Thirty years ago, my mom and dad planted the first vineyard on the 15 acre bench in the middle of our ranch. Its top soil is 2 to 3 foot deep, greyish brown, gravelly loam that offers life to its vines on top of an ominously impervious layer of sandstone. It is a lean top soil in terms of fertility, and it definitely governs the vigor and morphology of the vines that grow in it. It is this layer of soil that I refer to as this vineyard's Top Cream. As a terroir it is ideal for growing the kind of Chardonnay that spreads its wings when put through a full-blown Burgundian style of winemaking. The trick to it all is to have the right Chardonnay grapes to begin with, and the trick to having the right grapes is to have the right soil. Indeed, the trick is in having the right TOP CREAM. - Bryan Babcock
Pinot Noir '15 "Déjà Vu" Bentrock Vineyard - Santa Rita Hills AVA
Within the 85 acre Bentrock Vineyard there are two contiguous 4 acre blocks that together may comprise the greatest vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Location is part of it. Bentrock is in the heart of the western end of the appellation, the end that is making the darkest, most concentrated wines. It lies between Sanford & Benedict to the east, and Radian to the west. So, another good name for Bentrock might be Between The Titans. Blocks 2 and 3 are on a sublime 15 acre hill top that protrudes out into the Santa Ynez River Valley from the north facing Santa Rosa Hills. It is completely exposed to the ocean breeze that runs through the valley almost every day. It is stunning and it is majestic, and it lies on top of one of those hills that I used to stare at for the first 20 years of my career, wondering what if? What if that little bench up there had Pinot Noir planted on it?
My Ocean's Ghost Pinot Noir is the result of a truly supernatural approach. Super "natural" farming, that is, where unencumbered vines are invited to grow freely with one of nature's ultimate masters; gravity. Untangling the tendrils of the vine's individual shoots so that their clusters sway perfectly in and out of direct sunlight as the breezes push through the Sta. Rita Hills, has also taken the Ghost offering up layers of black fruits, forrest floor, dried rose petal, and a suggestion of violets. Super natural farming + great terroir = Ocean's Ghost. ~ Bryan Babcock
