Low Back Pain
The sciatic nerve stems from the low back and extends all the way down to the feet. In late pregnancy, sciatica can be caused by due to inflammation in the sciatic nerve. This can result from swelling and water retention in the body and growth of the uterus and baby. These things combined, aid in increased pressure in the low back and pelvic floor. Massage can address the inflamed nerve by releasing tension in the surrounding tissues and muscles.
Round Ligament Pain
Rounds ligament pain is a common occurrence during pregnancy. Round ligament pain is caused by the increased weight of the uterus and its impact on the tendons. Hormonal changes also effect the tendons by softening them throughout pregnancy in preparation of childbirth. Prenatal massage can help manage the pain associated with round ligament pain through helping to release the tension in the ligament and soft tissue surrounding the ligament.
Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel is a common condition in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. It is caused by a build up of fluid in the tissues that causes pressure on the median nerve. This can cause numbness and tingling in your fingers and hand. Some women may experience difficulty gripping objects due to the numbness. Massage is very effective at reducing pressure on the nerve, decreasing swelling, decreasing inflammation, and increasing the circulation.

Edema & Swelling

Due to this exponential amount of additional fluid in the body, swelling in the hands, feet, legs ankles can be very normal. Research and Prenatal Massage Studies Indicate That Massage Therapy Performed During Pregnancy Can Reduce Anxiety
Decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. Massage therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Swedish Massage, which aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to the muscle groups of the body.
Studies Done in the Past 10 Years Have Shown That Hormone Levels Associated with Relaxation and Stress are Significantly Altered
Leading to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health, when massage therapy was introduced to women's prenatal care. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol ("stress hormones") were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression). Women find relief from achy, swollen feet and legs; hand numbness and reduced function.
One Hundred and Twelve Pregnant Women
Who were diagnosed depressed were randomly assigned to a group who received group Interpersonal Psychotherapy or to a group who received both group Interpersonal Psychotherapy and massage therapy. The data suggested that the group who received psychotherapy plus massage attended more sessions on average, and a greater percentage of that group completed the 6-week program. The group who received both therapies also showed a greater decrease in depression, depressed affect and somatic-vegetative symptom scores on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, a greater decrease in anxiety scale scores and a greater decrease in cortisol levels. The group therapy process appeared to be effective for both groups as suggested by the increased expression of both positive and negative affect and relatedness during the group therapy sessions. Twenty-six pregnant women were assigned to a massage therapy or a relaxation therapy group for 5 weeks. Both groups reported feeling less anxious after the first session and less leg pain after the first and last session. Only the massage therapy group, however, reported reduced anxiety, improved mood, better sleep and less back pain by the last day of the study.
Eighty-Four depressed pregnant women were recruited during the second trimester of pregnancy and randomly assigned to a massage therapy group
A progressive muscle relaxation group or a control group that received standard prenatal care alone. These groups were compared to each other and to a non-depressed group at the end of pregnancy. The massage therapy group participants received two 20 min therapy sessions by their significant others each week for 16 weeks of pregnancy, starting during the second trimester. The relaxation group provided themselves with progressive muscle relaxation sessions on the same time schedule. Immediately after the massage therapy sessions on the first and last days of the 16-week period the women reported lower levels of anxiety and depressed mood and less leg and back pain. By the end of the study the massage group had higher dopamine and serotonin levels and lower levels of cortisol and norepinephrine. These changes may have contributed to the reduced fetal activity and the better neonatal outcome for the massage group (i.e. lesser incidence of prematurity and low birthweight), as well as their better performance on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment. The data suggest that depressed pregnant women and their offspring can benefit from massage therapy.
Massage therapy has been demonstrated to be effective during pregnancy.
Women who received massage therapy reported decreased depression, anxiety, and leg and back pain. Cortisol levels decreased and, in turn, excessive fetal activity decreased, and the rate of prematurity was lower in the massage group. In a study of labor pain, women who received massage therapy experienced significantly less pain, and their labors were on average 3 h shorter with less need for medication. An underlying mechanism we have been exploring is that these effects are mediated by increased vagal activity. This likely occurs by the stimulation of pressure receptors that are innervated by vagal afferent fibers, which ultimately project to the limbic system, including hypothalamic structures involved in autonomic nervous system regulation and cortisol secretion.
Edema
Turkish Researchers Randomly Divided 80 Pregnant Women into Two Groups
A study group that received a 20-minute foot massage daily for five days, and a control group that did not receive any intervention beyond standard prenatal care. "Compared with the control group, women in the experimental group had a significantly smaller lower leg circumference (right and left, ankle, instep and metatarsal-phalanges joint) after five days of massage," according to an abstract published on www.pubmed.gov. "The results obtained from our research show that foot massage was found to have a positive effect on decreasing normal physiological lower leg [edema] in late pregnancy."

The study group had a 20 min foot massage daily for 5 days whereas the control group did not receive any intervention beyond standard prenatal care. Compared with the control group, women in the experimental group had a significantly smaller lower leg circumference (right and left, ankle, instep and metatarsal–phalanges joint) after 5 days of massage; the control group tended toward increased circumferences.

This massage is specific to women at 38 to 40 weeks gestation or those who have gone beyond their due date.
Labor preparation is a gentle but effective way to nudge the body to get ready for labor. It will not force the body to go into labor, but instead work with where the body is naturally to help get the body and baby ready and or help facilitate the process. Studies have shown that stimulating the acupressure induction points help raise oxytocin levels (hormones needed for labor) to stimulate the body to shift into labor (however, the body and baby must be ready for induction massage to stimulate labor). If the body or baby is not ready, the induction massage will help the cervix to ripen, efface and dilate, but labor will not begin until baby and the mothers body is truly ready.

Research on Massage and Postpartum
A study currently underway at the Touch Research Institute concerns the effects of touch on pregnant women.
[Massage]… is also said to help with such pregnancy-related conditions as sciatica and constipation. "We're trying to find the best ways to reduce pregnancy anxiety" says study director Tiffany Field, Ph.D., "which we know contributes to premature delivery and prenatal problems." TRI has found… massage releases a substance similar to serotonin, a neurotransmitter related to pain relief.
In a groundbreaking 1986 study, the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami's School of Medicine
Tiffany Field, Ph.D., showed that premature infants who were massaged three times a day for 15 minutes gained 47 percent more weight than other preemies and were released from the hospital six days earlier. It wasn't just that the massaged kids felt more secure for being coddled. In later research, Field showed that massage (as opposed to light touch) stimulates the brain's vagus nerve, causing the secretion of food-absorption hormones, including insulin. Nerve stimulation probably explains other benefits as well.

Chinese Medical Massage/Tui Na
Chinese Medical Massage, or Tui Na (twee-nah) is a therapeutic massage used for a plethora of health conditions. Chinese Medical Massage, Tui Na focuses on the same points and channels as in acupuncture; but with the hands and fingers. Referred to as acupressure in the West, Chinese Medical massage, Tui Na is a method of touch used by the Tui Na therapist to balance the Qi energy, vital areas and the internal organs. Stimulating the flow of blood and lymph, Chinese medical massage, Tui Na releases blockages that would otherwise cause pain, swelling, toxic buildup and other health symptoms. A form of self-healing therapy, Chinese Medical Massage, Tui Na is beneficial to almost anyone. Chinese Medical massage, Tui Na is effective for musculoskeletal pain, headaches, stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, weakened immune systems, digestive problems, female problems, and fibromyalgia patients.
Acupressure
Developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago, acupressure is the most ancient of healing therapies utilizing the finger tips to stimulate prompt healing within the body. Similar to acupuncture, acupressure uses the same energy points on the body. Acupressure is very beneficial as it can relieve pain and bring the body back into balance. Acupressure's healing ability promotes stress reduction, improves circulation, relaxes the body and strengthens the immune system. Acupressure can effectively be used to alleviate acute and chronic conditions such as arthritis, headaches, spinal-muscular pain, and sinus complications. Also a preventative therapy, acupressure is good for fatigue as well. Overall, acupressure is an excellent healing therapy for whole well-being—mind, body and spirit.
Swedish
Swedish Massage is bodywork that is specifically designed to relax muscles. Interestingly, it was originally derived from the oldest known form of massage which is Chinese Tui Na. By applying deep pressure to muscles and bones, by rubbing concurrently with the circulation towards the heart, Swedish massage purposefully enhances oxygen flow in blood and helps to rid toxins from the muscles. Shortening recovery time from injuries like muscle sprains, Swedish Massage helps to flush body tissues of lactic and uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. Aside from increasing circulation to the heart, Swedish massage stretches ligaments and tendon making them more flexible. Swedish massage is also known to stimulate the skin and nervous system to enhance emotional and physical wellbeing.
Myofascial
Myofascial release is a tender mixture of stretches and massage techniques. Derived from the Latin words "myo,"—meaning muscle, and "fascia"—for band; myofascial release therapy releases tension from the fibrous bands of connecting tissue (fascia). Myofascial release therapy aims to free constrictions or blockages in the fascia, thereby alleviating problems with connective tissue scarring or injury. Myofascial release therapy utilizes gentle, kneading manipulation that softly stretches, softens, lengthens and realigns fascia. Stretches are held for a couple of minutes until a softening or release is felt. These stretches are repeated until the tension is felt no more. A myofascial release session may last up to an hour and can be administered one to three times per week depending on a patient's condition. In addition, myofascial release therapy can be used to treat back pain; help persons suffering from frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, menstrual problems, incontinence, tennis or golfer's elbow, shin splints, sprains, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle spasms, whiplash injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome. Furthermore, myofascial release can be administered to children suffering from birth trauma, head injuries, cerebral palsy, and scoliosis as well. Ultimately, myofascial release can restore complete balance back to the body.
Reflexology
Reflexology, an ancient art practiced by early Egyptians. Reflexology is a science founded on the basis that areas of the feet, hands and ears are comprised of zones and reflex areas that correspond to all glands, organs, and bodily systems. Reflexology is a technique whereby pressure is applied to these areas resulting in stress reduction by using thumb, finger and hand methods. Reflexology restores natural balance and revitalization. Not intended to cure diseases, reflexology is valuable in locating high stress or tension areas in the body. Since 75% of all health problems are linked to stress, reflexology could prove invaluable in this day and age, this therapy can be utilized in encouraging natural healing.
Hot Stone
Stone massage is a type of body massage that utilizes a series of smooth dense stones varying in temperature from 32–140°F. Hot stone massage is applied to specific body parts to help stiff and sore muscles through the use of heat. Stone massage can also reduce the possibility of chronic or acute physical problems. Typically, stone massage is performed in the same way as a general massage session, except with the use of temperate stones. Many clients convey feelings of rejuvenation and increased energy levels after receiving a hot stone massage. Typically, stone massage is performed in the same manner of a general massage session, except with the use of temperate stones. Clients who have had a stone massage often convey feelings of rejuvenation and increased energy levels.
Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and should not be confused with wanting a deep pressure massage. Deep tissue massage is especially designed for chronically tense and contracted areas. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, which limits movement, and increases inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement thru slowly increasing pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage. Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:
Chronic pain
Limited mobility
Recovery from injuries (e.g. sports injuries, falls, whiplash)
Repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
Postural problems
Osteoarthritis pain
Muscle tension or spasm

Chair massage focuses on the upper body areas that often cause problems for people who sit at a desk or use a computer keyboard.
Chair massage can help prevent or relieve carpal tunnel syndrome, tension headaches, neck pain, and back problems, helping to prevent repetitive injuries. This massage is performed in your normal work attire and requires no oils. Instead of using a table, the massage takes place in a specially designed portable massage chair. Leaning forward in the chair allows you to relax completely with your head resting in a comfy face cradle lined with a disposable cloth cover. Our therapist will bring everything needed, including music. All you need to provide is some quiet space and eager participants. Chair massage typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, no longer than a coffee break, but is far more effective!

Kathleen and Kerida's treatment approach combines hands on treatment, exercise and education.

Kathleen has been practicing physical therapy for more than 30 years.
After graduating from Boston University, she worked with a wide variety of patients in multiple settings in Northern Illinois. Early on, she discovered an affinity for patients with complex issues, which continued after a move to the Madison area. Kathleen enjoys the challenge of setting patients on the path toward an active and pain-free life. Using an eclectic approach, combining treatment techniques from several manual therapy disciplines with corrective exercise, she loves to solve a good puzzle and delights in the human body's ability to adapt, repair, and perform. Kathleen works with her patients to find the root cause of symptoms, following lines of tension and strain through the body.

TCM is used by 25% of the world's population, and is the primary form of medicine in many Asian countries. TCM does not diagnose diseases. It identifies patterns of imbalance in the body. Treatments are designed to restore balance in the body, which allows the body to heal itself. TCM is a holistic healthcare system that incorporates all aspects of a person's health. The body, mind, and spirit are evaluated together when determining the patterns of imbalance. Any disharmony within the body, mind, or spirit can affect the other.
Chinese Acupressure and Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage)
Chinese Medical Massage (Tui Na) and Acupressure are modalities of manual tissue manipulation to return the body into homeostasis or balance. The practitioner uses massage and acupressure to address the imbalance and appropriately nourish, drain, tonify, or sedate and bring balance to the patient. The Chinese believe that pain is caused by blockage of energy (qi) and/or blood. Because Chinese Massage (Tui Na) incorporates various techniques and pattern recognition, it is able to target therapeutic differences for each individual case. Acupressure is a way to enjoy the benefi ts of acupuncture without needles. Although acupuncture is always encouraged, acupressure is still an effective and non-invasive alternative for ages one to 100.
