The Business of Photography: Everything You Need to Know with Leigh Andersen (Four sessions)
Instructor: Leigh Andersen. This class is designed to help photographers understand the business and marketing end of the photo industry, an area often overlooked when a photographer is building his or her career. The course offers a great opportunity to learn what "you don't know that you don't know", in other words how to create yourself (the photographer) as a brand, and how to effectively market that brand to clients appropriate to your work and skill level. Regardless of your area of interest, Leigh Andersen will teach you how to "connect the dots" - her term for employing a combination of research, social media and marketing to reach your goals. The class will detail the main pillars of the commercial photo industry - Editorial (portraiture and celebrity portraiture), Syndication, Music (album packaging and publicity), Commercial Advertising, Entertainment Advertising and Fashion Advertising - and how to break in or move forward in each market. We will discuss what works and what doesn't work when reaching out to clients, with careful attention to how new media has influenced how photographers show their work. We will also talk about marketing and branding strategies, including defining your strengths and style, the importance of creating a website that is both respectful of your vision and client-friendly, how to approach clients for meetings, researching photographers and agencies that reflect your direction, how to craft a marketing plan, when and how to approach a rep, and how to stay ahead of technology and client expectations. The class closes with Leigh reviewing your portfolio and/or website and suggesting specific ideas to better package your work. Whether you're established but feel stuck at a certain level, or are just beginning to understand the business of photography, this class will help refine your marketing methods and move your career forward. The Portrait Series (Six sessions - West Side Annex)
Instructor: Ken Merfeld. In this workshop we will discuss all aspects of creating a poignant, meaningful portrait series, including the importance of communication skills, the psychology of dealing with people, design continuity of your work, and the element of trust within the artistic exchange. In working within the structure of a "theme related" body of work, an artist not only gains deeper insight into his or her subject matter but also learns more about him/herself as a producing artist. This course stresses the importance of developing a conscientious work ethic and challenging yourself on a regular basis to produce new bodies of work within specific periods of time. With 25 years of commercial and fine art photography experience, instructor Ken Merfeld will offer careful guidance for class participants as they develop an outline for creative organization, execution, and completion of their personal projects. Lighting and "technique" applied to subject matter is emphasized, analyzed, and fine-tuned. Print quality and presentation of work is also addressed. All students will choose and produce a personal portrait series with a minimum of six images. These projects will be discussed and critiqued during class, defining a course of action to continue and/or apply to other subject matter for future portfolio enhancement. This workshop is open to beginning and intermediate levels of photographers interested in going beyond the surface level of portraiture. Project prints are due each class session. The final class session will be held at Ken Merfeld's studio in Culver City. Please bring portrait and people-related portfolios to the first class meeting. Exploring Contemporary Fine Art Photography with Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin (Six sessions)
Instructor: Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin. Contemporary fine art photography is a process of transforming ideas into images, and images into objects. The photographer acts as a channel to which this progression can evolve. This six-session course will investigate this process and use of photography as a tool for individual expression - not just in terms of innovative composition and interesting camera techniques, but more importantly, as an exploration into the fundamental principles of contemporary visual art. We begin by examining the works of prominent photographers as well as other visual artists, thereby developing an aesthetic vocabulary and a working knowledge of visual syntax applicable to the study of both art history and popular culture. Guest speakers will be invited. We will also study classic and contemporary styles of fine art photography through a series of conceptual assignments, which will emphasize creative freedom and conceptual impact. Through weekly assignments, students will be encouraged to survey various different compositional and technical approaches to consider which would best exemplify the power of their own visual voice. At the end of the course students will possess a greater appreciation of photography as a fine art form and a deeper knowledge of their own artistic expression. Six Sessions: Dates: Mondays, July 25 - August 29, 7-10 pm; Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels. The photographs of "natural landscapes" with which we're most familiar-Ansel Adams' pictures of Yosemite, perhaps, or those National Geographic series on icebergs or rainforests, in fantastic color-all show the world we would encounter if we could travel to those special, faraway places. A pristine view, unsullied by man's presence, is usually preferred, but sometimes we welcome a noble lighthouse or a picturesque old barn tucked into the corner of one of these images. Our "social landscape", on the other hand, is neither faraway nor unsullied, and it's right outside your door. That social landscape includes taxicabs and telephone poles, beer signs, graffiti, political billboards, mom-and-pop corner shops and people, most of all. In the Social Landscape, people interact with one another and with the vast public spaces that surround and welcome them all - parks and boulevards and plazas - and they negotiate the more organized venues that they and others have chosen to share: stadiums, theaters, bars, clubs and buses. Signage guides participants and pedestrians in direct language, but it also shouts slogans and promises with cleverness and neon. The infrastructure of that built environment must be navigated: streets, bridges, walls, wires, and boxes. Rules, codes and conventions are often unwritten, but they're in the air for all to feel and follow, or not. Through lectures and discussions, exercises and assignments, this class will explore the Social Landscape as other photographers have seen it over that last hundred years. Students will learn more about their own responses to the Social Landscape and the challenges they must overcome and embrace in order to communicate their experience in photographs that reveal, edify and engage. The course will include one field trip shooting assignment. Six Sessions: Dates: Tuesdays, August 9 - September 6, 7-10 pm + Saturday, August 27, 10 am - 1 pm (field trip); Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels. Stretching Your Frame of Mind with Joe Baraban (Weekend Intensive)
Instructor: Joe Baraban. Imagine yourself with an artist's palette in your hand. A recently stretched canvas is waiting on an easel, and a jar full of cleaned brushes sits on a small table next to you. Cobalt and ultramarine blue, raw sienna and burnt umber are positioned side by side while chromium oxide green, cadmium red and yellow lie together opposite them. They have all been squeezed from tubes, asking to be mixed together. Now imagine that instead of all those wonderful pigments, your palette holds the elements of visual design and composition. Vanishing point, negative space, perspective, tension, color, texture, pattern, and line have been etched into the aged wood. When you mix red and blue you get purple, blue and yellow and you get green. But what happens when you mix tension, a few patterns, and perspective together while taking your daughter's portrait during an outdoor birthday party? Or negative space, some texture, and a vanishing point when you're composing a street scene in a small Tuscan village? Remember, you're still an artist, but a camera on a tripod has now replaced the stretched canvas and easel. In this unique, weekend intensive workshop, Joe Baraban will help you "stretch your frame of mind" while developing your eye. Assignments to shoot during different times of the day will give you a better understanding of and sensitivity to light as it enhances every aspect of photographic design. Joe will show you how to incorporate these elements of design and composition into your imagery. A new, finely tuned vision will be the result, and you will walk away armed with the ability to create powerful and memorable photographs. Weekend-Intensive (Three Sessions): Dates: Friday, August 19, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday, August 20, 5 am - 7 pm, Sunday, August 21, 9:30 am - 6 pm (Please note exact meeting times may vary.); (NOTE: This class has been rescheduled for August 19-21 (previously July 15-17). The Black and White Master Print with George DeWolfe (Weekend Intensive)
Instructor: George DeWolfe. The Black and White Master Print revives the idea of a masterpiece. During this workshop we will use the tools and workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop that mine the intricacies of presence, the fundamental characteristic of a masterpiece. A masterpiece is the result of an artist's individual authentic genius. That authenticity creates presence - the key element of an authentic masterpiece - and the final result of light working on the forms of an object or scene. This workshop advocates this relationship and lays out the perceptual and technical skills necessary to practice and achieve presence. We'll see how the great painters in history made presence; discuss how the modern science of lightness perception has improved our ability to help us see like the brain sees (not as the camera sees); learn skills of black-and-white tonal perception with exercises designed to improve our visual and emotion response to black-and-white tonal values; talk about reflective practice, the skill that makes a master printer; go through a Lightroom and Photoshop workflow, step-by-step, and spend the rest of the time printing. This course will be taught in LACP's digital lab. Students will be printing using the iPF Canon 6400. Each student will have their own workstation equipped with a 27″ iMac computer and loaded with Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC. (Outside of the first 10 enrollments, students will be required to bring their own laptop loaded with Photoshop and Lightroom.) Bamboo Pen & Touch digital tablets are available if needed. Weekend-Intensive (Three Sessions): Dates: Friday, September 23, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, 10 am - 6 pm; Enrollment Limit: 18 students; NOTE: Outside of the first 10 enrollments, students will be required to bring their own laptop loaded with Photoshop and Lightroom. Skill/Experience Level: Experience in working with Lightroom and Photoshop is helpful but not required. Finding Your Visual Voice with Sara Terry (Seven sessions)
Instructor: Sara Terry. This is a workshop about the emotional and sub-conscious content of photos and how to make photos that come from that place, helping you to truly define your own voice as a photographer. It is not a workshop about making "good" photos. It's about setting aside technical know-how (and the obstacles that often come with that) and accessing intuitive, reflective ways of working that will lead you to make photos that only you can make. Rather than focusing on the "how" of making and composing photographs, this workshop focuses on weekly problem-solving assignments that are designed to engage students with the emotions and personal connections involved in creating photographs that truly reveal a personal visual voice. Each week, we will review the work that students have made and choose one photo made from the assignment, a visual "word, " resulting in a complete visual sentence at the end of the workshop. "Part of this workshop is inspired by those I learned from, but most of it is informed by the fact that I became a photographer at a time in my life when I lost my faith in words. As someone who had grown up believing in the power of words to convey truth and inspire action, as someone who had been a reporter for nearly 20 years, I was shocked to encounter a situation in my life where words utterly failed me. Almost by accident, I picked up a camera - first as a way to try to communicate with the person who could not be reached through words, but ultimately as a way to communicate with myself, with my own thoughts and feelings during what was a painful, yet ultimately transformative time. Although my work as a photographer has taken me back into journalism, and long-term documentary projects, I have never lost my connection to this personal approach to shooting, and to understanding that every truly revelatory image is as much about the person taking the picture as it is about the subject." - Sara Terry Seven Sessions: Dates: Tuesdays, September 27 - November 15, 7-10 pm (no mtg. 11/8); Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels. Location: Venue: Los Angeles Center of Photography; Venue Phone: (323) 464-0909; Address: 1515 Wilcox Ave., Los Angeles, California, 90028, United States

Seeing Like a Camera, Editing Like a Master with David H. Wells (Weekend-Intensive)
Instructor: David H. Wells. Despite what the camera manufacturers claim, gear doesn't make you a better photographer. To become a better photographer, you need to take a lot of pictures and select the best few. The two hardest things about photography are learning to see like a camera and learning how to select which are the best images after you have been photographing. These two skills are ones that the best photographers consciously (or unconsciously) have already mastered. They are the difference between a beginner's occasional "lucky shot" vs the consistently strong images of a master photographer. In this weekend-intensive workshop, we will spend the first day learning to "see like a camera." In order to see like a camera students need to 1) learn NOT to over-think their compositions by including content that is intellectually important to them but adds little to the viewer's experience of the photograph, 2) learn how to use the monitor on the back of their cameras to evaluate the difference between what they saw in their mind's eye and what the camera actually recorded and 3) understand that seeing like a camera is a skill like any other skill, one that requires a grounding in the proper techniques followed by hours of practice. In this phase of the workshop, we will explore the proper techniques through a series of shooting exercises. We will photograph together on Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning to fully explore how to see like a camera. We will also explore how to better understand available light, how it is shaped by the time of day, seasons, the photographer's positioning, etc. During the second day we will explore "editing like a master" as we learn how to properly critique and edit photographs. Saying "wow, " "neat" or "cool" is not critiquing. We will explore the common language for critiquing photographs. We will discuss the photographic tools, elements and techniques the photographer used, successfully or unsuccessfully, as we select a small set of the best images from each participants work. When it comes to selecting images, most photographers cannot edit their own work because they are too caught up in the content of the image or in the emotional experience they had making the image. In this class we will explore how to edit your photographs effectively by stepping back and looking at the work more analytically and dispassionately. After the early Sunday morning shoot, each student will bring 200 +/- digital files on a USB drive or hard drive and we will edit those down to a top 50 images +/-. Over lunch, we will then take those images to a nearby one hour lab/drug store photo lab (4 x 6 inch prints, again prints only, no digital files. Students are required to pay for their own processing.) After lunch we will lay out the images from each student on a large table, one student at a time. We will them edit them down, with the all the students watching. David will start cutting the number down to get to a top 15 or 20, talking about his thinking he progresses. At the end of each edit, the student ends up with a top 15-20 images (approximately) which reflects their artistic strengths, subject matter of interest, etc. Students also learn by watching David do the same edit with the photos of others. In some ways the students learn more watching the same process as it plays out with their peer's work. The observant students begin to "mentally" edit the other work and they learn about editing (whether or not they agree with choices.) Students leave this part of the class with an education in photo editing AND a professionally executed edit that will cut their large set of images down to a final, tightly edited and clearly defined top twenty images. Please bring ten images on a flash drive or disc, particularly those dealing with light and space, to the Friday night meeting. Weekend-Intensive (Three-Sessions): Dates: Friday, September 30, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2, 10 am - 6 pm (Please note exact meeting times may vary.); Enrollment Limit: 18 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. The Daily Visual with Ken Merfeld (Six sessions - West Side Annex)
Instructor: Ken Merfeld. How dedicated are you to your craft? What percentage of each day do you spend shooting, dealing with, or thinking about photography? Do you walk the streets with your camera? Do you wish you could shoot every day? Now you can. The Daily Visual workshop is intended to motivate you to shoot every day, no matter what. Every day your goal is to shoot at least one visually compelling image, a piece of art, per se, no matter where you are or what you are doing. Your daily art will be "found" (discovered) images, nothing set up or pre lit. You will develop a 24/7 "mind set" to discover interesting visuals incorporating emotional light, while raising your level of awareness on a daily basis. Assignments will be given to strengthen your point of view, sharpen your eye for discovery, and change the structure of how you photograph. Instructor Ken Merfeld has taught "concepts" classes for years and will challenge how you see, what you shoot, what you do or don't do with light, and where you are going with your photography. The class encompasses learning available light, portraiture on the streets, finding "poetry out of the ordinary", interpretive thinking, strengthening your personality when shooting in public, and introducing your mind into the artistic equation while easing you into a new, more disciplined work ethic. Project and assignment prints due each class session. Please bring creative portfolios of what you "love" to shoot to the first class meeting. Six Sessions: Dates: Wednesdays, November 2 - December 14, 7 pm - 10 pm (no mtg. 11/23); Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels. Coming to Focus with Matt Black (Weekend-Intensive)
Instructor: Matt Black. Effective photographs are instantaneous and intuitive, but building a body of work requires thought and preparation. In this workshop we will focus on building concrete strategies towards developing your ideas, deepening themes, and establishing an ongoing visual dialogue with your subject. How do you identify those elements that make your vision unique and channel them into a cogent body of work? How do you filter out the extraneous to get to the core of your vision? What are the visual elements that advance your ideas, and what distracts from them? Join photographer Matt Black for a three-day workshop that focuses on developing and deepening your connection and commitment to long-term documentary work. The commitment we will explore is twofold - both to your subject, and to your work. Students will learn how to follow themes and ideas over time and build their photographs into cohesive bodies of work that are socially relevant and personally meaningful. Through class assignments and discussion, the workshop will sharpen your perceptive skills as a photographer and work to bridge the gap between your ideas and how you photograph. The goal is to establish a personal, authentic, and ongoing visual dialogue with the world around you. Individual portfolio reviews and meeting with Matt are also included in the workshop. A combination of shooting, critique and discussion, this workshop helps to deepen your perceptive skills as a photographer, building a framework for future growth. "Matt's commitment to the communities he engages and immerses himself in is truly inspiring. He is extremely encouraging and is able to attune himself to the essence of your work in a very short period of time. Although he is well-versed in all technical aspects of photography, and answers any questions put to him, his emphasis was primarily about developing your own personal vision and defining your project. Matt asked many gentle but probing questions about what draws you to a certain subject. By doing this [workshop] you learn a lot about who you are as a photographer." - Merri Lisa Trigillo Weekend-Intensive (Three-Sessions): Dates: Friday, November 11, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday and Sunday, November 12-13, 10 am - 6 pm (Please note exact meeting times may vary.); Enrollment Limit: 18 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. Gum Bichromate over Platinum / Palladium with Digital Negatives with Joseph Rheaume (Three sessions - SMC Campus)
Instructor: Joseph Rheaume. Immerse yourself in the elegant practice concerning gum bichromate washes applied over platinum / palladium prints. Platinum palladium and gum bichromate are two of the most revered of the alternative processes. The 19th century technique combining these processes has the effect of enhancing the print by slightly increasing the contrast as well as using color to build depth and chroma. The intrinsic qualities of the platinum / palladium print make a magnificent base for many of the tones that gum bichromate can afford in controlling color and contrast. Combining these two processes offers a palette with which truly unique prints can be made. In this two and one half-day workshop, you will learn the techniques and subtleties involved in making digital negatives, coating and exposing platinum / palladium prints, and preparing and coating gum washes over platinum / palladium prints. This is an exciting and informative workshop. Whether you make photographs using 8×10 film, digital SLR cameras, or with your iPhone, this workshop will teach you to make beautiful platinum / palladium and gum over platinum prints. Friday evening's class session will be held at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Saturday and Sunday will be held at Santa Monica College. Students should purchase one pack of 20 sheets (8.5 x 11) of Pictorico Premium OHP Transparency Film prior to the workshop for printing digital negatives (about $25-30).
By doing this [workshop] you learn a lot about who you are as a photographer." - Merri Lisa Trigillo. The Black and White Nude: Lighting Chiaroscuro with Ann Elliott Cutting (One session)
Instructor: Ann Elliott Cutting. The human form is beautiful to work with photographically. Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider in the creation of a nude image. Chiaroscuro in art is an Italian term that literally means 'light-dark'. In paintings the description often refers to tonal variations which are used to suggest the volume and modeling of the subjects depicted. This type of lighting lends itself well to the nude due to the lost and found quality is has. In this one-day workshop we will concentrate on using chiaroscuro lighting while working with nude models on location in a beautiful modern home. The goal of the class is two-fold: first, to feel comfortable working with talent, and secondly, to photograph the nude in a subtle mysterious manner by using this lighting style. Participants will photograph the nude in a variety of locations, experimenting with lighting and directing poses. There will be a short lecture and demo at the start of the day to fill our minds with ideas, then the majority of the day will be spent working with the models and controlling the lighting, setting and poses. The last part of the day will consist of a critique and conversation about work created during the workshop. The workshop will take place on location with nude models. Students are encouraged to bring a DSLR camera equipped with a hot shoe or sync connection. Fine Art
Six Sessions: Dates: Wednesdays, July 6 - August 17, 7-10 pm (no mtg. 7/27); NOTE: This class will have a no meeting date on July 27th; Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels.
Location: Venue: Los Angeles Center of Photography; Venue Phone: (323) 464-0909; Address: 1515 Wilcox Ave., Los Angeles, California, 90028, United States

Photographing in the Social Landscape with Thomas Alleman (Six sessions)
Instructor: Thomas Alleman. The photographs of "natural landscapes" with which we're most familiar—Ansel Adams' pictures of Yosemite, perhaps, or those National Geographic series on icebergs or rainforests, in fantastic color—all show the world we would encounter if we could travel to those special, faraway places. Location: Venue: Los Angeles Center of Photography; Venue Phone: (323) 464-0909; Address: 1515 Wilcox Ave., Los Angeles, California, 90028, United States

Although my work as a photographer has taken me back into journalism, and long-term documentary projects, I have never lost my connection to this personal approach to shooting, and to understanding that every truly revelatory image is as much about the person taking the picture as it is about the subject." - Sara Terry. Seven Sessions: Dates: Tuesdays, September 27 - November 15, 7-10 pm (no mtg. 11/8); Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels.
One Session: Dates: Saturday, October 29, 10 am - 6 pm; Enrollment Limit: 12 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. No lighting experience is necessary. Location: LACP + Private Residence, TBA.
Flash
Crash Flash 1: On-Camera Flash with Julia Dean (One session)
Instructor: Julia Dean. In this workshop, students will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. First, we will go over all the buttons and dials on the flash. The day is then divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use a flash. Shooting time follows each demonstration so students can put the information to use. The lecture begins with discussions on why and how to use a flash as the main source of light (meaning a low-light situation requiring use of a flash) and how to use a flash as a fill light (balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit). We will also explore how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of a flash, ways to diffuse a flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations will include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode. Though the day is spent mostly with the flash on camera, students will also learn how to improve the quality of light by using the flash off camera (in hand or by bracket). This is done with either a TTL cord or with wireless technology. Both will be demonstrated. We will also discuss how to "power down" the flash input for specific effects. Students seeking to advance their portable flash skills are encouraged to take Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash where they will learn to improve the quality of the light by using flash off camera, with stands and umbrellas. Crash Flash 1 primarily covers the use of a flash in TTL mode. Crash Flash 2 covers the use of a flash in both the TTL mode and manual mode. One Session: Dates: Sunday, October 23, 10 am - 6 pm; Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. Crash Flash 2: Off-Camera Flash with Julia Dean (One session)
Instructor: Julia Dean. This class is for students who have taken Crash Flash 1: On Camera Flash and want to learn how to light more beautifully by getting the flash off camera. Julia will demonstrate how to use a single flash or multiple flashes off camera to achieve a beautiful "quality" of light. We will use light stands, umbrellas, and gels - in the studio and on location, in both the TTL mode and in manual mode with wireless technology. There will be a four-hour shoot in the afternoon with models to put all the techniques into play. At the end of the day, a critique will take place to view students' work. Please bring camera, flash (es), memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash), jump drive (for transferring your images for critique), light stand, bracket (that goes between the light stand and the flash - make sure it has a slot for an umbrella), umbrella (medium size), wireless transmitters. Introduction to Location Lighting with Jennifer Emery (Six sessions)
Instructor: Jennifer Emery. Mastering the skill of lighting on location takes planning in addition to technical savvy. Photographers must be capable of scouting an appropriate location, assessing how time of day will affect the outcome, and determining what quality of light will best facilitate the mood of the picture. Will it be a blend of ambient and artificial light, or does the strobe dominate? Do we use direct or indirect light, hard or diffuse light? How do we adapt to organic changes in the physical environment? This workshop is designed to help answer these questions. The class begins with a little tech talk on basic physics of light, practical understanding that directly applies to photography and be will put to use throughout the workshop. We will move on to discussing and working with subtleties of natural light and then the integration of artificial light. Students will discover how equipment choice can affect the mood of an image by experimenting with various light sources and modifiers such as bounces, diffusion material, umbrellas, soft boxes and grids. Basic as well as more complex lighting setups will be demonstrated and discussed. Emphasis will be placed upon utilizing the surrounding environment to the photographer's advantage. The goal is to provide each student with basic knowledge for seeing and working with light on location and the confidence to use natural and artificial light in various conditions. The workshop will include hands-on shooting sessions with models, and at least two location shoots off-site. Past locations have included Venice Beach, the Cadillac Hotel, Griffith Park, the Jesus Wall and the Hollywood Vaults. Students should have a digital or film SLR camera capable of manual exposure settings and a hot shoe or sync connection.
Please bring camera/lens, flash unit (s), memory cards, extra batteries (for camera and flash), jump drive (for transferring your images for critique). Please bring plenty of extra batteries for your flash units. Optional: TTL cord or TTL wireless transmitters, diffuser (such as the Omni Bounce, Gary Fong, Honl Diffusers.) The Black and White Nude: Lighting Chiaroscuro with Ann Elliott Cutting (One session)
One Session: Dates: Saturday, October 29, 10 am - 6 pm; Enrollment Limit: 12 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera and the ability to shoot in manual mode. Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait with Michael Grecco (Weekend-Intensive)
Instructor: Michael Grecco. There is a noticeable difference between an ordinary portrait and a dramatic portrait. The dramatic portrait establishes a connection to the soul of the subject and the photographer's execution in capturing that connection. The near mystical play of dark and light, the angle that is just right, or the suggestive spread of a shadow to accent an expression can elevate a photo to a much higher creative plane. In this studio and location lighting workshop, join photographer Michael Grecco, recognized as a "lighting master" by Photo District News, as he teaches students how to create a dramatic portrait. Using his own work as reference, Michael will explain his techniques for creating light and shadow and will demonstrate how he creates his stylistic and dramatic images. He will explain his specialty lighting, and show you the setups he used to create the striking signature looks of notable celebrities. Michael will help participants to break out of the box of ordinary portraiture and lighting into a new, higher realm of portrait photography. Participants will be challenged to re-invent how he or she sees light and shadow and how to add touches of both to construct a technically and artistically striking image. Saturday will be spent in-studio at Edge Studios and Grip in Los Angeles. On Sunday, the class will move on-location to eclectic Venice Beach. Here, he class will work with models and with people they meet on the boardwalk. Suitable for photographers of all levels, this workshop is for the amateur through the most advance professional with an interest in lighting that goes beyond the sun.
The Fine Art of Digital Printmaking with Eric Joseph (Six sessions)
Instructor: Eric Joseph. More than just a technical class on Photoshop and Lightroom, this course will emphasize the digital print as a unique art form in which the choice of inkjet paper to print on makes the difference between an ordinary photo and an extraordinary piece of artwork. This course emphasizes the creative benefits of understanding and controlling your digital print results through hands-on printmaking sessions. Topics covered will include proper camera settings, color management, monitor and printer calibration, what type of printer to use and why, downloading and applying ICC profiles, preparing files for printing and everything else you ever wanted to know about digital printing. Eric will make sure the information is taught in an easily digestible and accessible format. "The goal for every photographer should be to have a personal relationship with your materials so that when you push the button on your digital camera you have a pre-visualized notion of what the final image will ultimately look like up to and including what paper you will be printing on." - Eric Joseph Each student will have their own workstation equipped with a 27″ iMac computer loaded with Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC.
Weekend-Intensive (Three Sessions): Dates: Friday, August 19, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday, August 20, 5 am - 7 pm, Sunday, August 21, 9:30 am - 6 pm; (Please note exact meeting times may vary).
Weekend-Intensive (Three-Sessions): Dates: Friday, September 30, 7 pm - 9 pm + Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2, 10 am - 6 pm (Please note exact meeting times may vary). Seeing the Light with Patrick Harbron (Weekend-Intensive)
Instructor: Patrick Harbron. This weekend-intensive workshop will be divided in two parts: 1) environmental portraiture in an urban setting and 2) seminar and discussion on "25 things you need to know to be a photographer." After a Friday evening orientation session, Saturday will be spent studying the skills and techniques that go into making great environmental portraits. Venturing onto the streets of Los Angeles, students will discover how to turn any street scene into a perfect location for a portrait story. Participants will learn tips on composition, color temperature, framing, spontaneous lighting and connection with their subject. Students will achieve great results with a minimum amount of lighting and camera equipment, including a single portable flash and reflector. On Sunday, the class returns to LACP for a morning critique of Saturday's work. Then, Patrick will lead a discussion on "25 things you need to know to be a photographer" and how to effectively blend art and commerce. Students will discover the differences between corporate, magazine and advertising clients and how to market to them. Social networking will be covered, in addition to discussion on the value of promotional mailer pieces, portfolios, websites and source books. Further topics will include understanding contracts, agreements, invoices, estimates, releases and the importance of registering copyrights. Stock licensing, stock agencies and representation will also be covered. Suitable for all levels, this workshop effectively teaches students the art of creating environmental portrait stories while simultaneously building the framework for a professional photography business.
The Nocturnal Landscape: Photographing the Mysteries of the Night with Peter Bennett (Seven sessions)
Instructor: Peter Bennett. When the sun sets and the street lights slowly start to glow, a whole world of light, shadow, color and mystery awakens. When others pack up their gear and go home, the more adventurous know this a time to explore, to seek images that are not so evident, not so visible, but there to be captured and made into beautiful and dramatic photographs. Critical to successful night shooting is training the eye to see in an environment it is not used to photographing in, and learning what conditions will make for a successful photo and what will not. Utilizing tools and techniques such as long time exposures, balancing ambient light with artificial light sources, working with low and high ISOs and bracketing will be covered as well as post production techniques to bring your images to their full potential. This is a seven-session workshop that is designed to help students get started exploring and photographing this extraordinary nocturnal landscape. The three Saturday night sessions will be hands on shooting workshops in different Los Angeles locations and will be a time to explore, experiment and push the limits of the student's work. The Monday classroom sessions will be for discussing the tools and equipment we will be utilizing, as well reviewing the previous Saturdays work. Critique and breaking down the components of student's images and will be a big part of the class and an opportunity to learn from each other. Street Shooting
Street Portraiture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Todd Felderstein (One week) - Summer
Instructor: Todd Felderstein. Do you have a photographer's eye that singles out many moments often unnoticed by others? In our ever-changing landscape there are so many of these instances that can be captured if you have the knowing, planning and expertise. Deemed "Street Photography", this art-form goes beyond the snapshot into the artistic documentation of today's urban realities by harnessing emotion, light, shadows and storytelling in a single image. "Street Portraiture" builds on this art style where the photographer capitalizes on the raw beauty of the unposed subject creating a natural, unencumbered photograph. Technically the photographer is forced to move from the shadows to directly engage the subject transitioning from a former candid creation to a deliberate portrait. In this one-week class, join filmmaker and photographer Todd Felderstein as together we will discover the secrets in "Street Portraiture" that will hone our storytelling skills, allowing us to better discover hidden gems and how to approach and engage random subjects without disrupting their environment. This class will further address composition, lighting, cameras and the psychology behind this style of shooting. We will create an assortment of portraits on a weekly basis while always challenging our comfort zone and creative eye. The course will conclude with a final project to be presented to the entire class. Having completed this class, students will walk away with a more refined photographer's eye, a greater technical understanding, and a greater sense of confidence when venturing out with their camera, regardless of the surrounding culture and community. NOTE: Since "Street Portraiture" oftentimes needs to be somewhat intimate, students should be prepared to be pushed outside of their comfort zone. One Week (Five Sessions): Dates: Monday-Friday, July 18-22, 10 am - 1 pm; Enrollment Limit: 15 students; Skill/Experience Level: Open to all levels, but students should have a working knowledge of their camera. A basic understanding of photography fundamentals is encouraged. The Art of Photographic Capture for Teens (ages 12-18) with Lee Corkett (One week) - Summer
Instructor: Lee Corkett. Photography is the art of looking at the same world as everyone else, but challenging yourself to see something new. This class will consider pre-existing ideas about photographs and push students to think about using images to not just record reality, but to present it as a unique experience. Designed to take the advanced beginning photographer to the next level of expression, the course focuses on analyzing and practicing the basic technical capture of photographs and using cameras to interpret the world around them. The class will weigh technology and creativity equally and begin to solidify the students' understanding of the histogram, deliberate exposure for output, understanding of depth of field and how to simplify or complicate subjects through its use, and how shutter speed can lengthen or compress the representation of time in a single photograph. Students will be given examples of how photographers have met these concerns in the past and conceptual projects will be assigned using the methods learned. In order to create a proven method for success, students will draw on their own personal interests and histories and will keep a visual journal of their progress to track their creative process. A Digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera is recommended for this class; however, point & shoot cameras will be supported as well. Whether you enjoy shooting wildlife, landscape, people or any other kind of travel photography, instructor Lorne Resnick will explain what goes into making great pictures - from a complete digital workflow solution to finding and shaping your personal artistic voice. The workshop will place heavy emphasis on creating images with "purpose". We will look at how you approach your image making and the basic elements of a successful photograph. Split into three parts, the day begins with a presentation on creating emotionally compelling images. Additionally, Lorne will demonstrate his fine art workflow, including post-production in Photoshop and a three-minute "master printing" course. Part two focuses on portfolio reviews, via digital projection, of everyone's work. Learning how to critically analyze work is an indispensable skill for a photographer to have. In the end, it's about finding your vision and voice. Discussion and Q&A finish the day. Topics may include the creative process, the travel story arc (what to shoot and how to shoot it), equipment selection, image processing, the current markets available for travel work (fine art, commercial, book publishers, websites), how to optimize travel shooting to take advantage of different markets, and more. Whether you are a novice or a pro, this workshop will have you generating more compelling images, giving you the structure and understanding to refine your skills. "Manuello Paganelli's Cuban photographs are a brilliant window on a land and people too long hidden from North American eyes. Working in the tradition of Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, Paganelli brings an artist's eyes and a native son's sensibility to his superb photographs." - Frank Van Riper, The Washington Post, August 1995 Cuba will, like few other places, awaken your senses, revive your creativity, and grab onto your soul. In Havana, where the Workshop is centered, waves crash onto the protecting walls of the Malecon, playfully splashing those who stroll the ocean-side walkway. On the wide boulevards, without hurry, cars from the '40s and '50s chug along, carrying families…or, with increasing frequency, wide-eyed tourists. Throughout Havana, pastel-colored Spanish-colonial buildings hug the streets, adding pops of color and historic elegance to this stuck-in-a-time-warp treasure of a country while the friendly Cubans will be eager to meet you and share with you their relentless spirit, their passion for life, their great love for their country and a strong cup of Cuban coffee.

Death Valley National Park with Michael E. Gordon (Travel Workshop)
Instructor: Instructor: Michael E. Gordon. Date: December 1-4, 2016. Death Valley National Park is a desert wonderland of immense scale, beauty and power. Its 3.3 million acres, the vast majority of which are roadless wilderness, encompass a staggering array of landscapes, unique geologic formations and colorful vistas. The largest National Park in the contiguous United States, Death Valley is both beautiful to behold and rich in history, mood and mystique. Its towering sand dunes, seasonally snow-capped mountains, warm springs and vast empty valleys offer endless opportunity for exploration and ample subject matter for the creative artist. There's no place on Earth quite like it. Internationally acclaimed landscape photographer Michael E. Gordon has carefully selected some of the park's most photogenic locations for this workshop, where outstanding photographic opportunities will be joined with inspirational, creative, and technical discussions. Michael works individually with his students to address their technical and compositional challenges, and on Sunday he'll lead a review/critique session of student images made during the workshop. This will be an intensive adventure! Expect pre-dawn starts, late finishes, outstanding locations, and great fun and camaraderie. Workshop Dates: December 1-4, 2016. We will meet for orientation at 1 pm the afternoon of Thursday, December 1, in Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley. Our first full workshop day is Friday, December 2, and we will conclude around midday Sunday, December 4. (Please note exact meeting times will vary). Tuition and Deposit: $695 tuition; $100 deposit (The balance is due six weeks prior to the start date. Please call 323-464-0909 to pay the balance). Payment and Refund Policy: A $100 deposit is required to reserve space in the workshop. The balance is due six weeks prior to the start date. Refund requests arriving six weeks or greater before the start date will result in loss of deposit. No refunds will be provided for requests arriving less than four weeks prior to the start date. All refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to info@lacphoto.org. What Is Included: All instruction and location guiding. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will send you a trip checklist to assist with preparations. The workshop is provided under a Commercial Use Authorization from Death Valley National Park. What Is Not Included: Airfare, lodging, car rentals, camping gear (if camping), camera gear, and meals are not included, nor are any items of a personal nature. Participants will be required to transport themselves to and from our meeting location at Stovepipe Wells, California (in Death Valley National Park). Number of Participants: Limited to ten participants. Who Is This Workshop Designed for? This workshop is designed to accommodate all camera formats and all skill levels. Our goal is to introduce you to the beauty and diversity of Death Valley and to help you advance your photography through creative personal expression. Requirements/prerequisites: Participants must provide their own transportation and camera equipment. A suggested gear list and other workshops details are provided upon registration. Participants should be in good physical condition and should be able to comfortably walk 4+ miles each day on uneven terrain (short but steep sand hills, rocky washes, and occasional natural rock steps which may require the use of hands for balance). An SUV or other rugged high-clearance vehicle is recommended (we will be driving dirt and gravel roads) and carpooling to our locations within the Park is required and will be orchestrated daily by Michael. Weather and Clothing: December and March can be quite pleasant in Death Valley National Park. While the floor or Death Valley may see daytime temperatures in the mid to high 80's, higher elevations are 15-20 degrees cooler (such as the famous Racetrack, which this tour will be visiting). Sunny skies are the norm in Death Valley, but storms can bring cloud cover and rain. Wind is common in the desert and dust storms can suddenly blow up with approaching cold fronts. Layered clothing is recommended to more easily adapt to the temperature extremes we may encounter. Good outdoor walking shoes are required, and please bring a range of outdoor-worthy clothing that will keep you comfortable in temperatures of low 40's to mid-80's. Be sure to bring a good hat with wide brim and lots of sunscreen! Lodging Recommendations: Our lodging is at Stovepipe Wells Village (http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/lodging.htm). Rooms have been blocked for this workshop, but you are responsible for registration and payment. You will be provided full lodging details upon workshop registration. Camping is also available for those who prefer this option: http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/camping.htm" Travel Time: Anticipate a 5-6 hour travel time (about 250 miles) to Stovepipe Wells from the greater Los Angeles area. Meals: You are responsible for all your own meals/snacks during the trip. A recommended food and gear list will be provided to all workshop participants. Due to the remoteness of the Park and lack of standard dining facilities, expect meals on-the-go or eating foods easily prepared in your room. Stovepipe Wells has a small General Store with food, beverages, and gasoline available, and Stovepipe Wells Tollroad Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
