Kudzu Music is the latest incarnation of a long retail music presence in the High Country of North Carolina.
What began some 30 years ago as Keyboards in the Boone Mall, changed to Rydell Keyboards in the early 1980s by Stephen and Diane Rydell.
Over the years, the focus of the store
Rydell Music Center, changed from simply keyboards to include guitars and accessories which reflect the musical interests of a growing college town in Boone, NC.
Richard and Terri Miller, long-time residents of Boone, assumed ownership of Rydell Music in the summer of 2011.
Although the music store has a long history of quality merchandise and service, the Millers have added their own personal touch, including a name that resonates with life in the South – Kudzu Music.
Our goal at Kudzu Music is to provide excellent music products and outstanding service at a reasonable price.
Whether you are a novice or professional, enjoy bluegrass or Bach, play for an audience of one or thousands, we think you will find a large selection of instruments and accessories that will fit your budget.

Walden 0550CE
One of the features that surely contributes greatly to the quality of its output is a solid spruce soundboard, which although much more common on guitars in this price range these days, is still a wonderful development. Hawthorne HO221TB
Hawthorne is Walden’s attempt to bring even more affordability to their line of guitars. Conceptually it is distilled to the essence of the guitar without compromising quality or sound. The 200 series Hawthorne is made of Nato – an Indonesian hardwood similar to mahogany, but much more affordable. The guitar is fully bound – instead of painted on – to seal the ingrain, which creates stability and protects the instrument. The rosette itself is inlaid – not a decal like you see in a lot of imports – and protects one of the more delicate sections of the instrument. It has a bolt-on neck, Indian rosewood bridge and fingerboard, and steel tuners. Everything a quality instrument should have – without the higher price tag. The OM body shape is a little smaller than a Grand Auditorium; narrower in profile, making it more comfortable for smaller individuals or those doing studio work. TB stands for Tobacco Sunburst – the beautiful, unique natural color finish of the guitar. Features: body shape: Orchestra; top material: Mahogany; back material: Nato; side material: Nato; nut width: 1 11/16 “; truss rod: 2-way; binding: White plastic; rosette: Plastic; tuners: Chrome; finish: Tobacco Burst Satin

Jim Greene – guitar, banjo and harmonica
Jim Greene began his musical career at his Palatka Florida High School Senior Day. He performed an Elvis Presley impersonation of “Hound Dog”, complete with sideburns, cape and guitar. Well he lost the cape and sideburns, but the guitar has been a rock steady friend all these years, providing funds for college tuition and living allowances. After completing college, Jim spent the next 20 years traveling and working in touring bands that included the folk era, country rock days, hard rock clubs and even the disco times. With touring behind him, Jim moved to Nashville where he worked as a session steel player for RCA Studio B, recording with numerous Nashville artists and performing several times at Opryland USA. After Nashville, Jim moved back to Florida and joined the successful group Dixie Drive. The band toured the infamous Chitlin’ Circuit that ran throughout the southeastern states that bordered the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic coastline. The Circuit was known for its rigorous six-night-a-week schedule. Dixie Drive also performed as the opening act for The Pure Prairie League, which at the time was one of the hottest acts in the US and was well known for hit songs including Amie and Let Me Love You Tonight. In the late 80’s, he started raising a family. In 1999, with kids grown, Jim began teaching guitar full time at Shannock’s Music in King, North Carolina. This eventually led to a move to Lenoir where he currently lives and teaches guitar at The Harper School of Music. Jim is proud to be the inaugural guitar instructor at The Harper School since its opening in January 2005. Jim also has taught guitar for the last seven years at Kudzu Music of Boone, formerly Rydell Music Center. Learning how to play and perform in the times before the “internet” and You Tube, Jim is proud to be able to offer practical real lessons to make anyone a better player from beginner to advanced.

Over the years, the focus of the store, Rydell Music Center, changed from simply keyboards to include guitars and accessories which reflect the musical interests of a growing college town in Boone, NC.
