History of The Inn at Cook Street
Michael Cunningham, the author of "The Hours" and other notable works, finished the celebrated novel, "Home at the End of the World", as a winter guest.
Edward Hopper was also a frequent visitor when the Inn was privately owned by a wealthy merchant.
Also, Simie Maryles, renowned artist and owner of the gallery of the same name just around the corner on Commercial Street
was married in the Studio Cottage in 1975 and has since captured the enchantment of the Inn at Cook Street in some of her celebrated paintings.
This lovingly maintained, Greek Revival house was once owned by Sylvanius and Louisa Cook
a prominent mariner's family. The Cook’s were a wealthy merchant family. The Inn at Cook Street was part of five properties owned by the Cook family, who at one time owned adjacent homes on Cook, Commercial, and Bradford Streets.
The Artist’s Studio was originally one of Provincetown’s Black Smith’s Shops. This building is now the”Studio Cottage”, located in our gardens.
It’s possible this house came from North Truro.
The May 13, 1874, Advocate (page 2) states: “Capt. Hughes has moved his house from Truro and will erect it on parallel street near the eastern school house.” In the 1886 resident directory, Capt. Sylvanus N. Hughes is a mariner with a house on Bradford, corner of Cook. He is also on the 1880 atlas as being at that location.
About the Innkeepers
Welcome to “Our Home” in Historical Provincetown, one of the most beautiful small towns in the world. Provincetown has been a part of our lives since we were young teenagers vacationing here with our families and friends. We were taken by the surrounding natural beauty, the intersecting cultures, the history of this famous fishing village, and its diverse community spirit. After over two decades of vacationing here together, and traveling frequently from our Manhattan home to Provincetown, we made the joyous decision to make Provincetown our new home. Now we have the opportunity to share with you all we have experienced and cherished here at our home, at the Inn at Cook Street. We look forward to hosting you in “Our Home” and will make every effort to ensure you fully experience the magic of Provincetown!
John Jay Wooldridge
Growing up in a very large home in Sullivan Square, Somerville with his parents, sister and grandparents, John Jay learned early in life that “Home” is a place of family, friends, neighbors, and an open door. There was never a time in his grandparent’s house that there wasn’t someone visiting. When he and his parents moved to Melrose, the house was always filled with music, singing, and lots of company. John’s family are all musicians, and there were always lessons, rehearsals, or jam sessions in the parlor. John started out as an accomplished athlete, becoming a coach, trainer, spokesperson and fitness expert. He has traveled the world for over twenty years in the Hospitality and Fitness Industry. John has owned, managed and designed for some of the most successful Hospitality, Sports, Fitness, and equipment companies in the world. A Celebrity Trainer, he has worked with talent from the Music, Broadway, and Stage and Screen Industries.

He also has worked in Hospitality & Retail Management in the US, Corsica, France, and Switzerland. Patrick grew up in a very large family in Stoughton, Massachusetts with six brothers and sisters. “Our house was the meeting place for the neighborhood kids on their way to school”. His mother had the house designed with an extra large kitchen to entertain more people at the kitchen table. He owes his success to his wonderful mother! “I watched her raise seven children alone due to my father’s early passing at a very young age. Her extraordinary spirit, joy of life, smile, and sheer determination are inspirational. I look forward to creating such joy with our guests at the Inn at Cook Street!”
Celebrating 176 years, this unique Provincetown bed and breakfast located in the heart of the art gallery district is a lovingly maintained 1836 Greek Revival with two cottages and koi pond set amidst our beautiful gardens where many have spoken their vows and others have found time to simply immerse themselves in its history and romance while visiting America's first art colony.
