Amber / Red Ales
American amber/red ales range from light copper to light brown in color. They are characterized by American-variety hops used to produce high hop bitterness, flavor, and medium to high aroma. Amber ales have medium-high to high maltiness with medium to low caramel character. They should have medium to medium-high body. ABV: 3.5-5.8%
Brown ale is a style of beer with a dark amber or brown color. Beers termed brown ale can include sweet low alcohol varieties, medium strength amber beers of moderate bitterness, and malty but hoppy beers. ABV: 4.2-7.2%
Fruits have been used as a beer adjunct for centuries, especially with Belgian lambic styles. Cherry, raspberry, and peach are a common addition to this style of beer. Mostly brewed as ales these beers offer a wide range of flavors and potency. ABV: 3-9%
Ipa (India Pale Ale / Double Ipa)
India Pale Ale or IPA is a beer style within the broader category of pale ale. It was first brewed in England in the 19th century. Beers identifying themselves as IPAs typically smell and taste of hops, are gold to amber in color, and lack the roasted character of darker beers. ABV: 5.1-7.4%
Lager (German: Storage) is a type of beer that is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures. Pale lager is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of beer in the world. ABV 4.2-5.8%
Wheat beer is a beer that is brewed with a large proportion of wheat in addition to malted barley. Wheat beers are usually top-fermented (as required by law in Germany). The main varieties are weissbier (includes hefeweizen), witbier, and sour varieties. ABV: 4.5-6.7%
Pale Ale is a beer made by warm fermentation using predominantly pale malt. The higher proportion of pale malts results in a lighter colour. Ther term "pale ale" first appeared around 1703 for beers made from light malts, which resulted in a lighter colour than other beers popular at that time. Different brewing practices and hop levels have resulted in a range of taste and strength within the pale ale family. ABV: 4.2-6.8%
Brown porters are mid to dark brown in color. No roast barley or strong burnt/black malt character should be perceived. Low to medium malt sweetness is acceptable along with medium to hop bitterness. Robust porters are black in color and have a roast malt flavor but no roast barley flavor. These porters have a sharp bitterness of black malt without a highly burnt/charcoal flavor. ABV: 4.1-6.4%
Stout is a dark beer made using roasted malt or roasted barley, hops, water and yeast. Stouts were traditionally the generic term for the strongest or stoutest porters, typically 7% or 8%, produced by a brewery. In this sense a stout is not necessarily dark in colour because there are also blonde stouts. ABV: 4.2-8%
The Pilsner, or sometimes known as the Bohemian Pilsner, is light straw to golden color and crystal clear. Hops are very prevalent usually with a spicy bitterness and or a spicy floral flavor and aroma, notably one of the defining characcteristics of the Saaz hop. Smooth and crisp with a clean malty palate, many are grassy. Some of the originals will show some archaic yeast characteristics similar to very mild buttery or fusel (rose like alcohol) flavors and aromas. ABV: 4.5-5.5%
