Cunio worked as a dishwasher at Simon's Restaurant & Piano Bar, an elegant restaurant considered the Canlis of South Seattle, which Hamlin owned and operated in the 1980's. Hamlin helped put Cunio through culinary school. After completing his training, Cunio quickly climbed the ranks to Executive Chef of Umberto's Ristorante and then moved on to Executive Chef and Co-Owner of The Brooklyn Seafood, Steak & Oyster House in 1993. Years later, Cunio and Hamlin are re-uniting again at Mel's Market. "This is a case of life really coming full circle," remarked Hamlin. "Tony has always been extremely dedicated, hardworking and talented." The venture will be a true family operation, as Cunio's wife, Pam, works on the administrative side of things for the Mel's.
