For over 150 years the Vietti estate, seated at the peak of the highest point within Castiglione Falletto, has overlooked the medieval castle for which the surrounding village is named. The greater region of Barolo is world renowned for its rich history, rolling hillsides, and one of the worlds most prestigious grapes, Nebbiolo, a thin-skinned and highly aromatic grape that produces wines that may look light but are packed with power in every sip. The fruit is sourced from a selection of several different sites within the region that are individually pressed, vinified, aged, and seamlessly woven together, creating a wine that will draw you back sip after sip after sip.
From northern facing vineyards in the heart of Barbaresco, the Giordano family has crafted a vintage sparkling wine made to the exacting standards of Champagne, and utilizing the most noble red grape of Piedmont, Nebbiolo. The family estate was founded in 1930 by Giuseppe Giordano and is now in the hands of 4th generation Giordanos Laura and her son Matteo. The cooler northern facing vineyards allow the grapes to mature more slowly and more completely while maintaining freshness, and the resulting wine is refreshingly dry in style and sure to delight.

$93.00
From serving wine in his family restaurant to working side by side with the great estate of Marcarini, Elvio Cogno has become one of the most revered names in Piemonte. Elvio purchased a magnificent and historic 18th-century farmhouse at the summit of Bricco Ravera, in the heart of Novello. By 1990, Elvio rebuilt the manor, created his self-named winery, and turned the old granaries into the wine cellars used today. He committed the following 20 years to continuing the winemaking customs his father and grandpa taught him. His "Anas-Cëtta" exhibits fresh grapefruit, cedar, and ginger aromas tied into intense notes of white flowers, Mediterranean herbs, and delicate mineral hints.

In the Collio region of Friuli Venezia Giulia come some of Italy's finest white wines. The La Ponca estate, found in the hamlet of Scriò, is poised to become one of the great producers of the region. Luscious forests in the foothills of the Alps surround their terraced vineyards that abut the Slovenian border a mere twenty miles from the Mediterranean Sea. The winery takes its name from the "ponca" soil type it sits upon. This soil consists of layers of sandstone alternating with marl and silt that give their wines a distinctive minerality. La Ponca produces a wide range of varietals indigenous to the region with a focus on the famed Friulano. The Friulano grape is typically poured in trattorias throughout Friuli as an aperitif served with prosciutto and cicchetti. La Ponca's expression is a different story that lends notes of flint, pear, and apricots, with a scent of wildflowers and mint in the distance. Where this wine truly shines is its signature textural mouthfeel begging for another sip.

The island of Ischia, the largest of the Phlegrean Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is about 20 mi. offshore from Naples. It is roughly 6 miles east to west and 4 miles north to south, entirely mountainous, and is famous for its thermal gardens created by its volcanic activity. Antonio Mazzella crafts this singular wine from what he describes as vertical vineyards" on the steep hills mere feet from where the land meets the sea. Brimming forth with sun-kissed freshness and radiant texture, not many wines can convey a "sense of place" quite like this one, just try to not be swept away to an island paradise after one sip.

Featured Dolcetto d'Alba
Luigi Giordano, 2022
$68.00
The Giordano family has been producing wine in the village of Barbaresco for nearly 100 years. They are known for the critically acclaimed expressions of Nebbiolo, with vineyards that abut the likes of Angelo Gaja and Bruno Giacosa. Though their Nebbiolos' are sought after, one of their true gems is their Dolcetto, the "little sweet one." While its name can be misleading because Dolcetto is decidedly dry, this wine shines with dark, rich fruit and a soft, earthy finish. We recommend drinking it like the Piedmontese would: as an opening act with antipasti while waiting for a fine Barolo or Barbaresco to breathe or simply passed around the table during casual everyday family meals.

Lessona, Sperino, 2017
$184.00
Paolo De Marchi may be one of the most important people in Italian wine after bringing the famed Isole e Olena estate in Tuscany to wine royalty. He and his son have now transitioned all their focus back to their original family cellars in a 200-year-old castle in Lessona. Paolo grew up here and is now paying his respect to the land that shaped him. Their vineyards are in the historic district of Ori (meaning 'gold' in Italian), characterized by its bright yellow, deep marine sands. The Nebbiolo (locally known as "Spanna") that grows here takes a different form than the expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. Expect lifted aromas of crunchy red berries and spicy rose with precision like minerality that begs for truffle risotto... hint hint

Marcarini, 2019
$154.00
Six generations deep in the Piedmontese wine region of Barolo, the Marcarini family rose to prominence through the work of the father-daughter duo of Giuseppe and Anna Marcarini in the 1960s. After Giuseppe's death in the early 1980s, Anna expanded the viticultural zone of the estate within the Brunate and La Serra vineyards. Both vineyard sites lie within the greater MGA of La Morra which historically emphasizes the perfume and aromatics of the Barolo grape Nebbiolo. Famous for its structure and power, well-made Barolo wines require winemakers to show off the elegance and perfume behind the grape's power. Built to last, yes, but we encourage you to enjoy this wine in its infancy and savor the budding aromas, textures, and flavors Marcarini has to offer

"Le Menzioni" del Barolo
Featured "Le Menzioni" del Barolo
Bricco Boschis, Roccheviberti, 2019
$252.00
In 2010 the Barolo region was officially demarcated and recognized for its 181 "Menzioni" , more commonly referred to as "Cru". These designations celebrate the soulfully expressive characteristics of each site's diverse soils, varying altitudes, and unique grape growing typicity. Outside of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, there is perhaps no other region that is studied and dissected in greater detail than the zone of Barolo. The "Bussia" Cru is on the northern-most border of Monforte d' Alba and enjoys warm sunlight juxtaposed against cool hilltop breezes eliciting a beautifully balanced wine of elegance and power.

Riserva, Produttori del Barbaresco, "Don Fiorino", 2016
Angelo Gaja is the man credited for bringing the small commune of Barbaresco out of obscurity. His influence has changed the way the world views Italian wine to this day. A master of Nebbiolo--the austere, tannic grape once considered only quaffable after decades of bottle age. Angelo saw its potential as a world class wine. Despite pushback from his peers, he employed new (and what most considered outlandish) practices both in the vineyard and the winery to promote freshness and elegance in his wine.

Chianti
Featured Chianti Classico
Cigliano di Sopra, 2021
$124.00
Hailing from the village of San Casciano in the heart of Chianti (the very same as the famed Antinori "Tignanello" bottling), it's safe to say these hills are capable of world-class Sangiovese. It only helps that the husband and wife team behind Cigliano di Sopra pay such careful attention to their wine that their third family dog's name is Alice III. The way they make their Chianti—with whole-berry fermentation and neutral oak aging—allows the terroir of this small village to shine. This is not your average Chianti Classico.

Brunello di Montalcino
Featured Brunello di Montalcino
Cerbaia, 2018
$154.00
In recent years, top Brunello di Montalcino producers have sought high-altitude vineyards to capture Sangiovese's typicity in warmer vintages purposefully preserving its varietal finesse. Cerbaia is fortunate to possess a coveted plot in the famed vineyard of Montosoli, where they harness the sun's rays for a formidable and refined wine with fresh acidity – a rare achievement today. Cerbaia's Brunello embodies traditional flavors of sour black cherry, crunchy red plum, saddle leather, and tilled earth. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the region of Montalcino can provide.

Featured Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Franco Pacenti, 2015
$289.00
Brunello di Montalcino has risen to be the premier interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese. At the Riserva level, it ranks among some of the highest aging requirements of any other table wine in the world. By law, it may not be released until the 6th year following harvest, and is mandated to mature in oak for a minimum of two years. Full in body, a Riserva designated Brunello expresses all the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal with an emphasis on black cherry, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the hill of Montalcino can provide.
Originally designed by Michaelangelo in the 16th century, the Collazzi estate has been the realm of the Marchi family since 1933. The estate looks over the historic city of Florence with the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore sparkling in the distance. While wine may be at the forefront of this estate, they also produce a limited amount of organic honey from bees bred on the estate. Buzzing with aromatics and juicy texture, this "Super Tuscan" is a true embodiment of Bordelais varietals from the foothills of the Tuscan coast.

Featured Other Super Tuscan
Cortona, Stefano Amerighi, 2021
$142.00
Many classic varietals come to mind when considering Tuscany, but Syrah is typically not one of them. However, since the late-18th century, Syrah has called the region of Cortona home. This area of Italy shares the same terroir as Syrah's true beginnings, the Northern Rhone of France. One producer leading the charge today is Sergio Amerighi, and by leading it, he is the head of the DOC. Once an outcast of Cortona, Sergio Amerighi is now the region's pioneer, producing some of Syrah's most ethereal and striking expressions. Sergio's nearly two-decade-old vines lie in the cru of Poggiobello di Farneta, with southwest-facing slopes at a high elevation, which provide an almost perfect home for his grapes. His Syrah is not overly heavy-handed but undeniably Tuscan, focusing on summer red fruits, violet, and clove with anise, black olive, and charcuterie in the background. He picks all his grapes by hand and trods them by foot to achieve minimal intervention and a more classical approach. Sergio farms biodynamically and utilizes polyculture farming for his estate, using grains, olives, fruit trees, geese, hens, and the native Chianina cattle alla Bistecca Fiorentina. Hint hint: a perfect pairing.

Featured Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Zenato, 2018
$198.00
Just outside of Verona lie the hills of Valpolicella which is home to one of Italy's greatest wines: Amarone. Composed of a blend of special, native varietals, Amarone's claim to fame is a result of its unique production method, appassimento. Directly translating to "withering" or "fading", appassimento refers to a special grape-drying process that concentrates the sugars and flavors in grapes destined for Amarone. Full-bodied and powerful with ripe fruit, these wines deliver a unique expression of Northern Italian wine.

Veneto Reds of Quintarelli & Dal Forno
Featured Producers
Quintarelli vs. Dal Forno
DRC vs. Leroy...Lafite vs. Latour...Conterno vs. Gaja... the wine geek's equivalent to a political debate (notwithstanding a little BS) in a quest for the single greatest expression of a particular wine. In Valpolicella, two producers indisputably reign at the top of the quality pyramid: Quintarelli and Dal Forno. Both producers commit maniacal attention to fruit selection, sorting down to the individual berry if necessary to achieve the best extraction of flavor possible. Quintarelli's genius in the cellar is carried out through more traditional methods of èlevage, while Dal Forno boasts one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the world. Preference in the resulting wines can be polarizing depending on the taster, but the quality of both is unquestionable. Where Quintarelli masterfully draws elegance and otherworldly aromas out of his Amarones, Dal Forno excels in achieving depths of concentration winemakers in Napa only dream about.
In the Sud-Alta Valle of Campania, just a stone's throw outside the famed region of Taurasi, lies the estate of Luigi Tecce in Campi Taurasini. The property dates back four generations and has everything from olive trees, goats, sheep, and most importantly vines. In 1997, Luigi returned home to take over the family estate after a stint in Rome working in parliament. With no formal wine growing or making experience, Luigi says he, "works more by feel, say 70%, and the remaining 30% empirically." That being said, Luigi's work is a near-solo act with no enologist or agronomist. Luigi has deep ties to his land, from spending time with his grandparents to hiding in a large chestnut bottle he uses for fermentation today. Luigi views Satyricon as a mashup of Greco-Roman and Medieval traditions fit for a table of boisterous celebration and cheer. Composed of the native grape Aglianico, the fruit for this wine is sourced from a single vineyard cru lying high on the slopes of Campi Taurasini over soils composed of sand, limestone, and Vesuvius' pumice. Expect aromatics of black fruit, sage, and earth as you raise your glass and indulge in southern Italy's most noble varietal.

Famed winemaker Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo has been instrumental in the recent surge in popularity of Mt. Etna wines. In his early years, Giuseppe had his eyes set on his career in music and literature. However, in 2004 he returned to his hometown of Passopisciaro to tend to his father's 18 hectares of 100-year-old vines planted to varietals native to Mt. Etna. He rose to fame within the region after studying under some of Etna's greatest producers: Frank Cornelissen, Marco de Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, and Andrea Franchetti of Passopisciaro. As a classically trained pianist, Giuseppe is no stranger to precision and focus. His spellbinding wines of extreme elegance and depth can only be created on the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. His "'a Rina" bottling exudes bright red berries, sweet spice, and a faint hint of tobacco displaying the true essence of Mt. Etna.

American Pinot Noir
Featured Pinot Noir
Martin Woods, "Jessie James", Eola-Amity Hills, 2021
$167.00
Winemaker Evan Martin is humbly producing some of the greatest Pinot Noir found anywhere in the world. Like a virtuoso artist, Evan's discerning taste leads him to maniacally select only the highest of quality grapes, sourced from vineyard sites as rare and exceptional as they come. His Jessie James site faces east and comprises a small, four-acre area. Grapes are planted on the famed Nekia soil based of shallow, rocky volcanic basalt resulting in wines with small berries and thick skins. The name of the wine comes from Jessica and James Lee who Evan Martin leases the vineyard from.

Dessert Wine
Featured Vin Santo del Chianti
Villa Calcinaia, 2011
Literally translated "Holy Wine", Vin Santo has a rich history dating back to the heart of the Renaissance era. Using the unique passito method, grapes are dried out on straw mats to concentrate sugars and amplify complexity. Legend has it that a 14th century friar once used leftover Vin Santo from Mass to heal the sick. We're not guaranteeing a miracle, but might suggest that a glass of this 'enlightened spirit' can cure what ails you

Recioto della Valpolicella Classico, Quintarelli, 2004
Though Giuseppe Quintarelli gained his fame with his red wines, especially his iconic Amarone, the estate also crafts a beautiful white, evocative of the Veneto. This is a seductive blend of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscana, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Saorin deriving from 30-year- old vines grown in mineral-rich soils. Combining a rounded texture and lifted aromatics, this is a perfect white wine to use as an aperitif on its own or paired with light, crisp bites. Served out of a magnum, this is an undeniable declaration of being determined to bring the party.
