Cryotherapy
Synergy Sports Therapy provides Cryotherapy services for athletes and active adults, as well as aesthetic and health & wellness benefits to the general public. Cryotherapy is endorsed by many doctors, professional athletes, teams, and trainers, Dr. Oz, The Doctors TV Show & ESPN. Synergy provides a natural, safe, noninvasive therapeutic program to aid in athletic performance and recovery, pain and inflammation reduction, and health & wellness by promoting and stimulating the body's natural healing process. We are proud to be the first Cryotherapy location in Ohio.
What is Cryotherapy?
Whole body cryotherapy was originally developed in Japan in 1978, and the benefits have been studied and refined in Europe since that time. Synergy uses a Cryosauna machine that uses liquid nitrogen to lower the client's exterior skin surface from room temperature to 30-35°F (with -202°F on surface of their skin) in 60 seconds or less and keeps it that way for up to 2.5 minutes.
How Does It Work?
A person's skin temperature initially drops to 32°F before rising to 95°F for 30-45 seconds (normal skin temperature is 90.5°) and then goes down to normal. This phenomena results in en energy boost and skin rejuvenation. That effect lasts from 1 1/2 to 3 hours. When the client's exterior skin surface is cooled to these levels, the immune system is stimulated, and every organ in the body is affected positively. The biochemical processes that occur at this time consume a great quantity of energy. It is believed that this process is responsible for fat loss reported by many users.

What Is Happening To My Body During Treatment?
Skin
The outer skin is briefly 'frozen', activating increased production of collagen in deeper layers of the skin (similar to lasers treatments of the face, where very hot temperatures are used). The skin regains elasticity and becomes smoother and even-toned, significantly improving conditions such as cellulite and skin aging. Skin vessels and capillaries undergo severe vasoconstriction (to keep the core temperature from dropping), followed by vasodilation after the procedure. Toxins and other stored deposits are flushed out of the layers of the skin and blood perfusion is improved after several treatments. The anti-inflammatory properties of cryotherapy are also used to treat chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis.
Endocrine
The extreme cold exposure causes to the body to turn up its metabolic rate in order to produce heat. This effect lasts for 5-8 hours after the procedure, causing the body to 'burn' 500 - 800 Kcal over the hours following the procedure. After several procedures, the increase in metabolic rate tends to last longer between treatments. Another 'survival reaction' to the extreme temperatures is the release of endorphins (hormones) that have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and improve mood disorders. Cryotherapy has been studied for the successful treatment of medication resistant depressive disorders. Patients furthermore experience a noticeable increase in libido, lending to the use of cryotherapy for ED and other sexual disorders.
Musculoskeletal
The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of cryotherapy can drastically improve joint disorders such as rheumatoid- and osteoarthritis. Athletes are using whole body cryotherapy to recover from injuries and improve their performance.
Immune System
Cryotherapy improves the function of the immune system and decreases stress levels.
Athletic Recovery & Performance
For decades, cold therapy has been commonly used as a procedure to relieve pain symptoms, particularly in inflammation, injuries and overuse symptoms. In sports medicine, Cryotherapy has gained wider acceptance as a recovery modality from muscle injuries by significantly alleviating inflammation after strenuous exercise by inducing an anti-inflammatory effect.
Intense training, overuse and/or insufficient recovery have been known to cause muscle fatigue, injury, and immune compromise
Therefore, achieving the optimal balance between training and recovery is crucial in maximizing performance and avoiding the dreaded "plateau" of any fitness or weight loss program. Which all too often has left many frustrated and unmotivated, as It seems harder and harder to get the energy to lose those last few pounds or crush your strength goals. Cryotherapy can help blow through your plateau to achieve and accede your health and fitness endeavor.
Pre-Workout
Cryotherapy has been shown to burn 500-800 calories per session. This is optimal to help prime your body prior to your workout for increased energy, vitality, metabolic rate and fat burning. Cryotherapy before your workout, race or game can increase your performance as well as aid in a faster recovery.
Post-Workout
Inflammation is a cell and tissue response to insult or injury. Chemical signals released by damaged cells result in dilation of blood vessels, swelling, accumulation of white blood cells and warming of tissue. Cryotherapy promotes anti-inflammatory properties, which decrease soreness in a post-workout state as well as provide pain relief by constricting the blood vessels. Cryotherapy also elicits the 'fight or flight' response, which not only decreases inflammation but also affects your body's perception of symptomatic pain.
Additional Reported Benefits
Decreased muscle soreness
Psychological competitive edge
Decreased injury recovery time
Quicker recovery from workouts, practice, and games
Increased blood and lymph circulation
Boost immune system
Health & Wellness
During Cryotherapy treatment the skin vessels and capillaries undergo a period of vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels) followed by vasodilatation (dilation of blood vessels) upon finishing the session. These causes Toxins stored in the layers of the skin to be broken down and flushed away. The intense cold (-270) activates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, leaving your skin firm and tight. After several treatments clients have noticed the skin becoming smoother and more even toned with regained elasticity and improved overall "youthful" feeling. A reduction in the appearance of cellulite and an increase of the skins elasticity has also be seen in repeated sessions, which that Cryotherapy's anti-aging benefits.
Metabolic Boost
Exposure to extreme cold during Cryotherapy tricks the body into thinking it's going into hypothermia, causing it to boost its metabolic rate in order to maintain and increase heat production. This "hacking" of the metabolism causes the body to burn between 500-800 extra calories. Cryotherapy may be the powerful training partner your weight-loss program needs.
Energy & Mood
When you undergo a session of Cryotherapy the brain releases natural "feel good" endorphins to help cope with the extreme cold temperatures. These same endorphins increase energy levels and leave you with a euphoric feeling for reported up to 8 hours by clients following a session. These naturally boosted "euphoric" endorphins have been known to improve sleep and aid in the treatment of depression and other mental health ailments.
Additional Reports Benefits
Releases endorphins
Decreased fatigue, anxiety, and depression
Tighter, healthier skin
Decreased incidence of colds and flu
Improves sleep
Weight loss assistance
Relief from severe acne
Pain & Inflammation
Cryotherapy is a safe and natural pain therapy that can be customized to your needs, goals, and pain issues. Cryotherapy works for pain by eliciting the body's "fight or flight" response , which stimulates the production of endorphins, thus decreasing the body's perception of symptomatic pain. Cryotherapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other pain management techniques such as massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and physical therapy, which enhances the effectiveness and maximizes the benefits. Chronic pain can be a frustrating and debilitating condition, so put your pain on ice at Synergy.
Pain & Injury Recovery
The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of cryotherapy can drastically improve joint disorders such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Fibromyalgia is a disease that causes pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. After emerging from the chamber clients report a pleasant warm feeling throughout the whole body. All joints move more fluidly, they feel strong, and full of energy; this initial positive effect may last up to eight hours. The immediate effect of skin cooling and analgesia lasts for five minutes, but the release of endorphins can have a lasting effect, where the pains and signs of inflammation as found in blood tests remain suppressed for weeks. This type of cryotherapy is used to manage fibromyalgia, amongst other disorders. In sports medicine, Whole Body Cryotherapy has gained wider acceptance as a method to improve recovery from muscle injury.
Inflammation Management
Inflammation is a biological response of tissues and cells to injury and cellular damage, and acts as a protective attempt by the body to remove the injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process. The problem is that the receptors involved in pain are also present in inflammation; their activation causes the inflammatory reaction. These chemical signals released by damaged cells result in dilation of blood vessels, accumulation of white blood cells, warming of tissue and swelling. Cryotherapy combats this response by constricting the blood vessels, thus decreasing inflammation. Whether pain or inflammation is keeping you from your favorite activity or hobby such as sports, biking, running or gardening, or if you are simply finding yourself less active and more irritable due to chronic debilitating pain and inflammation, then Cryotherapy is your answer.
Additional Reported Benefits
