Our Pilates Program
Our focus at Maiden Lane Studios is teaching Movement for the Modern Body, which takes a direct approach to understanding the relationship between physical training & exercise, and the needs of the body for strength, flexibility, and balance.
Contemporary Pilates
Maiden Lane Studios takes a contemporary approach to our Pilates instruction, but maintains the traditional standards of precision and attention to quality. Contemporary Pilates is based on the original work of Joseph Pilates, but has been adapted to adhere to modern scientific research regarding proper biomechanics. Our Pilates instruction is informed by today's knowledge about correct, functional movement. Each session at Maiden Lane Studios is a full body workout, customizable, and always challenging and engaging.
Benefits of Pilates
Pilates focuses on the principles of utilizing core strength, body control, precision, and flow of functional movement with sequenced breath. Maiden Lane Studios emphasizes balance and efficiency in our approach to Pilates training. By developing core strength in the deep muscles of the abdomen, back, and hips, Pilates helps build better body alignment and posture. With our intelligent sequencing, involving whole body, multi-joint movements that require full range of motion, Pilates can help create long, lean, and defined muscles. We also help invoke the fundamental connection that Pilates creates between the mind and the body, helping to reduce stress, creating awareness in the body, and improving mental clarity.
Pilates is for Everyone
Supermodels, professional athletes, office professionals, CEOs, stay-at-home moms, and retirees looking to improve their golf game - all choose Pilates at Maiden Lane Studios. The Maiden Lane Studios Experience Pilates in San Francisco
Comprehensive & Effective
We train the body from head to toe, building strength evenly in both major and supporting muscle groups, while increasing flexibility, stability, balance, endurance, coordination, mobility and range of motion. Get a sculpted physique with long and lean muscles. Pilates tones the arms, back, tummy, hips, legs, and backside, while increasing metabolism and even helping you lose weight. Pilates creates awareness within your own body, helping you move better and with more ease, eliminating aches and pains, including low back pain, while improving your posture and alignment. Create a strong mind-body connection; Relieve stress and improve mental clarity and focus.
Intelligent & Engaging
We take an all-encompassing, functional approach to our instruction, with the modern body and modern lifestyles in mind. With purpose behind each movement, sessions are thoughtfully designed and structured to ensure you never waste time and get the most out of each session. Not to be confused with being easy or ineffective, Pilates is a low-impact and weight-bearing exercise, keeping your knees and joints free of wear and pain, while maintaining bone density. Each Pilates session is never the same. With a nearly countless number of exercises that can be customized to be increasingly more challenging, you will never get bored with Pilates.
Versatile & Unique
Benefits individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including those who have never worked out before, seasoned Pilates veterans, women who are pregnant or have recently given birth, those with injuries or movement pathologies, and those looking to gain an edge in their athletic pursuits. Unlike traditional forms of exercise that can actually make you more prone to injury (such as running, cycling, weight-lifting, and many sports), Pilates can not only help rehabilitate the body from injuries and pain, but can uniquely help strengthen your body to prevent you from getting injured and experiencing pain in the future.
High-Quality & Experienced
Pilates has been in practice for over a century, and more recently has become part of a "fad fitness" trend. Unlike many studios who offer Pilates without a legitimate understanding of the practice, Maiden Lane Studios is dedicated to the quality of our instruction and delivering the life-long benefits it can produce. We believe in personal attention. By closely working with clients in our private sessions and small group classes (max 3 in our apparatus classes and 12 in mat classes), we are able to tailor each session and exercise to best suit you and ensure each session is safe and effective. All of our instructors have gone through extensive and highly-respected Pilates certification programs, and have years of experience working with clients of all backgrounds.
Pilates Services
Private Pilates
Maiden Lane Studios offers private, one-on-one Pilates appointments with our exceptional instructors. Private instruction allows for you to work with an instructor on building a fitness regimen tailored to your needs, whether you are brand new to Pilates, or a seasoned veteran. Details of each session will be noted to track your progress, customize future workouts, and help you meet your goals.
Apparatus Classes
Our group apparatus classes allow only 3 clients per class. With the commitment to quality of each session, the intimate size of our apparatus classes ensures that each client is receiving a high level of attention. Our apparatus classes are evolved, challenging, and results-driven, leaving clients with a sense of accomplishment and mindfulness. To maintain the experience of the class, we require clients to be familiar with Pilates apparatus before enrolling in group apparatus class.
Duets
Duet Pilates appointments can be scheduled with a friend or partner. A duet session allows for a great deal of personal attention, but at a reduced cost from a private session. Duet instruction has the added benefit of working out with a partner, which can be fun and motivating. We recommend duets for clients who are similar in their level of Pilates experience.
Mat Classes
Pilates mat work is built on the foundations of the Pilates repertoire. Utilizing the body's core muscles in the abs, hips, back, and chest, our Pilates mat program will tone and build endurance, balance, and strength in the entire body. Each class will leave one feeling taller, stronger and more in tune with one's body. Small Pilates accessories may also be incorporated in our mat classes. Classes are capped at 12 clients per class.

Pilates for Athletes: Enhance your Edge
Pilates is an excellent cross-training modality for sports such as golf, cycling, skiing, and running. Pilates can help athletes by strengthening smaller, supporting muscles while enhancing overall strength, endurance, and flexibility. You'll find that Pilates is extremely popular among top professional and Olympic athletes. Pilates exercises optimal biomechanics and enhances body control, allowing for more precise yet powerful movements. Pilates eventually teaches you to move more efficiently both in athletic pursuits and all aspects of life. Pilates training offsets the stress of repetitive motions performed in many sports, helping lessen wear on the body and prevent injuries.
Safe yet Effective
Pilates benefits people of all ages in all stages of life, including those who are injured and women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth. Unlike many sports and fitness pursuits, Pilates is low-impact: You won't over wear your knees and joints, allowing you more mobility through your entire life. Pilates is a weight-bearing exercise, helping to improve bone health and maintain bone density. Because of its comprehensive nature, focus on balanced training, and attention to detail, Pilates is a highly effective modality to train the body to function at its best.
Pilates for Brides: Look your Best for your Big Day
It's effective and efficient, even on a tight schedule: Victoria's Secret models use Pilates as a quick go-to when prepping for photo shoots and their annual fashion shows. Results-driven for the big day: Pilates helps cinch the waist and improve posture, tones the arms and back, and creates a firm and lifted backside Pilates increases stamina and energy, while relieving stress. With aerobic & cardiovascular components incorporate into your Pilates sessions, you burn calories and lose weight.
Supports your Lifestyle
Pilates is fun, engaging, challenging, and evolves with you. Pilates will help you whether you're 18 or 80, beginning a new fitness regimen, or are already extremely active. In our everyday life, where we spend much of the day sitting at a desk or driving, Pilates aids in developing proper posture and strengthens the stabilizing muscles that help you sit, stand, and walk correctly. Pilates helps prevent and relieve back and joint pain, as it opens the chest and elongates muscles that have been tightened from sitting forward. Pilates is an exceptionally distinct form of exercise because it emphasizes the mind-body connection and incorporates breath work. Practicing Pilates aids in training the mind to better understand the deep framework of the body, recognizing body imbalances, and how to correct them. Pilates also helps focus the mind while relieving stress and tension in the body.
Pilates for Pregnancy: Safe and Beneficial
Women who are pre-natal can greatly benefit from Pilates as it specifically strengthens the core and pelvis to support a growing baby, relieves back pain, prevents incontinence, and even helps with a smoother delivery. Pilates is also effective and safe for women who have recently given birth, helping the body regain its alignment and pelvic stability, regaining a flatter, firmer belly.
Pilates for Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation: Versatile and Effective
For those in various stages of physical rehabilitation, Pilates exercises can be modified for each person to gently and effectively re-train the body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion. Unlike traditional forms of physical therapy, Pilates trains the body to move as a whole, creating overall strength and stability, rather than only focusing on the injured part. Physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists refer their patients to Maiden Lane Studios because we've successfully worked with all kinds of injuries, clients with spinal and orthopedic issues, neurological problems (MS), chronic pain (fibromyalgia), arthritic impairments and other movement dysfunctions, just to name a few.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why does Maiden Lane Studios insist on such small class sizes - other studios allow up to 10 people in their Pilates apparatus classes?
Not all Pilates is created equal. Due to its numerous benefits, Pilates has become an increasingly sought-after form of physical fitness. Pilates was originally created to be taught with a high level of detail, personal attention, and skill. But with the rising popularity of Pilates over the last 20 years, there has been a flood of offerings to the market, including super-sized classes taught by instructors without proper training and experience. Not only is this type of instruction highly unsafe, it also comes from a background that lacks the knowledge necessary to deliver the many benefits Pilates has to offer. The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) only acknowledges Pilates apparatus classes with 6 or fewer students as true "Pilates." At Maiden Lane Studios, our small class sizes allow us to work with our clients on an individual level, making each workout more effective and more tailored to the individual. With a maximum of 3 clients in our apparatus classes and 12 in our Pilates mat classes, we offer some of the smallest classes in San Francisco, at comparable prices.
What is the difference between classical & contemporary Pilates?
Classical Pilates strictly follows the original work of Joseph Pilates developed during the early 20th century. Classical Pilates is limited to his subset of exercises, without modifications, and was originally developed for the people of that era, who were primarily laborers. At Maiden Lane Studios, we offer contemporary style Pilates, which is based on the original work of Joseph Pilates but has been adapted to modern scientific standards, with a strong influence from physical therapy and the current knowledge of proper bio-mechanics. Contemporary Pilates allows us to teach for the modern body, with variations and more creativity. Contemporary Pilates exercises are generally taught in a "neutral pelvis" position (which follows the natural curvatures of a healthy spine in a standing upright position).
Is Pilates challenging?
The beauty of Pilates is that it is so customizable and benefits everyone, from someone with movement disabilities to professional athletes. Pilates can be an extremely challenging fitness modality, and has the ability to progress in difficultly with each person's practice, ensuring you are engaged and continually getting stronger.
Is Pilates only focused on the "core" and/or stretching?
At Maiden Lane Studios, we believe in working the entire body and building comprehensive strength from the core outTM. Developing a strong and healthy core is one of the keys in producing a strong and balanced body. Many people understand the "core" as the abdominals, but the "core" actually includes a complex, multi-layered series of muscles that include the abdominals, back, and hips. Strengthening your core is more than just creating flat abs. We derive our power and the ability for correct, functional movement for the entire body from the core. In all of our Pilates sessions, we focus on strengthening the core and every limb, including arms, chest, legs, ankles, and backside. Pilates incorporates movements that will stretch and "open up" the body (elongating muscles and muscle groups as well as using exercises to improve posture and open the chest from a forward flexion position), although stretching itself is not the focus of the modality.
Is Pilates only for women?
Definitely not! Many people often associate Pilates with only women, dancers, and people who want an "easy" form of exercise. On the contrary, Pilates was not only originally developed as a training method for men (for soldiers during WWI), Pilates is extremely beneficial to men in particular, for their overall health, and to increase strength, stamina, and agility. Pilates is often used by top professional athletes as a secret weapon to gain an edge on their competitors (think Kobe, LeBron, and Tiger). Pilates also enhances body control, increases flexibility, and helps prevent injuries, making it great for sports such as golf, cycling, skiing, and running. Pilates also helps offset the perils of long hours at the office, as it improves posture and keeps aches and pains at bay, while reducing stress. With the versatility of Pilates, the modality can be adjusted to varying difficulties, making it an effective and challenging workout for those who are just starting out or those who are already very active and strong.
Can Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates can help you lose weight and reshape the body. Although Pilates is not as cardiovascular as other forms of fitness, Pilates employs resistance with endurance that burn calories and speed up your metabolism. Pilates particularly sculpts the body and works muscles that cinch the waist, lifts the behind, and slims & lengthens muscles in the arms, legs, hips. Pilates training also enhances the effects of traditional cardiovascular work outside of your Pilates practice, for example, burning more calories from running with a Pilates practice than without. Like with any other athletic pursuit, a healthy, balanced diet paired with exercise will give you the best results.
Is Pilates safe for women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth?
With your doctor's approval, starting in the 1st trimester, Pilates is safe and actually highly recommended during your pregnancy, even if you've never done Pilates before. Pilates specifically strengthens the core and pelvis to support a growing baby, relieves back pain, helps prevent incontinence, and even helps with a smoother delivery. Pilates additionally helps you adapt to the changes during pregnancy, relieving stress, giving you energy, and helping you find balance and stability in your body through the 9 months of your baby's development. For women who are already very active before their pregnancies, also rest assured that Pilates during pregnancy can still be an athletic workout. With your doctor's approval, Pilates is also effective and safe for women who have recently given birth, helping the body regain its alignment, pelvic stability, and a flatter, firmer belly.
Is Pilates a Fad?
Pilates has been around for nearly a century and isn't going anywhere. Pilates is a highly effective, life-long pursuit that can offer a life-time of benefits. With the versatility and creativity that can go into Pilates, Pilates is actually fun and engaging, and can be extremely beneficial to your body throughout your entire life. Many of our instructors and clients have practiced Pilates for more than 10 years, and swear by the practice.
Why does Pilates cost more than other fitness practices?
In some cases, Pilates on the apparatus can be more expensive, than say, a gym fitness class. This is mainly due to small class sizes, the equipment needed to practice, and the extensive training that goes into teaching Pilates. The pricing for our Pilates services is comparable to, or even less expensive than, San Francisco studios and gyms that offer Pilates. Pilates training at Maiden Lane Studios is akin to personal training, with a high level of personal attention, customization, and effectiveness.
Can I attend a Pilates apparatus class, without previous apparatus experience?
Even for those who are in great shape, we highly recommend taking either one of our Pilates Principles classes or scheduling a private session on the Pilates apparatus. In order to ensure the best experience possible and safety of our mixed-level Pilates apparatus classes, we require that students be familiar with the apparatus and mechanics of Pilates. If you have taken Pilates on the apparatus at another studio or gym, we welcome you to attend our apparatus classes.
What is the difference between Pilates on the mat and Pilates on the apparatus?
Pilates on the mat and Pilates on the apparatus are similar in nature, using core principles of proper movement and form. Pilates mat employs exercises that use body weight and small props to achieve its goals while Pilates apparatus work uses a spring-loaded system of pulleys and cables. Both can be extremely challenging and customizable, but Pilates on the apparatus can give you more training possibilities due to being able the use the machine in many ways, providing you support when you need it, while also having the option to make exercises more challenging. That being said, Pilates mat is no cakewalk, requiring the use of the body in of itself to support the body in many challenging movements. A very effective and informative mode of training, it is highly recommended for those new to the Pilates modality.
What do I need to know prior to my first Pilates session at MLS?
We provide all the equipment and accessories needed for any private session or class you attend at the studio, which are thoroughly cleaned after each use. We also provide towels, water, coffee, tea, toiletries, and keyless lockers to store your belongings. For our Pilates sessions, shoes and socks are not needed. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in, yet not too loose (so that the instructor can still see your form to help make corrections and adjustments).

Why I Teach Pilates
It's simple: Pilates makes my body feel and look good, from the inside and out. I want to share this feeling with others. It's more than fitness, it changes your perspective of how you hold yourself mentally and physically. If I can make one person feel the passion of Pilates, then I've done my job.
Why I Teach Barre
Barre is an outlet to unleash my inner dancer again. Form is critical, but it's also important to enjoy your workouts! It's a fusion of my three favorite things: Dance, Pilates, and Yoga... It's hard not to leave my class completely sweaty and with a big smile!

Why I Teach
I love what I do. I teach Pilates and barre because helping people transform their bodies in ways that allow them to excel in everything that they do, whether that's competing in professional sports, getting ready for a wedding, shaving strokes off their golf game, or just living a healthier life every day is extremely rewarding to me.
Why I Teach Pilates
I truly believe that Pilates is a gift that must be shared. It is a method of movement that simultaneously helps your body, mind, and overall awareness comprehensively stronger. Our clients feel stronger, stand taller, and are more in-tune with themselves after each session. One of my favorite comments from a client was: "my husband says I am more fun since coming here!" It isn't just about the way you look it's about the way you feel and how that resonates with everyone around you. View our Pilates page.
Why I Teach Barre
Barre is a fantastic compliment to Pilates. It's fun and results oriented where the movements help sculpt long and lean muscles. Clients feel the burn first and see the changes in their bodies soon thereafter. The most talked about change is a more firm and lifted backside. No one can complain about that! View our Barre page.
Why I Train in Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST)
As the Director of Instruction and Senior Pilates Instructor at Maiden Lane Studios, and for as long as I can remember, I've been interested in movement, anatomy, and helping others. Teaching Pilates and barre have both been great conduits for pursuing these interests, but now with the addition of Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) under my belt, I've able to provide an even more therapeutic approach to helping others move and feel better. When I was training for my first half-marathon, I incorporated regular FST sessions to my cross-training routine, and credit the success of that first race to these sessions. FST helped with the recovery after long runs, as well as helped me maintain proper alignment and connection to my body. With these positive results, I knew I had to obtain my advanced certification in FST. FST is a comprehensive form of stretching that not only works to lengthen tight muscles, but more importantly it is a system that works from the core joints of the hips and shoulders and then into sheath of fascial tissue that surrounds muscle. Similar to Pilates, this concept of working from the core first is functional and holistic and the results from every session is staggering. View our FST page.
My Teaching Style
I place an emphasis on the flow and transition of my classes and sessions. I like for one movement to seamlessly flow into the next in a purposeful and creative manner. I focus on full body movements that engage multiple muscle groups to work at the same time, where balance, stability, and strength are challenged. Creativity is a key element to my approach, and being able to vary movements and keep routines fresh is always a priority.
Kaley
Certified Pilates & Booty Barre® Instructor
Kaley's interest in movement started at a young age when she practiced dance, rode horseback and was a competitive swimmer. She received her Comprehensive Certification in Pilates from Balanced Body and she is also a member of Balanced Body Barre Faculty. Kaley's clientele ranges from those with severe mobility issues and pre/post natal, to the clients looking to strengthen, tone and get in better shape.
Background
Kaley first discovered her love of Pilates while living abroad in Spain, but it wasn't until she moved back to her hometown of Portland, Oregon that she was able to turn her passion into a profession. Kaley discovered that Pilates can change the body as well as the mind, and she wanted to share that with her clients. For the past three years, Kaley has been teaching in Boston and recently moved to the Bay Area. She enjoys teaching a fun, creative and challenging lesson while still respecting the principles of classical Pilates.
Why I Teach
I genuinely like helping people and helping them learn about how the body works. I think that you learn from the clients and, as clients get better, you get better as a teacher. I like helping clients understand the strengths they didn't think they had, and to challenge them to strengthen themselves in other areas. If they can discover strength or mobility that they didn't know they had, and recognize weaknesses and imbalances that they can work to improve, then all the better.
Why I Teach Pilates
Pilates to me is just like washing your face and brushing your teeth - you need to do it. It is good for the body and mind. I need it personally in my life and I think others do too.
Why I Teach Barre
I like that all the training and attention that is paid to form and alignment in Pilates is translated into active movement in barre - to have that subconscious control in the body, good form, and to fun music.
My Teaching Style
My teaching style is encouraging, supportive, and motivating. I like to help my clients believe that they can do more than they think, because I think we don't give ourselves enough credit for our true potential. I also want my clients to walk out of class feeling stronger and confident in themselves.
Miranda
Certified Pilates & Yoga Instructor
Miranda is a passionate advocate of the complimenting disciplines of Pilates and yoga. Her classes combine the focus, breath and mindset of yoga while maintaining the detail of Pilates instruction. She is dedicated to sharing the joy, challenges and rewards of deep conscious movement with her students.
Background
Miranda began her journey of movement at the age of three in ballet. For the next 20 years she studied ballet, modern and Luigi jazz technique in Boston, New York and at the University of Arizona. Upon moving to San Francisco in 2006, her love of the body led her to an Ashtanga yoga teacher training with Larry Shultz at It's Yoga. The training sparked a deeper curiosity of functional movement, alignment, and body integrity. She continued her education with EHS Institute and competed a Balanced Body Pilates teacher training in 2010. Currently Miranda also facilitates yoga teacher trainings worldwide. Based out of San Francisco, her teaching style creates body intelligence through challenging functional movement. Miranda is a passionate advocate of the complimenting disciplines of Pilates and yoga. Her classes combine the focus, breath and mindset of yoga while maintaining the detail of Pilates instruction. Ali
Pilates Instructor
Ali has always been passionate about helping people feel stronger & more confident about who they are and believes movement is an excellent way to build that. She decided to become a Pilates teacher to help other people discover the same sense of strength for themselves. Ali completed her comprehensive teacher training coursework with Body Arts and Sciences International (BASI) and is now working on her 500 hours of training to complete her certification.
Background
Ali grew up swimming competitively from the time she was seven until going off to college at the University of Michigan. She then took up running and progressively built her way up from a 10K to the marathon. She has run several half and full marathons, completed a triathlon, and several swims from Alcatraz. After years of long distance swimming and running, Ali was seeking a way to gain more strength and flexibility. Upon finding Pilates, she realized just how much she needed a way to counter-balance the effects of the years of repetitive motion. Ali was amazed at the difference she saw in her own balance, flexibility, mobility, and strength. Ali has always been passionate about helping people feel stronger & more confident about who they are and believes movement is an excellent way to build that. She decided to become a Pilates teacher to help other people discover the same sense of strength for themselves. Ali completed her comprehensive teacher training with Body Arts and Sciences International (BASI) in 2014.

Why I Teach
I teach because I love sharing my knowledge and helping people find the connections that make the difference in their body. I love witnessing students feel empowered when they finally understand and feel something they have been working on in class. I also love helping people work against the daily routine of having to drive or sit at the computer all day.
Why I Teach Pilates
Pilates is such a good counter to what we do in our day to day lives in that it helps to bring balance, flexibility, and awareness. Pilates was also very transformational for me when I was dancing. I found that with Pilates, my balance, technique and strength improved significantly. Once I stopped dancing, I knew immediately I wanted to teach people Pilates because I really believe that it is such a great method. I also had some very good instructors who inspired me to teach.
Why I Teach Barre
I love the energy that people bring to the class and the fun that we have while working hard as a group.
My Teaching Style
I have a focus to detail and I like to shake things up and throw in new moves under a consistent theme. I would say I like to empower clients and support them during our sessions.

Lauren
Certified Yoga & Booty Barre® Instructor
In addition to teaching over 700 classes in the U.S. and internationally in Canada, France, and Denmark, she practices yoga daily, finding new challenges and inspiration in every session. Lauren helps her students develop by encouraging them to strengthen their ability to focus, staying in each moment with awareness. She finds that calling for mindfulness and humility not only deepens their understanding of yoga but creates an environment of acceptance and support. Her students learn that proficiency in yoga is not based merely on increased flexibility and strength.
Background
Lauren began her exploration into human well-being as a student at Texas Woman's University where she earned her B.S. degree in nutrition. Lauren was introduced to many facets of yoga at the Kundalini Yoga Ashram in Denton, Texas in 2001 and earned her teaching credential in Moksha Yoga in Montreal in 2010. In addition to teaching over 1500 classes in the U.S. and internationally in Canada, France, and Denmark, she practices yoga daily, finding new challenges and inspiration in every session. Lauren helps her students develop by encouraging them to strengthen their ability to focus, staying in each moment with awareness. She finds that calling for mindfulness and humility not only deepens their understanding of yoga but creates an environment of acceptance and support. Her students learn that proficiency in yoga is not based merely on increased flexibility and strength but in using the practice to reach beyond their individual selves to embrace community.
Why I Teach
The desire to teach came from a genuine curiosity within my own practice and interest in the body and its integration with the mind. I teach because it fuels my own fire, and this fire I am building is there to be share with others.
Why I Teach Yoga
I teach yoga because I believe in what I am teaching: the form, the philosophy, the connection and reflection... all of it. It is so vast, intricate, and has centuries of history and evolution behind its methods. It's interesting because as I have taught more and more over the years, I feel it is my duty to share this gift of yoga with others. It's sometimes hard to consider myself a teacher, I like to think of myself more as a guide that encourages people to discover deep within one's physical and mental self and how that translates into their relationships and environment. The practice is the perfect blend strength and flexibility, power and surrender. I teach because I enjoy the dialogue between teacher and student. Seeing people open up, and disconnect from their roles and commitments for an hour, so they can tap into themselves and nourish themselves is one of the most empowering things one can do for themselves and I am happy to be of a service to that part of people's lives.
Why I Teach Barre
I teach barre because I love to dance and I love music. The energy of our barre classes is uplifting, and the drive of the music has the power to take away the stresses of the day and transcend into strong bodies. Getting people to loosen up and find the beat within them is fun!
My Teaching Style
My teaching style is anatomically based. Building from this foundation of alignment and engagement, I like to incorporate some creative transitions and an opportunity to try some different poses. Each class has a strong foundation with some added flair.
Why I Became a Certified Fascial Stretch Therapist
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a unique modality that increases flexibility, mobility, and range of motion that is relatively pain free. It better aligns the body so that movement happens with better function and ease. The gains made with consistent FST sessions not only aids in physical performance, but also helps reduce stress and ease tension from everyday life. I love helping people understand more about their bodies. My sessions allow time for understanding the sensitivity to the subtle body which is often neglected and yet very important. This intelligence being created adds value to people's lives.
Michelle
Certified Yoga Instructor
Michelle has studied various styles of yoga including Hatha, Iyengar and Restorative Yoga. She is an RYT with Yoga Alliance and teaches energetic classes focused around breathing, alignment and fluid movement. Michelle's classes focus on practicing acceptance and gratitude in the studio, while bringing the benefits of yoga into all aspects of your life and athletic endeavors.
Background
While climbing a mountain range in Argentina, Michelle came to the realization that she needed further balance and focus to become the versatile athlete she'd long wanted to become. Having grown up as a competitive tennis player and playing collegiately, she's long been passionate about athletics and fitness, continuing to feed that passion by escaping into the mountains and nature to hike and backpack. Yet she realized she wanted more than just that beautiful escape. Drawn to more than just the balance and strength obtained from practicing Asanas (poses), Michelle began studying the other seven limbs of yoga. It became a way to bring the peace she finds in nature to her everyday life; unifying her physical nature and personality around a core that is balanced and unbounded.
Why I Teach
To me, the best part about teaching is that the role of "teacher" is fluid. While I may be the one instructing poses and guiding in yoga, I am constantly learning from my students and through yoga we are helping each other be better, more compassionate humans. We're on a journey together and I find that not a day goes by that I am not inspired by the strength and beauty of those that make yoga a part of their daily lives.
Why I Teach Yoga
Yoga is a lifelong journey - one that everyone can partake in and everyone can improve from. Yoga is more than a way to strengthen your body or become more flexible, it's a way of life that provides a path for every chapter in our life. I love teaching yoga as I get to help students during this journey - the path of transformation through yoga is a beautiful and spiritual one and I am so grateful I get to be part of it.
My Teaching Style
I put an emphasis on alignment and breath - these are the building blocks of any strong yoga practice. Once your body feels the correct alignment and the benefits of purposeful breathing, the world of yoga opens up and becomes limitless. Our bodies are all different and the actual poses (asanas) of yoga will not be the same for each body hence my approach is placing specific emphasis on how to tailor poses to your body and ensure your physical longevity.

His love and fascination for people led him to The University of Arizona to acquire a B.A. in Psychology, where he volunteered as a Crisis Interventionist and Victims Advocate. He lived in the Himalayas of India studying and practicing Yoga everyday for months, and became an RYT with Yoga Alliance. In the jungles of Thailand he furthered his understanding of the body by certifying with the International Society of Thai Yoga Massage. Thrilled to now be in San Francisco, his background as a trainer and group exercise instructor allows him to challenge his students physically while his studies in India offer a balanced practice that is both meditative and insightful.
Why I Teach
I love teaching because I thrive on healing people which can take many forms. I feel truly blessed that I am able to transmit, create, or inspire a positive effect in other people.
Why I Teach Yoga
I teach Yoga because I believe it transcends all physical and mental barriers that people often see between themselves and others, allowing the practitioner to develop a sense of self that is united with the greater collective of humanity. After all, 'Yoga' translates to 'Union'. I believe Yoga, in the entirety of it's scope, is the highest instruction manual for how to live optimally in a human biological body while simultaneously acknowledging that the spirit which dwells inside the body is irreversibly connected to the Universe around us, and seeks to strengthen this connection. Plus it's fun and feels good too.
My Teaching Style
Being a Libra it's in my nature to find balance, and when I teach I aim to balance challenging physical movements that create strength and definition throughout the entire body with relaxing and restorative elements that allow the spirit to be reminded of its natural peaceful state.

Ramona found yoga as a way to balance her hectic life as a young attorney. First introduced to yoga in the 90's, she began a daily practice in 2008 to support her busy and active lifestyle. Ramona's love for the practice grew as she learned that the study of yoga, and with it the discovery of the mind and body, could last more than a lifetime. This led her to deepen her study of yoga through a comprehensive teacher training with Maile Sivert and Caroline Kelley at The Mindful Body in San Francisco. Benefits of Yoga
We believe that yoga is for everybody and can benefit everybody. In addition to the physical benefits of yoga, from increased flexibility and balance, and a strong, toned body, yoga makes you happier, increases focus and mindfulness, and boosts confidence. It improves posture while promoting joint, bone, and spine health-meaning less injuries , aches, and pains. Yoga also increases circulation and can help drop blood pressure, and in some of our more vigorous practices, can also serve as cardiovascular exercise, burn calories, and help you lose weight. Additionally, practicing yoga helps support the immune and lymphatic system, while regulating your adrenal glands and cortisol levels. Yoga releases body tension and relieves stress, giving the body the ability to relax and restore, helping you sleep better, and enjoy an overall higher quality of life. A Few Things to Consider:
Efficient and intelligent movement
Yoga incorporates series of functional movements that include full body, multi-joint body movements on different planes. It trains the body more intelligently and to move more efficiently in your daily life.
Builds strength
Create a strong and sculpted body. Increase strength throughout the entire body, including but not limited to the arms, back, tummy, hips, legs, and glutes. Because yoga its simultaneous builds flexibility as well, yoga creates a more balanced and optimally aligned body than traditional strength training alone.
Increases flexibility
Yoga helps to gradually loosen tightness in muscles (which are often developed from poor habits, habitual movement patterns, and other body imbalances) which will alleviate aches and pains while helping prevent injury. Being flexible allows you to move more freely and with ease in your everyday life.
Increases balance
A regular yoga practice increases inner body awareness and improves balance.
Improves posture
Poor posture can lead to back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. Yoga helps keep you properly aligned, helping you stand and sit taller.
Promotes joint, bone, and spine health
Yoga involves a wide range of full movements, which helps keep joint cartilage healthy and protect it against arthritis. The wide range of movements involving the spine keep the disks in your back supple. The weight bearing nature of yoga helps ward off osteoporosis.
Supports the immune and lymphatic system
Contracting, stretching, and twisting the body in yoga helps increase the drainage of lymph, a fluid in immune cells. This assists the lymphatic system in fighting infection, destroying cancerous cells, and detoxing the body.
Increases circulation & improves heart health
Movements in yoga increase circulation and help oxygenate your cells and tissues. In more vigorous Vinyasa classes, getting your heart into the aerobic range improves heart health.
Drops blood pressure
Studies have shown that people with hypertension have lowered blood pressure after just three months of regular yoga practice.
Regulates your cortisol levels
Yoga lowers cortisol levels produced by your adrenal glands. Excessive cortisol levels can compromise the immune system and have also been linked to depression, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
Helps you be happier & boosts confidence
Studies have found that a regular yoga practice can improve depression and increase serotonin levels. Yoga also works to both physically train the body, helping you look good and feel good about yourself, while realigning the mind to become more grateful and content.
Increases focus
Yoga teaches you to focus on the present. Studies have found that regular yoga practice improves coordination, reaction time, memory, and even IQ scores.
Alleviates stress
Stress is tied to a huge array of physical health problems. Yoga and meditation helps you learn the tools to quiet and refocus the mind, preventing the frustrations, anxieties, angers, and fears we often impose on ourselves.
Improves sleep
Studies have found that better sleep is another by-product of a regular yoga practice. Sleep is one of the most important components of our daily routine. Good sleep has been linked with better overall health, a smaller waistline, a better immune system, less stress, and of course, more energy and ability to focus throughout the day.

The Barre on Maiden Lane
Booty Barre
Developed by Master Pilates instructor Tracey Mallett, The Booty Barre® is a ballet barre based program which applies the fundamentals of Pilates and yoga with dance, helping to strengthen and sculpt the entire body. Unlike other barre programs, Booty Barre® does not rely on small isometric muscle contractions, which end up over working only a few muscle groups and ignoring the rest of the body. This can lead to body imbalances and even injuries. Instead, Booty Barre® incorporates more fluid, full-body, functional movement. Not only will you burn more calories with more cardiovascular work and see results quicker, but by exercising through a greater range of motion, Booty Barre® will help strengthen the body to prevent injuries, as it more closely mimics how we move in real life. Our Booty Barre® classes incorporate floor work, barre work, and mat work with small accessories including hand weights, playground balls, and therapy bands. Lose weight, tone the abs, legs, arms, back and hips, and as the name implies, The Booty Barre® helps create a firmer, higher, and rounder behind. All levels are welcome.
Barre Tone
Barre Tone incorporates the full-body movements of Booty Barre®, with an added focus on isolated toning and emphasis on form and alignment. Barre Tone uses slower, controlled movements with ankle and wrist weights, that are guaranteed to target all major and supporting muscle groups and will give you that intense, full body burn you've been dreaming of. Barre Tone is excellent for those looking for a results-driven workout with a little less sweat (ideal for those working out in the morning or mid-day of a work day). Barre Tone is also great for those of you who are newer to a barre practice or for those looking to brush up on their form. But don't be fooled by the slower pace you may feel your body burn like you've never had before! This class is a great on its own or as a complement to your Pilates, barre, or yoga routine. Refine and Sculpt your Body with Barre Tone. All levels are welcome.
GRGT Barre
This fun, high-energy, and results driven class combines high intensity interval training (HIIT) with the full-body, sculpting aspects of Booty Barre. In just 40-minutes, GRGT Barre will get your heart pumping and tone the entire body, while still moving with form and precision. Inspired by our ever-popular GRGTTM (get right, get tightTM) Pilates Circuit Bootcamp class, get the benefits of HIIT, including burning more calories and increasing strength, stamina, and agility, than with traditionally paced exercise. With our expertise and knowledge on correct, functional movement, this class is both highly effective and safe. All levels welcome.

Barre is high intensity, yet low impact.
It's easy on the joints, and helps prevent future joint wear, while increasing flexibility, range of motion, and endurance.
With small classes and attentive instructors, we can modify each class, making it suitable for almost anyone.
Our barre is effective for beginners as well as seasoned barre pros. You won't get bored with MLS' barre, helping you always stay challenged and motivated.
Our barre classes emphasize balanced training that targets all areas of the body
Including the arms and shoulders, back and hips, abs and legs, and of course, the booty.
By working with good form and correct alignment in mind, you can improve posture and reduce common aches and pains.
Barre is a great cross-training modality for other sports and activities, like running or cycling.
Barre incorporates exercises with full range of motion, and trains the body evenly, unlike other sports which are linear in motion and injury prone.

Stephanie was introduced to Pilates in 1997 through a dance program as a means of dance conditioning and injury prevention. She then went on to dance professionally with The Oakland Ballet and State Street Ballet where she continued to be an avid Pilates student. Stephanie experienced so many amazing benefits from Pilates she knew she wanted to eventually make it her career.

She then went on to dance professionally with The Oakland Ballet and State Street Ballet where she continued to be an avid Pilates student. Stephanie experienced so many amazing benefits from Pilates she knew she wanted to eventually make it her career. After relocating to Los Angeles, Stephanie received her certification through Body Arts and Science (BASI) in 2004 with Rael Isacowitz and Kristi Cooper White. In 2005 she started teaching full time at studios all over Los Angeles. Stephanie has been fortunate enough to work alongside physical therapists and with a large number of clients ranging from fitness enthusiasts to people suffering from various injuries and medical conditions. Over the years she has attended numerous workshops and has studied both classical and progressive Pilates. Stephanie also discovered Anusara yoga during this time. In 2009 she successfully completed an Anusara yoga training with Noah Maze. After 7 years of teaching in Los Angeles Stephanie is thrilled to be back in the Bay Area where she grew up. She draws on her many influences to create a fun, diverse, detailed, and challenging session. She is able to adapt the Pilates exercises to meet the many different needs of her clients including pregnancy, back issues, weight loss, fitness, and more.
Ellen
Certified Pilates & Booty Barre Instructor
Ellen first discovered Pilates in 2006 while earning her Bachelor's Degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She found it served as a perfect transition out of a vigorous dance practice and a wonderful complement to a very athletic and competitive sports background. Pilates helped her immensely with minor scoliosis and in rehabilitating a lower lumbar injury. She quickly saw and felt an incredible transformation in her own body, and knew it was the start of something big.
I teach because I love working with people. I love helping clients to create, achieve and surpass their goals. I have had so many inspirational teachers in my life, and I hope to fulfill that capacity for others through my work.
Why I Teach Pilates
I teach Pilates because I experienced such an incredible transformation in my body through it. I believe it is the best full body work-out that can complement every fitness modality and is accessible to every body. Teaching Pilates is so rewarding and I feel blessed to work with and help so many dedicated, strong and energetic clientele. To be able to be healthy, active and inspiring in my everyday life as my career is the absolute best feeling in the world.
Why I Teach Barre
I love teaching barre because it is such a great sweat! The energy in every class is so unique and to see the determination and strength in everyone's eyes is truly inspiring. Everyone comes to class ready to work and I love that everyone leaves with a smile.
My Teaching Style
I come from a very fitness driven background and really aim at working toward individual goals. My classes and sessions generally will push you to your limits while always looking for progression. I integrate my classical Pilates and personal training experience and create unique classes with energy and flow.
Lauren
Certified Booty Barre & Yoga Instructor
Kaley
Certified Pilates & Booty Barre Instructor

Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST)
More dynamic and effective than traditional bodywork, FST is a form of assisted stretch therapy that can increase your flexibility, reduce aches and pains, and improve your range of motion and athletic performance. FST targets fascia, the most prevalent tissue in the body which is full of nerves. Fascia is found around muscles, joints, arteries, veins, the brain, and the spinal cord. FST helps reduce pressure and release stored stress in the fascia, improving circulation and flexibility while boosting energy. Maiden Lane Studios offers Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) services at our Maiden Lane location. To Book an Appointment: Please call us at (415) 274-9940 or Book an FST Appointment Online here. Have questions? Please call us or email us at info@maidenlanestudios.com. FST is a form of assisted stretch therapy on the table that can help increase your flexibility, reduce aches and pains, and improve athletic performance while making your workouts more effective. FST is very different than what we think of as traditional stretching or bodywork, in that it is more functional and dynamic. FST targets fascia, the spider web like connective tissue found in, around, and between the joints, muscles, and ligaments. Fascia is the most prevalent tissue in the body and the health and function of your muscles, joints, arteries, veins, brain, and spinal cord are all a direct result of the condition of your fascia. FST helps to "unwind" fascia, which is full of nerves, reducing pressure between joints and the pain associated with it, while releasing joint-lubricating synovial fluid that improves the flexibility of muscles.
Clinic studies have shown FST can increase flexibility by up to 52% in just one session.
Athletes in a FST program have been found to recover more quickly between training sessions and gain an improved active range of motion than with other stretching methods.
FST helps with proper body alignment and posture, increases circulation and energy, and improves muscle, nerve, and joint function.
FST is a crucial form of body therapy, as there is no supplement or medication that helps improve the state of fascia in the body and exercise alone does not optimally balance, align, or improve fasci
Fascial Stretch Therapy Expertise
Fascial Stretch Therapy Expertise
Our FST instructors were trained by the founders of the Stretch to Win institute. These industry leading professionals have served as stretch coaches for three Super Bowls and three Olympic Games. A few of the athletes that they have provided FST services to include: Donovan McNabb, Quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles; Sanya Richards, 2004, 2008, 2012 Olympic 4 x 400-meter relay gold medalist and 2012 400 meter gold medal; and Mike Tyson, former undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion.
What to Expect
During a FST session, the therapist moves the body in undulating spiral diagonal patterns known as stretch waves, paired with traction to access the joint capsule, the deepest level of fascia.
Breathing is synchronized with stretch waves for greater efficiency and an additional therapeutic effect. This pain-free therapy allows your body to relax and receive greater benefits versus traditional bodywork, like deep tissue or Rolfing, that is often painful and where the body can become guarded.
Fascial Stretch Therapy is a pain-free, relaxing, and easy and convenient form of bodywork.
Clients stay fully-clothed and remain passive as the therapist performs the assisted stretches. There is no use of massage oils or creams. Clients will leave a session feeling renewed and relaxed.
Maiden Lane Studios offers FST in 55 minute sessions.
Note: We recommend arriving 10 minutes prior to your appointment to allow adequate time to prepare for your session. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in, such as workout clothing.

Brides & Weddings
The way a bride wants to look for their wedding depends on a number of things
the dress, their body type, current physical shape, and the time they have available to prepare. Maiden Lane Studios can help brides design the body they want for that very special day. The four key components to our programs involve strength training, cardiovascular exercise, stretching, and good nutrition.
The key to any bridal fitness program is to begin as early as possible.
Weight loss or muscle toning does not happen over night. However, we can create a program no matter what the timeline, but we strongly recommend that you begin early and finish strong.
Golf
The PGA understands the power of Pilates and yoga to a successful golf game, and so do the players. Help your game by improving your strength, stamina, flexibility, and focus.
The Golf Program
The golf swing is one of the most complex movements in all of sport. The advent of high-speed video cameras has helped reveal that power and speed are not generated primarily from the arms. Almost every muscle and joint in the body is put into action to some extent during a golf swing. Millions of dollars are spent each year on golf lessons in the United States alone. However, one of the biggest problems encountered by students is the inability to physically reproduce the techniques they are being taught; usually due to issues with flexibility and core strength. Only in recent years has it been considered that it was the golfer's body that may be contributing to their lack of success in implementing these modifications from their coaches. Many of the more successful golfers of today (both professional and amateur) have transitioned from mere golfers to athletes (at varying levels), maximizing their bodies' strength and flexibility in order to achieve lower scores. It's not about bulking up, it's about being smart about your strength and flexibility. It is the quality of the machine (the golfer) that we focus on, specifically the needs for stability, mobility, and strength.
PGA and Pilates
"The Professional Golf Association describes Pilates and golf as a "perfect match," and claims that Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam practice the method to improve their games and prevent injuries." - Livestrong.com
PGA and Yoga
"If you are looking for exercise that will help all aspects of your golf game, look no further than yoga. Practicing yoga can help you develop strength, stamina and flexibility - all useful elements for the golfer. It even can help with your breathing which could help you focus on the course." - PGA Tour.
Comprehensive Strength from the Core Out
Our approach is Comprehensive Strength From the Core Out. With a focus on Comprehensive Strength, we are able to help clients achieve a body that is balanced, aligned, and mobile. We focus on major and minor muscle groups, as well as their surrounding connective tissue (fascia), helping ensure that they work efficiently and in conjunction with one another. Comprehensive StrengthTM is also about understanding the 'mind' component of physical fitness. At Maiden Lane Studios, we believe that to achieve life-changing results from a fitness regimen, it is important to also train the mind to focus on using the correct muscles, with the proper intensity, for specific movements. This understanding of the relationship between mind and body is where true, Comprehensive Strength and efficiency in movement can produce life-long habits for healthy living. Every individual is unique, that's why we put each client through a series of assessments that will help determine the correct starting point, helping us focus on which exercises should be incorporated into their workouts. We end up with a tailored program that is ideal for the individual.

Exercising while pregnant may be extremely beneficial to your health and your well-being, providing mind and body benefits during your pregnancy, childbirth, and even beyond.
Exercise for pregnant women may be beneficial to those who have exercised regularly before becoming pregnant, as well as for those who are new to a regular exercise regimen. Pilates, barre, and yoga are all effective and suitable modalities for women throughout the various stages of pregnancy, each with a long list of unique benefits.
Pilates is a great form of exercise during part of your pregnancy to strengthen your pelvic muscles, increase shoulder stability, maintain correct posture, and improve balance during your pregnancy.
Pilates movements are mostly performed in a prone (referred to as a plank), supine (lying on your back) or side-lying position. Pilates exercises offer you the opportunity to focus on "growing your spine" and correct postural misalignments.
Some general benefits of exercising during pregnancy
Boost your energy and metabolism
Sleep better
Reduce pregnancy discomfort
Prepare for childbirth

Q&A With Alexandria, One of Our Expecting Pilates Clients
How has Pilates helped you in the pre-natal process?
Pilates gave me the core strength I needed to stay in shape during my pregnancies. I still remember how strong my abs felt when I gave birth to my son. I will always do Pilates.
How has it helped you in the post-natal process?
Pilates not only helped my body bounce back into shape within 6 months of having a child, but it also helped me identify areas of my body that needed extra attention.
How long have you been doing Pilates and why are you drawn to it as a form of exercise not only for pregnancy, but for your own personal fitness?
I started doing Pilates in 2007. As they say, "It changed my life!" My body has transformed into a longer, leaner, toner body because of my Pilates practice. I won't ever give it up because I love how it makes me feel and how it enhances my body.

GRGT Client Testimonials
Melissa, GRGT Bootcamp January 2013 Participant
I joined GRGT to change my exercise routine up a bit, but the 6 weeks flew by and when it was over I really missed it. The classes are really fun and upbeat plus it was great to go through the boot camp with the same group each week. The best part, which was totally unexpected, was that I lost inches everywhere and got a lot stronger!

What is a Pilates Circuit Class?
GRGT 6-Week Bootcamp is back!
We will be offering 4 different GRGT Circuit class times per week, over the 6-week period of October 7th through November 16th.
The GRGT Pilates Circuit involves high-intensity interval training and is aptly named after our studio motto (Get Right, Get Tight).
This class provides the benefits of Pilates with the results of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Research has shown that HIIT is a more efficient method than traditional steady paced exercise, as it burns fat, builds a healthier heart, tones muscles, and increases metabolism.
GRGT combines contemporary Pilates work on the various Pilates apparatus with functional body-weighted movements & plyometric exercises performed at maximum capacity.
The class includes a full body warm-up, circuit training, and finishes with Pilates-based abdominal work & stretching. You will work for 45-60 seconds at each station with 15-20 seconds of rest in between. Lengthen & tone, burn more calories, and improve your cardiovascular fitness with GRGT. All fitness levels are welcome, although we recommend scheduling a private Pilates appointment prior to the bootcamp if you have never worked on any Pilates apparatus. This is a 50 minute class and limited to 6 clients per class.
What is High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)?
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is any type of workout regimen that rotates between intense bursts of activity with short periods of rest. For example, alternating between 30 seconds of sprinting, then 60 seconds of brisk walking is considered HIIT. HIIT workouts are extremely effective in burning fat, increasing metabolic rate, and are more effective in less time. Five Benefits of HIIT in the GRGT Program:
Efficient
Research shows that with just 15 minutes of interval training done 3 times per week, one can achieve more progress than jogging on a treadmill for an hour.
Burn fat
The effect of the intense exertion in these workout not only aid in calorie burn, but can also amp up your body's repair cycle - meaning you burn more fat and calories within the 24 hour period after a HIIT workout.
Build a Healthier Heart
By pushing yourself into an anaerobic zone, your heart builds stamina and endurance, keeping your heart healthier and able to complete daily activities with ease.
Tone Muscle
Unlike steady paced cardio that encourages muscle loss, HIIT workouts preserves hard earned muscle tone. Most of the weight loss that comes with HIIT workouts comes from stored fat, not muscle.
Increase Metabolism
On top of the fat burning and preservation of muscle tone, HIIT will also stimulate your metabolism and increase the production of your human growth hormone (HGH) during the 24-hour period after a workout. HGH helps slows down the aging process along with being responsible for increased caloric burn. Win/win all the way around!
