Ocean Gear SCUBA Center has been a NAUI Training Facility since 1987. We offer every training course and most Specialty Activities in the NAUI Recreational SCUBA Program. Our staff is composed of both full-time and part-time instructors who are experts in the field of dive instruction. With both a Course Director and an Instructor Trainer on staff, we can accommodate all your dive training needs. Learning to dive is easy. Choosing to learn isn't always that simple. You have to set aside some time and dedicate some money to completing the task. At Ocean Gear SCUBA Center we believe that you should have choices. We want the choices to meet your needs and unique requirements. The standards for teaching SCUBA are determined by NAUI, the industry's first and most respected certifying agency around. While the standards are set, the manner in which we implement them is left completely up to the instructors you choose to work with. We have included some of our formats for your review. If you have questions, please contact us directly. We'll be happy to work with almost any requirements you may have. The only format we will not adopt is a program where you race through the material so fast that you never truly become comfortable with what you need to know to stay safe. Some aspects of training will not change, no matter what the format is. There will always be a minimum of two pool sessions and five ocean dives. These dives must take place over a minimum of two days.
High School SCUBA Program
Our High School SCUBA Program was the foundation of our company. Starting in 1976 by a group of SCUBA instructors who simply wanted to introduce the underwater environment to a younger group of people, our program has developed over the years to represent quality training at an affordable cost. Our goal is simple: Teach a safe program, have fun doing it and leave the diver with a greater understanding and respect for the world's oceans.
Forms & Study Guides
All Course Prerequisites
25 June 2012. Prerequisites: Must be in good general health and a comfortable swimmer. There is a medical history form to complete and some swim skills to pass in order to participate in our program. While the Industry does permit SCUBA Diver training/certification as young as 10 years, the minimum age for our training programs is 12 years of age. We are happy to do birthday parties and group activities for young people, but certification is different. Even the 12 year olds must be made to understand the "responsibility" of being certified. From ages 12-14 years the divers obtain the JUNIOR DIVER rating. This simply means that the young diver must always dive with any other certified diver age 18 or older. No re-certification is necessary at age 15. You simply become a certified SCUBA Diver. You can obtain an updated card if you desire. There is a provision in our standards that allow for training of people between the ages of 10-12. While we allow them to participate in the pool training, we have made a conscious decision to encourage that these divers pursue training in our Skin Diver program. Once they reach 12 years they can then roll into our Junior SCUBA Diver Program. Some Specialty Courses and ALL Leadership Courses require that the diver must be at least 18 years of age by the conclusion of the course. As always, it is a good idea to call Ocean Gear for details.
Try Scuba Training Program
25 June 2012. The name says it all. Simply TRY SCUBA as part of your regular Physical Education program. The program lasts 3-4 weeks. Depending upon each high school, this time will equal about 1/3 to 12 of your grading period. The course will meet each of your regular course days. Some days are in the classroom and some are in the pool. We will cover various topics including: SCUBA Science, Environment, Equipment and Dive Safety. When we are done, you return to your regular P.E. class. The course is offered once a year at our participating schools. If this program is not offered at your high school, put us in contact with your P.E. department and we see if we can put something together.
Study Guides for SCUBA Diver Course
09 October 2013. The links are for various study guides to help you through our SCUBA Diver Classes. Whether you are in our Try SCUBA, Passport Diver or SCUBA Diver Class, these guides will be of benefit. They are not a substitute for textbooks or good "note taking"; however, they will help you focus your studies. They may be printed as needed; or better still, print all at once and maintain them in a folder for class. Remember that your grade in class is based partially upon whether, or not, you have these forms with you in class (P.E. Classes only).
Semi-Private Training - $750 (minimum 2 people - Price is adjusted down as number of students increases)
07 January 2014. This format follows all the requirements of our Private Course format with one significant difference. There is more than one of you. This is the ultimate Private Party. We still have to coordinate instructors and resources (pools, class times, etc.). This is a format for those with unusual or irregular schedules, looking to train with their friends and have a premium experience through the whole activity. The minimum number of students for this program is two. Numbers of pool sessions are dictated by the skill level and aptitude of the divers. Frequently pool sessions are completed in as few as three to four sessions. In no circumstance will we conduct all pool training in a single day. Our experience has found this to be counter-productive to your long-term learning ability. Five diving activities are still required and they must be spread over a minimum of two days. We keep these dates flexible in that they can be completed on as your schedule permits.
Passport Diver Program
25 June 2012. This program was originally developed as a way to allow you to go SCUBA diving under very controlled circumstances. While receiving your training in the Try SCUBA Program you may enroll in the Passport Diver Program. We will take the training you receive as part of your P.E. program and add some additional training during the same 3-4 week training window. In addition to the extra training, the diver will also need to complete 3 Open Water (Ocean) Dives offered on the weekends or on one of our other diving activities. Once all the classroom, pool and ocean training are completed, the Passport Diver is then able to travel any place in the world in dive under good conditions under the DIRECT supervision of a certified SCUBA Instructor or Dive Master. The Passport Diver can apply their training later and upgrade to the full certification (SCUBA Diver) program. Benefits of our Passport Diver Program include:
Free Refresher Programs
Access to boat diving trips
Access to exotic dive trips
SCUBA Diver Upgrade
25 June 2012. This is the third and final step in our High School Program. You must be enrolled in our Passport Diver Program to upgrade to the Full Certification (SCUBA Diver) Program. You take all the training received in both the Try SCUBA Program and the Passport Diver Program and add a little more training during the end of our 3-4 week P.E. program in High School. You will also have to complete 2 additional ocean dives (for a total of 5 dives completed) and pass a written exam to earn your certification. Once earned, you are certified to dive any place on the planet for the rest of your life. You are also eligible to enroll in the next series of continuing education courses that we offer. Benefits of our SCUBA Diver Program include:
Free Refresher Courses
Earning Free Boat Trips through our Internship Program
Discounts on SCUBA equipment
Private Training - $995 to $1250
07 January 2014.

Imagine your every need attended to and taken into consideration.
Standard SCUBA Diver Program - $350
07 January 2014.
This class meets three times for training.
The sessions are generally conducted on the weekends when most people are available. Prior to each session the student diver will have completed some academic learning at home with the help of our award winning education materials. You'll read a little, watch a video, take a few short quizzes. Best of all, you can do this online at any time - whenever you have a few extra minutes. That's right, you can do everything online, whenever it is convenient.
Each session will have a short overview at Ocean Gear to make sure you are comfortable with all the material.
We will also use this time to help with material that a textbook cannot do justice with. This is where you ask questions and get clarification. Our next phase in the session is our pool time. Here is where you learn how to dive. Three pool sessions is standard. We promise that we will spend whatever time is necessary for you to be comfortable with diving. If that means an additional session with the instructor, or some more pool dive then you shall have it.
At the conclusion of the pool training, you are then ready to start diving in the ocean.
We have 5 diving activities in conjunction with NAUI standards of training. That's 20% more that the other organizations offer. Of these five activities, there are four SCUBA dives and one Skin Dive (no tank and regulator). These dives can be completed on our weekend beach dives or on one of our boat trips. Our beach dives focus on training our divers on how to properly handle themselves with California surf.
There is also a written review that must be completed.
We set high standards for our training; however, we absolutely promise that if you are willing to put in the time, you will succeed and become a truly comfortable SCUBA Diver. Once all the coursework, pool work, ocean dives and written review are completed, you are a certified SCUBA Diver. This certification never expires and it never needs to be renewed.

These forms will be necessary for the first day of class.
You will not be able to enter the pool without these forms being completed and signed by diver and parent, if diver is under 18 years old. Please remember to enter all the information and then print the forms. Do not print them and then fill them in by hand. Your only handwriting should be your signature.
This second series of forms is necessary if you are participating in our High School P.E. Program.
These forms must be turned in, usually by the second class. They do not commit the diver to any extra-curricular activities; however, they serve to make sure the parents are properly informed of all the program requirements and options.
