The world of cosmetic, plastic
and reconstructive surgery continues to evolve and become more popular. Increased public attention, interest, and accessibility increases medical attention and research resulting in improved surgical methods and techniques.
Perhaps cosmetic surgery gained acceptance first in Hollywood
and from the attention it received there. Like style and fashion, people not only wanted it, but had to know more about it. Curiosity led to awareness that gave way to information, development, acceptance, and accessibility.
Women and men from all walks of life and a wide range of ages
and income levels have more knowledge and interest in these services, treatments, and procedures than ever before.
Why all the interest?
The conclusion is simple. Appearance is important to self image and identity. We are conscious about our appearance. Ultimately, it affects how we feel about ourselves and how we present ourselves to the rest of the world.
Cosmetic procedures and treatments can alleviate concerns
that have existed for a long time. These can also be a solution to problems that people had not even considered addressing, as a way to make a slight improvement or correct an imperfection.
The reasons people seek a cosmetic surgery procedure
or a cosmetic treatment can vary as much as the individuals involved.
The outcome of cosmetic surgery procedures
cosmetic treatments, and aesthetic treatments can be spectacular. Often, increased self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-comfort accompany the result in a relatively short amount of time. The biggest difference people detect is usually in the way a person acts and presents herself or himself. After all, how the patient feels afterward is the reason she or he has the procedure to begin with. The only way to find out if any procedure or treatment is right for you, and what result you can expect, is through a consultation with a qualified surgeon. Dr. Sumpter offers free, no-obligation consultations for all cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments she performs.
Our Procedures
Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction
A woman may become interested in cosmetic breast surgery for a variety of reasons. Some women do not develop breast size or shape naturally, leaving them with a disproportional figure. Childbirth, the normal aging process, fluctuations in weight, or genetics may also cause the breasts to lose volume and/or shape. Although the most common breast enhancement surgery is breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction procedures are performed for similar reasons and can have the same, and in some cases, a stronger effect on a patient. All can be performed to produce a natural-looking result.
Face Lift, Brow Lift, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty
Cosmetic procedures on the face include a full face lift, brow lift, mid-face lift, blepharoplasty and rhinoplasty. Any of these procedures can remove as much as 10 years from a patient's face.
Aesthetic Skin Care Treatments
IPL / Laser Procedures. Aesthetic treatments are a wonderful way to treat yourself. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels take care of your skin, removing sun damage and the effects of aging. IPL (intense pulsed light) lasers can be used to perform laser hair removal, correct sun damage and areas of discoloration, and to treat spider veins.
Liposuction, Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck
Liposuction and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), though performed for different reasons, are both procedures that can help contour and restore the torso area. Liposuction can also be performed on other areas including the back, hips, inner knees, neck, thighs, upper arms, and in some cases breasts.
Lumpectomy, Mastectomy
Although we are fortunate to have a full range of cosmetic procedures to enhance, reduce, or reshape the breasts, no discussion about breasts can be complete without mentioning breast cancer. Now occurring in 1 of 8 women, it is a topic that is always in the back of our minds. In addition to cosmetic surgery, Dr. Sumpter performs both lumpectomy and mastectomy procedures, which are performed to treat breast disease including cancer. Immediate reconstruction technique can often leave the newly operated-on breast looking better than ever. Not only is it common for a woman to elect to have immediate reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, she often can elect to have the other non-affected breast lifted, enhanced, or reshaped to create better symmetry.
Botox
Cosmetic Fillers. Restylane, Botox, and skin photo rejuvenation are among quick treatments that cause no downtime and minimal discomfort. These are among the increasingly popular treatments that allow a person to resume her or his daily routine can make a dramatic difference in appearance.
Breast Augmentation
Documented as early as the 1890s, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. Implants in a breast augmentation procedure were first reported in 1962.
Breast augmentation utilizes implants to enlarge
and/or improve the contour of the breasts. An important choice in relation to implants is in deciding between saline-filled implants or silicone gel-filled implants. The implants are filled with saline once they are placed in the body. Implants come in a variety of sizes, and can be tailored, in shape and texture, to each individual based on the look each would like to achieve and the anatomical fit to her body.
For women who have lost volume
or size in their breasts from breast feeding, weight loss or gain, or aging, breast augmentation can restore a look they once had. Breast augmentation can dramatically improve body contour. Some do not naturally develop breast tissue proportional to the rest of their body due to genetics. Breast augmentation gives these patients a sense of proportion and/or femininity they never had. Regardless of the reason, for many women a breast augmentation can help build their self confidence and improve their self image. The results can be phenomenal. Self renewal and improved confidence may be the most significant result.
Implants can be placed submuscular
underneath the pectoralis major muscle, or subglandular, underneath the breast glands, but above the pectoralis major muscle. Dr. Sumpter prefers to insert the implants submuscular in most cases. In her experience, she has found this to produce a more natural appearance and decrease interior scar formation.
The procedure can usually be performed in less than two hours
Many patients are able to return to work in as little as three days. Discomfort is minimal and often requires no additional medication post-operatively. Patients can expect slight bruising and swelling for one to two weeks following surgery.
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment
you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best course of action for you.
At Winds of Change
you will receive the special, individualized care that you deserve. Dr. Sumpter strives to exceed expectations beyond patient satisfaction. Please let us know how we may help you achieve your goals.
Reasons patients choose breast augmentation include
Asymmetry (unequal) breast size
Effects of aging
Loss of volume after pregnancy and/or breast feeding
Loss of volume after weight loss
Reconstruction after breast cancer
Underdeveloped breasts
Four Techniques for Insertion of Breast Implants
There are four accepted techniques for the insertion of breast implants:
inframmamary
through the breast crease underneath the breast; periareolar, or inserted underneath the nipple where the scar is hidden in the darkened portion of the nipple perimeter.
axillary
or through the armpit; and transumbilical, or inserted endoscopically through the navel. Well versed in all four techniques, Dr. Sumpter usually performs the procedure either periareolar or transumbilical in most cases.
The transumbilical method
is the most recently developed form of breast augmentation.
If method of insertion
is important to you, it may affect your choice between saline and silicone gel implants.
These techniques are discussed
with the patient at a consultation. In all four methods, the scars are usually small and designed to be carefully hidden due to their placement.

Breast Lift
At Winds of Change, you will receive the special, individualized care that you deserve. Dr. Sumpter strives to exceed expectations beyond patient satisfaction. Please let us know how we may help you achieve your goals.
Breast Lift/Mastopexy
For many women, pregnancy, breast feeding, weight fluctuation, or the aging process has changed the appearance of their breasts. Often as women age, breast volume decreases and the skin loses its capability to retract with the lost volume of breast tissue. The breast may lose firmness and shape and begin to sag or droop. Mastopexy describes a group of surgical techniques used to reposition or lift the breast tissue. Breast lift procedures redefine the breast shape return the breasts to a more youthful appearance by raising and reshaping the breasts.
Breast Lift Procedure
A breast lift procedure removes excess skin surrounding the areola and from the bottom of the breasts. This tightens the skin of the breasts. The nipple and areola are then moved to a natural position on the reshaped breast. The areola can also be reduced during a mastopexy if the patient so desires. Breast lift procedures are performed utilizing a variety of surgical techniques. The technique chosen by Dr. Sumpter for each individual patient's surgery is based upon that individual's anatomy. (One of the deciding factors in which technique is utilized is the amount of lift desired and recommended based on the sought after result. The surgery is designed to carefully hide any scarring or evidence of the procedure.) During the procedure, the nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the breast and excess skin beneath the breast may be removed. In the periareolar technique, the least invasive, this is all that is done. In these circumstances, the patient is happy with the general shape of the breasts, but the effects of time have caused limited sagging and/or loss of some volume that give the appearance of the nipples and areolas being out of ideal location on the breasts. This requires the least amount of lift to produce the desired result.
Procedure Time
A breast lift procedure may take between two to five hours and can be performed with or without a simultaneous augmentation (implant) and with or without a breast reduction.
Expectations
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide what is the best course of action for you.
More Involved Technique
A more involved technique is the periareolar approach with a vertical incision. This technique can be performed with or without a breast reduction. The additional vertical incision is made so that some of the glandular tissue in the breasts can be surgically repositioned. For women who have experienced a greater degree of sagging a third technique sometimes referred to as a traditional inverted T may be recommended. In this method, an incision is made on the lower part of the breast from the areola to the breast crease, where an additional incision is made, creating a shape similar to an inverted T. In cases where the breasts are small or have lost volume, implants may be used with the breast lift procedure in order to increase the breast size, shape and firmness.
Recovery Time
Patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort and approximately one to two weeks of recovery time. Mastopexy patients may have some minor scars from the procedure that take up to one year to heal completely, but in almost all cases they are extremely happy with their results. The scars are permanent, but can be strategically placed by the surgeon to make them as inconspicuous as possible.

Breast Reduction
Breast Reduction
While many women are investigating ways to increase
or enhance their breast size, there is a significant population of women who seek breast reduction. Heavy or disproportionately large breasts can be painful and cause other physical problems.
In addition to the physical problems
the emotional aspects of macromastia (increased breast volume) can be devastating. Women are often embarrassed by their breast size, which contributes to an overall feeling of being unattractive. Large breast volume can attract discomfort and unwanted attention - especially in younger age groups.
Women with increased breast size are often self conscious
nd avoid certain situations where the enlarged breasts are more uncomfortable and are brought to the attention of others. This may include avoiding social gatherings such as swimming or exercise.
Lastly, women with disproportionate breasts
become frustrated with finding clothes that fit their body properly.
Breast reduction surgery can be one of the most rewarding procedures for both the patient and the surgeon.
In many cases, these women wait years to correct this issue. There are literally dozens of operations and variations of surgical techniques to choose from, each being tailored for the individual patient and her specific problem. In a breast reduction procedure, excess breast tissue is removed and the breasts are reshaped.
In some cases, liposuction may be used in breast reduction.
During a breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, excess fat, tissue, and skin is removed from the breasts.
The nipple and areola are moved higher on the breast during the procedure. The result is smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. Be it a breast reduction or a breast reduction coupled with a lift procedure, the results are often amazing.
A breast lift procedure may take between two to five hours
and can be performed with or without a simultaneous augmentation (implant) and with or without a breast reduction.
Patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort
and approximately one to two weeks of recovery time.
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment
you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide what is the best course of action for you.
Unwanted larger breast volume can be a burden
nd can result in physical symptoms such as:
Back pain
Breast pain or mastodynia
Breathing problems
Grooves in the shoulders from bra straps
Neck pain
Skin irritation
Lumpectomy
In most cases, health insurance covers issues related to breast disease. At Winds of Change, you will receive the special, individualized care you deserve. Dr. Sumpter strives to exceed expectations beyond patient satisfaction. Please let us know how we may help you.
Lumpectomy
No one ever expects to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite the public's familiarity with the disease, the impact it has on individuals once diagnosed is all encompassing. Now occurring in one of eight women, it is the second most common disease in the female population. It is not exclusive to women, however, and can occur in men as well, although very rarely. A lumpectomy is a procedure that can be an option for those faced with breast cancer. In some instances, it may be the only surgery required. In a lumpectomy, the affected portion of the breast is removed. Depending upon the individual case, this could only be an incision of one inch in length.
When Lumpectomy Prodcures Are Necessary
Lumpectomy may be the recommended diagnosis for women who have only one site of cancer in their breast, or if the tumor is less than four centimeters. The actual surgery time is less than one hour. The incision is placed locally to the area while being placed so that the shape of the breast will camouflage it.

Lumpectomy Procedures
Lumpectomy procedures may also be referred to as breast conserving, breast preservation, or partial mastectomy procedures. The amount of breast tissue removed in a lumpectomy can differ greatly from patient to patient. In a lumpectomy, the surgeon removes only the affected area of the breast and some of the normal surrounding tissue. The removed tissue is examined for cancer cells. Careful examination determines if the margins, or areas of normal surrounding tissue, are clear of any cancer cells. This determines if all of the affected area was removed. If cancer cells are found in the surrounding tissue and clear margins are not established, an additional procedure or re-excision may be necessary in order to ensure removal of all of the cancerous cells. Most women receive five to seven weeks of radiation therapy after a lumpectomy procedure.

A Lumpectomy May Be Performed for Many Reasons, Such as:
A benign breast mass that is solid in nature
A benign breast mass that is liquid (often called a cyst), but that cannot be aspirated with a needle, or
A benign cyst that keeps recurring despite needle aspiration
Certain forms of breast cancer
Mastectomy
Mastectomy, or surgical removal of the breast, is performed to treat serious breast issues, such as breast cancer. Each year more than 185,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Ninety percent of breast cancer occurrences are detected by the individual herself through breast self-examinations.
According to the National Cancer Institute, the Following Signs and Symptoms Often Accompany Breast Cancer:
a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
a change in the size or shape of the breast
nipple discharge or tenderness
inverted nipple
Below Are a Few Different Mastectomy Methods:
Reconstruction with an implant or augmentation can provide a great benefit to these patients and shorten or eliminate the feelings of loss that some women experience.
Simple or Total Mastectomy
This includes removal of the breast tissue, skin, and nipple, but rarely includes the removal of lymph nodes. The chest wall is usually left fairly flat following a simple mastectomy. A woman may opt for breast reconstruction or choose to wear a breast prosthesis following this procedure.
Modified Radical Mastectomy
This is the most common type of mastectomy procedure performed. This procedure includes removal of the entire breast, nipple, areola, and varying amounts of lymph nodes in the under arm region. If no reconstruction is performed, the healed chest wall is typically flat or slightly rippled. This technique can work very well with immediate reconstruction.
Radical Mastectomy
This was a popular procedure used to treat breast cancer in the 1960s and 1970s. It is no longer performed today. In this mastectomy procedure, the breast tissue, skin, nipple, areola, underlying chest muscles, and varying numbers of lymph nodes in the underarm region are removed. Physical therapy is sometimes required to restore shoulder mobility.
Partial Mastectomy or Lumpectomy
This is also known as breast conserving surgery. This involves removing a portion of the breast along with the tumor and varying numbers of lymph nodes. Lumpectomy is discussed in further detail on its own page within this web site. All forms of mastectomy procedures require general anesthesia and a hospital stay. Patients can expect general soreness following a mastectomy procedure for a minimum of three to four days.
Combination Breast Surgery
Combination Breast Surgery
Combination breast surgery is a description we use for multiple procedures to the breast for any number of reasons that in some cases is recommended to get a patient's desired result. In this way, it is a general term similar to "mommy makeover," but obviously is just about the breasts.
Mastopexy (breast lift) combined with the use of implants may be the most common breast combination surgery
Often this is recommended for patients that come in seeking a breast augmentation because of lost breast volume. Based on measurements taken during an examination and consultation, a lift may be recommended if these measurements indicate sagging skin in addition the loss of volume. The use of implants with a lift helps produce the patient's desired fullness and contour while the lift procedure removes some excess skin and positions the breasts more naturally, eliminating the sagging. The combination of a lift with augmentation, or the use of breast implants, does require a different surgical approach and a different scar, but for the patients whom Dr. Sumpter recommends this, it does give their desired result and goal.
Breast implant removal & replacement may be performed for many reasons
depending upon the individual patient. First the common myth of a breast augmentation requiring repetitive surgery should be addressed. Through various sources many have heard that once a woman decides to have a breast augmentation procedure, it must be repeated every 10 years. This likely comes from the fact that implant manufacturers offer at least a partial warranty for a period of up to 10 years. There is no definitive requirement for a breast augmentation patient to have a procedure redone.
A breast implant removal & replacement procedure often happens
when a patient decides to change the size of her implants whether increase or decrease the size of her implants. As the size of implants are a patient's personal preference and a very personal decision, the decision to change the size is also. Dr. Sumpter can provide a recommendation based on the patient's goal.
Some implant removal & replacement procedures are performed
as the patient is choosing a type of implant that may not have been available when the original procedure was performed. This can include changing from saline-filled implants to silicone-gel filled implants or may be changing to a different profile or shape of implant.
Breast implant removal & replacement procedures are also performed in circumstances where an implant has deflated.
During a breast implant removal & replacement, a patient may need a capsulectomy
This is a cleaning of the created capsule for the existing implants and usually includes the removal of existing internal scar tissue, limiting future scar tissue and discomfort. A capsulectomy may also be necessary in instance where implants are being removed, but not replaced. These cases can result in sagging unless a small lift is performed also.
Though not as common
in some cases a breast reduction patient may benefit from the addition of a small implant to help produce superior breast fullness, if the patient so desires. This would be discussed with Dr. Sumpter if she thought it would offer a patient an advantage or better result.
Reconstruction cases are performed where the patient has had trauma to the area, such as breast cancer.
In some breast cancer patients, reconstruction can be soon if not immediate following a mastectomy. Others will have delayed reconstruction after full treatment is completed.
Body/Torso Procedure
Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedures are more popular today than ever before
With the emphasis on health and fitness and the simplified view of how appearance demonstrates whether or not we are in good health, a common belief is a firm abdomen is a fit abdomen and, by extension, a fit individual.
Abdominoplasty is a procedure that reshapes the abdominal wall
The procedure is designed to remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen. It tightens the abdominal muscles and can dramatically reduce the appearance of an extended abdomen.
About the Procedure
During an abdominoplasty, the vertical muscles of the abdomen are pulled together
and sutured in place, creating a firmer abdominal wall and narrowing the waistline.
Patients with a smaller amount of excess fat
and loose skin may be candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty. The added benefit of this procedure is that the incision can be smaller, and the healing time is slightly shorter. On occasion, abdominal liposuction is performed simultaneously.
Although effectively performed on men
most abdominoplasty patients are women due to normal genetic fat distribution, muscle diastasis, and skin consistency. Men have a different skin integrity and, of course, are not exposed to anatomical changes brought on by pregnancy.
The surgery time may range between two and a half and five hours.
Recovery may take from three to four weeks. Unless one's job is sedentary, that amount of time off work may be needed.
Candidates For This Surgery
Patients who are candidates for an abdominoplasty have excess skin, possibly because of post pregnancy or large weight fluctuations.
They may have had previous abdominal surgery resulting in large incisions that alter the appearance of the abdominal wall, or they may be genetically predisposed to disproportionate weight gain in the lower abdominal area.
As we age, the skin loses some of its elasticity
and fails to retract as it does when we are younger. Abdominoplasty is ideal for the patient whose body has not returned to form after experiencing any one or a combination of the causes above.
Abdominoplasty is a very effective means of removing excess skin
and tissue for patients who have had gastric bypass surgery.
A patient might opt for abdominoplasty to:
Correct loose upper and lower abdominal skin
Correct separated abdominal muscles (diastasis)
Correct damaged lower abdominal skin, i.e. stretch marks
Remove excess skin and fat from the lower portion of the abdomen
Remove bulging caused by abdominal muscle inactivity
Procedure Recommendations
Procedure Recommendations
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you, including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best course of action for you.
Liposuction
Liposuction
iposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure.
It has wide appeal. It is performed on women and men of several age groups and varied socio-economic levels. Liposuction removes fatty tissue with less surgery time and smaller scars, and generally costs less than more invasive surgical procedures. Many people could benefit from a liposuction procedure.
It is a solution for patients who have stubborn concentration(s) of fatty tissue they are unable to lose despite dieting and exercise.
The goal of a trained surgeon performing liposuction, in addition to the removal of fat, is to establish a more uniform contour.
The addition of tumescence, a process in which the fat is injected
with a solution containing local anesthesia and electrolytes, helps minimize bleeding and discomfort, thus making liposuction safer.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for liposuction is close to her or his ideal body weight
and has one or two areas of focused fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss program and does not take the place of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Several areas may be treated during one procedure provided Dr. Sumpter feels it is a safe option for you.
Some people with a double chin or sagging skin in the jaw line may opt for facial liposuction.
These deposits of fatty tissue are notorious for being resistant to exercise and weight loss. Not considered true facial plastic surgery in medical terms, this option may postpone the need for a face lift for many years.
Procedure Information
A liposuction procedure may take from two to four hours depending upon the areas being treated.
The recovery process may include one to two weeks of swelling and bruising. A patient may return to work within one week.
Facial Procedures
Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery
The eye area is one of the most important facial features. We communicate through our eyes. During conversation, we look into the eyes of the person we are talking with. Eyes tend to reveal much about how someone feels. When your eyes are bright and alert, you appear more energized, well rested and in control. However, sometimes the appearance of the eyes can create a tired, sad, or older look. This may be interpreted by others as fatigue, anger, or unhappiness. Eyelid surgery can be beneficial in many ways. Blepharoplasty procedures are a great way to surgically correct some of the flaws and signs of premature aging.
Upper Eyelids
For upper eyelids, cosmetic surgery can remove excess skin that is obscuring the natural shape of the eyes. It can also help relieve puffiness or swelling that tends to create a tired look. In some cases, excess fat and muscle may also be removed during the procedure.
Ideal Candidates
Most patients seeking blepharoplasty are 35 or older, but some experience these conditions at a much younger age due to genetics. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best course of action for you.
Lower Eyelids
In the lower eyelids, it can remove excess skin and help eliminate fine lines or wrinkles. The surgery can also remove puffiness and can help improve areas of dark circles underneath the eyes. In some cases, similar to the surgical treatment of upper eyelids, excess fat and muscle may also be removed.
Outpatient Surgery
Eyelid surgery is typically an outpatient procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. It usually requires one to two hours of surgery time and approximately one week for recovery. The incision line follows the natural contour of the eyes and is not noticeable once healed. Fine sutures are used to close the area. The result of a blepharoplasty is one of the more dramatic differences among facial cosmetic surgery procedures.
Recovery
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you, including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best course of action for you.
Rhinoplasty/Nose Surgery
Every year, half a million people who are interested in improving the appearance of their noses seek consultation
ith cosmetic and plastic surgeons. The nose is one of the most distinguishing aspects of a person's face. An alteration, or rhinoplasty, can make a dramatic difference in a person's appearance.
Some people are unhappy with the nose they were born with
others are unhappy with the look of their nose as their face has aged; and some seek cosmetic rhinoplasty because of an injury that altered their nose.
A rhinoplasty can change undesirable characteristics of a patient's nose
but it should be noted the result is meant to be an improvement not perfection. It is improved to fit the individual patient's face. The patient should be of an age where their nose and face are fully developed, roughly estimated at age fifteen or sixteen. In a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will give you a medical assessment of your nose including the internal and external aspects of its facial structure and discuss your options.
There Are a Few Different Reasons People Choose to Have Rhinoplasty, Or Reshaping of the Nose:
It can change the angle between your nose and upper lip.
It can change the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose.
It can reduce or increase the size of the nose.
It may also correct a birth defect, breathing problems, or injury.
Surgical Techniques
There are different surgical techniques for rhinoplasty procedures
There is a closed technique in which the incisions are made inside the rim of the nostrils and an open technique in which the incision is made across the base of the nostrils. In both techniques, the soft tissue of the nose is delicately separated from the structures of the nose, giving the surgeon access to the cartilage and bone.
he cartilage and bone are then altered into the desired shape.
Depending upon the desired result and the surgical plan, some of the bone and cartilage may be removed.
Why Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty can improve one's looks, self-confidence, and health.
The procedure usually lasts one to two hours, but more involved rhinoplasty procedures may take longer. Most rhinoplasty patients are able to get back to their routine within two days and able to return to work approximately a week or so following surgery.
Patients will experience some bruising and swelling for a limited time
which may be variable depending upon the individual and may last approximately two weeks. Most of the change will be apparent within three weeks, but there may still be some change for up to a year post surgery. Dr. Sumpter can give guidelines that are more specific on a case-by-case basis.
The patient should thoroughly discuss what she or he hopes to change about their nose
and their desired result with the surgeon. As in any cosmetic surgery procedure, clear communication between the surgeon and the patient throughout the relationship is very important, especially when discussing the result, potential risks, and realistic expectations.
Brow Lift
Brow Lift
Never underestimate the power of your facial expressions.
A furrowed brow can make a person appear upset or concerned when she or he is not. Frown lines between the eyebrows can make a person appear angry. A drooping brow may give the appearance of fatigue or sadness. It also gives us an older appearance.
While Botox and related treatments may provide a temporary solution to a wrinkled brow, it may not be as effective for severe wrinkles
and must be repeated every three to four months. However, it is important to consider alternative treatments as you investigate cosmetic surgery. Results from a brow lift may last up to 10 years.
Brow Lift Benefits
A brow lift alleviates the condition of drooping eyebrows and wrinkled foreheads.
A brow lift tightens the forehead skin and modifies the area as the surgeon removes or alters the skin and muscles that cause these problem areas.
The results of a brow lift are a smoother forehead, raised upper eyelids
and minimized frown lines. As in a full face lift, the scars are hidden in the patient's hairline, but because it can be performed endoscopically, once healed the incisions are more difficult to see with the human eye, making it ideal for patients who may experience hair loss. The placement of incisions with the passage of time will make any scars barely noticeable.
Brow Lift Prodecure
This procedure slightly elevates the low position of the eyebrows, softens horizontal creases across the forehead
and helps to erase worried or angry expressions. The outcome is a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. A brow lift can take years from a patient's face.
The brow lift is now performed endoscopically through very small incisions hidden in the hairline.
Using this technique, Dr. Sumpter can also reduce the size of muscles responsible for frowning by removing a portion of them, producing a smoother brow. Incisions can also be placed slightly behind the hairline.
A brow lift is usually performed with local anesthesia and some intravenous sedation.
It requires one to two hours of surgery time and approximately one week of recovery. The results can last up to 10 years.
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment
you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so you may decide on the best course of action for you.
Face Lift
Face Lift
We all want to look our best, and the appearance of one's face is often the focal point.
No matter how well we all strive to take care of ourselves, the aging process continues silently in the background. If you have noticed subtle changes in your face such as drooping skin, increased wrinkles, change of contour, or an overall "tired appearance," a face lift may be the answer for you.
Skin begins to wrinkle and lose elasticity as part of the normal aging process.
These wrinkles may also be caused by hereditary or environmental factors. Because of numerous factors, people age differently. Wrinkles may affect some people in their 30s, and others not until much later in life. Face lift procedures tighten the skin around the face and neck, removing skin laxity and restoring a more youthful appearance. During a face lift procedure, extra skin that can be safely extracted is removed with the careful consideration of the patient's facial structure.
Benefits of a Face Lift
A face and neck lift, also known as rhytidectomy
is an effective means of reducing cheek lines, extra skin along the lower jaw line, and excess skin under the chin. Prior to a rhytidectomy, liposuction may be performed on fatty areas of the face and neck. Incisions are made in order to gently pull the skin upward.
The underlying muscles and connective tissue are repositioned
and tightened. Some fat may be surgically removed during the process. Face lift procedures can dramatically improve wrinkled skin, but individual patient characteristics may play a role in the result.
At Winds of Change, Dr. Sumpter strives to provide you
with your own best appearance. She believes the result of facial surgery should be appear natural without having the look of just having had a face lift procedure. The result of a face lift can be expected to last up to 10 years.
Surgery Availability
Surgery Availability
Surgery times are variable and can range from three to five hours. The patient usually can expect mild swelling and bruising for two to three weeks following surgery. Incisions from the surgery are carefully camouflaged by their placement against the ears and in the hairline.
About the Procedure
Blepharoplasty (eyelid cosmetic surgery)
Botox, brow lift procedures, chemical peels, facial and/or neck liposuction, skin photo rejuvenation, Restylane, and other cosmetic fillers, are all effectively combined with a face lift procedure to produce a more desirable result depending upon the individual patient. They also may all be options, in a variety of combinations, that will postpone a face lift procedure for quite some time.
We all strive to restore some of the youthfulness
and vitality that may have been lost over the years. Often we can couple surgical techniques with non-surgical, noninvasive modalities to provide the desired result. Dr. Sumpter will be happy to evaluate you and discuss your facial needs. Several surgical techniques are available and can be customized to each patient once that individual is evaluated.
For Men
Cosmetic Surgery for Men
There are several cosmetic procedures that appeal to men.
These include liposuction, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), brow lifts, face lifts, rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty.
One common cause of men seeking cosmetic surgery is gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia is excess tissue in a man's breasts. It can occur just on one side or bilaterally. Often male breast tissue develops in puberty and persists into adulthood. Other than a potentially undesirable appearance, one who has gynecomastia may also experience breast tenderness or soreness or acute nipple symptoms. If gynecomastia has existed for more than 18 months, it is unlikely to recede without treatment.
Gynecomastia may be experienced by 30% of men to different extents as approaching middle age.
Prominent male breast can also be a result of excess fat in the chest area sometimes termed pseudo gynecomastia.
The enlargement may simply be composed of fat. At times the patient may have both prominent breast tissue and fat in the chest area. Gynecomastia can be surgically treated using various methods.
The two most common methods include either liposuction or excision of the breast tissue.
In liposuction the fat is surgically removed using small cannulas. Liposuction does not remove the glandular portion, but may minimally reduce it. Excision of breast tissue involves an incision approximately 1 to 2 inches in length along the border of the areolar complex. By making an actual incision, a calculated, desired amount of the glandular tissue can be removed.
Sometimes the two procedures are combined in which liposuction is performed to remove any fatty component
and an excision to remove glandular tissue.
Surgical correction for gynecomastia gives the patient a flatter chest. It can be life-changing for many patients.
The most common cause of gynecomastia is hormonal, but it can also be linked to:
Steroid use
Excessive marijuana use
Side effects fro medication
Cirrhosis of the liver
Kidney failure
Hyperthyroidism
Disorders of the testes
Ultherapy
Our regular Ultherapy treatment prices are 10% less than Ulthera's suggested patient price.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses ultrasound to lift loose or sagging skin on the neck, under the chin, and above the eyebrow without any downtime. It is the only non-invasive treatment that specifically targets the deep foundation below the skin without disrupting the skin surface. It uses ultrasound imaging, which offers the ability to see the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment. This ensures the energy is used precisely where it is most effective.

Other Features
Ultherapy FDA Approved
The Ulthera is FDA approved to lift skin on the brow, neck, and under the chin. These are trouble areas for many of us. The Ulthera uses focused energy to stimulate the body's creation of collagen by initiating a repair process that produces new collagen, acting as a natural filler. It was cleared by the FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies. More than 200,000 treatments have been performed worldwide. Ultrasound has been used in medicine for more than 50 years.
Ideal Candidates
Good candidates for Ultherapy have skin that has relaxed to the point of looking less firm. Sagging skin on the eyebrows, on the neck, or under the chin are often the first signs of maturing skin. Typically, those in their 30s and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are candidates. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with a medical professional who works directly with the doctor, if the treatment is not performed by the doctor. During a consultation, every detail will be discussed with you including downtime and recovery, as well as the mention of optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best course of action for you.
Benefits of Ultherapy
While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, such as a face lift, it is a nice, viable option for someone either wanting to delay or preferring not to have a face lift, or even someone wanting to prolong some effects of cosmetic surgery.
Procedure
A treatment takes 60 to 90 minutes and does not involve downtime. There may be some initial effect, but lifting and toning may take 2 to 3 months and further improvements can appear up to 6 months following a treatment. Most patients need only one treatment. Some will have a benefit from additional treatments depending on how much laxity exists and how an individual's biology responds to the treatment.
Ultherapy Mini-treatments
Ultherapy Mini-treatments
If you're interested in Ultherapy, but unsure, we have a program perfect for you. For $500, you can have a Mini-Treatment. This will give you the opportunity to have a small area treated at a lower cost and see what it does for you! Possible areas include under chin, under chin with partial neck, wide jowls, narrow jowls or upper brow & eye perimeter. Brief phone consultation and $50 deposit required.

Photorejuvenation
IPL Photorejuvenation
It's never too late to improve your appearance, at any age.
IPL (intense pulsed light) laser/light treatments are an attractive option for people with signs of aging or sun damage. IPL treatments are a way to make improvements or enhancements without surgery. IPL lasers can be used to treat nearly all skin tones and types, making these treatments available to everyone.
IPL laser therapy is noninvasive and downtime is virtually nonexistent.
By utilizing light waves at various energy levels, laser therapy reverses signs of aging. Years can be erased from your face and body. IPL treatments are effective for any area of the body. The settings are adjusted for each patient based on their skin tone and type. Generally, a series of six to eight treatments produce the best results. The number of recommended treatments can only be derived at a consultation and evaluation with consideration given to skin condition and/or damage and skin tone.
Developed to Rejuvenate the Skin Simply

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion
Does anything feel better to the touch than baby soft skin? Sun damage, time
and other elements cause changes to the texture of our skin, leaving skin rough and dry. You can reverse that with microdermabrasion.
With state-of-the-art crystal-free technology, this is a safe
and gentle resurfacing therapy that removes dead skin cells and stimulates the body's natural production of new cells and skin firming collagen, and improves circulation to the dermis. This rapid fine exfoliant is designed to reduce fine lines and unclog and refine pores, and can lighten hyper-pigmentation and scars. A series of six to eight treatments is recommended for best results. We have several patients who have these treatments on a monthly basis.
The result is skin that is softer, smoother, and more uniform in appearance
feeling and looking fresh. Microdermabrasion can help minimize wrinkles, scars, sun damage, and active acne. That youthful glow can be recaptured from dull, lifeless skin with microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion can be utilized on the face, hands, chest, shoulders, or back. A treatment takes a half hour with virtually no down time.
Microdermabrasion Can Effectively Treat:
dull, dry, rough skin
acne prone or oily skin
darkened and/or sun-damaged skin
fine lines and wrinkles
overall texture of skin
Treatment Information
Lasting approximately 30 minutes, these treatments are quick and gentle, fitting nicely into your busy schedule.
Treatments can be combined with most skin care regimens and complete a safe, comprehensive approach to skin care.
Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels
With a targeted, controlled chemical process the skin can be revitalized in one session or offer even better results with a series of treatments.
Chemical peels help remove dead skin cells while simultaneously stimulating new skin cells to develop. The process helps improve fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin or age spots, and some shallow scars. Chemical peels can be performed on any part of the body and come in various concentrations or strengths with options of active chemical ingredients.
Patients with minor issues may only require a light chemical peeling process that results in minor skin irritation which resolves in two to three days.
Each session is tailor-made per patient with a range of acidic levels safely used with recovery times correlating directly to the depth of the peel.
Depending upon the desired result
he patient may choose between a full or partial peel (denoting either the full face or specifically targeted areas).
All peels include a therapeutic massage and a customized masque suited to your skin type.
Best results are achieved in a series followed by an easy maintenance program.
Peels Available
Glycolic Peel
this treatment uses pharmaceutical-grade glycolic acid that allows deep penetration and helps achieve dramatic improvement in epidermal texture. Lessening of superficial lines and hyperpigmentation produce a healthier, more youthful look and feel. Glycolic peels work well with any skin type or combination skin.
Lactic Peel
For dry skin, this type of chemical peel can help the skin hold water. It removes hyperpigmentation, clears pores, and may be helpful in treating acne and acne scarring. It is gentle relative to other chemical peels and can be used on various skin tones. It may be used to treat eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. It exfoliates, conditions, and moisturizes.
Salicylic Peel
used for oily skin in most cases, salicylic acid cleans the pores, balances oil production, and helps with fine lines and wrinkles. It treats acne, acne scarring, pigmentation issues, and enlarged pores.
Jessner's Peel
uses multiple selective ingredients to achieve a deeper peel without as much irritation. It is a medium-depth peel. A Jessner's peel can be used to treat photo aging, some kinds of acne, age spots, freckles, and pigmentation, and may work on melasma.
TCA Peels
using 30% trichloroaceticic acid, this is deeper than most superficial peels discussed in the menu. Because this treatment is more intense, patients may experience redness and peeling for up to a week and should be very careful of sun exposure during that period. The skin is completely healed in 10 to 14 days. The result is a healthy, radiant glow with fewer wrinkles, blemishes, and pigmentation irregularities.
Obagi Blue Peel
an innovation for restoring healthy and more beautiful skin. A slow-acting solution removes dead skin cells and stimulates the production of new skin cells. The slow action enables greater control of the peel process and its depth. It effectively improves fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, shallow acne-scars, sun-damaged skin, and freckling, in addition to tightening the skin. Obagi Blue Peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs.

A controlled, specific amount of pressure is used in rhythmic circular patterns to reach this result. Lymphatic massage is beneficial to surgery patients and can expedite healing time, help prevent hematomas, and help limit bruising and swelling. This massage is priced per minute at $1.50 per minute. Time is determined by desired results in a conversation between the patient and the massage therapist. For surgery patients, it has been recommended to have a total of five massages as follows: one prior to surgery, two massages the week following surgery, and two the next week - with each massage at a 20-minute duration.

Botox
BOTOX Cosmetic
Please check out the new BOTOX Cosmetic Visualizer below courtesy of Allergan.
This visualizer is complete with patient examples and even allows you to upload your own picture to see an example of what may be possible for you with BOTOX®.
Physicians have utilized BOTOX since 1989 to treat a variety of conditions.
The FDA approved it for cosmetic use in 2002. BOTOX Cosmetic treatments provide numerous patients with significant improvement on facial lines and wrinkles.
Facial lines are a result of a combination of causes, including sun exposure, skin atrophy, loss of skin elasticity, and excessive muscle activity.
Most importantly, facial lines are also a result of the skin pleating when underlying muscles contract.
Options as a line of defense to fight these facial lines include direct surgical incision
forehead lifts, face lifts, cosmetic fillers or fat injections, laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, and/or chemical peels. While all of these are effective, they ultimately do not address the underlying problem of muscle pull.
Many physicians use the facial rhytid (wrinkle) scale to assess the degree of wrinkles a patient has and ensure appropriate treatment, and for a medical point of reference to show a patient's progress
The scale follows: 0 = no facial wrinkles. 1 = facial wrinkles with movement. 2 = facial wrinkles with movement that remain while at rest. 3 = severe facial wrinkles with no movement required
BOTOX Cosmetic addresses this by temporarily eliminating the movement of the underlying muscle, allowing the skin to become smooth.
BOTOX does not eliminate those lines associated with age related loss of dermal elasticity or laxity of the skin.
BOTOX Cosmetic can be effectively used to treat the forehead, frown lines, crows feet, and brow elevation.

Dysport
Dysport
Dysport, made and distributed by the same company as Restylane and Perlane, was the first FDA-approved alternative product to Botox Cosmetic.
Dysport was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on April 29, 2009 for two separate indications
the treatment of cervical dystonia to reduce the severity of abnormal head position and neck pain in both toxin-naive and previously treated patients, and the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults younger than 65.
These frown lines or wrinkles are caused by the muscles that create facial expressions when these muscles are used often.
To correct, reduce, or minimize these lines or wrinkles, Dysport is injected into these muscles. It then stops these muscles for tightening for up to four months.
Similar to Botox Cosmetic, a Dysport treatment takes less than 30 minutes.
It may take from three to seven days for the product to take affect.

This area of cosmetic procedures and treatments continues to receive more and more attention.
Advancements in cosmetic fillers have given us a surge of products that are safer and last longer. These products provide the luxury of a quick result with minimal, if any, downtime.
Every year millions of Americans seek treatment of wrinkles and have non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
These treatments include Botox, IPL Photorejuvenation, and cosmetic fillers.
What causes these undesirable lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging or wear? Continuous movement dictates changes in our skin.
Smiling, talking, frowning, and smoking are all contributing factors. Coupled with environmental factors, fine lines and wrinkles affect most of us.
If you are interested in learning more about fillers and finding out
if they are for you, or if you have interest in any other cosmetic surgery procedures or treatments in the Houston metro area, please call us at (281) 894-9990 or email us with your name, phone number, and area of interest, so that we may contact you to schedule a free, one-on-one consultation. A consultation is the best way to have all of your questions and concerns answered and get all the information you need to make your decision.
At Winds of Change
you will receive the special, individualized care that you deserve. Our staff strives to exceed expectations beyond patient satisfaction. Please let us know how we may help you achieve your goals.
Some of the more popular cosmetic injectables
that alleviate these issues are JUVEDERM Injectable Gels (Ultra and Ultra Plus), Perlane, Radiesse, and Restylane
Patients now have the chance to utilize quick noninvasive
non-surgical techniques to correct their fine lines. Cosmetic fillers are used today to do exactly what the name implies. Fine lines, wrinkles, and scars can be filled from underneath the skin to make them less noticeable or perhaps even invisible.
With the increased interest and demand for these type of treatments
there has been a vigorous emphasis on improving them. A new group of products is made of synthetic hyaluronic acid. (Hyaluronic Acid is a polysaccharide that also naturally occurs within the body. Because of this the body does not treat these substances as foreign material. Ultimately the body naturally absorbs these products as it would for its own hyaluronic acid.) These products add volume to the facial tissue resulting in a smoother, wrinkle-free appearance. They are injected into the mid to deep dermis (below the outer layer of skin) for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the creases running from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).
JUVEDERM Ultra and Ultra Plus, were FDA approved at the end of 2006
and were first available in January 2007. They are hylauronic acid products, made by Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, that have a similar composition to Restylane. JUVEDERM Injectable Gel uses a manufacturing process to provide the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any currently available hyaluronic acid dermal filler for the purpose of long-lasting results. This process works to create a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. All other currently approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are made of granular consistency gels. Originally FDA approved to last 6 months or longer, JUVEDERM Ultra and Ultra Plus received FDA approval for label extensions for up to 1 year; meaning it was shown in clinical data to demonstrate effects that may last up to a year. JUVEDERM Ultra Plus has a slightly higher volume for use in deeper folds and wrinkles. This product is comparable to Perlane and was actually released prior to Perlane. For more information on JUVEDERM Injectable Gel, please visit the JUVEDERM web site.
With consideration of the FDA approval
we still think expecting the full or complete result of JUVEDERM Ultra and Ultra Plus to last one year may not be realistic for most patients. While there may be a partial result that lasts that long, we find in our patients that most who choose any of these hyaluronic products (JUVEDERM Ultra and Ultra Plus, Perlane, and Restylane) are likely to see a reduction in the result at 6 to 9 months and are interested in having another injection treatment at that time.
These treatments can take 30 to 45 minutes.
Anesthesia is not required, but a topical numbing cream can be administered at the patient's discretion. This can extend the time an appointment takes.
At Winds of Change
we have experience with all of the approved choices of filler products and can discuss these with you privately in a free consultation.
Normally, the product is administered on the same day as your visit with virtually no down time.
There is the possibility of mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site(s) that should begin to subside immediately following the injection(s).
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment
you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the healthcare professional treating you prior to your treatment. During a consultation, every detail of the process will be discussed including post-treament care, as well as mention of optional treatments, so that you may decide on the best treatment for you.
These fillers are used almost exclusively on the face.
Popular treated conditions include:
Smile Lines
the nasolabial folds are deepened valleys that develop from the corner of the nose and extend to the corners of the mouth.
Marionette Lines
these fine lines or valleys develop at the corner of the mouth and extend downward, often creating the look of a permanent frown.
Scars
acne scars, "pock marks," or scars from previous trauma or illness (i.e. chicken pox scars)
Frown Lines
the lines between the eyes
Lips
lip volume decreases with age. Fillers can recreate the youthful appearance of the lips with fuller lip volume. These products can be used directly in the lips or more subtly in the lip border to smooth fine lines surrounding the lips.

This sub-specialty of cosmetic fillers expanded dramatically
with the December 2003 FDA approval of Restylane. It became the first FDA-approved filler made of a synthetic, biodegradable hyaluronic acid. It works by adding volume to the skin. Because of its makeup, Restylane does not require a pre-treatment skin test.
It has been used in more than 60 countries outside of the United States since 1996.
Canada approved its use in 1998. It officially became available in the U.S. on January 15, 2004. Restylane produces results that last 6 months or longer. For more information on Restylane, visit the Restylane website.
In 2007 Perlane was introduced by the makers of Restylane
Medicis Aesthetics, a McKesson company. Perlane has the same composition as Restylane. The difference is, Perlane gel particles are larger and designed for deeper injection than Restylane. Perlane is indicated for deeper folds and wrinkles.

Radiesse is another product that has recently received interest as a cosmetic filling product.
Manufactured by Bioform, Inc., it was previously FDA-approved for certain facial reconstructive procedures. Different from JUVEDERM and Restylane, it is not recommended for use in the lips.
It received FDA approval in December of 2006 for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles
and folds such as nasolabial folds. It has been used worldwide for these purposes. Its main component is calcium hydroxylapatite, a synthetic compound. The product provides immediate improvement and may allow the body to generate new collagen. Results are reported to last for 12 to 18 months or longer. It is more expensive per treatment than either JUVEDERM or Restylane, but can last twice as long. For more information on Radiesse, please visit the Radiesse web site.
These treatments can take 30 to 45 minutes.

Voluma
Voluma
Juvederm Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved filler for use in adding volume to the cheek area.
t provides a subtle lift and helps restore contour for 16 24 months. Volume and volume loss in the cheeks is a major factor in the youthful appearance of an individual's profile. With age, the typical curve of the cheek starts to flatten and some sagging occurs. This can also appear as sagging skin when someone looks or tilts her or his head downward.
The development of Voluma comes in part from approaching facial aesthetics differently; by addressing the 3-dimensional effects of aging.
oluma is an addition to the group of FDA-approved injectable products that provide quick
lasting results, with minimal downtime. It is injected under the skin using a fine needle.
Voluma is specifically formulated to correct volume loss and enhance contour to the cheeks and check area.
Prior to the launch of Voluma, other products may have been used "off-label" to correct loss of volume in the cheek area.
The goal of cheek augmentation is to restore a natural-looking curve to the face.
Allergan, Voluma's manufacturer calls this the ogee curve.
Some studies show that up to 76% of people still experience a partial effect 2 years after treatment.
Patients in the trial reported to see themselves as 3 to 5 years younger looking after Voluma. In clinical trials, 90% of patients reported an overall satisfaction.
Similar to other Juvederm products
Ultra and Ultra Plus, Voluma comes in an XC formulation which includes lidocaine. Often an additional topical numbing cream is applied to the area prior to injection to help with any potential discomfort.
IS VOLUMA RIGHT FOR YOU?
When looking at a mirror, gently move your cheek upward and downward to notice the difference. This can demonstrate lost volume.
Non-surgical
Minimal swelling, bruising, downtime
May provide a more youthful appearance
Contains hyaluronic acid, a natural product found in the body that provides fast results, but is also dissolvable if the patient desires.
The different areas of the cheek are called
The zygomatic arch or apex
the higher portion of the cheek under the outer part of the eye
The anteromedial cheek or apple
the center part of the cheek
The submalar region or hollow
the lower portion of the cheek
Consultations
Winds of Change Consultations
Surgery consultation availability with Dr. Sumpter is on Mondays, Tuesday afternoons.
and Wednesday afternoons. Dr. Sumpter prefers to keep all injectable appointments, including consultations for Botox and fillers, on Thursdays. Skin care consultations with Connie Mize are available Mondays through Fridays by appointment.
We believe strongly in the importance of the consultation.
Beyond first impressions, it is the best opportunity for each individual to get the best information we can provide as it applies specifically to him or her.
At Winds of Change, the consultation is one-on-one directly with the provider who will be performing your treatment
procedure, or creating a skin care product regimen. Dr. Sumpter conducts all surgery consultations. Botox, or cosmetic filler consultations may be with Dr. Sumpter or her nurse, depending upon which is performing your treatment. For Ultherapy, skin care treatments and products, it will primarily be with our clinical aesthetician, Connie Mize. We feel this is the best way to give you the information you are seeking. It also allows you to get to know our staff and discuss all the details you are interested in. We do not set time limits on consultations and they can last 45 minutes on occasion. What is important is that we do our best to answer every question you have so that you can make the decision(s) best for you.
For many years all of our consultations were offered free of charge.
Due to unexpected changes, there may be a small charge to schedule your consultation appointment. In this case, that fee is applicable to any and all services and products we offer. For patients interested in seeking insurance assistance or appealing to an insurance company to cover a procedure, we are required to take the specialists copay. We are out of network with most insurance plans. Knowing your own personal policy will help determine what is possible. We have found that, in most cases, insurance companies will not cover most of these procedures.
We appreciate your time and effort in considering us for your procedure, treatment, or product adviser.
We understand that you have options and thank you. We know you will be happy in choosing and trusting us with your care.
Pre-Op Appointment
Your Pre-Operative Appointment with Winds of Change
Although there are many circumstances when timing, either the patient's schedule and availability
or Dr. Sumpter's, come into play, the usual sequence of events is as follows: your consultation, followed by your pre-op appointment, your surgery, then your post-operative appointments (as determined by Dr. Sumpter per your procedure and need).
It's important to remember with elective cosmetic surgery that the timing is completely up to you, the patient.
There may be some parameters based on the doctor's schedule and her considering the information you provide, but ultimately the timing is still up to you.
Once you've had a consultation, how you proceed depends upon your comfort level.
We do have some patients who come in for a second consultation after having time to process the information, or when considering adding another procedure to the same surgery date.
As you select a surgery date, we make arrangements for your deposit and schedule your pre-operative appointment.
We require a deposit of 20% of the full surgery price within 48 hours of securing you a surgery date.
If you are paying by cash or check, we offer an additional 5% discount.
If you are paying by one of the finance plans we accept, we require you to pay 5% down and send us paperwork from the finance company stating you are approved. Please contact us if you have any questions related to paying for your surgery.
You can expect your pre-op appointment to last 45 minutes.
We prefer to have your pre-op appointment scheduled no later than 1 full week prior to your surgery date. At your pre-operative appointment, you will read the applicable disclosure, consent, and post-operative care forms. You will meet with Dr. Sumpter to go over these forms and upon approving the information, you will be asked to sign these forms. You will have every opportunity to address any additional questions with Dr. Sumpter.
You may, as many are, be interested in adding something to your surgery time.
We will do everything we can to accommodate those requests. Dr. Sumpter will take your "before" procedure photographs, and, after paying your balance, your will be on your way.
Throughout the process, including the time between your pre-op and your surgery, we are always available to you should you have any questions.
We have many out-of-town patients who are interested in combining appointments.
(For example the pre-op and the consultation.) We do so when this is the only clear option for someone. We can make different arrangements as needed and as circumstances dictate, and are happy to do so.
Your Procedure
Your Procedure with Winds of Change
On the day of your procedure, you will be asked to be at your facility of choice one hour prior to surgery time.
Dr. Sumpter primarily uses Cy Fair Surgery Center, Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, and Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center.
Your options for a facility can be further discussed in your consultation.
You will not be able to eat or drink anything from midnight the night prior to your surgery day until after your surgery.
You will check in with the facility and the surgical support staff will assist you in preparing for your surgery.
Dr. Sumpter will see and meet with you prior to surgery.
Following surgery, it will be up to the surgical support staff
and Dr. Sumpter to allow your release so that you may be taken home. This can take approximately an hour following the actual surgery time.
It is important to note that you will not be able to drive yourself home following surgery.
It is not necessary for someone to wait at the facility the entire time you are in surgery.
Most patients have someone come with them or drop them off and have that same person come back and pick them up following the procedure.
You can make whatever arrangements are most comfortable to you.
Post-Op & Follow-Ups
Your Post-Operative Experience with Winds of Change
Depending on the procedure or procedures you have had, your first post-operative appointment may be anywhere from the day after surgery to three to five days following surgery.
We prefer it to be sooner, but it can vary based on Dr. Sumpter's recommendation taking into account the distance you would be required to travel, the specific procedure(s) you have had, and the total amount of surgery time. You will however be contacted and able to contact Dr. Sumpter, our office, and support staff at any time throughout this process.
At your first pre-operative appointment
Dr. Sumpter will unwrap the surgical dressing, take the first look, and then redress the area. This first appointment is usually relatively short.
Following your first post-op appointment referred to above
you will be asked to come back in one week's time. There is some variation in what this appointment includes based on your surgery.
We are happy to see patients at additional appointments as the need arises.
ost-operative or follow-up care is an extremely important part of patient care, and a responsibility.
We ask all of our patients to come back for three-, six-, and twelve- month follow-ups so that Dr. Sumpter may take post-operative "after" photographs for your medical record.

2006, Breast Reduction
"I am very happy with my results. I can actually buy an outfit that I don't have to have altered. I haven't seen my rib cage in so long I was shocked when I looked in the mirror and there it was! All of this coming from a patient who used to believe plastic surgery was for the really vain or reconstruction patients. You have transformed me both physically and mentally. I will always be grateful." - LT
2005, Breast Augmentation
"I went to several free consults with other doctors prior to choosing Dr. Sumpter. I even received less expensive estimates. When I met with Dr. Sumpter, I knew immediately that she would be the doctor to perform my procedure. When Dr. Sumpter examined my breast size, she explained that I was born with a special condition that caused my breasts to not develop. All of my life I didn't understand why I never developed breasts. I asked several doctors and not one knew the answer. Dr. Sumpter knew the name of the condition. It was a relief to understand the cause of my disfigurement. I then asked Dr. Sumpter to make me normal. She not only made my breasts normal, she made them perfect. Dr. Sumpter thoroughly explained all aspects of my procedure. She even explained how I would feel physically and emotionally. The procedure was completed exactly as Dr. Sumpter promised. The follow-ups were provide with the same care and attention as the pre-surgical visits. I am very thankful to have chosen Dr. Sumpter and her staff." - KB
2004, Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty and Neck Lift
"I thought about doing something for five years. I was worried about the patiI had surgery because there are so many things in life you can't change and this was something I could change! It was time to do something for me! I chose Dr. Sumpter because she let me decide just what I wanted done. She didn't try to persuade me to do anything else. I'm very happy with the results. My twin broth thinks it made a huge difference in my appearance. Dr. Sumpter made the entire experience pleasant. I would recommend her highly!" - DC
2004, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
"I considered the surgery for about a year. I was concerned about the price and that it was a major surgery. From the first consultation, I felt Dr. Sumpter was warm, genuine and competent. She's the kind of person I could sit in the kitchen and visit. And I felt that acceptance and connection right away." - RL
2004, Breast Augmentation, Mini-abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) and Liposuction
"I am so excited! I love my new look. I am wearing a smaller dress size and love my breasts! I recommend Dr. Sumpter to everyone. She has the best bed side manner, and made me feel very comfortable. My mother had the same procedures with another doctor, spent more than me and is dissatisfied. These procedures have changed my life! I am more confident, I have stuck to a strict diet for 5 months now. It is a complete lifestyle change. I would gladly share my story with others to show how amazing Dr. Sumpter is. (My husband agrees.) I have had 2 children and have a much better body now than I did before I had children. I can wear a bkikin without shorts for the first time in my life and no more padded bras." - AL
2003, Breast Augmentation
"I have to thank you. Not only were my breasts little, but got even worse after my daughter that I couldn't wear the clothes I wanted to. I am so happy because they are perfect for me, and now so beautiful. I feel like a woman! Thank you again for changing my life and being the catalyst in doing so.
