The Wharf Rat– an affectionate 18th century term for seafarers, pirates, and privateers– is the inspiration for our pub in Fell's Point, owned and operated by the Oliver family. One of only a few authentic period pubs remaining in Baltimore’s original seaport and a favorite port of call for sailors and adventurers from around the world, our pub captures the spirit of the glorious days of wooden ships and iron men.
The Olivers’ origins of waterfront hospitality dates back to Merry Ole England where Oliver’s Wharf, still standing on the banks of the Thames in east London, played host to pirates and vagabonds awaiting their appointment next door at Execution Dock. In the romantic days of billowing white sails and colorful characters, inns and pubs prepared their own food and made their own beer as well. We celebrate those days at The Wharf Rat. We are dedicated to preserving their spirit by serving “Only the Best Beers” from the seven seas and lovingly prepared home cooked foods, brought to you in an authentic waterfront atmosphere filled with antiques and collections, reminiscent of the glory days of old Fell's Point.
The Wharf Rat is located in the heart of Fells Point, Baltimore just steps from the waters that were once host to one of the main sea ports on the East Coast. Our building dates back to the late 1700s and is rumored to be haunted by a number of its old patrons, including a former landlord who was murdered in a duel in the early 1900s. Sightings are most often in the second floor windows and the 12 foot working fireplace (a haven on those cold winter days). If you chart a course for the shores of old Baltimore, put in, enjoy a pint or two and foods such as authentic English beer-battered fish and chips. You’ll find a warm welcome and a safe harbor.
