Swedish Massage Therapy
This is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States.
It is also known as Swedish massage or simply massage therapy.
Massage therapists use long smooth strokes,
kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
Swedish massage therapy can be very gentle and relaxing.
If you've never had massage before, this is a good one to try first.
Deep Tissue Massage/Neuromuscular Massage Therapy
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.
The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle.
Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles,
repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury.
Neuromuscular therapy consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm.
The massage therapy pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow. Once applied to a muscle spasm, the pressure should not vary for ten to thirty seconds.
Following a deep tissue or neuromuscular therapy massage,
any soreness that presents itself should fade after twenty-four to thirty-six hours. The muscles that were tight should remain noticeably more relaxed for four to fourteen days, depending on stress, activity level, and severity of pain prior to beginning massage therapy.
Hot Stone Massage
Heated,
smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body.
The massage therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them.
The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.
Pregnancy Massage
Also called prenatal massage,
pregnancy massage is becoming increasingly popular with expectant mothers. Massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage know the proper way to position and support the woman's body during the massage, and how to modify techniques.
Pregnancy massage is used to reduce stress,
decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression. The massage is customized to a woman's individual needs.
Back Massage
Some massage clinics and spas offer 30-minute back massages.
If a back massage is not expressly advertised, you can also book a 30- or 40-minute massage and ask that the massage therapist to focus on your back.
Lymphatic Massage Therapy
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a gentle,
light-touch, noninvasive technique that offers qualified therapists a natural complement to their existing health care protocols. Within the context of breast care, LDT can help alleviate numerous conditions related to pregnancy, including engorgement, sore nipples (transient, chronic), plugged ducts, wounds, fissures, ulcerations, bruises and dermatitis (eczema). This therapy also can provide relief from chronic inflammation and pre- and post-surgical applications, and can be used for cosmetic applications, such as mastoptosis, scars and traumas.
Best results are obtained with accurate knowledge of the specific anatomy,
physiology and related hand techniques involved so the practitioner can attune to the precise rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow.
Goal with massage therapy is to help relieve pain caused by stress or injury so that my clients are able to lead happier, more productive lives. If the body is happy, then I truly believe that the mind and spirit are happy as well!
