center/another studio, but I am looking for a change. What should I look for in a teacher/studio?
All of us have different personalities and desires. A high quality yoga practice should include more than just physical movement. Your teacher should give guidance on variations of the poses, proper breathing and explain the philosophy behind the practice. You should feel welcomed and the studio should be clean. We encourage you to ask questions during class and to provide feedback regarding the teachers. Overall, when you find the right studio and teacher, it should feel like home.
I have been hearing people talk about Vinyasa. What is it?
The word Vinyasa is often translated to mean "flow." Simply put, it is a purposeful sequence of postures intended to create a particular effect. Vinyasa can be fast or slow. The key to a quality Vinyasa is the intention. Every movement should gracefully flow into the next with a specific intended effect. This may be physical, energetic, emotional or mindful. Vinyasa originated as a result of experience in practice. As practitioners became adept in alignment, structure and direction of the poses, they naturally began to flow them together. We recommend choosing a slower moving practice to begin. Choose wisely - not all Vinyasa classes are equal.
What do I Wear?
Wear comfortable clothing in which you feel confident moving. You may practice in running shorts and a polo, or a sleeveless top and a skort. We don't judge. Our goal is for you to feel welcomed, happy and ready to try anything.
I am not flexible, will I be able to do anything during class?
Originally, yoga was practiced in order to develop flexibility. Ancient yogis thought that by moving and stretching their bodies prior to sitting for meditation, they would be able to sit more comfortably for longer. Do what is accessible to you and challenge yourself to attempt that which appears out of reach. Over time, the more you try, the more you will be able to do.
I am not very strong, what should I do if I feel like I cannot do something during class?
Our goal is to help you feel inspired to try every pose that we offer during the class. However, when you first begin, the movements may be new and challenging. Feel free to take a break by sitting down, standing in mountain (pictured below) or resting in child's pose (pictured below).
I am dealing with a variety of physical issues and pain can I still join?
Listening to your body during any physically demanding activity is important. Yoga is a practice that helps us to identify the difference between pain and discomfort. We will encourage you to challenge yourself, but suggest that you choose a more gentle variation in the case that you begin to experience pain. You may choose to begin with Privately Booked Sessions to develop comfort and awareness of variations you may use during group classes.
Is yoga going to help me lose weight, get stronger, become more flexible, relax, destress, reduce anxiety, sleep better, eliminate disease, cure cancer, change the world, etc.?
The practice of yoga, in itself, is not going to do any of these things. Applying the practices of yoga to your life can help you to develop new habits and a healthier lifestyle. As with anything, it is up to you to decide how you want to change your self and the world.
I am pregnant, have high blood pressure, heart issues, etc. Is yoga safe for me?
Pregnancy is neither a reason to begin a practice nor one to stop doing all of the activities you enjoy doing. It is important to listen to your doctor regarding any body issues. There are certain poses recommended for various illnesses and issues and others that are recommended be avoided. In the case of pregnancy, blood and heart issues, it is good practice to avoid going upside-down (headstand/handstand, etc.) and to make sure that you are able to breathe with ease regardless of the position you take. Let your instructor know what, if any, precautions your doctor has given you prior to class. He or she should be able to offer variations on the postures that give you access without causing harm.
