Thai Massage with owner, Anthony Wood
Often dubbed by Westerners as "lazy-man's yoga," Thai Massage is considered inThailand one of the four branches of Traditional Thai Medicine. Though indigenous to Thai culture, Thai massage's influences can be strongly linked to Indian and Chinese traditional medicine systems. Through a series of assisted stretches, not unlike yoga asanas, as well as the application of rhythmic acupressure along sen lines (energy meridians), the practitioner lulls the recipient into a deeply relaxed state as the body/mind is brought back into greater harmony. Thai massage has been practiced for thousands of years. A session is typically given on the floor or ground on a specially-designed mat. The recipient wears loose, comfortable clothing for optimal movement and massage oil is not used. As its popularity and acclaim has grown, so has the demand for Thai massage in European and Western cultures alike. It is becoming more of a prevalent modality offered on Spa menus across North America.

Past-life Regression

When we acknowledge our Soul's energy as having this same quality, the theory is... that when we die, our Soul changes shape rather than ceasing to exist. Those who embrace this outlook, many times remark on how instances like deja-vu or meeting someone you feel you've known all your life, are our human experiences of this eternal connection to the infinite energetic journey of our Soul. What if you could discover why you: a.) have specific phobias b.) are strongly attracted to certain topics c.) possess a deep desire within you to travel to a particular country d.) are entranced by an ancient civilization? The truth is that none of can prove what comes before or after this lifetime, if anything. However, the exploration of this mystery has entranced generations since the beginning of time. There will be two separate sessions scheduled (60 minutes each) as a two-part appointment when booking this service. (Each session is $100.) (2) 60-min sessions: ($200)

Ashtanga Yoga
The eight limbed yoga of Patanjali: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi.
Bandha
"binding, bondage;" a posture in which organs and muscles are contracted and controlled creating a psychomuscular energy lock which redirects the flow of energy or prana in the body and locks it into a specific area.
Chakra
A sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "circle"; usually refers to the centers or points of spiritual power that resides in or compose the human astral / subtle body. They are considered to have correspondences with the physical body and function as psychic portals to the world at large.
Hatha Yoga
Science of yoga which purifies the whole physical body by means of asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, concentration; a prelude to raja yoga and samadhi.
Iyengar
Form of hatha yoga founded by B.K.S. Iyengar. It is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration. It is unique for its use of props such as straps, blocks and cushions to assist in doing the postures with correct alignment.
Mantra
A sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation or incantation, such as an invocation to God or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical potentialities.
Mudra
Literally means "gesture;" physical, mental and psychic attitude which expresses and chanels cosmic energy within mind and body.

Sanskrit
The ancient sacred language of the Aryans. The Sanskrit language possesses voluminous and valuable works in prose and in verse, some of which, like the Vedas, date back, in the opinion of certain scholars, to the year 30,000 BC or even far beyond. Almost every phrase of philosophic thought expressed and studied in the West, is represented in one form or another in ancient Hindu literature. Besides this, these old Sanskrit writings are replete with recondite subjects dealing with the wondrous.
Savasana
Sava/Shava means corpse or dead body. A resting posture in which the senses are drawn inward and the physical body is at complete ease.
Practice Guidelines
Welcome to The Giving Tree Yoga Studio! We are delighted to have you as our guest. The following guidelines have been developed to ensure that every student has a positive and peaceful experience at our studio.
#1
Arrive to class on time. New students: please arrive 10-15 minutes early. Those arriving late are expected to wait in the common area until the teacher is finished with the opening meditation. Please check in and take care of payment arrangements before class.
#2
Remember to bring your own mat, but if you don't...we have them to rent for $1.
#3
Refrain from wearing scents. Many people are sensitive or allergic to various fragrances and scents.
#4
Please remove your shoes at the door (an ancient custom from the East). If possible, wear form fitting clothes and no shoes. Yoga is traditionally practice in bare feet, but if this is uncomfortable, socks are fine. Layers also help to adjust for temperature changes during and after class.
#5
Absolutely no cell-phones or pagers are allowed in the class even on the vibrating setting as this is many times still audible. Please place all valuables in your bag and store in the changing room or in the back of the room.
#6
If possible, practice on an empty stomach. Wait at least 2-3 hours (or longer) after eating and empty the bladder and bowels. A full stomach is a hindrance to the correct practice of postures and breathing. If hungry before class, try a piece of fruit, a vegetable juice, or some tea.
#7
Inform the teacher before class if you have any injuries, diseases, recent surgeries, low back or disc problems, inflammation of the head, stomach, or eyes.
#8
It's okay to sweat which assists the purification process through movement and heat. Bring your own towel or practice rug to absorb sweat - our blankets are not to be used for this purpose.
#9
Your teacher may ask you not to drink water during class as it may reduce body heat and move energy in a downward direction (apana). The focus in an asana practice is on upward flow (prana). However, if refraining from hydration is too much, please listen to your body and do what is best for you. If you are dizzy, immediately sit down.
#10
Be considerate of the sacredness of the space - pick up after yourself. Practice good "Prop-asana" - please fold blankets neatly and replace all props in an organized fashion. Leave the space in better shape than you found it.
#11
Keep voices low when socializing in the common area as other classes may still be in progress.
#12
Occasional spurts of aggressive, imbalanced practice are dangerous. Do your best to approach each pose especially inversions - with care and respectful caution.
#13
Regular practice is necessary to receive the full benefits of yoga.
#14
Inform the teacher if you are pregnant. Practice should always be done under the supervision of a physician.
#15
If comfortable, remove contact lenses before class and please remove glasses for savasana, the final relaxation. (Be sure to place glasses in a safe place - maybe on a block so the teacher will not accidentally step on them.
#16
During the menstrual cycle, inversions are sometimes not so comfortable. Listen to your body and make a decision that is appropriate for you.
#17
Be sure to notify the teacher of any injuries or medical conditions. This helps the teacher know how to assist you and give you modifications.

"Never underestimate the power of a small, dedicated group of people to change the world indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead. Since we opened our doors 3 years ago, our efforts in building community have provided a place of inclusivity in Astoria. The Giving Tree is expanding this intention becoming a center of global awareness and community activism providing leadership, vision and opportunities for action. Astoria is the most culturally diverse neighborhood in the world and therefore a microcosm of our global community. Too often, we see things going on in our world (genocide, devastation, corruption in government) and feel powerless. Sometimes all we can think about is balancing making a living and/or pursuing a dream. These injustices fade into the background and we can't conceive of where to start, many times feeling alone in our plight with little energy left to give. Fighting each other, claiming 'sides' through political parties, and being manipulated by our TVs and corrupt, governmental institutions is a thing of the past. Power is moving back in the hands of the people if we work together. Come hear from local leaders, watch clips from informative documentaries and discuss. If you feel called to make a difference or have ideas for these efforts, please attend! "When you're feeling helpless, help someone." Ang Sang Suu Kyi.
