Prolotherapy
An Alternative Approach to Pain Treatment. Dr. David Pawsat of The Center for Optimal Health offers Prolotherapy treatments for chronic pain due to damaged or weak tendons, ligaments, and joints as an alternative to traditional approaches. The following are answers to commonly asked questions about Prolotherapy. Please do not hesitate to call our office at 517-324-9400 if we can answer additional questions or to schedule your first treatment.
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a well-established orthopedic procedure that stimulates the body’s innate ability to strengthen damaged or weak ligaments, tendons and joints. "Prolo" is short for proliferation; the treatment is considered “Prolo”therapy because it causes proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament or tendon tissue in areas where they have become weak. Weak ligaments and tendons are often times the cause of much pain and joint damage. When these weak tissues are treated with Prolotherapy they become stronger. Stronger ligaments or tendons cause joint and muscle function to improve. Improved function means less pain. Traditional approaches, such as surgery, physical therapy or anti-inflammatory drugs, often fail to stabilize the joint or provide lasting relief from pain. Prolotherapy directly addresses the cause of the instability by strengthening and healing stretched, torn, or fragmented ligaments and tendons.
How does Prolotherapy work?
Precise injections are made directly into the damaged ligaments, tendons or joints. This creates a mild, controlled inflammatory response that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This process promotes new fiber growth and tightening.
What are some of the common conditions that respond well to Prolotherapy?
Many spine and neck conditions (i.e. sacral torsions, spinal misalignment); Headaches; Degenerative joints; Torn ligaments and cartilage; Knees, elbows, shoulders (i.e. rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow); Feet and ankles (i.e. chronic sprains, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis); Fibromyalgia; TMJ.
Is the treatment permanent?
The benefits of Prolotherapy are generally regarded as permanent. By restoring structural integrity to the ligament and joint, the relief from pain and dysfunction can be permanent. Pain sometimes recurs episodically, but is usually less severe, and more easily treated with a single injection.
What is in the solution that is injected?
Prolotherapy injections contain anesthetic agents and natural substances (such as sugar water and Lidocaine) which stimulate the healing response.
Is the Prolotherapy treatment painful?
Most patients find the pain from treatments to be minimal; however, some pain from the injection can be expected. For up to three days following a treatment one may experience some aching, swelling and stiffness. The discomfort passes rapidly and can be reduced with Tylenol.
Can Prolotherapy help everyone?
The vast majority of patients can be helped by Prolotherapy. Each patient must be evaluated thoroughly with a patient history; physical exam, and if needed X-ray or laboratory tests. This evaluation will be done in the initial consultation. After the initial evaluation Dr. Pawsat will determine whether you are a candidate for Prolotherapy.
How often do I need these treatments?
Treatments to the same area are scheduled anywhere from weekly to every 6 weeks. As a treated area heals treatments can be scheduled farther apart.
What is the cost of Prolotherapy treatments?
During an initial consultation the patient will be evaluated thoroughly with a history; physical exam, and if needed X-ray or laboratory tests. Prolotherapy may be administered during this initial evaluation. The initial consultation along with the initial treatment will cost $265.00. Some people are relieved with one treatment, while others require a number of treatments. If further treatment is required cost will range from $195.00 to $225.00, depending on the number of areas being treated.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
With all of the advances in modern medicine today, it is sometimes easy to forget the basics.
At times what a person really needs is the healing touch. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or OMM involves the use of hands on care to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness and injury. Addressing the inter-relationship of muscles, nerves, and bones, OMM can be useful to people of all ages to ease pain, promote healing, and increase mobility. Although treatment is often used to treat muscular pain it can also promote healing in areas such as sinus disorders, migraines, and menstrual pain.
During your assessment Dr. Blakeney will do a structural exam, checking posture, spine, and balance.
Using her hands she will feel your back, hands, and feet checking joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. She will then move your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. In order to continue the healing process at home, Dr.Blakeney will also recommend exercises and postural corrections in order to preserve the effects of your treatments.
At the core of Osteopathic Medicine is the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
In OMM the doctor’s role is to find structural alterations and by manipulation improve the structure as well as the function. The end result being restoration of the body as a whole to maintain better overall health. A thorough knowledge of all systems of the body and comprehensive training give the osteopathic approach make it a safe and effective form of manipulative therapy.
We have been taught to believe that with age alone our skin changes and loses elasticity.
Fortunately, mounting research has increased our understanding of what causes skin to age. With innovative approaches to skin care your skin can look better than ever, no matter what your age. What happens on the inside, both physically and emotionally can have a direct affect on your outward appearance. The signs of aging skin have less to do with age than with biology and exposures from the environment.
Healthy radiance starts on the inside.
At The Center for Optimal Health, skin care begins with a comprehensive understanding of you. Lifestyle, nutrition, and stress reduction are all important factors in the health of your skin. With an understanding of your individualized needs, we can help design a well rounded plan that is just right for you. This approach to healthy skin may also help to relieve other chronic skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and dermatitis. At The Center for Optimal Health we see the results of this inside-out approach in the skin of our patients - growing more vibrant each day. Let us help you too. There are many options, so let’s discuss how to get started.

Restylane
The Restylane family of products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Young skin is supple and full in part because of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps provide fullness and elasticity. There are many factors that contribute to skin aging, one of which is a loss of hyaluronic acid. As a result, your skin can begin to develop wrinkles and folds. The good news is you can do something about it. You can use the Restylane family of products to reveal a younger-looking you. Ask Dr. Blakeney which treatment is right for you.

Ondamed
Acute & Chronic Conditions Treatment. ONDAMED represents an innovative approach to helping patients with acute and chronic conditions, from emotional and neurologic conditions to acute sports injuries and everything in between. As a sophisticated biofeedback technology, the ONDAMED can help to evaluate energy imbalances in the body and assist with the restoration of energy balance with very precise electromagnetic impulses.
What is ONDAMED?
The ONDAMED website, www. ONDAMED.net, describes their technology as a battery-powered biofeedback device that a medical practitioner uses to determine which frequencies of sound, as well as accompanying weak pulsed electromagnetic fields, cause a response in a patient’s autonomic nervous system. Temporary stimulation by these frequencies, combined with the patient’s cognitive and non-cognitive participation, promotes relaxation, muscle re-education, and rehabilitation that may aid in returning the body to its former state of wellness. ONDAMED was invented by electronics engineer Rolf Binder in Schwanau, Germany. The technology is a culmination of 25 years of research in biophysical medical testing. Medical professionals world wide have been using ONDAMED with remarkable success for over a decade.
What is Energy Medicine?
The body is based on electro-magnetism, the heart is electric and so is the brain. Humans are electromagnetic beings, and are receptive to electromagnetic vibrations. ONDAMED stimulation induces subtle current impulses in the body’s fluids, organs, tissue, and cells. We use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to re-arrange hydrogen atoms in order to view a specific picture from the inside of the body. This approach is used with the ONDAMED technology. Scanning over the body with specific electromagnetic fields, we are creating magnetic resonance to identify the areas requiring attention, non-invasively with a field that is a million times lower than MRI technology.
Is ONDAMED safe?
The ONDAMED is registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Biofeedback Class II medical device, Category Neurology. It is not FDA approved to diagnose or treat any medical condition yet, but it has been approved for use under the supervision of AAABEM, an Institutional Review Board, as safe for research or clinical testing as a non-invasive secondary therapeutic device in the treatment of pain, discomfort, or general malaise. The ONDAMED has been used in Europe as an approved medical device for the last 15 years. It has only been in the United States for the past 10 years, mainly used by alternative and complementary medicine practitioners. The ONDAMED produces very low-level pulsed electromagnetic frequencies in the range of 0.1-32,000 Hz, which have not been shown to harm the body. Cell phones put out much stronger frequencies than this.
What does an ONDAMED treatment entail?
ONDAMED is a comprehensive system that focuses on underlying conditions rather than symptoms. During your session you will be seated, fully clothed, in a comfortable chair while your practitioner uses the ONDAMED equipment to painlessly scan your body for areas in need of attention. You may experience a mild tingling sensation, a feeling of warmth, or nothing at all. A typical treatment last about 30 minutes. Patients consistently report leaving a session feeling less pain, more relaxed and refreshed, able to think more clearly, and better prepared for life’s challenges.
Neuro Emotional Technique (NET)
Emotions such as fear, anger, grief and many others can negatively affect us long after the original event that caused them. When our body fails to let go of these emotions we can find ourselves with unexplained aversions, self-sabotaging behaviors, destructive beliefs, phobias and many chronic physical problems. NET is used to help you identify and let go of stuck emotional patterns.
Your NET Session
During an NET session Eva works with you to identify past events and situations that are linked to current emotions and feelings. You will form a mental picture of the original triggering event and be asked to connect with where the emotion may be stored. Finding and balancing these stuck memory loops is done with the help of simple muscle testing. The strength of your arm can reveal your congruence with the statements that are posed. Muscle weakness is a sign your body is harboring and unresolved emotional response in your body.
At The Center for Optimal Health we treat issues for their causes instead of just treating symptoms. Early detection, prevention, and reversal of aging-related diseases and employing therapies and treatments to optimize wellness are the focus of our practice.
Our patients are treated for their individual needs. Our doctors listen to their patient’s health concerns and devote the necessary time to understand their individual complexities. Through this process they are able to develop individualized plans to overcome chronic health issues and achieve wellness.
