Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a science based on the philosophy that good health depends, in part, on a normally functioning nervous system (especially the brain, spinal cord, & spinal nerves linking all parts of the body). "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic is the science of locating the nerve or interference that is affecting the body's ability to adapt to its environment. This is achieved through gentle, safe, precise chiropractic adjustments and not through the use of harsh drugs.
What conditions benefit from Chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is most used to relieve low back pain; however, several studies have documented the effectiveness of Chiropractic for a variety of conditions. These include, but are not limited to: migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, high blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Does Chiropractic hurt?
No. Under normal circumstances, adjustments do not hurt. Some patients may experience a minor amount of discomfort during an adjustment which lasts only moments.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic adjustments, or manipulations, are extremely safe. Chiropractics conservative approach avoids invasive procedures and/ or potentially dangerous drugs. In fact newborns as well as seniors can benefit from this gentle treatment.
What type of education do Chiropractors receive?
Chiropractic education requires anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, radiography, spinal adjusting techniques, and other related subjects with an emphases on neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. To graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, each candidate must pass their National Board of examinations, along with the licensing boards in their own state. A Chiropractor's education never ends. The state of Illinois requires 50 hours per year of post graduate education for license renewal.
Are all patient adjustments the same?
No. Each patients spinal problem and course of treatments is unique. Age, occupation and health goals will influence your course of treatment. Every patient presents with their own spinal pattern, and there for will be treated and adjusted accordingly. No. Each patients spinal problem and course of treatments is unique. What To Expect
The first two visits will lay the foundation for the care that you will receive at Stiles Chiropractic offices. Please allow 30 minutes for each of these visits.
First Visit
On your first day you will start with a consultation with the doctor. During your consultation she will ask you about your chief complaint, along with a thorough health history, other care you have received, (chiropractic, physical therapy, or medical), your occupation, and other questions that may be needed to determine the nature of your condition, and the best course of treatment for that condition. Next she will conduct a thorough examination including orthopedic, neurological, physical, and chiropractic tests, with a specific focus on investigating the cause of your problem. Often times simply looking at your problem from a different perspective is enough to open new doors to understanding your body and to a faster recovery and true healing. The doctor will also answer any questions you have in regards to your health and evaluate weather or not you are a good candidate for chiropractic care. If we feel we can help you, and you have selected to continue, any follow up exams and any necessary x-rays will be performed. Before you leave, the doctor will give you some initial suggestions for home care. If we feel that we will be unable to help you, we will refer you to another doctor in Chicago.
Second Visit
On your second visit we review our initial findings, and re-evaluate your current condition, answering any questions you may have. Next we will explain and demonstrate the difference between how a normal and abnormal spine and nervous system function. We will relate this information to your condition while reviewing your x-ray findings. We will then describe our treatment recommendations. This is when you will receive your first chiropractic adjustment after which we will schedule any follow up appointments that the doctor recommends.
