Did you know that some haircuts last longer then others? It's true - not because the hair grows any faster or slower, but because well balanced haircuts maintain their shape instead of growing out of shape. Haircutting is an art. The rules are flexible, styles change, but growth direction and gravity stay the same. If you feel that your hair could look and feel better, the staff at White Oak Barber Shop would like to help.
Shaves
Maybe the decimal point has changed, but not the experience. The warm lather, the hot towels, the relaxing break and personal attention of a barber shop shave remain the same. First, your beard is massaged with warm lather to soften the bristles. Then comes the steam towel. "Hey! That's hot!" But it feels sooo good. Warm lather is reapplied and the shave begins. The first time over, your face is shaved with the grain of the beard. Then comes the second steam towel – still hot, but now you are used to it and you close your eyes and relax. Your face is now being prepared for the second shave. This time, instead of warm lather, you will be shaved with a moisture cream that is massaged into your entire face like a mini facial. The second shave is done against the grain of the beard or across, depending on your beard and skin. We are looking for that perfect balance of closeness without irritation. The third and final steam towel feels just as good as the first now that your face is clean-shaved and moisturized. The last step smoothes and soothes your face. You guessed it – Stephan Alpine Menthol Skin Toner – famous in barber shops since 1897. It only stings for a second or two, and then you feel the cool breeze of the whirling towel. Wow, that feels great!
Shoe Shine
The shoe shine stand was once a common sight in the barbershop. In the '50s and '60s, the White Oak Barber Shop on Dayton Blvd. had a shoe shine stand. Well, those days are back at the Red Bank location. Drop off your shoes or have them shined on your feet. We are excited to offer this service again. Preserve your leather shoes with proper nourishment and they will look good and last for years. At the White Oak Barber Shop our shoe shine tech will clean, polish and nourish your shoes and boots. They always use at least three coats of polish. The first two coats nourish the leather, and the third coat of gloss polish makes them look like new.
Traditional Barber Shop - Traditional Services
White Oak Barber Shop brings back the traditional barbershop by offering the best men's haircuts and hot lather face shaves.
Of course, every haircut is finished with a straight razor neck shave. You can rest assured you'll get a great haircut, every time.
In the 19th century, American men went only to barbershops for haircuts and shaves.
The barbershop was also a meeting place for local businessmen. In those days, to prevent the spread of disease, regular customers often kept their own shaving brushes and porcelain mugs with artwork marking their trade. The safety razor brought about a change in the daily business for the barber, but men still enjoyed congregating at their neighborhood barbershop.
In the 1960s, after the invasion of the Beatles, men grew longer hair. Many of the more talented barbers turned their skills to unisex hairstyling.
By the 1980s the number of barber shops in America had dwindled. White Oak Barber Shop is one of the few remaining historical barber shops. It dates back to 1932, when barbers took great pride in their work.
Master barber Merritt Potter is determined not only to preserve the history of the barber shop, but also the quality of the services performed.
After years in a unisex styling salon himself, Potter says it's great to be back in a barber shop again.
Barbers
Isabella
Hi, I'm Isabella Originally from Cookeville, I graduated Master barber school and moved to Chattanooga to seek better opportunities. Not knowing I would work for the "Best of the Best", I am so honored to be here. Growing up, I practically lived in a barbershop. My mother, who was also a barber, had a barbershop built in our house. Watching her cut hair every day really inspired me to walk in her footsteps. Aside from my job, I love to play video games, board games, and read comic books. I am also a crazy guru for movies. I'm a huge fan of Wonder Woman too, so much that I have a tattoo of her on my arm. I also enjoy watching NFL, drawing, and eating pizza rolls. Come on in and let me be the one to cut your hair! Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." — Steve Jobs I've been cutting hair for 14 years, and I love it every day. I do great work while applying the same attention to detail and high level of care to all my clients, no matter the style or cut. Some clients need styles that are simple, low maintenance and versatile. I'm happy to do those cuts; they're my bread and butter. But the haircuts that challenge me technically and inspire me aesthetically are vintage cuts, which I've been specializing in for 7 years. I also specialize in every kind of facial hair trimming, grooming and styling. When you let me work on your facial hair, you'll have fun and love the results. I'm an expert in freehand clipper over comb and scissor over comb techniques. I have trained several other barbers throughout my career. I'm an aspiring Scumbassador for Reuzel. I never stop improving. When I'm not cutting hair, I'm exploring outdoors with my dog, enjoying some local culture, traveling and plotting my next adventure. I'm looking forward to meeting you. Jared
Hey I'm Jared, I have been in this industry 4 years now and love cutting hair. I work with a great group of people who also love the art of barbering. The typical style of haircuts I enjoy doing are High & Tights, Pompadour styled cuts, short styled & semi long styled haircuts. The main reason I chose to become a barber is because I get to be responsible for making people look awesome for their careers. Being a barber is important to me because both new and old styles of haircuts represent my creativity and personality. When I'm not behind the chair or have a pair of clippers in my hand, I enjoy having walks with my wife, or watching movies & playing video games. I also enjoy hiking and exploring new things here in Chattanooga. Anything else, come check me out at the shop. See ya then! Jerrika
Hey, I'm Jerrika! I've been in the cosmetology/barber industry for 9 years now. I knew when I was very little that I was passionate about pursuing this as a career. I began studying cosmetology in high school, and I never looked back. I recently transitioned out of a solo barbering business so I've really enjoyed the vibrant, group atmosphere here at White Oak Barbershop! I really enjoy doing men's haircuts. I'm willing and able to perform any cut my client prefers, but my specialty is fades. When I'm not working, I'm still thinking of style and beauty. I love all things makeup (eyebrows on fleek!) so I spend a lot of time watching YouTube vlogs and tutorials. I live for this stuff. Can't wait to see you in my chair! Jonny
Hey, you guys, come see me at the White Oak Barber Shop! I can talk your ear off about pretty much anything from sports to jokes to collecting to TV shows. We can even talk a little about the news if that's what you want. Why do I like working here? "Why wouldn't I like working here?" is the better question. I'm relatively new in the field so being among the "best of the best" is a blessing. Every day I learn from my fellow barbers a new style or technique to doing a perfect cut. I'm learning from the finest - and they really care about how you look when you leave this place. When you walk out of the shop, we want you to leave with the perfect cut - the best cut you have ever had. Plus I love the environment in the building; it almost feels as if you have stepped back in time. My favorite cut has to be a Pompadour or any style from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Fades are a favorite, too. I love a clean cut, but if you want to be a little wild and get something like a Mohawk, I love doing that also. Please Check out My Website to See More Hair Cuts - http://jonnybarber.weebly.com. When I'm not in the shop I'm at home working on a project of some kind. I love to bike or take my dogs to the walking bridge or pretty much anything outdoors. I guess if I had to list one thing that is different or unique about me it's that I am a huge nerd when it comes to Star Wars. I even have lightsaber tattoos on my hands. So come on in; I can't wait to meet you. Hours: Mon: OFF; Tue: 9am - 7pm; Wed: 11am - 7pm; Thu: OFF; Fri: 9am - 7pm; Sat: Check Calendar.
