Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to eliminate pain, increase range of motion, and rebalance the entire body. It does this by using massage techniques to stretch, or 'melt', the fascia and release the bonds that exist between the fascia, muscles and bones. Fascia is the connective tissue that connects and covers all muscles, organs, and skeletal structures of the body. Direct myofascial release has been known as trigger point work and is also sometimes known as deep tissue work, which is not actually as hard as it may sound. Profound change can happen with the right application of touch.
Swedish Massage is a very relaxing and therapeutic style of bodywork. It combines oils or lotion with an array of strokes such as rolling, kneading, and percussion to help the body improve its circulation. The benefits of this type of bodywork are wide-ranging and include relief from aches and pains, decreased stress levels in the body, enhanced mental clarity, improved appearance, and greater flexibility.
I have certification as a Reiki Master. Reiki is a Japanese form of energy work that cleanses and balances the energy system in the body. As a result, the body's natural self-healing mechanisms strengthen, helping to establish optimum health. During a session, I work directly with your energy field to remove blockages, detoxify your system, and restore your vital life force energy. Reiki is done by a gentle laying on of hands to conduct the necessary energy force between us. The benefits of Reiki range from alleviating pain, strengthening the immune system to releasing habitual mental/emotional stress. Reiki energy is soothing and gentle and brings deep rest.
I have certification in Medical Massage from the Swedish Institute in New York City. A medical massage session addresses a specific area of the body only, though I work to integrate the treatment with the rest of the body as well. The massage incorporates many modalities, from Swedish to myofascial release. The anatomy of an area is explored with a view to relieving pain, increasing bloodflow/lymph return, and increasing normal range of motion to the related joints. Some conditions require more than one week of sessions. Conditions that may be helped include: pain and stiffness resulting from whiplash, headaches, thoracic outlet syndrome, sciatica and more.
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage therapy. The word Shiatsu comes from two Japanese words - "shi" (finger) and "atsu" (pressure). In addition to the direct stimulation of pressure points along the energy pathways of your body, gentle stretching techniques are applied over a wider area of the body to integrate the point work and encourage the flow of Chi (energy) throughout the body. Shiatsu is a meditative healing art that honors the body, mind and spirit. While traditional Shiatsu is done on the floor, I work on a table. Please wear loose clothing of natural fiber, if possible.
Energy work is based on the belief that everyone has a "life force", and that the body needs to sustain its balance for optimum health. Anytime you experience emotional or physical illness, it indicates that your life force has simply become unbalanced. I work directly with your energy field to restore balance and flow to your entire system. And once your energy field has been restored to full health, your body will follow. There are many systems under the heading of 'energy work'. Shiatsu, Acupressure and Reiki are three of which I have specific training in.
Acupressure is based on one of the most ancient principles of healing - that simply touching a specific point on the body will release stress and improve health in the body. In an acupressure session, I apply pressure directly to these "points" on your body, which relieves your muscle tension and improves your circulation. These points are on the same energy channels that are used in Shiatsu. Pressure will be firm or very light, depending on what is needed at the time. This simple and powerful technique has been shown to very effective in treating headaches, backaches, and even insomnia. It can also help to break up pain patterns, when heavier pressure cannot be tolerated.
