Fighters' Evolution...Are You Strong Enough?!...
Starting out as a Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Stylist, I sought to develop kicks like the wind.
Watching boxers like Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, I felt that boxers had the best hands.
After meeting World Kickboxing Champion, Jeff Gripper, my path was set.
Through him, I met the legendary boxing trainer, Asa Gordon.
With Asa, I would train with the best of the best in Kickboxing and Boxing.
Being a constant study of martial arts, I would meet fighters of different disciplines and pick up techniques from other arts. I would study Muay Thai and the grappling arts.

Shidokan Karate... A Modern Style...
Shidokan Karate is the style created by Yoshiji Soeno.
SHI signifies Samurai (Warrior), DO is the way and KAN represents a group or organization. Therefore the name "Shi-do-kan is translated as "A group who lives and trains in the way of the Samurai warrior".
Shidokan is a modern style of karate.
The techniques of this style have been adopted from various systems. Only those considered most effective were chosen. Shidokan includes karate techniques (on the basis of Shotokan and Kyokushin), Muay Thai techniques, judo, jujitsu and grappling/submission wrestling techniques.
Shidokan Karate training consists of three principles
Karate, Kick boxing, and Grappling. Bare Knuckle Karate is a form of full contact fighting. Kicks are aimed at the legs, trunk and head (including knee kicks). Punches and elbows are possible at the trunk only. Grabbing of the hands and legs (contrary to other full contact karate systems), clinching and grabbing the gi are taught. Sweeping and throwing techniques are allowed. Because no gloves or shin/foot guards are involved, this type of fighting requires special conditioning to prepare the body for empty hand combat. Fighting with the Gi (uniform) teaches one to fight in clothes.
The second principle is kickboxing.
Techniques from western boxing and Muay Thai are emphasized. Because of this, Shidokan students must develop proficiency in boxing.
The third principle of Shidokan is grappling.
Grabbing the limbs, sweeps, throws and ground fighting/submission are emphasized. Grappling addresses the question of "What will happen if the fight goes to the ground?" This phase makes Shidokan Karate a complete martial art. Joint manipulation, chokes, pins and restraining techniques are taught.
Shidokan Karate is both art and sport.
The sport aspect is known as "The Triathlon of Martial Arts" where competitors compete in karate, kickboxing and grappling rules. To win a Shidokan tournament a champion has to defeat 3 opponents in a tournament. This makes for an extremely grueling event, where elite physical condition, skill, technique, heart and determination are a must to be victorious. Shidokan promotions have aired on ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports and Pay Per View.
Yoshiji Soeno was norn September 9th 1947, in TokorozawaShi, Saitama, Japan. From childhood, he was very interested in martial arts, and learned both Judo and Kendo.
Originally he found that Karate was not strong compared to Judo, but when he was fifteen Karate had evolved and was becoming much stronger. He first studied Wadoryu and then joined Oyama Dojo (Kyokushinkai) under Masutatsu Oyama.
After entering Johsai University, he founded the Karatedo club and taught karate and kick-boxing.
In his debut tournament, he was treated as a main contender and went on to win the finals of the first All Japan Karatedo Championships. People admired his braveness and called him the "Tiger of Johsai" or "Brave Tiger of the Kyokushin". He also practiced Muay Thai in Bangkok, Karate in USA, and become the World Open Kyokushin (knock down) Champion.
After graduating he opened 'Soeno Dojo' and 'Soeno Gym', giving lessons in both karate and kick-boxing.
In 1981 he founded The World Karatedo Association Shidokan and The Japan Fighting Association New Fighting Shidokan. Shidokan is considered to take the best from karate, kick-boxing, and Judo. He respects the Japanese traditional Bushido spirits, encompassing the good parts of martial arts and combining them with spirit to progress the teaching and practice of karate. Shidokan spirit is Japanese Samurai spirit. Master Soeno still practices these techniques but the most important thing is the spirit.
Starting in his youth, Shihan Yoshimura studied the art of Shotokan Karate.
Throughout the years he would train in various disciplines including, judo, boxing, kickboxing, and kobudo (Okinawan weaponry). Through his gym, the Chicago Fitness Center, he would attract top martial artists to come train. In this environment martial artists from different backgrounds would combine their knowledge to find the most effective fighting techniques. Some of U.S. Shidokan's key members (Bo Medenica, Ralph Linares, Pat Gulliano, and James Albaran), would train and compete in various styles of combat arts and bring that knowledge back to the collective. Having a career in law enforcement has allowed Shihan Yoshimura to experience the most effective and practical techniques in reality defense.
Yasunori Matsumoto would eventually come to the U.S. from Japan.
Sent by Kancho Soeno, his mission was to spread Shidokan to America. He befriended Shihan Yoshimura and the United States Shidokan Association was founded. Shihan Yoshimura traveled to Japan over the years to study with Kancho. U.S. Shidokan started the Annual Shidokan open as one of the premier bare knuckle karate touranments in American in the early 90s. By the mid 90s, bouts that ended in draws were determined by adding kickboxing rounds. Soon after, grappling rounds were added to the tournament and the "Triathlon Of Martial Arts" was created.
Shihan Yoshimura took his World Open promotions to TV. Through ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports and Pay Per View, Shidokan would gain international recognition.
This helped spread the sport and the art of Shidokan Karate. By keeping it's base in Bare Knuckle Karate, and adding Muay Thai and Grappling, Shidokan has stayed on the cutting edge in showing what works in combat.
Shidokan Dojo Oath...
Keep the Samurai Spirit.
(The spirit of serve is the beginning path in The Way of the Samurai and is the desired spirit of those who strive in this way. While living within society, regardless of where or what one is doing one must not engage in things that will lead one to stray from the path).
Improve your character.
Be polite to others. ("Respect" as it is in the Way of the Samurai is personally achieved through strict trial and training. By enduring and progressing in a positive manner, a humble heart and mind is born, which naturally takes the form of "respect."
Train your mind and body.
(Always train one's body and mind; strive and endeavor to improve yourself as a person.
Live in a simple way, love all mankind, respect providence.
(The goodness and badness of matters is relative. Even in achievements, one can never attain heartfelt satisfaction. Without being taken in by a perceived richness or lack of richness, one must try and find the richness within one's own spirit.
Self seek fight is not allowed.
(Martial arts are not about killing, but living to the fullest. The Way of the Samurai is the spirit to serve others, even as far as laying down one's life for society and humankind).
Judo / Grappling Instructors
The art of Judo was developed by Jigoro Kano in 1882.
Judo is both a system of self -defense as well as an Olympic Sport. Judo is a form of Ju Jitsu as it was developed from different styles that Kano practiced. Judo has both standing and ground techniques. Kodokan Judo has striking techniques also.
Having used Judo effectively in his Shidokan Triathon (Karate, Kickboxing & Grappling) experiences, Sensei Trammell has incorporated Judo in Shidokan Atlanta's Karate Curriculum.
Having trained under Judo Master Nak Jun Kim, 2X Olympian Leo White, and National Champion Joshua White, he has decided to add a Judo curriculum to our dojo for those who wish to further develop their judo knowledge.
As of 2011, Shidokan Atlanta kids and adults have participated in Judo competition.
We are developing a team for those who wish to compete. For all, we now have a curriculum where students can earn rank in Judo. All participating in the Judo/Grappling program will be required to become members of USA Judo. Whether for recreation, competition, fitness, self-defense, train to the best of your abilities.
Joshua White (Judo Champion)
Joshua started training in Judo at age 4. He has won numerous championships over the years. He has been a Junior National Champion and High School National Champion. In addition to Judo, Josh has competed in MMA, full contact karate and sanshou.

Martial Arts Style Training
Combat Athletes are some of the most conditioned athletes in the world. Looking at boxers, wrestlers, kickboxers, and mixed martial artists, it's is evident that these athletes are in tremendous shape. Our instructors have years of experience in almost every form of combat sport. Because of this diverse pool of knowledge, we are able to cross train our clients in a way that works their body in the most functional methods. The striking martial arts work the muscular and cardio systems one way while grappling arts work them in another way. By combining methods of both, one get's the ultimate workout. Mixed Martial Arts is rapidly growing because of the training that athletes must go through. In the Olympics, the Decathlete is known as the greatest athlete because of the many attributes required. Todays martial arts athlete is like a decathlete, in that he/she develops skillsets in several areas to be well rounded. By training this way, one gets in the best shape imaginable.
Intensely Designed Workouts
Every workout at Trammell Fitness and Martial Arts is different. In one hour, clients will develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and power. Through muscle confusion, the body is constantly challenged so it doesn't get used to one method. Because different energy systems are being used all of the time, the body is always guessing. This constant stimulation challenges our clients so they are constantly improving. Using the body to box, kick, lift, run, and jump in different ways improves focus, motor skills, concentration, and power that clients are able to use in other activities. Most of the training focuses on one's own body and minimal equipment. At our gym we have a saying, "The body is the greatest machine ever created". So, we make sure we use it!!
Mental And Physical Conditioning
At Trammell Fitness and Martial Arts, we believe that a strong body makes a strong mind. Because we challenge our clients physically we are able to conditioning them mentally. Many times we've shown clients that they can do more than what they thought. We work with clients who have physical challenges and teach them to overcome negative thoughts and find the positive by working through challenges. We've taken clients and entered events like the Spartan Run to encourage fitness through team work. We have students as young as 4 and over 60, who've competed in martial arts tournaments. Everyone who trains with us will develop a strong body, giving them a strong mind, that gives them a strong spirit.
Latest In Dieting & Nutrition
Dieting And Nurtition. Hello Fellow Martial Artist and Fitness Enthusiast!! Over the years, I've experimented with different nutrition plans. I competed as a full contact fighter for 25 years. During that time, I've had my share of injuries including 2 torn ACLs, a torn meniscus, and tendonitis. Three years ago I got back into competition as a Master's athlete in the sport of Judo. Locally, I been state champion, winning the young men's division. I've won a National Championship, I competed in the IJF World Grandmasters Championships, and I was ranked number one in my division by USA Judo for the past 2 years. My day at the gym starts at 6 am and ends at 8pm. Through the day I train clients, teach classes and workout myself. It is hard to get all the nutrients I need. So, I got with the experts in the nutrition industry to come up with products that would allow a busy guy like me to stay on top. Now, it is a available for you!
