The Chen family opened Yantze in 1991. Our tradition of gourmet Chinese cooking goes back many centuries to the priests who prepared feasts for the venerated Emperor, making pilgrimage with his court to celebrate Buddha's birthday at the shrine at his birthplace. Their reverence for Buddha and the Emperor inspired their efforts ... they elevated their culinary skill to high art.
Chef Chen apprenticed with Shanghai's great chefs. When the revolution occurred, he opened his own restaurant in Taiwan, and quickly achieved fame. Chiang Kai-shek was a patron. Chef Chen's skill with catering and banquets led to a cultural exchange in Philadelphia, where he remained with his family and saw four of his five children grow up and complete college.
