Mal Bien, Papalote [46.09%]
An extremely small batch release from the Ramos family. Mal Bien Sierra Negra is made with the rare maguey Sierra Negra (Agave Americana). This tiny batch only yielded 48 liters and from that tiny quantity only 24 bottles made their way to the US. Aromas of sandalwood, cedar, and dried cinnamon sticks. It has luxurious notes of fresh fruit: melon, papaya, and strawberry.

Rey Campero, Mexicano [48.2]
Rey Campero is artisanally produced featuring in ground cooking for up to five days, followed by cooling and resting up to one week. Cooked agaves are crushed by a tahona and open air fermented with natural ambient yeasts for up to 12 days before double distillation in small copper pot stills. Flavors are somewhat smoky with charred oak bark, griddled cactus paddle, and roasted poblano pepper. Some leatheriness in the texture adds another layer to the overall effect, with is earthy and balanced.

Mal Bien Espadin [45.5%]
Mal Bien Espadin is produced by Lucio Morales Lopez in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. This mezcal smells of roasted meat, ground corn, and pine tar. On the palate, there are notes of leather, caramelized banana, and barley. An earlier batch of this was produced by Don Juan Hernández Méndez in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca.

Nuestra Soledad La Compañia is made in a palenque that is rests at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. The agaves are grown on a steep slope, which helps control natural drainage and irrigation. This Mezcal has notes of high-toned fruit and green pepper. It is bright and refined.

Real Minero, Espadin, Largo [45.9%]
Real Minero is considered by many to be one of the world's finest Mezcal producers. Made by mezcal royalty Graciela Angeles, The family has been making mezcal for several generations in Santa Catarina Minas, and they're known both in Mexico and abroad for creating some of the best bottles available. Real Minero Espadin y Largo has notes of fresh green herbs, orange blossoms, and wet clay. The two different agave make this feel balanced and round.

El Jolgorio Barril uses the maguey Barril, which is part of the Karwinskii agaves that grows wild or in a semi-cultivated environment. The Barril piña is dense with sugars and very little water, which results in a Mezcal of great complexity. This Mezcal delicately balances sweetness, citrus, and a distinct minerality. It is earthy with hints of light smoke.

Flor Del Desierto Sotol [48%]
Flor del Desierto Sierra is made by Jose Armando Fernandez, grown and distilled in the Madera region of Chihuahua. The plants are cooked in shallow pits fueled by oak firewood, shredded by axe, knife and finally cow stomping before being open-air fermented in wood tanks and distilled in clay. Such a fresh, green nose against a clay backdrop and very subtle sweetness.

Tosba Cenizo 49.95%
Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. While living in Silicon Valley, California in 1999, they were inspired and influenced by the entrepreneurialism that surrounded them. Concerned by the increasing migration from their home region of Cajonos-Villa Alta in the Sierra Juárez mountains, they decided to form a business that would rescue the disappearing mezcal production and bring economic opportunity to the area.

Real Minero Largo, 2017 [48%]
From the Ángeles Carreño family in Santa Catarina Minas comes the brand Real Minero, helmed by fifth-generation mezcal producers Graciela. 'Largo' is another member of the storied Agave karwinskii species in Santa Catarina Minas, often referred to in other communities as Tobaziche. Real Minero's Largo is a particularly beautiful example. It is redolent of fruit, flowers, fresh melon and green pepper, with a deep fiber backbone that lends a contrasting full body and lean, high-toned nose to play off one another.

Real Minero Largo Barril 2019 [50.78%]
Real Minero Largo, Barril is made with Maguey Largo (agave Karwinskii) and Maguey Barril (agave Marmorata). Producer hand-mashed the agave in a stone pit, fermented them with well water, and double distilled in Filipino style clay pot stills. The batch produced in 2019 produced just 86 bottles.Fresh ripe bananas on the initial nose but more earthy clay notes when I came back to it after some time in the glass. The palate has some crisp green pepper notes

Mezcalosfera, Mango & Chile Habanero [53.1%]
Made by Margarito Cortes, who comes from a family that has been producing traditional mezcal for many generations. He works closely with all of the agave that he uses for his mezcal, and he is known for experimenting with the addition of different ingredients in an extra third distillation, similar to a Pechuga. For this mezcal, he added mango and habanero during the third distillation. The agave were roasted with mezquite and encino wood. It was fermented for seven days, and distilled in a cobre con refrescadera still. There were 238 litres of this made in May 2018

Mal de Amor, Cuishe + Tobala [47%]
Mezcales Cuish is made up of rural producers that are dedicated to the production and commercialization of traditional Oaxacan mezcal from different regions and agave varieties. For many years, Mezcales Cuish has operated a mezcaleria in Oaxaca City a few blocks southwest of Mercado Benito Juarez. A second location was opened in Centro, Oaxaca. In 2019, the brand began exporting to the United States. Mezcal Reviews lists a mix of their exported releases along with Oaxaca releases requested by website members.

Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master mezcalero of his family's brand Real Minero, where he combined a lifetime of working under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo with a collegiate degree in agricultural engineering.
