Dermal Fillers are a non-invasive treatment for smoother, more youthful skin.
As we age, our skin loses its natural elasticity and the smooth complexion we took for granted as teenagers begins to fade. Unfortunately the way our skin ages is largely determined by our genetics, but the process is accelerated by smoking, poor diet and sun exposure.
By injecting tiny amounts of non-animal based hyaluronic acid into the skin or lips
Dermal Filler treatment gives you the opportunity to temporarily halt or even reverse the aging process by restoring volume and elasticity where you need it most. After one short treatment, the skins surface is 'plumped up', the appearance of lines and wrinkles are diminished and there is a marked improvement in suppleness. Safe and long lasting, Dermal Fillers provide a youthful lift to your appearance and an invaluable boost to your confidence.Who's it for?
Almost anyone who is unhappy about the current appearance of their skin can benefit from treatment with Dermal Fillers.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used on nearly every part of the face to tackle a wide range of concerns. Your doctor will discuss the best option for you depending on the specific problem areas you wish to target.
If you like to
Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles almost anywhere on the face
'crow's feet', nose to mouth furrows or 'marionette lines', wrinkles around the mouth, glabella lines between the eyebrows
Enhance your smile with fuller, more youthful lips or define your cupid's bow
Redefine or soften the contours of your face, such as the chin or cheeks or reduce the appearance of a prominent chin
Benefit from a healthier, more youthful looking skin tone on your face, neck, hands or décolletage
What can I expect from treatment with Dermal Fillers?
Before treatment
At your pre-treatment consultation, your physician will help you to complete a medical history form and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Your physician will take the time to explain the procedure in full and you will have a chance to ask any questions you may have concerning the treatment.
The procedure
During treatment a tiny amount of the Dermal Filler gel is injected into the skin or lips with a very fine needle to provide instant volume and smoothness where you would like it most. Treatment typically only takes between 15-30 minutes.
After treatment
For optimum results, a top-up treatment it is generally recommended approximately 6-12 months after your first appointment. We will help you plan the best time for your next treatment.
Results
Dermal fillers provide almost instant results. After your first treatment, your skin will appear smoother and more even toned and the appearance of lines and wrinkles will have reduced. You will notice that your skin feels and looks firmer, appears healthier and has a more vital and youthful glow. If you have had treatment to enhance your lips, you will see an immediate difference in the volume and definition of your lips. The end result is both subtle and dramatic you, but better.
Botox
There are two categories of facial wrinkles: static and dynamic. Static wrinkles are visible when your face is at rest and occur during the aging process because of the loss of elastic tissue. Dynamic wrinkles appear temporarily when a muscle contracts during facial expression (i.e. smiling, frowning). Dynamic wrinkles are commonly found in areas of facial expression like the forehead (worry lines), between the eye brows (glabellar lines), and around the eyes (crow's feet). BOTOX® Cosmetic diminishes or even eliminates the appearance of dynamic wrinkles because it paralyzes the underlying muscle causing the wrinkle. When injected directly into the muscle, the purified Botulinum toxin type A prevents the muscle from contracting by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle. Because the muscle cannot contract, the wrinkle cannot form and as a result it gradually diminishes. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not as effective on static wrinkles which are better treated surgically or with dermal fillers. Disclaimer: This information is intended only as an introduction to this procedure. Details and treatment options will be discussed at your consultation.
How many treatments do you need?
The amount of relaxation and the length of time the relaxation lasts depend on three factors: The size and strength of the muscle being injected; Your sensitivity to the medication; The amount of Botox injected into the muscle. The first two factors vary between individuals so you may require more or less medication than another person to produce the same results. The effects of Botox injections normally last for three to six months. Typical units needed per site.
What can I expect?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscle which causes the dynamic wrinkles. A very small needle is used to minimize discomfort and the injection feels like a small prick accompanied by a little stinging. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes and since the procedure is non-surgical, no recovery time is needed so patients can immediately return to work or other activities.
How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works
The BOTOX® Cosmetic enters the nerve endings and blocks the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that causes muscles to contract. The paralysis takes 1 to 5 days to occur and peaks in two to four weeks with results lasting from three to six months. Because the effect gradually wears off, owing the dynamic wrinkle to return, follow up treatments are necessary to maintain the desired result. Like any other muscle that is not exercised, muscles treated with Botox become weaker over time. If you follow a good maintenance program, your next injections will occur when the relaxation begins to wear off but just before the muscles can form wrinkles again. At this time, there are still residual effects from the earlier injections. Repeat treatments may lead to improved results as the muscle causing the wrinkles becomes less responsive over time, a process called chemical denervation.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Side Effects
BOTOX® Cosmetic can't be used if there is an infection at the proposed injection site(s) or in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation (the milk protein Casein). Also, patients with neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis and Eaton Lambert Syndrome may be at increased risk of clinically significant systemic effects from typical doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic. The most common side effects are headache, respiratory infection, flu-like syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring ( 3%) side effects include facial pain, injection site redness, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first week. About one person in ten thousand (.01%) can form antibodies that inactivate Botox and prevent it from relaxing the injected muscles. Makeup may be applied after the treatment, but you should avoid pressing or rubbing the area for several hours.
Dysport
What Is Dysport?
DysportTM is abobotulinum toxin type A, a highly purified protein that blocks messages between the muscles and the nerves that control them, thereby relaxing facial expression lines. Dysport is most commonly used for wrinkles between the eyebrows (the glabellar area), but is also used for lines across the forehead and crow's feet around the eyes. Prior to its FDA approval in the United States, Dysport was to be released under the name Reloxin but that name was dropped.
What results can you expect?
The effects of Dysport injections normally become apparent after two to five days and normally last for three to six months. When facial muscles contract, they form creases that eventually create wrinkles. Relaxing those muscles eliminates facial creases and the wrinkles in those creases gradually fade. The relaxation also prevents the muscles from forming new creases and wrinkles.
How many treatments do you need?
The amount of relaxation and the length of time the relaxation lasts depend on three factors: The size and strength of the muscle being injected. Your sensitivity to the medication. The amount of Dysport injected into the muscle. The first two factors vary between individuals so you may require more or less medication than another person to produce the same results. The effects of Dysport injections normally last for three to six months. Like any other muscle that is not exercised, muscles treated with Dysport become weaker over time. If you follow a good maintenance program, your next injections will occur when the relaxation begins to wear off but just before the muscles can form wrinkles again. At this time, there are still residual effects from the earlier injections. Weaker muscles with residual effects from earlier treatments often require less medication than the original injections to produce the same results.
Things you should know
Side effects are generally limited to the injection site and may include slight swelling or bruising. Bruising is more likely if you take blood thinning substances including vitamin E, aspirin, NSAIDs (e.g., Naproxen, Advil, Aleve, Motrin or Naprosyn), or prescription medications such as coumadin. Headaches lasting several hours may occur. In rare instances, adjacent muscles may be weakened for several weeks after an injection. Dysport treatments are contraindicated if you have muscle diseases such as Lou Gehrig's, Eaton-Lamber syndrome, myasthenia gravis or you are taking medications that interfere with neuromuscular transmissions (e.g., polymysins, quinidine, anticholinesterases, magnesium sulfate). Makeup may be applied after the treatment, but you should avoid pressing or rubbing the area for several hours.
Restylane Perlane
How does restylane work?
Restylane adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane can also add fullness and definition to lips in patients over 21 years, providing natural-looking and lasting results with just one treatment. Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body's own hyaluronic acid. So, you can use Restylane to visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and to add fullness to your lips. Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane only), as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. If a volume of more than 3 mL total is needed to achieve optimal correction for lip enhancement, a follow-up treatment session is recommended. Biocompatible with the human body, Restylane is eventually broken down naturally.
What results can you expect?
The results are immediate and very natural looking. There is little or no down time and most people return to their normal daily activities right after their visit.
How many treatments do you need?
Restylane-L lasts up to one year. A touch-up approximately one month after the initial treatment may be required to achieve optimal results.
How much time is required?
The initial injections usually require one hour. The injection of multiple syringes or the application of a local anesthetic may increase this to ninety minutes. Follow-up visits for touchups are usually thirty minutes or less. I can provide a more precise time estimate after examining you and discussing the amount of correction you desire.
Things you should know
As with any injection, you may experience mild irritation, swelling, itching, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. Restylane-L contains lidocaine, an anesthetic that makes the procedure more comfortable. Additional topical or local anesthetic may be administered for comfort and the cost is included in the treatment price.
How does Perlane work?
Just like Restylane, Perlane adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Like Restylane, Perlane is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that is specifically formulated to add volume like your body's own hyaluronic acid. What makes Perlane different is the average size of the particles and the depth of injection. On average, the gel particles in Perlane are larger than those in Restylane, which makes Perlane a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin. In three clinical studies of 150 patients each, on average 70% of patients maintained improvement for six months after just one Perlane treatment. During your consultation, your we will decide together which product is right for you.

Understanding Where Wrinkles Form
Your skin consists of two layers known as the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, acts as the skin's primary defense against the environment. The dermis, or innermost layer of the skin, is composed primarily of connective tissue and provides the skin with a support network. Most facial wrinkles and deeper nasolabial folds occur within the dermal layer of the skin.
Our Skin's Natural Moisturizer
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In this way, Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body's internal moisturizer. But, as we age, HA diminishes, which contributes to the presence of lines and folds. JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to diminish wrinkles and nasolabial folds.
Experiencing Rejuvenation
JUVÉDERM® XC dermal filler is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle, your healthcare professional eases JUVÉDERM® XC under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis. This adds volume and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and nasolabial folds instantly. While there are a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers, JUVÉDERM® XC is uniquely formulated. A next generation HA filler, JUVÉDERM® XC uses a manufacturing process called HYLACROSSTM technology. HYLACROSSTM gives JUVÉDERM® XC its special smooth-gel structure that holds up over time. That's why JUVÉDERM® XC is the first smooth-consistency HA gel and the only HA filler that's FDA approved* to last up to one year with only one treatment.
Radiesse
Why choose radiesse volumizing filler?
Collagen is what gives volume, flexibility and strength to healthy, young skin. As a part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity all of which rob your skin of its youthful, fresh appearance. Radiesse is a safe, FDA approved dermal filler that delivers immediate, long lasting, natural looking results. A fine needle is used to inject Radiesse into the deep dermis beneath the wrinkle or skin fold where it adds volume to plump up the skin. Ideal wrinkle reduction is achieved by replenishing your skin's lost volume. Upon injection, RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. But what's unique about RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of RADIESSE Volumizing Filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients, which is why more and more cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists, and other medical professionals are choosing RADIESSE Volumizing Filler to achieve long-lasting facial rejuvenation.
What results can you expect?
The results are immediate, long lasting, and natural looking. There is little or no down time and most people return to their normal daily activities right after their visit. Treatment with RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is quick, comfortable and convenient, with immediately visible, long-lasting results. Experience what millions worldwide have and begin your journey towards a naturally, more refreshed you today.
How many treatments do you need?
Unlike previous generations of dermal fillers, Radiesse usually lasts 1 to 112 years. A touch-up approximately one month after the initial treatment may be required to achieve optimal results.
Things you should know
Because Radiesse is designed for injection into the deep dermis, I do not recommend it for lip enhancement. As with any injection, you may experience mild irritation, swelling, itching, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. A topical or local anesthetic may be administered for comfort and the cost is included in the treatment price. The microspheres in Radiesse can be seen in X-rays and CT scans so you should inform your doctor and other health care professionals that you have had facial Radiesse injections. There is little risk that it would cause your doctor concern as long as s/he is aware of the injections.

Chemical and Enzyme Peels
Chemical and enzyme peels use topically applied solutions that rejuvenate the skin's surface by creating an even and controlled shedding of several layers of skin cells.
This exposes new, undamaged layers that are softer and smoother with more even skin tones. Chemical and enzyme peels also stimulate the dermis to create new skin cells, collagen, and elastin, which support and tighten the surface of your skin. Specific chemicals, enzymes, and solution strengths may be particularly effective for different skin conditions such as uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, acne, dry skin, or sensitive skin.
Chemical and enzyme peels are divided into three types: superficial, medium-depth, and deep.
The type of peel depends on the strength of the chemicals used and the depth to which those chemicals penetrate.
Superficial peels are effective for fine wrinkles, sun damage, acne, and rosacea.
A series of peels is usually recommended to progressively improve the skin surface and train the dermis to produce new collagen, elastin, and skin cells more rapidly. There is little or no down time and makeup can normally be applied immediately after the peel. Other than slight stinging or burning sensations when the peel is applied, there is minimal discomfort involved. Skin Care By Design offers a variety of superficial chemical and enzyme peels described on this page.
Medium-depth peels are used for more obvious wrinkles, more extensive sun damage, and for precancerous lesions like actinic keratoses.
Depending on the depth of the peel, social downtime varies from a few days to two weeks and may involve significant flaking and peeling. Discomfort is normally limited to a burning sensation when the peel is applied and cooling fans are used to alleviate this. Skin Care By Design offers several medium-depth peels described on the Specialty Peels page.
Deep peels are used for the most severe wrinkling and sun damage.
These should only be performed by qualified physicians and anesthesia is often required. Recovery time is usually six to twelve weeks. Skin Care By Design does not perform deep chemical peels.
We offer a variety of superficial chemical and enzyme peels described below.
A Glycolic/Lactic acid peel is designed for dry, sensitive, sun exposed skin and is our most popular peel. It is appropriate for the face, neck, chest, hands, and arms. After cleansing the area to be treated, a gel containing a combination of glycolic and lactic acids is applied to the area and allowed to remain for up to five minutes. After the acids are neutralized and removed, the skin is lightly scrubbed to remove damaged skin cells loosened by the peel. A blend of vitamins and products customized to your skin's needs is gently massaged into the area and UVA/UVB sunblock is applied. Vitamin E balm is applied to the lips to complete the procedure.
How does it work?
When combined, glycolic acid and lactic acid work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while reducing irritation and dryness. The molecular structure of glycolic acid allows it to penetrate quicker and deeper than other alphahydroxy acids (AHA) to perform at all levels of the skin. Lactic acid is a gentle but effective AHA that increases moisture levels by stimulating the production of glycosaminoglycans. By accelerating the cell renewal process, stimulating collagen synthesis, and improving elastin fibers in the dermis, this light chemical peel revitalizes photodamaged skin and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What are the benefits?
This peel is best for dry, rough, sun damaged skin and has no downtime. Your skin is refreshed, retexturized, and hydrated. Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished, leathery skin is softened, and skin tones are noticeably more even.
How many treatments do you need?
This varies depending on the amount of skin damage you are attempting to correct. A single treatment provides improvements you can see and feel. A series of 4 - 6 weekly peels will achieve significant skin improvement. Maintenance treatments to keep your skin looking its best should occur at four to six week intervals.
Things you should know.
There is no downtime but you may appear flushed for 15-30 minutes after the treatment. This treatment should not be performed if you have taken Accutane within the past twelve months and you should avoid the use of RetinA, Renova, or glycolic acids within one day before or after the treatment. Makeup may be applied immediately.

Salicylic/Mandelic Acid Peel
What is a Salicylic/Mandelic Acid peel?
This is the perfect peel for acne prone skin and problems such as inflammation, excess oil, and congested pores. It is appropriate for the face, neck, chest, back, and arms. After cleansing the area to be treated, a gel containing a combination of salicylic and mandelic acids is applied to the area and allowed to remain for up to five minutes.
When combined, salicylic acid and mandelic acid work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while decongesting pores and reducing irritation. Although mandelic acid is one of the strongest alphahydroxy acids (AHA), its large molecular structure and even penetration help prevent irritation and inflammation that can sometimes occur with AHA use. Salicylic acid is a lipid soluble betahydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates pores to dissolve sebum and cellular debris. By accelerating the cell renewal process, stimulating collagen synthesis, improving elastin fibers in the dermis, and deep cleansing the pores, this light chemical peel revitalizes sensitive skin and helps improve the appearance of problematic skin.
What are the benefits?
This peel is best for sensitive, acne prone, hyperpigmented, or sun damaged skin and has no downtime. Your skin is refreshed and retexturized. Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished, leathery skin is softened, skin tones are noticeably more even, and the frequency and severity of acne breakouts are lessened.

Omega Peel
What is an Omega peel?
The Omega peel is our gentlest peel and is suitable for all skin types, including clients with extremely sensitive skin and clients taking Accutane. It exfoliates the skin, deep cleanses pores, and removes small blackheads. After cleansing the area to be treated, the Omega gel is applied and allowed to activate for 20 seconds. Your skin care nurse will gently massage the area for several minutes. The gel liquefies and begins to loosen the dead skin cells. As the massage continues, the cells become grainy, then clump together. A simple rinse with cool water removes the gel and exfoliated skin cells. A blend of vitamins and products customized to your skin's needs is gently massaged into the area and UVA/UVB sunblock is applied. Vitamin E balm is applied to the lips to complete the procedure.

How does it work?
The Omega peel works on a completely different principle than other chemical or enzyme peels. When skin cells die, they flatten and form the outer layer of your epidermis (the stratum corneum). The dead skin cells are held together primarily by electrostatic bonds. The Omega peel ingredients break those bonds and cause the dead skin cells to clump together as the gel is massaged. There is no possibility of this peel burning the live, healthy skin cells below the surface.
What are the benefits?
The Omega peel is the perfect exfoliant and always leaves your skin silky smooth. It will remove small blackheads and the exceptional pore cleansing inhibits the formation of new blackheads.

Skin Tag Removal
What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are a common, benign condition that consists of a bit of skin that projects from the surrounding skin. Medical terms for skin tags include acrochordon and cutaneous papilloma. Skin tags may be smooth or irregular, flesh colored or more deeply pigmented, and simply raised above the surrounding skin or connected to the skin by a narrow stalk (a peduncle) so that the skin tag hangs from the skin. They commonly appear around the eyelids, neck, groin, underarms, and under the breasts. They are usually painless, but may become irritated and itch.
How are Skin Tags removed?
Depending on the size of the skin tags, they may be shaved off with a scalpel or scissors, or removed with hyfrecation (destroying the tag with small electrical pulses). An antibacterial ointment is applied and the site is covered with a small bandage. Alternate methods of removal not used at Skin Care By Design include cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen) and tying off the tag with a thread or suture to cut off the blood supply.
What results can you expect?
Once removed, skin tags will not grow back. However, most people who have skin tags will develop more of them as time progresses and the new skin tags may develop in the same area from which the original growths were removed.
How many treatments do you need?
A single treatment will permanently remove the skin tag. If you have a large number of skin tags, you may want to have them removed over two or more sessions.
Things you should know.
Swelling, bleeding, and infection at the treatment sites may occur. This procedure does not normally produce scars but may leave small light or dark spots that fade with time.
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of skin tags.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each skin tag is $5.
Wart Removal
What Are Warts?
A wart is a harmless skin growth caused by some types of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can be spread to other parts of the body or to other people by contact. They are chronic, slow growing, and range in appearance from papules and plaques to large, flowering cysts with tiny black dots. Warts can grow anywhere on the body and are most common among children and young adults. Aside from genital warts, which Skin Care By Design does not treat, there are five kinds of warts. They look different and form on different parts of the body. Common warts grow most often on the hands, but they may be anywhere on the body. They are rough, shaped like a dome, and gray-brown in color. Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet. They look like hard, thick patches of skin with dark specks and may be hidden beneath calluses. Plantar warts may cause pain when you walk and can feel like you are stepping on a pebble. Flat warts usually grow on the face, hands, arms, or legs. They are normally smaller than the eraser on the end of a pencil, have flat tops, and can be pink, light brown, or light yellow. Filiform warts usually grow around the eyes, mouth, nose, or beard area. They are the same color as your skin and have growths that look like fingers or threads sticking out of them. Periungual warts grow under and around the toenails and fingernails. They look like rough bumps with an uneven surface and border. They can affect nail growth.
How are Warts removed?
Most warts go away on their own within months or years. For resistant or cosmetically displeasing warts, Skin Care By Design uses hyfrecation (destroying the wart with small electrical pulses) or curettage (shaving off the wart with a scalpel). An antibacterial ointment is applied and the site may be covered with a small bandage. Alternate methods of removal not used at Skin Care By Design include topical agents, cryotherapy (freezing), laser ablation, and surgical excision. If the examination reveals that the condition is beyond the scope of our practice, we may suggest that you consult a physician and we can provide you with several referrals.
What results can you expect?
Warts vary greatly in their size, depth, location, and persistence. After an examination, your skin care nurse can advise you of the range of possible results for each treatment.
How many treatments do you need?
A single treatment is usually sufficient to remove warts affecting only the surface of the skin. Deeper warts may require multiple sessions. However, the treatment of warts should be considered a process, rather than an event. Treatments may destroy the wart but do not kill the virus that causes the wart. As a result, even warts that are completely removed can return.

Wart treatments do not always work. Even after a wart shrinks, goes away, or is removed, it may come back or spread to other parts of the body. Discomfort, swelling, bleeding, and infection at the treatment sites may occur. Depending on the size and depth of the wart, removal may cause scarring or hypopigmentation (a spot that is whiter than the surrounding skin).
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of warts.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each wart is $25.

Mole Removal
What Are Moles?
Moles (nevi) are small skin marks caused by pigment producing cells in the skin. Moles can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some contain hair. Moles may occur anywhere on the body, including the nails, palms, and soles of the feet. Most moles are dark brown or black, but some are flesh-colored, red, or yellow. Moles occur in people of all races and ages, but they most commonly appear between the ages of 10 and 30. Fair-skinned people are more likely to develop moles. Moles can change over time, often respond to hormonal changes, and some can develop into cancer. Non-cancerous (benign) moles are usually symmetrical, have smooth borders, have uniform color, and are generally smaller than the size of a pencil eraser (6 mm).
How are Moles removed?
Moles are removed by hyfrecation (destroying the mole with small electrical pulses). An antibacterial ointment is applied and the site may be covered with a small bandage. Alternate methods of removal not used at Skin Care By Design include surgical excision with stitches and laser ablation (burning off layers of the mole over several sessions). Commercial topical agents may also be applied that dissolve some moles over a period of months or years.
What results can you expect?
Hyfrecation completely removes the mole and involves no stitches so scarring is not usually a problem. After treatment, a scab forms that normally remains 7 - 14 days before falling off.
How many treatments do you need?
A single treatment is sufficient to completely remove most moles. A mole that is deeper in the skin may require multiple sessions.
Things you should know.
Discomfort, swelling, bleeding, and infection at the treatment sites may occur. Depending on the size and depth of the mole, removal may cause scarring or hypopigmentation (a spot that is whiter than the surrounding skin).
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of moles.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each mole is $25.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal
What are Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a common, benign condition in which sebaceous (oil) glands become greatly enlarged. They appear as small, painless, white-, flesh-, or yellow-colored bumps, often with a central depression or dimple. Lesions can be single or multiple and can appear anywhere on the body except the palms and soles. They are most common on the face, particularly the nose, cheeks and forehead and they occasionally occur on the chest, areola, or vulva. Sebaceous hyperplasia occurs principally in middle aged and older adults. Their growth is associated with exposure to androgen hormones and sun, which explains why they are more commonly seen in men than in women. About 10-16% of people on long-term cyclosporin A for organ transplants also develop sebaceous hyperplasia.
How are Sebaceous Hyperplasia removed?
Hyfrecation (destroying the oil gland with small electrical pulses) will cause this condition to subside in a few days. Some people have noticed improvement with the daily application of Tretinoin cream or gel (such as RetinA) over a period of several months. Alternate methods of removal not used at Skin Care By Design include cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen), photodynamic therapy (drugs such as Levulan that are activated by exposure to specific light frequencies), laser ablation, and surgical excision.
What results can you expect?
The cosmetic results are excellent aside from slight reddening in the treatment area that may last for several days.
How many treatments do you need?
A single hyfrecation treatment will remove Sebaceous Hyperplasia.
Things you should know.
Discomfort and slight swelling or reddening at the treatment site are possible. Treatments do not prevent the formation of new Sebaceous Hyperplasia.
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of Sebaceous Hyperplasia.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each Sebaceous Hyperplasia is $5.
Seborrheic Keratosis Removal
What are Seborrheic Keratoses?
Seborrheic Keratoses (barnacles) are benign, wart-like growths on the skin surface. They are most frequently located on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, or back, but may appear singly or in large numbers anywhere on the body. Color is usually yellow, brown, or black, but other colors are possible. The surface may be slightly elevated or flat, may have a rough or wart-like texture, and often feels waxy. Shapes may be round or oval with a "pasted on" appearance. They are usually painless, but may become irritated and itch.
How are Seborrheic Keratoses removed?
Depending on the size of the keratoses, they may be shaved off with a scalpel or curette, or removed with hyfrecation (destroying the keratoses with small electrical pulses). An antibacterial ointment is applied and the site may be covered with a small bandage. An alternate method of removal not used at Skin Care By Design is cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen).
What results can you expect?
Once removed, Seborrheic Keratoses will not grow back. However, most people who have Seborrheic Keratoses will develop more of them as time progresses and the new keratoses may develop in the same area from which the original growths were removed.
How many treatments do you need?
A single treatment will permanently remove the Seborrheic Keratosis. If you have a large number of keratoses, you may want to have them removed over two or more sessions.
Things you should know.
Seborrheic Keratoses can closely resemble malignant melanomas, a very dangerous cancer. If there is any doubt, our nurses will ask you to consult your dermatologist for a skin biopsy prior to removing the growth. Swelling, bleeding, and infection at the treatment sites may occur. Depending on the size, removal may cause scarring or hypopigmentation (a spot that is whiter than the surrounding skin).
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of Seborrheic Keratoses.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each Seborrheic Keratosis is $5.
Cherry Angioma Removal
What Are Cherry Angiomas?
Cherry Angiomas are the most common vascular lesions to appear on human skin. They are made up of clusters of dilated capillaries near the surface of the skin, which accounts for the cherry-red or purple color. They are painless and harmless but their cause is unknown. You can develop cherry angiomas anytime in your life, but they occur most frequently after the age of 40. The cherry-red bumps develop alone or in groups, most often on the torso and frequently on the face, scalp, neck, arms, and legs. When they first appear, cherry angiomas are about the size of a pinhead and do not protrude above the surface of the skin. As they grow larger, they tend to expand in thickness, and may take on the raised and rounded shape of a dome. Because the blood vessels comprising the angioma are so close to the skin's surface, cherry angiomas may bleed profusely if they are injured. For this reason, you should not puncture them or try to remove them yourself.
How are Cherry Angiomas removed?
We use two procedures to remove cherry angiomas: Hyfrecation - removing the angioma with small electrical pulses. Laser vaporization - using an intense beam of light to remove the angioma. This technique involves minimal harm to the surrounding skin tissue. An antibacterial ointment is applied and the site may be covered with a small bandage. An alternate method of removal not used at Skin Care By Design is cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen).
What results can you expect?
Unless the lesion is more than 14 inch across, you can expect excellent cosmetic results.
How many treatments do you need?
A single treatment is usually sufficient to remove cherry angiomas but, because many tiny capillaries are involved, additional sessions may be required to remove all traces.
Things you should know.
Swelling, bleeding, and infection at the treatment sites may occur. Removal may cause scarring or hypopigmentation (a spot that is whiter than the surrounding skin) if the cherry angioma is larger than 14 inch across.
How much time is required?
Appointments are normally 15-30 minutes but may be longer for large numbers of Cherry Angiomas.
How much does it cost?
There is a $20 setup charge and each Cherry Angioma is $5. If many angiomas are removed in the same session, the cost may be reduced to $50 per five minutes of laser pulses.
Acne Removal
Types Of Acne
There are many misconceptions about the causes of acne. Acne is not triggered by stress, eating greasy foods or not properly cleaning your skin. Acne is a medical condition that often is a result of heredity. Without proper treatment acne can afflict a patient for years or the majority of their life.
Non-Inflammatory
Whiteheads are plugged follicles below the surface of the skin. Blackheads are plugs that are dark in color and push through the skin's surface.
Inflammatory
Papules are firm, pink bumps that are tender or sore. Pustules are small, red round lesions with a white center. Nodules or Cysts are a severe form of acne usually very large and painful and may cause scarring.
Acne conditions require a multi-step medical solution
Wash with a mild cleanser (hand wash, no cloth) daily. This type of skin care will help reduce the effects of acne.
Use of a Topical Retinoid product (vitamin A) can effectively manage acne. Retinoids can be used long-term and have been proven safe and effective.
Retinoids also diminish some of the signs of aging skin. Examples of retinoids; Retinol, Retinaldehyde (Retrinal), Adaplene (for darker skin) (Differin 0.1% gel) and Tretinoin (Retin-A micro 0.1% gel). Retinoids should be used before bedtime because retinoids cause the skin to be light sensitive. Retinoid treatment may also be combined with a salicylic acid, glycolic acid and a daily moisturizer.
Benzoyl peroxide should be used as a topical every morning as directed.
It works as an antibiotic, but is much safer, and resistance won't occur. You may also consider the use of Ultraviolet (Blu-U) light therapy the blue light kills the acne-causing bacteria.
The use of oral antibiotics can be an effective treatment; however, routine use leads the acne causing germs to become resistant, which limits their effectiveness.
Hormone modulation can also be considered, reducing the amount of testosterone expression on the skin will generally reduce acne breakouts.
Blood tests are necessary to determine what underlying hormonal factors are present and an appropriate plan established.
