You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a flavorful surge of fruity aromatics and hoppy, grapefruit notes (Amarillo hops), this complex, straw-colored ale finishes long, dry and spicy.

He sampled their wares, their foods and most importantly their libations. Some were good. Some not so good. Others were downright dangerous. Many years into his travels, his pace slowed on a particularly sweltering day. He sought refuge in a small pub to escape the oppressive heat. Before he could even finish wiping his brow, the bartender handed him a glistening glass of ale. The Traveler took a liking to the invigorating lemon shandy concoction. Quite a refresher! he said gratefully. The Traveler has never stopped exploring - in fact, hes on the road this very day. Somewhere. Only one thing has changed: he now makes sure he orders a shandy everywhere he goes.

Lagunitas PILS (Czech Style Pilsner)
6.20%, Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co, Style: Bohemian Pilsener, Ratings: BA:82 RB:75. In The beginning, there were ales. As far as anyone knows, the first beers made were top-fermented, which is longhand for Ale. Sometime long before the 1860s, beers became popular that were made in Northern Europe with a bottom fermenting yeast strain that liked the colder temperatures. Because they had to spend weeks aging before they tasted their best, they were known as Lager beer. Lager is the German word for storage. Since they had to sit a while, they took up more time and space and as such were harder and more expensive to make. Where ales are meaty, lagers are sinewy. Where ales are street, lagers are haute couture. Where an ale might hit you over the head and take your wallet, lagers donate to charity and adopt stray cats. While an ale might steal your car or try to date your daughter and keep her out all night for who-knows-what purpose, a well bred lager would offer to clean your house while youre on vacation and leave fresh scones and coffee for you when you return. Now, dont get us wrong, ales can be a lot of fun to hang out with when youre in the right mood, and if you have bail money on you. But whats wrong with livin uptown from time to time, on a nice street, where the doormen all wear those little uniforms, the air smells of flowers, and lagers rule the Earth. Cheers! Note: Formerly at 5.3%.

MadTree PsycHOPathy
6.9%, Brewery: MadTree Brewing, Style: American IPA, Ratings: BA:88 RB:85. The subtle malt backbone combats the bitterness and intensity of floral, grassy, and citrus hop flavors. However, taste is perception. Whats your slant?
7.5%, Brewery: Mission Brewery, Style: Spice/Herb/Vegetable, Ratings: BA:87 RB:75. Our Hard Root Beer is a hand-crafted adult twist on a classic soda. New Belgium Fat Tire
5.20%, Brewery: New Belgium Brewing, Style: American Amber/Red Ale, Ratings: BA:82 RB:50. Named in honor of our founder Jeffs bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineers home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tires appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Weyerbacher Winter Ale
5.60%, Brewery: Weyerbacher, Style: Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer, Ratings: BA:79 RB:66. At Weyerbacher we have created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It is smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV).Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration.Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold.
