Tennis
10 & Under Tennis
Sport Fit Bowie teaches most of the 10 & under kids using the USTA endorsed 10 & Under (previously QuickStart) program. Here are a couple videos illustrating why we do. We hope that you'll agree that even advanced level kids benefit by using the reduced court sizes to learn more advanced skills than they can on a full-sized court.
Perfect Swing Futures
Pre-Elite junior tennis programs were designed to give those children whose skills are developing more quickly than the others and they now can rally, even if we are in a 10 & under reduced court size situation. This allows us to prepare the children on a track toward the Perfect Swing programs which require more focus, discipline, commitment and ability to work hard physically. Tennis Programs starting end of Feb 2018.
Perfect Swing Training
Sport Fit Bowie's Perfect Swing Training program for advanced juniors helps teach your children how to train, push their games to the next level and enjoy their time working hard. Currently, the programs run most days of the week depending upon the players level. Vouchers are available for multi-day discounts online or at the front desk. Please ask if you are in the situation of participating in the programs more than one time per week (heavily recommended to make the type of progress we are striving for in the Elite Program). There is a 10% discount for 2 days a week and a 20% discount for 3 days a week. Tennis Programs starting end of Feb 2018.

Are you interested in hosting your child's next birthday with Tennis at Sport Fit? We offer custom tennis birthday party packages just for You! Come on out and have some fun with our Tennis Pros and your birthday kid!

Clinics / Drills
Clinics
Clinics are group instruction. We have clinics to introduce new players to tennis, enhance your technical skills or your strategy. Groups motivate each other and grow together while developing skills such as stroke development or doubles.
Tennis Drills
Tennis Drills distinguish themselves by insuring that you get to hit lots of balls and practice your shots without as much instruction. These programs include Cardio Tennis, Total Workout (also referred to as a Cardio Workout sometimes), Advanced Adult Drills and also the hybrid classes referred to as Drill & Play. The Drill & Play classes will review some stroke technique when the class is struggling to achieve a new Doubles Strategy, but otherwise the main focus is on what skills and strategy are important to improving your match play. A portion of the class is set aside to play doubles and work on implementing the skills worked on during the drill portion of the class.

Tennis Testimonials
Rosanna
"I've been a Sport Fit Member 10 years this month! What I love about Sport Fit is that it is the friendliest place with the most helpful trainers. I love their group fitness classes, the tennis programs, and I love the pool. I learned to swim here, I learned to play tennis here, I learned how to do a plank, a squat, a push up, and everything else you can imagine! It's just a great place to be".
Doubles Drill & Play
I have had the great pleasure of attending clinics and having private lessons with Marjorie Collins over the last 4 years. She is a wonderful instructor who has helped me improve my tennis game in all areas. Her clinics are a combination of stoke development and doubles strategy and she is great at focusing in on everyone's different areas they need to work on. Marjorie is always smiling and positive and usually has you focus on one thing at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. The classes are well organized and she keeps you hitting lots of balls even in a large class? Majorie is able to explain and break down strokes and her private lessons are a great place to work on your weaknesses. The fact that I drive one hour and a half once a week in the winter to attend Marjorie's Monday advance clinic is testimonial to her great teaching skills! Marisa Mansueti (red shirt, far left top photo). "Marjorie is an outstanding instructor who makes tennis drills into some of the most enjoyable time of the day for kids and adults of all levels alike. The most amazing thing about playing with Marjorie is her genuine delight in the progress her students make – I always come off the court with sharpened skills and renewed confidence. Nobody can make you feel like you are going to Wimbledon like Marjorie does!" I don't think I can adequately express how much love playing with you. But I hope this gets at least some of my excitement across. – Tatiana (top photo right side grey tank top). I picked up a racquet for the first time four years ago for Sport Fit's Free Intro to Tennis classes and have not looked back. I love the clinics, leagues, and court time at the club. The pros are very supportive of new players. The tennis community at Sport Fit Bowie is amazing and I've enjoyed making new friends through the sport. – Gigi (lower photo center pink shirt). My instructor, Marjorie Collins, has taken me from zero skill level to playing in leagues. She is patient, persistent and passionate. In group lessons she pays full attention to each player. I am in awe of her ability to teach all ages and levels. This combination of qualities makes Marjorie an exceptional instructor and I feel fortunate to be her student. Rosanna O. Kiersten
Another Perfect Swing tennis program testimonial. We're very proud of the players and encourage them to learn how to speak for themselves and handle the press as they develop. Knowing how to compete well and how to handle both winning and losing is an important element of any program.
Teresa
I decided I was going to learn to play tennis. My kids were gone, I needed exercise and something to occupy my newly available time and tennis seemed like a good choice. To start, I signed up for an introductory beginner class at Bowie Sport Fit. That's how I met Phillip Jorgensen. Phillip is a young, energetic and knowledgeable tennis instructor. He impressed me immediately and immensely both with his knowledge and his character. Since I wanted to get better, I signed up for a few private lessons with Phillip. He is phenomenal! He worked with my physical abilities in a way that made me feel comfortable. More importantly, he doesn't just tell me what I am doing wrong; he tells me how to fix it. For instance, my serve was abominable. Phillip tweaked everything including my toss, stance, swing and swing tempo and my follow through and in the end, my serve greatly improved. He also tweaks my groundstrokes by explaining how to adjust my back swing, grip, swing motion, foot work etc. It's one thing to say that the "racquet face was open" and entirely another to be able to tell me how to fix it. I have gone from barely being able to hit the ball to playing in a beginner's league with some success! Another thing Phillip does, which I find truly fun, is he says things in an entertaining way. He says things like "dance on the court" (and then does a little dance)-this is his way to gently remind me that I need to move my feet if I want to get to the ball or also tells me to "trust my swing" which is his way of reminding me to play like I practice. At the same time he's very professional. He always works with my schedule, is on time and runs efficient lessons. I attend his clinics on Tuesday as well as Sunday and I always learn something new. The bottom line is that Phillip has quickly helped me improve my skills in a fun and effective way-and his lessons give me a workout that's equal to my capabilities. If you are looking for a fun tennis experience or just need to tweak something in your game, give Phillip Jorgensen a try!
Gary Anderson
I have thoroughly enjoyed the tennis facility at Sport Fit over the many years I have played tennis at their facility. The hard courts and clay courts have been maintained to the highest level making them enjoyable to play on. I would recommend Sport Fit highly to anyone who has an interest in tennis or who enjoys exercising their body.
Tim Scoville
I'm a life-long tennis player. Since retiring in 2013, I've been fortunate enough to find an active group of SportFit tennis players that plays every day, on the clay all summer and indoors all winter or in bad weather. How can you beat that? The facilities are great and the staff super friendly and helpful. I love this place!
Gilbert Crampton
I am a senior citizen and have been a member for more than 2 years. My participation in Cardio Tennis has resulted in improvement in my health, and tennis game. The Wednesday and Friday cardio sessions are lead by Kevin McClure an excellent and entertaining instructor who keeps things moving. I have also enjoyed other tennis drills with Marjorie, and Amie. Another plus for tennis players is the availability of a ball machine to practice on. The Bowie facility offers a lot including a courteous and efficient front desk staff to assist you in your activities.

I joined SportFit in January of 20012. At that time, I needed a cane to walk and experienced significant pain due to a year-old unresolved foot injury. The only classes I could do at that time were the aqua-arthritis classes in the therapy tank. Over the next two years, those classes strengthened my leg enough to get rid of the cane. The support of Lanie and the others in the class supported me through breast cancer treatment and a broken wrist. Today, I still take the aqua-arthritis class and have more flexibility and balance than I had ten years ago. I have also added resist-a-ball, weight circuit and corrective muscle conditioning to my schedule. I am so grateful to SportFit and the instructors, who first accommodated, then helped me overcome my weaknesses. Although the foot issue remains and will never resolve, I experience much less pain because of the increased strength in my body. I highly recommend Sport Fit classes to anyone looking to have a stronger, healthier body.

I would like to share my experience as a member of how Sport Fit has been beneficial for me in all aspects of my life: physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. I can remember how heavy my legs felt after I completed my very first class of Aqua Arthritis on January 2, 2017 and I knew right then and there that aqua therapy was what I needed in order to improve my recovery from major back surgery. I have made more progress doing aqua therapy at Sport Fit in just four months, going four times a week, than I did all of last year when I was limited to walking, mat exercises and some limited pool activity. I now feel like there is hope that I will become stronger in hope to be able to walk without my cane. Even though I probably have a ways to go to meet my goal, it's very exciting to see that I'm making progress each day towards my goal. I have Sport Fit to thank for my encouragement and improvement. I have really enjoyed taking group classes (eg. Aqua Arthritis, Total Water, Deep Water and Water Weights) with knowledgable, qualified instructors leading the way. I have not only benefitted from the well rounded instruction but it has been a real pleasure to reach out and meet new people who have been thru what I'm going thru in my recovery. The people I've met in the classes are wonderful and very helpful and are a real source of information and inspiration. I could not be happier with my decision to join Sport Fit, as it has really enhanced my once gloomy outlook on my recovery. The benefit of going to Sport Fit is that I start my aqua workouts early in the day and I'm usually finished by 11:00 am, thus, I have completed a majority of my exercise routine before lunch. Quite honestly, the best I feel all day is when I get into my car after my workout knowing that I did my best to help myself in my recovery. I also still have time later in the day to continue doing my daily walk and I have even started to do fifteen minutes a day on the Elliptical Edge. For this, I am truly grateful to be a member of Sport Fit.

I joined Sport Fit last year and was completely new to fitness. I didn't know where to start, I knew I wanted to get "healthier" and "thinner" but had no idea how. Thanks to Eddie and her sculpt n abs class I got into strength training and was able to lose 20 lbs. Eddie makes each of her classes unique, engaging, and creative. She takes the time to teach correct form and pays attention to the class to keep everyone safe and motivated. She takes an interest in her participants, makes everyone feel welcome, and is always willing to give fitness advice or listen to small talk. Without her coaching and influence, I wouldn't be where I am today and my membership fee would have just gone down the drain. Thank you Eddie!

This note expresses my sentiment about my Water Aerobics Class. This class taught by Eddie is monumental! She has compassion for us old gals as well as the young. She takes her time to explain each movement and what muscle will be strengthened by the exercise. We go through many routines without missing a beat and it works for the body. We dance to the music in the pool and she is unstructured with the music. If someone wants to change the music; she changes immediately and keeps it moving. We have become as a family as Eddie as the mother instructing, and caring for us as no other would; to help us feel better each night, we come here. I sincerely thank Sport Fit for service to us. Anonymous Aqua Arthritis Participant.
LaVonne
I began doing water aerobics for exercise when it was first introduced at the Laurel spa in June 1975. I have continued doing this exercise three times a week ever since. When the Laurel Sport Fit closed in May 2013, I transferred to the Bowie Sport Fit. A few years ago my doctor asked if I exercised regularly and when I told him what I was doing; he said that is probably why I have such a healthy heart and told me to keep on doing it. I am now beginning my 80th year of life.

It was suggested to me two years ago that I start participating in the aqua arthritis class as I was about to have hip replacement surgery. That was the best advice. I have continued since then with the classes for several reasons. The exercise have certainly helped with recuperation and now prevention of further deterioration, but more importantly, the instructor, Lanie, and long time members of the class want to make sure one is doing the exercises correctly and do make everyone feel so welcome. The class is so varied from day to day while moving all parts of the body and the time goes by. One feels so much better after leaving the class.
Lisa
My name is Lisa Wood and I joined Sport Fit in March, 2016 because I have a very rare condition which has caused spinal cord damage to my thoracic spine. This condition causes me to have episodes where I am in a wheelchair at times. Since joining Sport Fit for the Aquatic classes, I have more mobility, less pain, and less episodes. Lanie's Aquatic classes have given me a better quality of life and I am able to go to more family functions than I was able to prior to joining Sport Fit. I am so thankful that I joined and I have recommended Sport Fit to all of my friends and family!
Janelle
I never thought I would like water aerobics because I do not swim and have a fear of the water. Water aerobics has taught me differently. I have been in the class for almost 2 years and love it! Rose, the instructor, is a wonderful leader, fun, friendly and helpful. She shows different methods for moves for those who have trouble. Rose plays a lot of "oldies" music which we all love and causes some of us to "dance in the water". The members of the class have become a "family" and we look out for each other and a lot of us keep in contact outside of the class because we have become good friends. The class also has periodic "parties" where we either have a pot luck or meet at a restaurant outside of class to have fun together and socialize (which is hard while doing aerobics in the water). I have an artificial knee and my doctor recommended water aerobics because I cannot run or jog. Water aerobics has helped me maintain my weight and exercise but still "run" in the water and I actually work up a sweat. There is no pressure at all on my knees and no pain. I would highly recommend water aerobics for a great exercise class, good friendships and fun times!
Brenna
My husband and two kids joined Sport Fit two months ago. I have been a member of most gyms in the area and they do not compare to Sport Fit. The facility is very kid friendly, (the toddler classes and babysitting are GREAT) which makes it easier for a stay at home mom like me! The staff is extremely friendly and the group exercise classes are challenging and such great workouts. I have not done one that I was disappointed with. We are looking forward to enjoying the summer at the pool and to begin swim lessons with my two year old. I am so thankful that we joined Sport Fit, as it has made my days better! - Brenna Wojno.

Beauty & Health
Every person makes decisions about where to invest their money for beauty and health. The table below gives an accounting of some decision alternatives for healthier beauty alternatives.
The Benefits of a Facial in Winter
Winter is traditionally a time when we hunker down, stay in, and snuggle up in something comfy. Feet stay resolutely hidden inside boots and slippers, and there are fewer opportunities to flash those perfectly waxed legs. However, there are many benefits to slipping down to your beauty salon for a winter facial treatment which will not only leave you looking beautiful, but feeling great too. Despite the lack of sunshine, our skin receives no reprieve from the harsh UV rays over winter. This coupled with the drying effect of wind and the lack of humidity in the air can leave your skin irritated, scaly and sallow. A facial works to counteract these effects in three ways: by improving circulation, by providing deep cleansing, and by restoring moisture and hydration. At the outset, it is important for your beauty therapist to do a thorough skin analysis and consultation. Our skin changes as we age, as hormones fluctuate, and as the seasons change. It is important that the right products are selected in order to ensure a beautiful result. The reason we want to improve circulation to our face is to stimulate our own skin's natural renewal, leaving a complexion which looks younger and feels smoother. This stimulation can take the form of exfoliants, masks or peels which removes the dead skin cells to reveal the new skin cells underneath. Exfoliation also allows for ingredients to absorb more deeply into your skin, maximising the benefits. Winter is also the perfect time to get into some fabulous peel treatments. From peels that you have done in your lunch hour through to treatment mask peels that are left on for 6 or more hours these all benefit different levels to give your skin deep exfoliation and stimulation that minimalizes fine lines, helps with pigmentation and smooth tone texture and can ultimately slow down the aging process Deep cleansing is important for all skin types, but particularly those prone to blemishes. A facial includes cleansing which helps unblock your pores and promotes healing and restoration. Our daily cleansing regime might be adequate for makeup and grime removal but for skin that is truly clean, a facial gives an unsurpassed result. Finally, the skin is nourished with a moisturizer matched to your skin type. In general, in winter we require more moisture and protection, which means we need to remain vigilant with our sun protection, in all four seasons. Of course, forgetting about all the technical jargon for a moment and remember about one of the ultimate health benefits of a facial, and that is the deep relaxation, stress relief and inner warmth which come from taking time out to nurture ourselves.
Facials for people undergoing Chemotherapy
A facial focused on restoring hydration to fragile skin can also be a relief for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Facials are an effective way of relaxing and moisturizing stressed out skin. During a specialized facial for chemotherapy patients, your skin will be treated with gentle products applied with careful attention and hygiene. We customize our treatments to fit unique circumstances, forgoing pore extractions (typically included), heavily scented Having yourself treated with facial helps boost the circulation of blood in the skin products, and other aspects that may be uncomfortable depending on your needs. With this customized facial, dull skin is balanced and brightened, restoring a lustrous complexion.
Having yourself treated with facial helps boost the circulation of blood in the skin
Getting a facial steam could help increase the circulation of blood in the face. When combined with the cleansing of clogged pores and the removal and extraction of whiteheads and blackheads, the skin on the face would feel more radiant and it could also improve evening out your skin tone.
Get a Facial
Get a Facial – Let Bernie give you the advice and treatment. Let the esthetician recommend which facial is best for you.
Handling Your Face
Do: Wash your Face every Evening: Take off the day! It benefits the skin on the cellular level and it helps the skin to rest and to restore itself. If your skin needs some extra restoration, a nice night cream or oil that is paraffin free is very good for the skin. Remember, it is always best to consult with a licensed skin esthetician to get the best skin products for your needs. Don't: Don't Touch Your Face – This is easier said than done especially if you have a blemish that you can't help but pester. The more that you touch your face the more problems that will arise. When you touch your face with unclean hands you are pulling bacteria from your dirty hands to your face and causing more fuel for the blemishes. Keep your hands off your face at all costs and do not pick or pop any blemishes! Again with the easier said than done but doing so will result in scaring- leaving you with bigger problems than a measly ol' pimple.
Protection vs Enhancement
DO: Use SPF Protection – SPF should be worn daily on all skin types – even in the winter! SPF will fight the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays on your skin. You can mix an SPF with your daily moisturizer or find a moisturizer with SPF already in it. Try your best to stay out of the sun from 11:00am-2:00pm when the sun is at it's peak. Don't: Be Careful with Skin Care Combinations- Some combinations do not play nice with one another. Retinol and alpha hydroxy acids, like glycol and lactic acids. is a recipe for redness and irritation. Additionally, be careful with mixing Citric acid with other products. Layering it can cause irritation. There are many bad combinations so be sure to check with Bee to see which product combinations are safe and effective for your skin.
Eat Healthy
Eat Healthy – Just as our mothers told us growing up "You need to eat your veggies!" – If you're anything like me and can't sit down and eat a plain and dry salad try an alternative like juicing. Natural juices are full of vitamins, anti-oxidants and nutrients that help increase blood flow as well as total cell turnover and regeneration making for the healthiest complexion!
Using Products
Do: Moisturize – Moisturizer is one of the most important beauty products out there. Keeping your skin moisturized will combat multiple skin concerns down the road. Using an overnight moisturizer is a great way to stay consistently hydrated. Skin cell regeneration works faster overnight so using a nighttime moisturizer before bed is sure to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. In addition, it's important that every woman use an eye cream. Don't: Over Do It – Don't go overboard with your skin care routine. Keeping it as simple as possible will ensure a healthy complexion. Testing out too many serums and constantly changing your skin care routine will irritate your skin. Find one routine that works best for your skin type and stick to that for as long as possible! A professional esthetician like Bee will help you find the right products for your skin. This will help to keep your skin balanced and happy.
Hydration Dos & Don'ts
Do: Drink Plenty of Water – Water is essential for a healthy complexion. H2O flushes out the toxins in your body and keeps the rest of your insides on track and working properly. Your skin is the very last organ to receive nutrients and nourishment from water. Meaning that in stressful situations and during these summer months especially, you have to drink even more water than you normally would! How much water should you be drinking? Take your body weight and divide it in half- that is how many ounces of water you should be taking in daily. Don't: Don't Drink Too Much Coffee –One cup of coffee a day can be beneficial but too many Starbucks trips in one week (or one day for some of us) can be dehydrating on the skin. Our skin needs all the water and hydration it can get, especially in the heat of summer so try to limit your coffee intake as much as physically possible for your lifestyle.
