All of our techniques revolve around providing consistent
Well-timed reinforcement for correct behavior, which creates a dog that loves to work with you and learns quickly. No harsh physical correction methods or force are ever used or allowed. (We train with our brain, not pain.).
Positive training achieves excellent results
As it is based on how dogs think and learn. You'll learn in small, easy steps in order to set both you and your dog up to succeed.
And we also think that working with your dog should be fun and full of joy!
We encourage play and treats as important rewards for your dog. This also builds the relationship with you.
Obedience & Manners Classes
Focus Foundation Obedience & Manners
Teacher: Mindy Cox; Age: ~5 Months of Age and up; Class Size: 6; Duration: 1 hr per Week / 6 Weeks; Category: Obedience / Manners; $185.
We want to help make life with your dog easier by allowing you to enjoy a calm and Well-Behaved companion.
Teaching your dog to understand your obedience commands is important but it's relationship-building that really counts. When you build communication skills and a better relationship with your dog, better manners and obedience will easily follow.
Focus Foundation is a 6-week class and is the foundation for all future training and is perfect for improving the behavior of your favorite pooch.
We will train or improve basic obedience skills and improve manners. We will work on attention, impulse control, and the ability to work around other dogs as well as people and distractions. We will help you build better motivation and confidence and discuss how to solve some pesky behavior problems.
Focus Foundation: for a Better-Mannered, more obedient pooch
Tired of your dog not coming when called the first time you ask?
Annoyed by a dog who drags you for a walk or doesn't seem to notice when you're talking to him? If your dog's behavior has got you a bit frustrated or embarrassed, or if you just want a little more polite behavior, this class is for you.
Living with an engaged and responsive dog is one of life's greatest pleasures! We can help you enjoy a calmer and Better-Behaved dog.
Building a Strong Foundation
In this class, your dog will learn to respond to you the first time you ask and you will learn how to change pesky habits like pulling on the leash and jumping up. A well-mannered, polite pooch is fun to live with! This class is also important before starting fun dog sports such as agility.
Here is what you will do in class
Improve the manners of your favorite pooch.
Improve basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, go to your mat, and come.
Solve troublesome problems such as pulling on the leash, not coming when called, and jumping up to greet.
Use impulse control games to teach leave it and other skills to decrease unwanted behaviors such as pulling toward lizards, squirrels or other dogs while on walks.
Get better attention and focus so your dog will respond to you the first time, even around distractions.
Teach your dog to work around other dogs and people, and build drive, motivation, and confidence.
We will show you how to utilize the power of the clicker to teach skills quickly using positive techniques.
You will learn to reward success, not punish mistakes. This results in a dog that has trust and confidence in you and who is eager to learn.
In the webinar/video (the first class, which is done at home)
We will teach you how to view the world through your dog's eyes, and practice mechanical skills to help improve your training and create quicker success. We will also give you information on how your dog learns which will help with your training in addition to providing understanding about how some behavior problems can be avoided or fixed. You will start on some lessons at home which will better prepare you for the fist class at Lucky Dog.
The Learning Enviroment
We want to provide a good environment in which people and dogs can learn comfortably and feel safe.
This is NOT an appropriate class for reactive dogs that bark, growl or lunge at other dogs or people. Your dog will be better served in the Reactive Dog class or in a private lesson. (Dogs that strain at their leash to get to other dogs to play are welcome in this class.).
Who is this class for?
This class is for dogs around 5 months of age and older that are fine (friendly or indifferent) around other dogs and people (no aggressive lunging or barking).
The Class Structure
Your first class is a video you watch at home!
The first class is an online webinar which you will view in the comfort of your home. This video presentation
"How Dogs Think & Learn (Build a Rewarding Partnership With Your Dog and make your training a snap)" will provide important tips and tricks to make your training easier, faster and more effective. You will be given the first of your fun homework assignments which will set you up for success on your first night with your dog.
You will be taught the skills and concepts needed to better understand your dog and how to change annoying behavior problems.
Our goal is to help make life with your dog easier and more enjoyable.

C.L.A.S.S., or Canine Life and Social Skills
Is an educational program to promote training focused on the use of positive reinforcement and to strengthen relationships between humans and their canine companions. C.L.A.S.S. is a three-level evaluation for dog owners to demonstrate the real-life skills of their dogs, as well as a knowledge assessment of the owners' understanding of basic dog handling and care.

And in the Ph.D. level
Owners must carry everyday objects such as a cardboard box or paper sack while walking their dogs on a loose leash, ask their dogs to back up, and have their dog demonstrate table manners during a simulated dinner session. Each level also allows for two "bonus rounds" that owners may elect to try or not with their dog.

Rally-O (also know as Rally Obedience) Emphasizes fun and excitement for the dog/handler team while providing an interactive approach to obedience.
Rally is about the most fun you can have doing obedience exercises with your dog! The exercises involved in the course will help build your skills as a handler and increase your dog's repertoire of behaviors. Praise, encouragement, and continuous communication are encouraged in this fun sport. We encourage novices new to the sport to sign up (your dog should be responsive and know basic obedience to begin learning Rally) as well as those that have practiced the novice movements and are ready to move on to new challenges.
A rally course consists of different numbered stations that are advanced to in order.
A sign at each station gives instructions to the dog-handler team, and each team must execute the station's particular task within two-to-four feet of the sign. Once the judge gives the command "forward," the dog and handler complete the course on their own without further commands from the judge. Handlers may not use treats or toys in the ring, but may do anything else to encourage their dogs at the novice and advanced levels except physically touch them or make corrections with the leash. Encouragement is allowed at the excellent level but handlers cannot pat their legs or clap their hands as they can in novice and advanced classes.
Signs instruct teams to go fast or slow, to halt (dog must sit at heel), to make turns and circles, to reverse direction, to do a sit-stay-recall, or to follow other basic obedience exercises.
Rally is also a great sport for anyone doing Agility with their dog as well. It helps create a better working relationship and partnership and your dog learns to look to you for direction.
This is a mixed level class working on negotiating a different Rally course and skills eash week.
There will be two choices of signs, one for more novice students and one for more advanced. You can choose which sign you want to work on at each numbered station.
This class is held indoors. The classes are an hour a week for 6 sessions.
Drop ins are available if there is room in class. The fee is $28 per session.
How does a Mixed-Skill class work?
In this class, by offering a choice of Novice and Advanced exercises at many stations, students of all levels will learn, improve and have fun!
Prerequisites for class
For any Rally class, your dog must be good around other dogs and people.
To begin the Rally class, ideally you and your dog should complete Focus Foundation or a similar obedience class.
If home-trained, your dog must have a good sit and down, be able to walk calmly on a loose leash at your side, and give you attention around other dogs and people.
Come Now! Building a Fast, Reliable Recall
Teacher: Mindy Cox; Age: 4 months of age or older; Class Size: 5; Duration: Two 1 hr. sessions. Sessions; Category: Obedience / Manners; $65.
Having your dog run to you when you call is one of the most satisfying aspects of your relationship with your dog.
The focus of this class is building a reliable recall even in the face of distraction. You will learn to prompt, reinforce and save recalls in challenging situations.
You've probably decided your dog's recall could use a little tune up.
Perhaps the puppy that wouldn't leave your heels has turned into an adolescent with selective hearing. Maybe your adult Fido simply "forgets" to come when she's occupied. Or recall is just one of those behaviors that never really took hold. In short, if you sometimes feel worried that your dog won't come when you really need him to, this class is for you. You can teach your dog to come every time you call, even from distractions. Join this class and start building this important skill.
Prerequisite
Your dog must be friendly to other dogs and people. This is for dogs 4 months of age and older.
In this 2-session class you will learn
The 5 rules that will help you to build a solid recall.
How to teach your dog to come even around distractions.
How and when to fade out the leash.
How to work at your dog's level to stay successful
Be proactive as needed to keep your dog safe and comfortable.
What is reinforcing for your dog and be able to use this knowledge to effect positive training results
How to apply class learning to problem solve approaches to real life situations
How to teach your dog one of the most important skills they can have for their safety and and your enjoyment of your relationship with your best friend.
Dogs Behaving Better! Building Impulse Control
Teacher: Mindy Cox; Age: 5 mo + up; Class Size: 5; Duration: 75 min; Category: Obedience / Manners; $45.
Building Impulse Control in Your Naughty But Nice Dog
Prerequisite
Your dog must be non-reactive (friendly or indifferent) around other dogs and people. This is for dogs 5 months of age and older.
Experience Level
Don't worry if your dog already has good skills; the class will be a terrific proofing and application opportunity for anyone who has already done some training no matter what level from basic to advanced. It is also designed to accommodate students and dogs attending class for the first time. The exercises are designed to be tackled from whatever experience & skill level each dog and human team is at when they take this mini class.
Begin to build some solid impulse control in the face of various Real-Life distractions
Does your wonderful dog sometimes make bad choices? You're probably considering this class either because your dog is generally a little out of control, or can behave better in certain situations.
Perhaps you have a social butterfly that loves to say hello but does it by jumping on everyone she meets. Or maybe you have an enthusiastic door dasher. Maybe your dog has trouble remembering what the word "Sit" means. Or perhaps it just feels like everything in the world catches her attention more easily than you can.
In short, if you sometimes feel like you live with a four-legged teenager that acts first and thinks later
Good news: These behaviors are annoying and difficult to deal with, but they generally mean you've got a dog that can't wait to be trained. Smart dogs with lots of energy can do great things when that energy is redirected.
In this single Hour-And-A-Quarter (75 minutes)
class you will learn:
How to work at your dog's level to stay successful
How to use a very simple behavior in the face of Real-Life distractions and build wonderful impulse control in all kinds of situations.
How to use this reliable behavior for building new behaviors.
How to begin creating impulse control and patience around food and the food bowl
An open door (no door dashing), various people / dog / object / movement distractions, and then finally work on greeting new people without jumping.
Rocket Recalls: Getting Your Dog to Come

Ideal Puppy Training & Socialization
Teacher: Mindy Cox, or Cheryl VanVoorhies; Age: -18 weeks; Class Size: 7; Duration: 1 hr per week / 6 Weeks; Category: Puppy; $175.
Why should all puppies go to school?
By five months of age much of your puppy's personality has been determined, so it is very important to begin a class prior to this age. Early puppyhood is a critical time for socialization and learning. This time will set the stage for the rest of your puppy's life. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to show your puppy how to confidently relate to other puppies, unfamiliar people, and strange sights, sounds, and events. Reserve your puppy's spot today in this limited-enrollment class. For pups 8-18 weeks of age at the start of class.
That cute little puppy got you chasing your tail?
Learn all you need to know to survive (and enjoy!) puppyhood, and watch your pup grow into the well behaved adult companion you look forward to. We will cover:
Basic obedience
To get your pup focused and following your direction using positive reinforcement and rewards (we never use scary or harmful punishment!).
Problem solving
To make short work of housetraining, and to stop your puppy from using you - and your furniture - as a chew toy.
Problem prevention
To ensure your pup grows into an adult dog you can truly enjoy– friendly, relaxed, well behaved, and fun.
Survive & thrive!
Off-Leash puppy play to teach critical Dog-Dog socialization and communication skills.
Important skills such as bite inhibition (developing a soft mouth). Your pup will learn to control biting by playing with dogs his age.
Appropriate games to play with your puppy that are both fun and teach your puppy self control.
Why should all puppies go to school?
You want a fun, easy - to - live with adult dog. That starts here
Before five months of age your puppy is much more open to experiencing new things, so it is very important to begin a class prior to this age. Early puppyhood is a critical time for socialization and learning. This time will set the stage for the rest of your puppy's life. This is truly a once-in-a-puppy's-lifetime chance to show your puppy how to confidently relate to other puppies, unfamiliar people, and strange sights, sounds, and events. He needs to learn to adapt to the world around him and feel at ease. It is crucial that this developmental stage is used wisely! Let us help guide you.
You want a dog that pays attention and listen to you and has gone manners.
That's why it's important that you continue to bring your puppy to school for the full 6 weeks of socialization and learning. We work on attention, recalls, sit, down and stays with increasing duration, distance, and distraction. We will also teach leave it, send to mat, polite greeting and discuss resource guarding, housetraining, mouthing, and other important issues. Socialization and off leash puppy play are always an important part of this class.
You want your dog to fell comfortable around other dog.
A puppy that is calm around other dogs becomes a dog that is easy to bring places or even walk in your neighborhood without issues. That is why puppy play is an important part of the class. During social play with other puppies, the puppy learns the meaning and the appropriate use of canine communication. Social play serves as the practice of etiquette in which the puppy learns the rules of social behavior—such as bite inhibition. Through social play, young animals improve their ability to interact properly with members of their own species, learn typical communication skills, learn to control their aggression, and form and deepen social bonds. Dogs do not have an innate understanding of how to interpret and react to all canine signals. Although puppies are born with the physical prerequisites for communicative signals, they must learn the meaning and the correct use of such signals. The majority of the puppies in class will integrate nicely into the playgroup. There may be one or two that have some difficulty and we will try to modify any fearful behavior in gentle, supportive ways. Socialization done correctly outside of class is critical in your puppy's emotional development. Here's how to do it right. Positive (not scary for your pup) exposure to new places, faces and other animals should continue well past the Ideal Puppy class and into social maturity at around 3 years of age. If the exposure is not reinforced your puppy will lose this critical advantage that began in class.
Eagar to start? Great! Here's what to Bring
These are some of the things you will need to bring with you to class.
Clicker
I recommend one that has an opening to attach a wrist coil so it's easy to hold and manipulate. We have clickers and wrist coils for sale if you need them.
Treat bag
These are nylon bags which either clip onto your pants or come with a belt to hang around your waist. The treat pouches may also have a pocket to hold the clicker. The best ones open and close quickly and securely with one hand so treats are quickly accessible and don't drop out easily and distract your dog. We offer good ones for sale.
Tug toys
Please bring one or two of your dog's favorite.
Plain buckle collar or martingale, or harness (absolutely no choke chains or pinch collars).
You may have your dog on a Gentle Leader Head Halter or in an Easy Walk harness in addition to a regular collar.
Soft, 6-foot lead (cotton webbed or soft leather are nice). No retractable leashes please.
Mat for your dog to lie on and to teach go to mat.
This can be a fleece crate mat, low-pile bath mat (with non-skid bottom is great), yoga mat, etc. It should more than fit your dog when he or she is lying down.
Water bowl (hey, learning is thirsty work!). We have a water fountain.
Stuffed Kong
Great for keeping your pup occupied during demos. Go to kongcompany.com/recipes/.
We have many of these items at Lucky Dog, including treat bags, treats, tug toys and clickers. Please come to class about 10 minutes early to purchase what you need.
You should wear a good pair of sneakers or comfortable shoes.
Our training techniques are completely positive; we use a lot of food incentives, combined with clicker training for many concepts.
Accordingly, please feed much less than usual before coming to class. Your dog will be more responsive if he is a little hungry. Also, you may want to cut down on your dog's food a little as he will be getting a lot of calories from his training treats and you don't want him to gain weight.
Small soft treats. Bring lots (a whole baggie full)!
The size of the treats should depend on the size of the dog, but in general, each individual treat should be no larger than your fingernail.
In a new, distracting environment, you want extra special, high-value treats.
You want small soft treats that are easily chewed and immediately swallowed. You can bring several different kinds in snack bags.
Some good things to use for training treats are string cheese, Low-Fat hot dogs, homemade liver treats, cooked chicken, liver, or roast beef, cut into very small pieces.
In addition, you can also bring "Pre-Made" treats such as Zukes, Buddy Biscuits soft treats, Lean Treats, etc.
Agility Classes
Intro to Agility (Levels 1A & 1B)
Teacher: Diana Johnson-Ford Kimber Chase; Age: one year and up; Class Size: 7; Duration: 6 1 hr. sessions; Category: Agility; $145.
Info
Participate in one of the most popular and fun dog sports in the canine world!
Intro to Agility is made up of two 6-week classes
Intro To Agility: Core Skills (Level 1A); Intro to Agility: Contacts & Weaves (Level 1B).
Agility is a fast-paced, super-fun game you play with your dog!
In this sport, the handler has a limited amount of time to get their dog to safely navigate a set of obstacles in a predetermined order. The obstacles can include jumps, tunnels, weave poles, a-frame, dogwalk, teeter-totter, and more! The dog must safely complete the obstacles in a specific order and within the time limit.
Success in agility requires proper training
As it is a game of physical skill, control, patience and, most of all, teamwork between handler and dog. In the upper levels, agility is a race against the clock, but accuracy in all levels is the first requirement.
Prerequisites/Skills
Needed to take these classes:
A prior obedience class, such as Focus Foundation, is strongly suggested and encouraged.
For participation in Contacts & Weaves (Level 1B)
You must have graduated from Core Skills (Level 1A), or your dog must have good trained jumping skills and you need to have acquired an understanding of agility handling skills from another source or class.
To play agility properly, it is very helpful if your dog can sit, lie down, stay, and come around the distraction of other dogs.
Your dog cannot be reactive towards dogs or people since short portions of this class may be conducted off leash.
Your dog should be friendly or indifferent.
Introduction to Agility
In Introduction to Agility: Core Skills
Dogs will be introduced to many of the obstacles in agility such as jumps and tunnels, in a safe and controlled manner to build your dog's confidence and skills. Owners will be taught handling skills and footwork to best communicate with their dog teammate.
In Introduction to Agility: Contacts and Weaves
The dog will learn how to negotiate the contact equipment with confidence (dog-walk, A-frame, teeter). The correct end position for the contact equipment will be introduced and shaped. Beginning success in the weave poles, one of the most challenging agility obstacles, will be an important aspect of the class.
Both classes
The skills needed to successfully negotiate the obstacles and the handling skills will be worked on weekly in both classes. Attention, focus, teamwork, and motivation will be practiced as the team builds confidence in an atmosphere that centers on learning skills while having fun. By the end of these classes, the dogs will have a good working knowledge of many of the obstacles and will be building up their confidence.
Beginning Agility is the Level 2 class after Intro to Agility or after Puppy/Adolescent Agility if your pup is old enough (a year and up).
In Beginning Agility, handling skills and basic control will be improved. Students learn to give timely commands, to provide consistent and smooth body cues, and to develop teamwork with their dogs. Handlers also develop the ability to switch smoothly from handling their dogs off one side to handling off the other in the middle of a sequence using techniques such as the front and rear cross. Other handling maneuvers may begin to be taught such as the 180, 270, and serpentine.
All of the equipment will be practiced at the appropriate height to build confidence in your dog
Including A-frame, teeter, and dogwalk, and contact equipment safety and behavior will be emphasized.
The dog and handler teams will continue to improve their skills and will become more proficient at simple combinations of obstacles.
Sequencing is performed off lead, therefore, your dog also must be able to sit, stay, down, and come on command, off lead.
Prerequisite- Intro to Agility, similar course, or instructor's discretion.
Successful completion of Intro to Agility or similar class, or at instructor's discretion
Familiarity with (but not mastery of) all agility equipment and readiness to refine your skills
Ability to work on the contact equipment at low height (teeter, dogwalk, A-Frame)
Is jumping at or near required jump height
You and your dog are beginning to work as a focused team
Non-Reactive dog (can safely ignore other dogs or people, or is friendly)
Novice Agility (Level 3)
Teacher: Anna Strait; Age: 1 year and up; Class Size: 7; Duration: 6- 1 hr. Sessions; Category: Agility; $140.
Novice Agility continues where Beginning Agility left off
We will continue to develop teamwork and increase handling skills. Sequencing is performed off lead, therefore, your dog also must be able to sit, stay, down, and come on command, off lead.
Handlers also further develop the ability to switch smoothly from handling their dogs off one side to handling off the other in the middle of a sequence using front, rear and blind crosses
The different come to side maneuvers will be practiced using obstacles.
Dogs will be taught to move ahead and switch as needed from handler to obstacle focus. We will work more off leash doing short sequences of obstacles.
Handling and agility skills such as front and rear crosses, reverse front cross, serpentines, 270s, get outs and threadles will be worked on to gain comfort and confidence.
Course analysis to understand the best way to handle a combination of obstacles will be utilized.

The class will build on jumping skills, obstacle discrimination, and distance handling skills. The dogs must be reliable off leash and under good control. Dog/handler teamwork is emphasized, not on just getting through a sequence but the way in which it is accomplished.
The class is designed to teach the handler and the dog how to gain confidence, accuracy, and speed. Performance on all equipment will be fine-tuned.
We will continue to work on more complex sequences and run advanced courses. Which often increases your dog's confidence and build speed on the course.
You will also develop skill on how to analyze the course.
This course will help you to perfect skills that are needed to be successful on courses at the Excellent / Masters level.
Ideas and assistance will be given on running these sequences that are more involved than those found at the Intermediate Level.

If you are competing in agility at the Excellent or Masters level (or practicing at that skill level), and you wish to continue to challenge yourself
Win more if you're competing, and grow into the best teammate possible for your dog, this is the class for you. Don't miss this awesome opportunity to be taught by internationally recognized handler and instructor, Barb Davis.
This class will focus on refining
Your current skills so your turns and crosses are efficient both in timing and on setting the dog's pathway so that the dog does not lose time with extra strides and wide corners.
This course will include international handling elements and progressive handling ideas to address these challenges.
Many of the skills attained from developing advanced moves, gives the handler additional tools to apply to Masters courses that are continuing to grow in difficulty.
The handler will also acquire skills to become capable in classes such as Premier or Master's Challenge as well as International competition.
Barb Davis will be teaching this cutting edge class
Barb is a 9 time National Champion with 5 different dogs and a 9 time AKC World Team member with 4 different dogs. She has continually competed internationally since 2000. Special Interest / Fun & Games
Nose Work Games
Teacher: Cheryl Vanvoorhies; Age: All ages; Class Size: 6; Duration: 6 1 hr. Sessions; Category: Special Interest; $145.
Nose Work classes work on an exciting concept that allows participants of any skill level to join any class.
Each class is a mixed group of different levels of experience which allows everyone to learn from each other plus there is less waiting to begin a class. Every search is personalized to the skill level of your dog so your dog always receives the challenges he or she is ready for. You can register whether you are new to Nose Work or you have taken one or more Nose Work classes and have a more experienced dog! Class size is limited to 6 dogs so don't wait to register to secure your spot in this amazing class.
The Nose Knows!
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to sniff, search and hunt.
The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed dogs using their noses to develop your dog's natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It's a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy. In this class we take your dog's instinctual skill and teach them to use it to play games with their noses!
Your dog's nose is about 100 times more sensitive than your own.
A dog can detect 1 teaspoon of sugar in the water it would take to fill two Olympic sized swimming pools. Your dog is built to sniff. And what happens in your dog's brain may be even more important. It's here that dogs are able to discriminate between smells and components of smells, which can be further enhanced through training.
Why Do Nose Work?
Provides mental and physical energy burn
Builds relationship between handler and dog
Confidence builder for the dog
Any human can teach it to their dogs.
Any dog with a nose can learn it.
NO prerequisites except dog must have a nose!
The most amazing enrichment for your dog.
Dogs LOVE to do this.
You can do this work anywhere in any weather.
Dogs get very satisfied and quite tired doing Nose Work.
It's Fun!
This is a sport suitable for just about any dog!
Just about any person and any dog can do Nose Work!
The art and practice of nose work is open to dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages, even young puppies and older, senior dogs. It has made basic search dog skills available to companion dogs, creating a new sport arena for dog enthusiasts. Not only has it proven to be a great activity for all types of dogs, but it is one of the most accessible activities for the widest variety of dog handlers regardless of previous training experience. No previous obedience work is required.
This is a great outlet for reactive dogs – dogs who don't usually do well in a traditional obedience class because of the close proximity to other dogs.
Each Nose Work search is done without any other dogs present. As long as the dog isn't aggressive toward humans (and not a resource guarder), he's probably a good candidate for Nose Work Games.
Nose Work may be started with young puppies (12 weeks and older).
Puppies are the best instructors – expose them and watch them, they are all natural. It is also appropriate for dogs of all ages including older dogs and those whose physical health prevents them from doing more rigorous sports such as agility.
The Lucky Dog Nose Work Class Guidelines
Dogs in class cannot be resource guarders (protective of toys or treats by growling or snapping if someone comes near).
One dog works at a time.
Dog socialization is limited (crated between runs- don't forget to bring yours, or rent one of ours! On cool days you may opt to leave Rover in the car instead of in a crate).
Searches are individualized for each dog. Dogs can search for their favorite toy or treat.
Dog-dog interaction is not an issue because all dogs are kept separate from each other and search individually when it is their turn
Which allows dog-reactive dogs to participate. Generally, as time goes on, these dogs may become less dog-reactive.
People-reactive dogs are not allowed in class for safety reasons. If your dog lunges, growls or snaps at other people, this is not the class for you.
Crate time
Dogs rest in crates or pens when not working. This allows them to focus, reflect and relax. (You must bring a crate to class or rent one of ours.
Important Note About Crating
You must be able to provide a crate for your dog and bring it to class each week, or you can opt to rent one of ours and have it clean, set up and ready for you when you come to class
Crates keep the dogs safe and secure between their times to search and allows them quiet time to process what they are learning. Soft sided crates are the easiest to transport. If you would like a handout on crate training, please let us know!
If your dog absolutely cannot be crated but can be tied and stay calm
We have one space in which to do so or, during cool weather, you may keep your dog in your car between searches.
Crate Rental
You can rent a crate from us for any or all of your class days. We will have it set up, clean and ready for you when you arrive. The cost is $15 per class but you will get a $5 discount per day if you rent for 4 classes or more. Please provide your own crate cover (a sheet or extra large bath sheet), and a crate pad or towel for your dog to lie on (if you choose).
How we increase the challenges to keep the games fresh and exciting for your dog.
Level I: Nose Work Intro
We are currently combining all levels into each class. In this innovative class you will teach your dog to findCheryl rewarding Molly's successful search something specific. For example, in the beginning, he will learn to find a bit of food or a toy in a cardboard box among 12-15 other boxes! Then, he will search for the scent of the toy/treat among household items, increasing difficulty as we go and as your dog's confidence builds. Some ways we make the finds more challenging include closing the flaps on the boxes, turning them upside down, hiding the box or household item inside of other items, and raise the elevation. Later the search is taken outdoors for a new experience for your dog.
Level II: Nose Work: Intro to Odor
We are currently combining all levels into each class. The dog is taught to search for a unique and precise odor (birch to begin) rather than just food. The dog learns to search for this odor and to ignore any other scents. The dog will learn to search in all kinds of environments for his primary reward, building strength in the search and having fun all the while. When odor is introduced, the dog has built confidence in searching and will have the endurance and desire to problem-solve because the hunting skill will have been built previously in Nose Work Games. In Intro to Odor the hides are made more challenging and additional environments and objects are added including an exterior vehicle search.
Level III: Nose Work: Advanced Odor
We are currently combining all levels into each class. Continuing where Level II left off, the searches become more challenging and an additional odor (anise) or two (maybe cloves) will be added. This level, as with all levels, are combined in one class so that your dog searches according to his or her abilities.

Would you like to have fun, but not in the sun? In this indoor class you and your dog will learn some skills that are very much like those used in agility, but with an easy, fun twist! Instead of jumps, your dog will learn to negotiate through hoops (see photo at bottom), eventually being able to be guided through them when they are set up in different patterns such as serpentines, figure eights, pinwheels and more. You will also learn how to communicate with your dog to send them through obstacle courses that may include tunnels, chutes, a mini teeter totter and a pause box.
Body awareness exercises will be done using wobble boards and planks so that your dog learns how to use his or her body more effectively.
We will also practice some recall and attention skills so that you two can work better as a team.
Since this class is very low impact, even healthy older puppies and older dogs can participate
As long as you and your dog can run, this class will be fun!

Fido Fun & Games: Urban Herding Edition
Teacher: Cheryl Vanvoorhies; Age: 5 mo + up; Class Size: 7; Duration: 6 1 hr. Sessions; Category: Special Interest / Fun & Games; $140.
This is another cool edition of the Fido Fun & Games classes! Don't wait to register or you'll miss it.
This indoor class (beat the heat!) is a fun 6 weeks long. Let the games begin! You can think of Urban Herding (also called Treibball) as herding without sheep. Instead, dogs herd exercise balls into a goal, using their noses to push the balls in the right direction. Best of all, any breed can do it. Try it, it's really so much fun!
We'll teach the basics of Urban Herding including distance control commands to get you started in this fabulous new dog sport.
High energy dogs are great for the sport – you do NOT have to have a "herding" breed. If your dog takes direction well (for example, if the two of you have tried your hand at agility, rally or obedience training with success), then the two of you will love Urban Herding.
This class combines Problem-Solving, fetching, chasing, and elements of tricks, agility and retrieving.
It's a blast - and a great way to engage your dog's body and mind while deepening the bonds of communication to improve your everyday enjoyment of one another.
Prerequisite
Your dog must be friendly toward other dogs and people and be under control around other dogs. Your dog must have some basic obedience skills, attention on you around other dogs, and preferably has graduated from an obedience class.
Want to spend time with your dog having lots of fun? Looking for ideas and activities? Then this class is for you!

Information About Registration
Class Information
Class One: Online Videos.
By watching the online seminar and homework videos you will learn about reasons for reactivity, gain a better understanding of your dog's body language so you will have critical information about his emotional state of mind, and be introduced to some of the tools and techniques we will use to manage your dog's reactivity. The link to view the videos online will be emailed to you. You may also choose to watch just the online seminar, or audit the class without your dog (see details below.) If all the working spots are full, this is also the best way to potentially get a spot should someone have to drop out at the last minute. It is critical before your bring your dog to class that you spend some time every day at home working on the first set of tools outlined in the videos.
Class Two
1st Class With Dogs (5 classes in total with your dog).
Classes Three Through Six
Additional classes with your dog. There are a total of 5 classes with your dog. Some will be inside at Lucky Dog and two may be off-site (including the last class which will be in Abacoa in Jupiter).
Equipment Check
After we evaluate the video you are asked to provide of you walking with your dog, we will determine if your dog requires new equipment.
If not, you do not need an equipment appointment.) This appointment is only for gear changes and is to be sure that your dog is wearing the right equipment to keep him safe and provide you with proper control on walks. Your dog's equipment will be changed or adjusted as needed. You will be given an appointment so that we can work with you and evaluate or change your dog's equipment. (Send in your video now so we can do an evaluation).
Suitable equipment may include a martingale (limited slip) or regular collar
A harness (regular or the more typically recommended control harness (such as the Easy Walk, Freedom, or Sensible); a head collar (such as a Gentle Leader or Halti). Your dog will not be permitted to wear either a pinch or choke collar in class. Bring what you have so that we can check the fit; or purchase the recommended equipment when you arrive. A regular leash is also required; no retractable leashes are permitted. We will schedule an appointment with you to accomplish this.
Required Crate & Crate Rental
You will be required to bring (or rent) a crate for classes 2 and 3.
A crate is an important place to keep your pet secure when he or she is not working, as well as a place for your dog to rest and process information. Ask us for our crate training handout if your dog is not familiar with being crated. (Feeling comfortable in a crate is a gift you teach your dog to prepare for travel or boarding, visits to the groomer or unexpected stays at your veterinarian.) Feel free to contact us with questions. See below about the option to rent a crate for the two days it's needed.
Crate Rental
Don't have a crate or don't want to shlep it? Crate rentals are available at $15 per night (for the two nights). Your crate will be set up, clean, and ready for you when you arrive. Please make advance arrangements; there are a limited number of crates for rent. (Want to make your dog more comfortable being in a crate? Set up a private lesson to work on this issue or ask for a handout).
How to audit the class (without your dog)
You may register to attend the 5 sessions without your dog and observe the class.
This also includes the online seminar and all of the class handouts and videos. You may want to register to audit if you want to be first on the waiting list for a working spot. Occasionally, there are withdrawals due to unforeseen cirmcumstances after the first or second class.
Fee to Audit(per auditor)$150.00
What to bring to class
The Head Instructor for the Reactive Dog Class is Dr. Lisa Radosta (www.flvetbehavior.com). The first night you will receive an online seminar as well as an initial homework video, both of which you will watch at home top prepare for your first night with your dog.
Items for Class
You will need to bring these starting from the day when you attend with your dog.
Collapsible Crate
Either soft or wire. You should be able to fold it up and carry it easily and your dog should fit comfortably in it. This is an important step; please start crate training early if your dog is not familiar with the crate. If your dog cannot be crated, please email Dr. Radosta at info@flvetbehavior.com. If you want to teach your dog how to crate happily, please ask for our handout. (Note: We regret that we do not have the space to store your crate for class but if you prefer not to lug your crate to the 2 classes in which it will be needed, ask us about crate rentals.) Crate cover- any cover will do including a sheet or a large towel.
Collar
There will be no pinch collars, shock collars or choke collars allowed in class. Dr. Radosta may recommend a head collar (such as the Gentle Leader or Halti) or a front-clip control harness based on the video you provide to us. If it is decided that your dog needs more appropriate equipment you will be given an appointment for a fitting.
Mat
Easy to carry and something that your dog will fit comfortably and completely on. A bath or yoga mat work fine.
Treat bag
Hinged or magnetic opening, as opposed to draw string, is recommended. You can purchase one at Lucky Dog.
Leash
6-8′ leather or nylon leash (no retractable leashes please).
Treats
Lots of really tasty treats cut into very small pieces (about pea size). Please bring treats that your dog will love even when he or she is stressed or nervous. This includes chicken, hot dogs, liverwurst, cheese, etc. Manufactured treats may interest your dog at home but will probably be ignored in class! Please bring lots of treats (3 snack bags full)!.
Recommended Resources
We strongly recommend that you order them now and get a head start on your understanding of your dog. It's especially critical to understand your dog's body language to be most successful in class. The first item is of the highest priority and we recommend that you watch it before class begins.

Getting ready: Behavior Questionnaire; Submitting your equipment video
Getting Ready for Reactive Dog Class
It is never too soon to begin organizing for the best class experience. Please submit a video a few weeks before class.
Behavior Questionnaire
If you have not sent in a behavior questionnaire, please do so now. Everyone needs to do this even if you have taken private lessons with either Dr. Radosta or me.
The Right Equipment Is Key
One of the important aspects of changing your dog's behavior is getting him or her under control while on walks as well as in class. The type of equipment you use with your dog while walking is critical to that control and your success.
In order to determine if your dog will need to be fitted with a new head halter
Harness or leash we would like for you to record a short video (30-60 seconds) of your dog walking on a leash in a quiet area. This is easily accomplished using your cell phone. Ideally, someone else should take this video. A front view and also a side view would be great to assess ease of walking and leash tension. After you record it, please share it so that we can view it and evaluate your equipment needs.
Please make sure that you and your dog are both on the video as we want to see how you and your dog walk together
Please note, the purpose of your video is not to assess your dog's reactivity on the leash. Do not deliberately cause your dog to show aggression.
Ideally, we would like to have the videos back to us as soon as possible and before the first night of class.
Include information about the type of equipment on your dog that is shown in the video because sometimes it's hard to tell.
How to send your video
You may not be able to email your videos because they may be too large. To avoid that, you can try to take very short snippets and attempt to send multiple videos by email. You can share your video to YouTube.com or Vimeo.com and then send the link to woof@luckydogsportsclub.com. You can opt to keep the video private so that the general public will not be able to view it. Both of those sites offer a free app that you can download onto your phone and which will then allow you to upload your video from your phone to the site. Alternatively, you can upload it to any cloud that you are using and send an invitation to both Dr. Radosta and myself to view it.
Tips
Here are instructions on how to upload to YouTube: https: //tinyurl.com/hcdrpts. If you don't want it to be viewed by everyone, list it as private in the drop-down privacy setting. This will allow you to only share it with the people you choose (like us!). Are you a beginner? Check out this helpful video: https: //tinyurl.com/y8klj24t. If the video is on your phone, be sure to first download the YouTube app and then it's a cinch to click "share" on your video and upload it to YouTube.
What You Need To Know About the Class
What is a Reactive Dog?
Is this class right for your dog?.
In this class we only deal with dogs that are reactive while On-Leash. For other types of issues, please contact us for a private lesson.
Reactive dogs tend to stress out their embarrassed owners as these owners try to keep passersby safe from their intimidating or noisy best friend.
This aggression is fear based and this behavior is called reactivity. On the other end of the spectrum is the dog that's too afraid to go anywhere and will hide, tremble, or whine. If your dog can't calm down within a few seconds, he or she is probably a reactive dog.
There is no longer a need to feel lost or confused when your dog becomes reactive.
This very special class will help you change or manage your dog that overreacts in new situations or with new people or other dogs while on leash.
Reactive dogs are not hard to spot.
While on leash your feisty fidos may lunge at people or dogs that get too close.
They may also bark loudly, and/or growl and some may even try to bite anyone foolish enough to get close.
The reactive dog can appear threatening to other people as he or she jumps, barks and stares.
In the Reactive Dog class and your dog will learn many things.
Your feisty Fido will learn how to feel more confident and comfortable in different situations and around other dogs and will gain more trust in you.
We will work to change your dog's problem behaviors and replace them with more appropriate behaviors.
You will have new skills to utilize in these Once-Stressful situations and you will relax as well knowing what to do and how to avoid or manage the triggers that were once unpredictable.
You will learn to read your dog and communicate on a different level.
You will acquire the tools you need to understand and handle your dog with confidence.
Learn what your Leash-Reactive dog is doing
Why he's doing it, and how to change it.Teach your dog to relax and trust and overcome fear and anxiety, the root of his or her reactivity.
Develop a better working relationship with your dog.
Learn how to decrease the stress in your dog and teach him or her confidence and focus. With decreased stress real learning can begin.
Learn calming and management techniques, coping responses, and emergency escape exercises.
Work with your dog in a controlled, supportive environment with a small group of dog owners who understand your issues because they share them.
Who is this class NOT appropriate for?
All of the behaviors listed below are best handled in a private session; they are not addressed in this class. Please contact us if you are not sure if this is the right class for your dog's issues. There are no refunds once the class begins.
Dogs whose only issue is guarding resources such as their food dish or toys.
Dogs that jump on people in a friendly manner. We can address that issue in a private lesson. That is not Fear-Based reactivity.
Dogs who are primarily scared of noises.
Dogs who fight with the other dog(s) in their household but are fine with dogs outside the home.
Dogs who have bitten a person. Dr. Radosta must do a private consultation before admitting your dog into the Reactive Dog class.
Dogs who are only a problem to visitors inside the home but aren't a problem on leash to people outside the home.
Dogs whose problems are not primarily due to leash reactivity. This class is designed to modify the behavior of dogs that react while on the leash.
People who are not willing to attend every class and work hard (daily practice) to effect change in their dog's behavior.
What Results Can You Expect?
The cause and severity of each dog's reactivity will vary, therefore each dog's individual improvement in class will vary.
Some dogs will show fast improvement, while others may take months after the conclusion of class to continue to improve. In certain cases we may also suggest private lessons to help your particular dog. While we can't guarantee your dog's progress, we will do everything possible to help you be as successful as possible.
Class setup to avoid Reactivity in class
In class, the dogs will be separated from each other by the use of visual barriers.
Slowly, as you gain skills and your dog gains confidence and starts to shed fears, the individual dogs will begin to work together from a decreasing distance. The counter-conditioning and desensitization training and handling techniques are personalized for each dog's emotional readiness and needs. The Reactive Dog class is initially held indoors. As the dogs and owners gain skills we move to a secure, fenced area outside and finally graduate to a real-life environment.
Testimonials
Results from this class, of course, will vary due to a number of factors such as the severity of the presenting behavioral problem and the dedication of the owner to consistently practice the exercises taught in the class. Here is what some graduates had to say about the Reactive Dog class.
What a great experience it has been for Titus and I to participate in this course–actually life-changing! I feel so much more confident in dealing with situations that used to petrify me!!
You are very special. Your expertise, professionalism and dedication is so evident!
It has been a year now since Bear and I came to Lucky Dog for our private lessons and then participated in the reactive dog class. I just wanted to say Thank You!
While I don't think he will ever be completely over his reaction to other dogs, I can at least walk him without too much of an issue when we do run into other dogs. My ability to handle him at home is much better as well. I am never without a treat. Applying the things I learned over the past year has really helped make our "relationship" much better.
Just sending a quick note to thank you again for helping us learn how to help Luna in Reactive Dog class.
Last night at Abacoa with the other dogs made me realize how far Luna has come in just 6 weeks. I can't say I wasn't nervous the whole time since she was closer to other dogs than we usually let her get on leash, but I was pleasantly surprised and extremely proud of her. We will definitely keep practicing and I know that she will only get better and better.
Hi Mindy and Dr. Radosta. I just wanted you to know that I am meeting new dogs whenever I can.
I try to only meet calm dogs to help keep my excitement down a little. I have attached a picture with me and my new friend Duke that I got to meet on a walk one day!! I was so excited, and he is such a good dog, I even got to play with him!! Now I look forward to seeing him every time I go on my walks. Hope all is going good with you both and want to say thank you for such a great class! I would love to try agility next, so you never know when you might see me again! Thanks again, and take care." Sailor.
Puppy Classes
Ideal Puppy Training & Socialization
Teacher: Mindy Cox, or Cheryl VanVoorhies; Age: 8-18 weeks; Class Size: 7; Duration: 1 hr per week / 6 Weeks; Category: Puppy; $175.
We will cover.
You want a dog that pays attention and listens to you, and has good manners.
You want your dog to feel comfortable around other dogs.
Positive (not scary for your pup) exposure to new places
Faces and other animals should continue well past the Ideal Puppy class and into social maturity at around 3 years of age. If the exposure is not reinforced your puppy will lose this critical advantage that began in class.
Eager to start? Great! Here's what to bring.
Plain buckle collar or martingale, or harness (absolutely no choke chains or pinch collars)
Our training techniques are completely positive
We use a lot of food incentives, combined with clicker training for many concepts.
Super Puppy
Teacher: Mindy Cox; Age: 4-8 months; Class Size: 6; Duration: 1 hr per week / 4 Weeks; Category: Puppy; $110.
Ready to engage your energetic puppy?
Want to work on Off-Leash attention and obedience skills? If you are a motivated owner, this 4-week class is for you!
This is a fun, high-energy 4-week class.
This mostly off-leash class is similar to Focus Foundation except that in addition to obedience skills we will continue to promote good socialization skills through off-leash play and interaction. We will work on sit, down stand and stay, adding duration, distance, and distraction, and using positive reinforcement (and the clicker for those that want to). Go to mat will be improved and we will work on training issues such as jumping on people. To provide mental stimulation for your dog (and have fun!) we may do some trick training in class. Attention training, impulse control, and games will be an important focus of this class.
Here is what one class participant had to say about Super Puppy:
"I really loved class last night. I heard a lot of positive feedback. I think that it is a must for older pups. I have taken many dog classes with my dogs and this is one of the best. I can't wait for next week!" -Lisa R.

Puppies will be introduced to sights, sounds, and techniques that are helpful toward building confidence without stress on baby joints. Clickers, treats, and toys will be used for focus motivators. Class will help build your puppy's confidence and strengthen your bond and partnership. The goal is to create a dog that is engaged, focused and motivated as well as one that is confident, well socialized, and eager to offer behaviors and learn.

Private consultations for dogs and puppies of all ages
We can help you find an effective solution to behavior problems and training issues.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by your dog's behavior?
Is your dog experiencing behavioral problems?
Are you feeling anxious about all the work involved in training your dog or changing your dog's behavior?
Do you want a more Well-Mannered or responsive dog?
For any of these reasons and more we are happy to provide private, One-On-One consultations, training, and behavior modification.
Private instruction in dog agility is also available.
Although we also provide training in traditional group class settings, we recognize that sometimes, for a number of reasons, classes are not always the best approach for everyone.
Whether because of busy schedules, dog temperament or behavior issues, or just for the convenience, we believe that these things shouldn't stand in the way of having a happy and well-trained dog that's a welcome member of your family.
In order to help you and your dog, we're happy to provide private training here at Lucky Dog or at your home or other appropriate environments — tailored to fit the needs of you and your dog.
We often recommend that everyone responsible for training the dog attend the sessions (unless you opt for Day Training, see below). If the need for private training is because of a behavioral issue, we can tailor a training and behavioral modification program for many behavior problems that occur.
Here are other things you should know.
We use no-force, positive-reinforcement methods of training backed by sound scientific learning theory. We have a Certified Professional Dog Trainer who will work with you to develop concrete and realistic solutions to the problems you are facing with your dog, then give you the tools and support you will need to teach your dog good behavior or improve obedience skills.
Issues We Can Address
Either through one-on-one personalized sessions or day training these are some of the many issues that we can help with.
Good manners skills (greeting people nicely, walking politely on leash, coming when called, and many others)
Housetraining
Crate training
Destructive behavior
Dashing out the door
Fear aggression toward other dogs outside the home
Jumping up on people

Building a solid and safe relationship between your new puppy or dog and the kids.
We can also schedule private instruction in dog agility.
Private Training is the Right
Choice if:
Your dog has specific behavior issues that are not addressed in a group class or make your dog an inappropriate candidate for group class
Your dog does not get along well with other dogs or people
Your dog has difficulty focusing around other dogs or in new places
You have a schedule that makes attending a group class difficult
You prefer the one-on-one focus of the trainer that private training provides
You are in a group class but want some extra help.
Your private consultation and training
includes several steps.
Discuss your dog's behavior & medical history
Discuss your goals for your dog in detail
Learn some basics on how dogs learn and positive reinforcement
Outline a behavior & training program
Work with you and your dog, teaching you both the skills needed to lessen problems and increase the reliability of appropriate behavior
Provide a written report of the session and handouts to help ensure your success as you continue to practice at home.
Day Training is another option
We can come to your home during the day and train your dog while you're away. It's the perfect solution for:
Puppy parents who are unable to be home all day.
We can help socialize your puppy, take him/her out to potty, train basic behaviors, provide play, exercise and attention.
Owners who recognize that their dog needs specific training or behavior modification, but simply don't have the time to devote to doing the training themselves
Anybody who simply wishes to have a Professional Dog Trainer train their dog for them.
Periodically we will meet with you so we can show you what your dog has learned and teach you how you can continue the training.
Family Dog All Stars Program
The Family Dog All Stars program is the perfect solution for families with kids between the ages of 4 and 9 years of age.
We will help you engage your children in learning the correct and safe ways to interact with that new puppy or rescue dog, building a long-lasting, happy relationship. There are lots of short interactive and fun videos that will keep your kids involved and you learning. Your puppy or adult dog is also involved in the learning process, gaining new skills to be a valued and polite member of the family. https: //luckydogtrainingclub.com/site/the-family-dog-all-stars-program/ to find out more about this wonderful program that is perfect and special for the whole family.

Class Supplies List
These are some of the things you will need to bring with you to class.
Clicker
I recommend one that has an opening to attach a wrist coil so it's easy to hold and manipulate. We have clickers and wrist coils for sale if you need them. Using a clicker to train your dog is optional but it is a tool that helps create new behaviors and skills very quickly.
(Please no drawstring pouches on the agility field unless it remains closed.).
Tug toys
Please bring one or two of your dog's favorite. This is great to relieve pressure or to get your dog engaged with you. It can also be used as a reinforcement for correct behavior. It is especially valuable on the agility field but useful in any class.
No retractable leashes, please.
Mat for your dog to lie on.
This can be a fleece crate mat, low-pile bath mat (with a non-skid bottom is great), yoga mat, etc. It should more than fit your dog when he or she is lying down. No matter what class you're in, a mat is great for settling your dog when he or she is not working. It is required for some of the obedience classes because we will work on building this skill (such as Focus Foundation and My Dog Has C.L.A.S.S.) and recommended for all other classes. In some classes, you may also be expected to bring a crate. It is highly recommended in the agility classes to give you the freedom to learn handling skills before trying them with your dog. It is required in Nose Work Games class (or you can rent a crate). (We do make exceptions for those dogs that are crate-phobic).
Water bowl (hey, learning is thirsty work!). We have a water fountain.
Stuffed Kong.
The size of the treats should depend on the size of the dog, but in general, each individual treat should be no larger than your pinky fingernail.
How often and quickly you reinforce is much more important than the size of the treat.
If you are registered for an agility class, please no crumbly treats.

If you are competing in agility at the Excellent or Masters level (or at that skill level), and you wish to continue to challenge yourself and grow into the best teammate possible for your dog, this is the class for you. Don't miss this awesome opportunity to be taught by internationally recognized handler and instructor, Barb Davis.
This class will focus on refining your current skills so your turns and crosses are efficient both in timing and on setting the dog's pathway so that the dog does not lose time
with extra strides and wide corners.
Barb Davis will be teaching this cutting edge class.
Barb is a 9 time National Champion with 5 different dogs and a 9 time AKC World Team member with 4 different dogs. She has continually competed internationally since 2000. Barb is a progressive handler and stays up to date on developments in agility around the world. Her handling style embraces moves that are somewhat natural to the dog, because if the handler can learn to do it right the dog usually comprehends it quickly.

Intro to Agility: Contacts & Weaves (Level 1B)
3/13/2020 - 5/8/2020 @ 8:15 PM at Agility Field with Diana Johnson-Ford.
Participate in one of the most popular and fun dog sports in the canine world!
This class is being held on the outdoor agility field.
Agility is a fast paced, super-fun game you play with your dog!
In Introduction to Agility: Core Sklls
Dogs will be introduced to many of the obstacles in agility such as jumps and tunnels, in a safe and controlled manner to build your dog's confidence and skills. Owners will be taught handling skills and footwork to best communicate with their dog teammate.
In Introduction to Agility: Contacts and Weaves
The dog will learn how to negotiate the contact equipment with confidence (dogwalk, A-frame, teeter).
By the end of these classes the dogs will have a good working knowledge of many of the obstacles.
Prerequisites/Skills Needed to take this class
A prior obedience class, such as Focus Foundation, is suggested and encouraged.
Successful completion of Introduction to Agility: Core Skills (or permission from instructor or Training Director)
To play agility properly, it is very helpful if your dog can sit, lie down, stay, and come around the distraction of other dogs.
Your dog cannot be reactive towards dogs or people since short portions of this class may be conducted off leash. (Your dog should be friendly or indifferent).

Focus Foundation
For a better-mannered pooch.
Classroom Structure
The first class is an online webinar which you will view in the comfort of your home.
This webinar, "How Dogs Think & Learn" will provide important tips and tricks to make your training easier, faster and more effective. You will be given the first of your fun homework assignments which will set you up for sucess on your first night with your dog. You will be taught the skills and concepts needed to better understand your dog and how to change annoying behavior problems. Our goal is to help make life with your dog easier and more enjoyable.
The last 5 classes are conducted Hands-On at Lucky Dog with your dog
Both spouses/partners are welcome and encouraged to attend class. Older teenagers are welcome as well.
FYI
If you want to start the webinar sooner, please let us know. We are happy to send the link as soon as you register for class.
The Learning Environment
We want to provide a good environment in which people and dogs can learn comfortably and feel safe. This is NOT an appropriate class for reactive dogs that bark, growl or lunge at other dogs or people. Your dog will be better served in the Reactive Dog class or in a private lesson. (Dogs that strain at their leash to get to other dogs to play are welcome in this class).
Building a Strong Foundation
In this class your dog will learn to respond to you the first time you ask and you will learn how to change pesky habits like pulling on leash and jumping up. A well-mannered, polite pooch is fun to live with! This class is also important before starting fun dog sports such as agility.
Sign up your dog that is age 5 months of age and older (though grads of our Ideal Puppy class may be younger).
Class size is limited to 6 dogs so register today! This popular obedience, focus, attention, and impulse control class is held indoors, and your dog attends beginning with week 2 of class.
This class - or one like it - is the prerequisite to Intro to Agility, Focus Skills 2, Rally, and Obedience/Performance Dog.
Class Duration
This class is an hour per week for 5 weeks at Lucky Dog plus your online seminar that you will view at home.
Prerequisite
Your dog must be dog and people friendly (no aggressive barking, lunging or growling). In addition, this may not be the right class for dogs that are dramatically afraid of most things in their world. Please call if you have any questions. There are no refunds after class begins.

What Is Clicker Training?
Clicker training is a powerful yet gentle positive method to train dogs and other animals.
This method enhances the development of a strong bond and respect between dog and trainer producing wonderful results. You can literally see how the dog is solving problems and working his way in the learning process step by step, at an accelerated rate. It helps create a THINKING dog who is eager to learn and engage with you.
The clicker helps train your dog up to 40% faster and its use is no longer needed once your dog learns the behavior, so it's a temporary tool.
Clicker training is based on Pavlovian reaction and conditioning.
The method uses positive reinforcement as the primary teaching tool and the clicker serves as a marker for the dog when you, the trainer, clicks at the moment that your dog is correct: "Yes! That was right". A reward (such as a treat) is given immediately after every click, which soon builds a positive association with the click. The sharp click and clear reward help the dog correct his behavior without the need for punishment or scolding.
Worried about the clicker mechanics?
Rest assured we will have you expertly clicking on the first night of class! Don't forget to bring your treat pouch and clicker or purchase them when you arrive. We will use them to help you become proficient and ready for training with your dog.
At Lucky Dog, we think the clicker is a wonderful training tool with which every good trainer should be fluent. We will show you how effectively and kindly it can help train your dog!

In webinar, which we include at no additional fee
We will teach you how to view the world through your dog's eyes, and practice mechanical skills to help improve your training and create quicker success. We will also give you information on how your dog learns which will help with your training in addition to providing understanding about how some behavior problems can be avoided or fixed.

All Classes - Puppy Classes
Ideal Puppy Training and Socialization
2/8/2020 - 3/14/2020 @ 10:00 AM at Training Room- South/Main with Cheryl VanVoorhies.
Ideal Puppy Training & Socialization Class
For puppies 8 to 18 weeks of age at the start of class.
That cute little puppy got you chasing your tail?
Learn all you need to know to survive (and enjoy!) puppyhood, and watch your pup grow into the well behaved adult companion you look forward to. We will cover:
Basic obedience to get your pup focused and following your direction using positive reinforcement and rewards (we never use scary or harmful punishment!).
Problem solving to make short work of housetraining, and to stop your puppy from using you-- and your furniture-- as a chew toy.
Problem prevention to ensure your pup grows into an adult dog you can truly enjoy-- friendly, relaxed, well behaved, and fun.
Before five months of age much of your puppy's personality has been determined, so it is very important to begin a class prior to this age.
It's important that you continue to bring your puppy to school for the full 6 weeks of socialization and learning.
We work on attention, recalls, sit, down and stays with increasing duration, distance, and distraction. We will also teach leave it, send to mat, polite greeting and discuss resource guarding, housetraining, mouthing, and other important issues. Socialization and off leash puppy play are always an important part of this class.
Socialization done correctly outside of class is critical in your puppy's emotional development.
Positive (not scary for your pup) exposure to new places, faces and other animals should continue well past the Ideal Puppy class and into social maturity at around 3 years of age.
If the exposure is not reinforced your puppy will lose this critical advantage that began in class.
Class Length

The Nose Knows!
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to sniff, search and hunt. The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop your dog's natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. For an overview of Nose Work https://www.luckydogsportsclub.com/pdf_files/nosework-article.pdf.
This is a great outlet for reactive dogs
Dogs who don't usually do well in a traditional obedience class because of the close proximity to other dogs.
Important note about crating
You must be able to provide a crate for your dog and bring it to class each week, or you can opt to rent one of ours and have it clean, set up and ready for you when you come to class (see below for more info). Crates keep the dogs safe and secure between their times to search and allows them quiet time to process what they are learning. Soft sided crates are the easiest to transport. If you would like a handout on crate training, please let us know! If your dog absolutely cannot be crated but can be tied and stay calm, we have one space in which to do so. Or, during cool weather, you may keep your dog in your car between searches.
Crate Rental
You can rent a crate from us for any or all of your class days. We will have it set up, clean and ready for you when you arrive. The cost is $10 per class. Please provide your own crate pad or towel for your dog to lie on (if you choose).
It's Fun!
The Lucky Dog Nose Work Class Guidelines
Dogs in class cannot be resource guarders (protect toys or treats by growling or snapping).
Dogs in class cannot be resource guarders (protective of toys or treats by growling or snapping if someone comes near).
Crate time
Dogs rest in crates or pens when not working. This allows them to focus, reflect and relax.
Levels
Each class consists of dogs at different levels of training and skill. These descriptions will help you see how your dog's skill level can improve and the challenges increased to keep the games fun for your dog.
Level I: Nose Work Intro
We are currently combining all levels into each class. In this innovative class you will teach your dog to find something specific. Guidelines for class: Open to all ages and breeds. No prior training is necessary. Dog must be people-tolerant and not a resource guarder (protective of treats or toys from people). Your dog must be crate trained (and you must bring a crate to class or rent one from us).
Guidelines for class: Dog must be people-tolerant and not a resource guarder (protective of treats or toys from people). Your dog must be crate trained (and you must bring a crate to class or rent one from us).
Guidelines for class: Dog must be people-tolerant and not a resource guarder (protective of treats or toys from people). Your dog must be crate trained (and you must bring a crate to class or rent one from us).

About Our Services
Positive, reward-based training enhances the bond between you and your pet.
We will provide you with the tools to build a more joyful and satisfying relationship with your dog. This clear emphasis on positive reinforcement gives dogs the freedom and confidence to think, learn and experiment throughout the training process. The dog's natural capabilities are encouraged and rewarded rather than being suppressed through the threat of severe punishment or harsh corrections. From your dog's perspective they can solely concentrate on the challenge of learning and trying new things rather than worrying about the consequences of doing something wrong.
Our goal is to provide a place where dogs and their people may play, train and interact in a clean, safe, and pleasant environment
while developing a positive, closer, more bonded relationship.
At Lucky Dog, we partner with dog training professionals who embrace our dog-friendly, positive training philosophy and share our goal of enhancing the dog/human relationship.
Classes are meant to encourage stronger relationships, build a foundation for good canine citizenship and create happy, social and well-rounded dogs - and have fun doing it!
As a member of APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) we share and uphold their philosophy
All dogs are effectively trained through dog-friendly techniques and therefore are lifelong companions in a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. Want to see what we are all about?

Anna Lee Sanders
Anna Lee Sanders: Anna first became involved in dog agility when she was adopted by a 6 month old Australian Cattle Dog mix named Timi Sue, who had a huge problem jumping. on people, on the counter top, over the doggie gate. You get the idea. In her puppy obedience class the teacher told her that she needed to find an appropriate outlet for this pups "bad" behavior, and an agility team was born! n her first year, Anna and Timi Sue won the award for best dog in their class at the state tournament (Dog Agility Competition of Florida) and were able to claim that title again in 2012. Anna has had the chance to train under some of the best teachers in the world, and continues to grow and learn from the best. In the non-dog portion of her life, Anna has been teaching Pilates and yoga, both one-on-one and in a class setting, since 2003. From anatomy and physiology, to biomechanics, to performance psychology and motivation, she has found that people and dogs mostly function in the same way, so being a teacher of people has given her unique insights into being a teacher of dogs. Anna is now also owned by a black lab, Mr. Pickles, who is teaching her all kinds of new behaviors! They are curently competing successfully in agility.

Obedience Training
All of the classes in our family dog program are geared towards teaching you how to help your dog become a fun, well behaved and well-adjusted family pet.
Basic manners and obedience are emphasized using dog friendly methods. No choke chains or pinch collars are used. You will learn how to "think dog". We will help you avoid the most common problems and prevent the most common bad habits. Each session consists of one class once weekly for six weeks.
Our goal in all of our classes is to help create a lifelong friend in your dog by making your dog more obedient, confident, well-mannered and more enjoyable to be around.
Your dog will become a more well-behaved and well-adjusted family pet. Our focus is on training you to train your dog with respect, consistency and trust. Teaching your dog manners strengthens the bond between you both and through better communication you'll have a lifetime of companionship. We will teach you how to build rapport with your dog using positive, reward based training methods. These methods foster trust and learning. No punishment, no jerking.
Obedience Classes
Focus Foundation
Learn the basic obedience and communication skills needed to build a better relationship with your dog, or to start competitive dog sports.
This class is the foundation for all future training and is perfect for improving the manners of your favorite pooch. It will increase communication and awareness between you and your dog. We will train or improve basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, come and no jumping. Some of the skills we will cover include attention, ability to work around other dogs as well as people and distractions, drive and motivation, and confidence. The focus of the class is on improving manners, gaining skills, and increasing confidence to build a more enjoyable relationship. We utilize clicker training in this class.
This class is a prerequisite to Intro to Agility as well as a great prelude to any obedience class.
At the completion of Focus Foundation the handler may be able to
Walk on a loose leash with the dog at the handler's side. Maintain Sit/Stay and Down/Stay on command for 30 seconds. Come when called on cue off-leash with some degree of distraction from a distance of 20 feet. Leave a treat within reach until released to take it. Learn to pay attention and "watch" you. Improve manners such as issues with jumping up.
Agility Training
What is agility?
Well, it's about the most fun a dog and owner can have together!
In the sport of agility, the handler has a limited amount of time to get their dog to safely navigate a set of obstacles in a predetermined order. The obstacles can include jumps, tunnels, a chute, weave poles, A-frame, dog walk, teeter-totter, and more! The dog must safely complete the obstacles in a specific order and within the time limit.
Success in agility requires proper training
s it is a game of physical skill, control, patience and, most of all, teamwork between handler and dog. Agility is a race against the clock, but accuracy is the first requirement.
Our philosophy is that a great agility team is built upon a solid foundation of basic skills.
Using positive training techniques and emphasizing play, we take time at the start of your agility career to build these skills. Once the basic foundation skills are in place, we move on to equipment and handling skills. Overlaying all this is our desire to help you build a great relationship with your dog, where You will be the ultimate reward and agility becomes the ultimate game your dog can play with you.
Agility Classses
This class is designed for puppies 5 months to 1 year of age. The class meets one day a week for approximately one hour. Classes are limited to 7 puppies. Dogs will need to have a crate, buckle collar or gentle leader, a 6 ft. leash (nylon or leather), and lots of tiny yummy treats (don't feed dinner before class)! The class will focus on building a positive working relationship with your puppy using play, toys, and lots of treats. Prerequisite: graduation from Ideal Puppy class (or similar in another school) or obedience class such as Focus Foundation; or approval from instructor or Training Director. Other puppy agility classes will follow this to continue to improve your young dog's agility skills.
Focus Foundation
Learn the basic obedience and communication skills needed to build a better relationship with your family dog or to start competitive dog sports such as agility and rally. This class is the foundation for all future training. It will increase communication and awareness between your dog and you. Some of the skills we will cover include attention, some off leash control, ability to work around other dogs as well as people and distractions, drive and motivation, confidence and basic obedience such as sit, down, stay and come. We will train or improve basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, come and no jumping. Other topics covered include: heel and side position, toy drive, and motivation. The focus of the class is on improving manners, gaining skills, and increasing confidence to build a more enjoyable relationship and become an effective team. This class is a prerequisite to Intro to Agility as well as a great prelude to other obedience classes.
Intro to Agility
In this class dogs will be introduced to many of the obstacles in agility in a safe and controlled manner. The skills needed to successfully negotiate the obstacle and the handling skills will be worked on weekly. Attention, focus and motivation will be practiced as the team builds confidence in an atmosphere that centers on having fun. By the end of this class the dogs will have a good working knowledge of many of the obstacles (the a-frame, teeter and the dogwalk will not be completed but we will begin shaping correct contact skills). (Prerequisite - Focus Foundation, or Puppy II, or Obedience I).
Beginning Agility (formerly called Agility Level I)
In this class handling skills and basic control will be improved. Students learn to give timely commands, to provide consistent and smooth body cues, and to develop teamwork with their dogs. The rest of the equipment, specifically the contact obstacles, will be taught including, a-frame, dog-walk, teeter. Different handling maneuvers such as front and rear cross, post turns, get outs, and come to side, will be taught and practiced. The dog and handler teams will continue to improve their skills and will become more proficient at simple combinations of obstacles. (Prerequisite - Intro to Agility).
Novice Agility (formerly called Agility Level II)
Novice Agility continues where Beginner left off. We will continue to develop teamwork and increase handling skills. Sequencing is performed off lead, therefore, your dog also must be able to sit, stay, down, and come on command, off lead. Handlers also develop the ability to switch smoothly from handling their dogs off one side to handling off the other in the middle of a sequence using front and rear crosses. The different come to side maneuvers will be practiced using obstacles. Dogs will be taught to move ahead and switch as needed from handler to obstacle focus. We will work more off leash doing short sequences of obstacles. Handling and agility skills such as front and rear crosses, serpentines, 270s, get outs and threadles will be worked on to gain comfort and confidence.
Intermediate Agility (formerly called Agility Level III)
This class is designed to advance your skills and to prepare you and your dog for competition, if desired. The dogs must be reliable off leash and under good control. Handling skills and combinations will be emphasized. Obstacle skills and team communication will continue to be improved and strengthened, as will speed and reliablility. Distance performance will be improved and longer sequences will be done to work on specific skills to better the performance of the dog and handler. Contact equipment performance will be practiced and improved including two-on-two-off and/or running contacts.
Advanced/Masters Handling and Skills
The theme of these sessions will vary and the classes will teach a variety of different skills and handling maneuvers. Some topics may include distance work, perfecting weaves or contacts, improvement of rear and front crosses, obstacle discrimination, distance work, etc. Competition courses will be set up for a variety of handling challenges. Learning how to walk a course and figure out how to best run it will be emphasized. You will be faced with and learn to handle all of the challenges seen in competition and gain confidence, speed, distance, and polish.
Sequencing
This class is designed to improve specific handling skills each session using short combinations of obstacles. Whether it is front or rear crosses, serpentines or threadles, better contacts, 180 degree and 270 degree turns, speed, distance, or any other skill, course sequences will be set up to challenge and instruct. The ability to "read" a given sequence and determine which handling techniques to utilize to ensure the cleanest, most efficient path for the dog, is the single biggest challenge for the handler. Practice and guidance in working through sequences provide the handler with exposure to the many varieties of obstacle combinations, and experience in applying all the available handling techniques.
Agility Run Thrus (Fun Runs)
Each session a different course is set up so you can practice your handling skills. Do the entire course or work on a section at a time. This is a great opportunity to polish up your skills in preparation for showing or to give you a new place to work your dog. We will have a novice course nested with an excellent course.
Skills Reinforcement
Waiting for the next level class to begin but don't want to lose the skills you have learned? One night a week you are welcome to use the equipment to hone your skills and keep practicing. An instructor will be on hand to offer suggestions and feedback. Mostly appropriate for beginner and novice handlers.
Puppy Agility Fun!
Take advantage of your puppy's natural curiosity and abundant energy to introduce him or her to the fun sport of agility! This class will focus on some fundamentals of agility using puppy games that will utilize targeting, wobble boards, focus and basic obedience skills. Puppies will be introduced to sights, sounds, and techniques that are helpful toward building confidence without stress on baby joints. Clickers, treats and toys will be used for focus motivators. Class will help build your puppy's confidence and strengthen your bond and partnership. The goal is to create a dog that is engaged, focused and motivated as well as one that is confident, well socialized, and eager to offer behaviors and learn. Some goals of the class include: Reliable & fast recalls, sit/down stays; Building drive & focus; Toy motivation; Crate games; Surface desensitization (things that move, make noise and are elevated; hind end awareness); Introduction to some agility equipment (focusing on familiarization and confidence building initially then shifting to obstacle performance).
Puppy Training
Why should all puppies go to school?
Why should all puppies go to school? By five months of age much of your puppy's personality has been determined. Early puppyhood is a critical time for socialization and learning. This time will set the stage for the rest of your puppy's life. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to show your puppy how to confidently relate to other puppies, unfamiliar people, and strange sights, sounds, and events. It is crucial that this developmental stage is used wisely! Using a positive approach, we focus on training for the pet and companion dog with the emphasis on reliable responses.
Socialization
Socialization is an important aspect of class. We strongly advocate proper, positive socialization experiences for your puppy. Take your pup to as many different places as possible but don't overwhelm your pup, especially shy ones. Never force your puppy to interact; we want your puppy to feel safe in every situation and with every interaction. How your puppy learns to perceive the world now influences his adult temperament.
In class you will learn to teach your dog to come when called, to follow from a distance, go to his or her mat, to sit, down, and stay, and practice impulse control.
Plus learn how to deal with all of those normal natural "doggie behaviors"; barking, chewing, jumping up, biting or mouthing, and house soiling will be discussed.
Useful information about common problems and concerns
Useful information about common problems and concerns that you may have about your puppy's behavior will be provided in our classes. We will begin to teach you, the owner, how to teach your puppy. Puppies will be acclimated to other individuals, things and situations. You will learn how to teach a puppy to sit and take things gently from your hand as well as play pass the puppy to get your little tyke used to gentle handling of different body parts (great for drying dirty paws and cleaning ears!). We'll also discuss preventing resource guarding problems as well as destructive chewing and getting on furniture. Upon graduation your puppy will be well socialized and he/she will be well on their way to having established great manners for life. There are typically only about 8 puppy participants per instructor in each session. Your puppy must be between 8 and 20 weeks at the start of class to attend Ideal Puppy Training & Socialization. Please bring a 6 foot leash, a flat collar or Halti/Gentle Leader, a mat, and a tug toy. Bring a water bowl as well. Treats of choice are soft training treats and your puppy's kibble (set aside from a meal). Cut the training treats into very small pieces as we will be using a large quantity! It's best to bring a slightly hungry puppy to class.
What about vaccines?
What about vaccines? Should I be worried if my puppy does not have all of her shots? My vet says not to sign up until my puppy is older! "Puppies begin learning at birth and their brains appear to be particularly responsive to learning and retaining experiences that are encountered during the first 13 to 16 weeks after birth. This means that breeders, new puppy owners, veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists have a responsibility to assist in providing these learning/socialization experiences with other puppies/dogs, with children/adults and with various environmental situations during this optimal period from birth to 16 weeks. To take full advantage of this early special learning period, many veterinarians recommend that new owners take their puppies to puppy socialization classes, beginning at 8 to 9 weeks of age. At this age they should have (and can be required to have) received a minimum of their first series of vaccines for protection against infectious diseases. Experience and epidemiologic data support the relative safety and lack of transmission of disease in these puppy socialization classes. In fact, the risk of a dog dying because of infection with distemper or parvo disease is far less than the much higher risk of a dog dying (euthanasia) because of a behavior problem. Many veterinarians recognize that this special sensitive period for learning is the best opportunity we have to influence behavior for dogs and the most important and longest lasting part of a total wellness plan".
Adult Dog & Puppy Classes
The Ideal Puppy class is designed for puppies 8 weeks to 18 weeks of age. The class meets one day a week for one hour for 6 weeks. Classes are limited to 8 puppies. The age range for the other puppy classes, such as Super Puppy and Puppy Agility, varies. The Adult Dog obedience classes such as Focus Foundation is for dogs that are about 5 months of age and older and are dog-friendly and people-friendly.
Ideal Puppy Training & Socialization
This is for young puppies approximately 8-18 weeks old at the start of class. Class priorities are teaching bite inhibition (so your puppy develops a soft mouth), socializing your puppy to people (especially children, men, and strangers) and other dogs, and teaching basic manners such as sit, down, stay, and come. Early intervention focused on early socialization and behavior is the key to a happy lifelong relationship with your dog. Shape behavior using early intervention and education. Your pup will learn to control biting by playing with dogs his age. It's important that your puppy learns to be comfortable in strange settings and situations and to adapt to the world around him and feel at ease with other dogs and people. We will cover basic manners and preventing bad habits and behavior problems. We will introduce basic obedience such as sit, down, come, don't touch and follow. We will also discuss important things like grooming, house training, and socialization. We will show you good games to play with your puppy that are both fun and teach your puppy self control.
Focus Foundation
This class is for dogs five months and older. This class emphasizes basic control, focus and attention. First, teach your pup to want to give you attention, even with distractions. When you have that most important behavioral piece, the learning really begins! We will work on basic obedience skills such as walking on a loose leash, sit, down, stay, no jumping, and coming when called.
Super Puppy
This 4-week class is for graduates of Ideal Puppy (or similar) and are 5 to 12 months of age. Your pup must be friendly towards people and other dogs and have good play skills. This class is similar to Focus Foundation and Adolescent Dog except that we will also continue to promote good socialization skills through off-leash play and interaction (the skills learned in Ideal Puppy). We will work on sit, down stand and stay, adding duration, distance, and distraction, and using positive reinforcement (and the clicker for those that want to). Walking on a loose leash will be improved and we will work on training issues such as jumping on people. To provide mental stimulation for your dog (and have fun!) we will do some trick training in class. Attention exercises will be an important focus of this class as well.

Nose Work Games
Nose Work offers a chance for dogs and dog owners to get into scent work in a low-key, fun, positive-only manner
the way Rally-O is a relaxed version of obedience competition. Basically, if your dog has a nose, he can play this sport.
Nose work involves training your dog to search for three scents: Birch, anise, and clove.
But before you get that far, you begin with easy, motivating - level searches for a favorite toy or treat. As your dog becomes proficient, the search challenges are increased. Aside from advancing levels of classes and actual competitions, this is a sport you can easily play in your yard, or anywhere.
Defying its newness, this sport is spreading fast, with classes, workshops, and practice groups mushrooming around the country.
The sport is the brainchild of three Southern California dog trainers all experienced in detection work, including search and rescue.
Who can benefit from Nose Work?
Who can benefit?
Nose work is excellent mental stimulation for dogs and fun for you, too, because it's designed to be easy to get started on. Unlike agility or flyball, it isn't physically strenuous. Nose Work is a great activity for shy or reactive dogs because each dog works on his own with his handler, even in a group class. And it's perfect for all ages of dogs and even for dogs with physical disabilities such as blindness.

What is a Reactive Dog?
Is this class right for your dog?
Reactive dogs are not hard to spot.
While on leash your feisty fidos may lunge at people or dogs that get too close. They may also bark loudly, and/or growl and some may even try to bite anyone foolish enough to get close. The reactive dog can appear threatening to other people as he or she jumps, barks and stares.
In the Reactive Dog class you will
In class, the dogs will be separated from each other by the use of visual barriers. This is a 6-week class. The initial class is for owners only (no dogs).
Acquire the tools you need to understand and handle your dog with confidence.
Learn what your leash-reactive dog is doing, why he's doing it, and how to change it.
Teach your dog to relax and trust and overcome fear and anxiety, the root of his or her reactivity.
Who is the Reactive Dog class Not appropriate for?
All of the behaviors listed below are best handled in a private session; they are not addressed in this class.
Dogs whose only issue is guarding resources such as their food dish or toys.
Dogs that jump on people in a friendly manner. We can address that issue in a private lesson. That is not fear-based reactivity.
Dogs who are primarily scared of noises.

Note about equipment
You will be required to bring a crate to classes 2, 3 and 4.
Crate Rental
ilable at $10 per night. Your crate will be set up, clean, and ready for you when you arrive. Please make advance arrangements; there are a limited number of crates for rent. (Want to make your dog more comfortable being in a crate? Set up a private lesson to work on this issue).
Rally Training
By the end of the Lucky Dog training class, you and your dog will know how to perform all the exercises for novice Rally, and know how to read and complete a variety of Rally courses. In this class you will gain the skills to be able to pass a Rally Novice trial. The teaching method is at Lucky Dog is positive reinforcement. Whether you are interested in competing for Rally titles, or just want to try something new and fun with your dog, this is the sport for you! You are allowed to talk to and praise your dog in the rally ring! Rally is the place to build a relationship with your dog and refine your communication with your four-legged teammate.
Rally obedience, or "Rally-O" as it has been termed by enthusiasts, is a fun obedience activity that combines elements of obedience and agility.
It is more relaxed than precision competitive obedience, focusing instead on attitude and enthusiasm, while the variety of exercises and courses allows you to show off your versatility and teamwork.
As in agility, courses are designed by the judge and are different in every trial.
Exhibitors receive a course map from the judge and can walk the course without their dogs prior to the start of the class. Judges design their courses by choosing from more than four dozen stations that direct handlers and dogs to perform specific exercises.
Rally emphasizes fun and excitement for the dog/handler team while providing an interactive approach to obedience.
The focus is on teamwork, communication and fun, rather than precision. The exercises involved in the course will help build your skills as a handler and increase your dog's repertoire of behaviors. Praise, encouragement, and continuous communication are permitted in this sport.
Rally Classes
Rally Mixed-Skill Levels
At this time we are offering mixed-skill Rally classes. We combine novice and advanced by offering a choice of signs of different skills at many stations.
Rally Novice
Rally-O is a fun obedience activity that combines elements of obedience and agility. By the end of this class, you and your dog will know how to perform the 31 exercises for novice Rally, and know how to read and complete a variety of Rally courses. In this class you will gain the skills to be able to pass a Rally Novice trial. The teaching method is positive reinforcement. Whether you are interested in competing for Rally titles, or just want to try something new and fun with your dog, this is the sport for you! At the conclusion of this class, the dog and handler team will be able to move continuously through a Rally course of 10-20 signs with the dog at the handler's left side. At each numbered sign they will perform the indicated exercise then move to the next sign. Unlimited communication is encouraged - the handler can talk to the dog and give multiple commands and signals. For this class you will need: a flat buckle collar or a slip collar and a 4-ft or 6-ft lead (no flexi leads, please), a treat bag full of treats (bring lots and lots, more than you think you need; be sure not to feed your dog dinner!), and comfortable shoes (you're going to do some walking!). (Prerequisite - Obedience I or equivalent).
Rally Advanced
We will continue to work on and perfect the skills taught in Rally I. This is a class for those who have completed Rally I and are ready to move into the Rally Advanced ring. Performance is encouraged off leash and includes jumps. Satisfactory completion should enable the team to earn an AKC Rally Advanced (RA) title.
Focus Foundation
Learn the basic skills needed to build a better relationship with your family dog or to start competitive dog sports such as agility and rally. This class is the foundation for all future training. It will increase communication and awareness between your dog and you. Some of the skills we will cover include attention, some off leash control, ability to work around other dogs as well as people and distractions, drive and motivation, confidence and basic obedience such as sit, down, stay and come. Other topics covered include: heel and side position, toy drive, and motivation. The focus of the class is on gaining skills and confidence to create the right relationship to become an effective team. This class is a prerequisite to Intro to Agility as well as a great prelude to any obedience class. This, or graduation from another obedience class, is the prerequisite for Rally. This class is a prerequisite to Intro to Agility as well as a great prelude to any obedience class.
Private Consultations & Training
Private consultations can help you find an effective solution to behavior problems and training issues. Are you feeling overwhelmed by your dog's behavior? Is your dog experiencing behavioral problems? Are you feeling anxious about all the work involved in training your dog or changing your dog's behavior?
For any of these reasons and more we are happy to provide private, one-on-one consultations, training, and behavior modification. (Private instruction in dog agility is also available.)
In order to help you and your dog
we're happy to provide private training classes here at Lucky Dog or at your home or other appropriate environments - tailored to fit the needs of you and your dog. We recommend that everyone responsible for training the dog attend the sessions.
These are some of the many issues that we can address in a private session
Good manners skills
greeting people nicely, walking politely on leash, coming when called, and many others.
Housetraining
Crate training
Destructive behavior
Dashing out the door
Fear aggression toward other dogs outside the home
Jumping up on people
Fear aggression toward people (if your dog has not bitten a person)
Lack of focus or impulse control
We can also schedule private instruction in dog agility.
Private training is the right choice if
Your dog has specific behavior issues that are not addressed in a group class or make your dog an inappropriate candidate for group class
Your dog does not get along well with other dogs or people
Your dog has difficulty focusing around other dogs or in new places
You have a schedule that makes attending a group class difficult
You prefer the one-on-one focus of the trainer that private training provides.
You are in a group class but want some extra help.
Your private consultation and training includes several steps.
Discuss your dog's behavior & medical history
Discuss your goals for your dog in detail
Basics on how dogs learn & positive reinforcement
Outline a behavior & training program
Work with you and your dog, teaching you both the skills needed to lessen problems and increase the reliability of appropriate behavior
Handouts are given or emailed so you can continue to practice at home

Tips for a Fun Pawty!
Size Matters
Canine guest need a sufficient amount of space and supervision. Lucky Dog has a perfect, safe space for your guests. Do it yourself, or we can help you plan it.
Pick of the Litter
Consider the guest list. The key element to a successful human event is to invite a stimulating group of guests but at a canine event, the mix is in the interest of safety. Your party should be limited to dogs with compatible personalities and good manners. Dogs that are already familiar with each other from the dog run, neighborhood or doggy day care center will be most likely to play politely.
Bone fido Invitation
Every good hosts knows that the invitation sets the tone for the party. Consider breed stationery to match that of your guest of honor. For a truly special invitation, have a pet photographer take a special picture of you and your beautiful pet. Remember to include the date, time, location, RSVP information and the words All canine guests must be accompanied by their owners. Remember, invitations should be sent out at least three weeks before the day of the party. Ask us for help in finding great invitations.
Dog Play
If you are the kind of host who loves to create an unforgettable event, have lots of fun doggie games planned. We can make suggestions. You may want to consider hiring an obedience instructor who can teach party guests, old and new, some tricks. Easy and safe agility exercises are an especially fun idea. Watching Harry, the Great Dane, barrel through tunnels is just as much fun as watching Sophie, a Toy Poodle, discover her athletic ability on a low hurdle. Be sure that the agility obstacles you use are safe for all participants. This is not the time to be running over a tall A-frame where someone can get hurt or scared.
Chow Hounds
Dogs will enjoy a special doggie birthday cake (and be sure to have lots of goodies for the human guests to enjoy). We can organize that for you. Or if you prefer baking yourself, liver cupcakes topped with cream cheese and peanut butter icing are a bit hit with the kibble crowd. Do not forget the beverage of choice at these dogged affairs is cool, fresh water.
Pooper Scoop
Have plenty of plastic bags hand for cleaning up do's and don'ts. And if the party is indoors, make sure there are rolls of paper towels and spray cleaner as well.
Treats to Go
Once the party is over, send your guest home with doggy bags. Fill them with yummy, healthful treats and perhaps a toy. After all those snacks, you always want to look after your canine friends.
We are available by phone and email. If you want to visit, we are happy to schedule a time that is convenient for you. Instructors are only available during classes and events.
