Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is the form of dentistry that deals with the look and function of one's teeth. If you have chipped, stained, or crooked teeth, we can help you attain that perfect smile! The doctor and experienced staff at Kneib Dentistry will ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed with us during any procedure. We offer nitrous oxide and premedication oral sedation in order to make any experience as pleasant and painless as possible, and with our offices located in Erie we can serve the entire region easily and conveniently. Cosmetic dentistry at Kneib Dentistry is not a major operation. Often, it may require only a minimal number of treatments from Dr. Kneib before you are able to showcase your brand new look to friends, family, and coworkers. When you see how dramatic the results can be, you’ll have plenty of reasons to smile.
Crowns
When the size of a filling exceeds a certain proportion of the tooth, it must be replaced with a cap, also called a crown. Dr. Kneib may also recommend a crown if your tooth is cracked. A crown covers your tooth completely, fitting snugly at the gum line and protecting what remains of the natural tooth. These may be of an all ceramic material, all metal, or a combination of the two. The are many advantages to porcelain or ceramic crowns: Reflects light with a natural, healthy glow; No dark metal lines; Appearance blends well with other teeth; Great for front teeth. Dr. Kneib may also recommend a bridge or implant be utilized to replace one or more missing teeth. A high quality porcelain crown that we fully recommend is Ivoclar Vivident's e.Max crown. The benefits of the product include high strength, high durability, and esthetic appeal all in one.
Veneers
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom-fitted over your natural teeth. Think of this treatment as a manicure for your smile. Using new biomaterials, Dr. Kneib can change the shape, color, and length of your teeth, improving your smile without the need for invasive treatments. We use ultra-thin porcelain veneers to correct chipped, weakened, or discolored teeth. And our veneers can return real structural integrity to damaged teeth while leaving them looking as good or better than the originals as seen in the photos below. An accurate impression is fundamental to a successful outcome in restorative dentistry. Besides conventional impression taking, Dr. Kneib conducts digital impressions with Cadent iTero for consistent, superior results. To learn more about crowns and veneers, please call us in Erie at (814) 838-6354.
Whitening
There are many things that cause teeth to become discolored over time: Coffee, Cigarettes, Medication, Aging. But now you can improve the quality of your smile by brightening teeth that have lost their sparkle over the years. Whether you have one problem tooth or a dull yellowing across all of your teeth, Dr. Kneib can treat discolored, stained, or aging teeth with our state-of-the-art whitening process. The whitening treatment can be completed in just over an hour in our office or, if it’s more convenient, you can choose at-home treatments. You'll notice the difference immediately, and so will your family, friends, and coworkers when you show off your new look. Two whitening methods are available at Kneib Dentistry: Power Whitening with a Laser—done at our office; At-Home Whitening— for home use (not to be confused with over-the-counter bleaching products available in local drug stores). The difference between the two is the strength of the whitening agent and the time it takes to get effective results. Power whitening usually takes one visit, while home whitening may take up to two weeks of daily use. To learn more about our whitening options, please visit or call us in Erie at (814) 838-6354.
Orthodontics
Fixed orthodontics (braces) and removable orthodontics (retainers) are used in conjunction to help create the best possible cosmetic result. To learn more about your orthodontic options, please call us at (814) 838-6354.
Tissue Recontouring
With the DEKALaser, we can form your gumline to show off your teeth better. This would be done painlessly and within just a few minutes.
One-Visit-Crown (CAD/CAM) Dentistry
What is CAD/CAM Technology?
The term CAD/CAM is
literally a shortening of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) aka "one-visit-crown." The CAD/CAM machine provides the dentist with restorations, which are milled from blocks of white composite resin or porcelain, matching the shade of the restored tooth. Once the treated tooth is shaped and prepared, an image is taken of this defected tooth. The image then provides the data for a computer and the software is used to create a porcelain or resin composite piece for the defect, essentially creating a virtual restoration.
The software then sends this virtual data to a milling chamber in the lab where the dental restoration is carved out of a solid block of composite resin or porcelain.
Our standard of quality, here at Kneib Dentistry, is the highly esthetic, high strength e.Max porcelain ceramic crown. The resultant restoration can then be adjusted in the patients mouth and cured/bonded in place. Following acid etching of both the underside of the restoration and the topside of the tooth itself (which increases surface area on both opposing surfaces), composite resin materials are then used to fuse the resultant restoration to the tooth, completing the restoration process.

Dental Implants
Whether you need to replace missing teeth or touch up some minor flaws or injuries to your teeth, Kneib Dentistry has you covered with affordable dental implants for anyone living around our office in Erie, PA. What are Dental Implants?
If you are missing one or more teeth, you'll want replacements that are as natural as possible.
If dentures don't work for you, consider dental implants. Unlike dentures, which can be removed, implants are permanently anchored into the jaw itself, in which it acts as the tooth root. Dental implant surgery gives you the closest option available to having your natural teeth back again.
To qualify for dental implant surgery, you'll need to have healthy oral tissue and jawbone ridges that are in good shape.
For people with thinner or smaller jawbone, a CAT scan is typically needed to determine whether an implant is possible. In some cases, bone grafting is needed to add bone mass to the jaw. When the implant is inserted into the jaw, a chemical and mechanical bond is formed, and the jawbone actually grows into the implant. It generally takes around six months for the implant to successfully fuse with the bone.
Once the implant area is fully healed, an abutment is placed on top of the implant.
The purpose of the abutment is to hold the crown. The implant crown is finally placed and it looks as if you have your tooth back again.
Dr. Robert W. Kneib is one of only a few general dentists in the Erie area that places dental implants.

Orthodontics: Fixed and Removable
What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.
The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite."
Dr. Kneib applies either fixed or removable corrective appliances to bring teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance.
Fixed orthodontics are brackets or appliances cemented or bonded to the teeth. Removable orthodontics are any appliances that can be removed by the patients during treatment. Any orthodontic care may need multiple phases of care. All orthodontic care needs an initial workup before treatment is rendered and diagnosed.
Fixed Orthodontics
Fixed Orthodontic technology is a specialty of dental technology
that is concerned with the design and fabrication of dental appliances for the treatment of malocclusions, which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.
There are three main types of orthodontic appliances: active, passive and functional. All these types can be fixed or removable.
Removable Orthodontics
Invisalign
If you’ve always wanted straight teeth, but never liked the idea of having braces, Invisalign® may be the perfect treatment for you. Invisalign® is a clinically proven method to straighten teeth that uses a series of clear removable aligners instead of metal wires or brackets.
Determining if Invisalign® is right for you
Our office will give you an initial examination to determine if the Invisalign® treatment is right for you. If it appears that it is an option, we will take photographs, X-rays, and an impression of your teeth. Dr. Kneib, a certified Invisalign® dentist, will then complete further diagnostic analysis to verify that Invisalign® will work for you and create a treatment plan that will determine exactly how the teeth will be straightened. At that time, we will also be able to let you know the estimated cost and length of treatment and determine if you qualify for orthodontic insurance benefits. When the treatment plan is finalized, your records will be sent to Invisalign® along with instructions from Dr. Kneib. Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, Invisalign® then translates those instructions into a series of aligners, customized specifically for you.
The Invisalign® Process
The total treatment time for most Invisalign® patients averages between 9 and 15 months. During that time, most patients will wear between 18 and 30 different aligners. As you replace each aligner with the next one in the series, your teeth will move—little by little, week by week—until they have straightened into the final position your dentist has prescribed. Typically, each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks. You should wear the aligners at all times to achieve the best results, only removing them to eat, drink, brush, and floss. You will also visit our office once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
Retainers
Retainers are the appliances that keep your teeth straight at the end of treatment.
This is a very important phase of treatment as without them your teeth could go slightly crooked again throughout growth and even in adulthood. As a general rule, we recommend that teenagers wear their retainers at least until they finish growing and that adults wear them indefinitely.
They come in two general forms.
Removable retainers look like a much thinner version of a rugby player’s mouth guard; in fact, they are almost identical to an Invisalign® aligner (see above). This type is usually worn just in bed at night. Fixed Retainers consist of a fine wire glued to the tongue side of the teeth; these are generally left in place for an extended period of time.
Retainers are the last vital element of Orthodontic treatment.
Root Canal Dentistry (Endodontics)
Treatment of Root Canal Disease
A root canal procedure limits the infection and keeps it from destroying the tooth.
During the root canal treatment procedure, the dentist removes the inflamed or infected tissue, carefully cleans, disinfects, and shapes the root canal space inside the tooth, and then fills and seals this space.
It may take one or more appointments to complete the procedure.
A protective restoration should be placed after root canal treatment has been completed in order to restore the tooth to function and help prevent tooth fracture.
At Kneib Dentistry we think of a root canal as washing the invasive bacteria out of the root
filling it with a bio-compatible material that soothes the area, then sealing it back up again. Top it off with a solid filling or a crown, and you're as good as new.
That means you get to keep your tooth. And that's a good thing.
Root Canal Therapy
Many people flinch when their dentists tell them they need root canal therapy.
While dentists are sympathetic to fears of pain, at Kneib Dentistry we also want you to know that root canal therapy has three purposes: Stop the toothache; Prevent bacteria and pain from spreading into the jaw; Maintain the original tooth instead of replacing it with a implant or bridge.
The root canal is actually a channel that runs from the root of the tooth, which connects to the bone, up to the top surface of the tooth.
The canal contains blood vessels, nerves, and the complex cells that make up the living tissue inside the tooth. This lifeline inside the tooth is called the pulp.
When a tooth is decayed or cracked, bacteria can get to the pulp.
The acid from the bacteria irritates the pulp and it becomes inflamed; it's the same process you watch when other parts of your body become infected. When the pulp tissue becomes inflamed, it's harder for blood to flow to the tissue, and the resulting pressure creates pain inside your tooth.
What are the most common symptoms of root canal disease?
If you have any of these symptoms, it would be wise to visit us at Kneib Dentistry because you might have root canal disease or another dental problem. Some of these symptoms may also be attributable to decay, defective fillings, periodontal diseases, cracked teeth, or other tooth or bite-related problems. On other occasions, the symptoms may even be caused by disorders that are not related to the teeth. Root canal disease can manifest itself with a wide variety and combination of symptoms. Common symptoms of root canal disease include:
Lingering sensitivity to cold liquids
Lingering sensitivity to hot liquids
Sensitivity to sweets
Pain to biting pressure
Pain that is referred from a tooth to another area, such as the neck, temple, or the ear
Spontaneous toothache, such as that experienced while reading a magazine, watching television, etc.
Constant or intermittent pain
Severe pain
Throbbing pain
Pain that may occur in response to atmospheric pressure changes, such as when flying or scuba diving
Pain that may occur in response to postural changes, such as when going from a standing to a reclining position
Swelling
Bridge Dentistry
The concept of a dental bridge is probably just what you would imagine. It literally bridges the gap of one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge includes two crowns or caps for the anchoring teeth on either side of the gap, which are called abutment teeth – and a false tooth or teeth in between. The false teeth that fill the gap are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. We, at Kneib Dentistry, like to use the high quality porcelain pontics. Dental bridges can be supported by natural teeth and/or implants.
A dental bridge can be one of the following
Traditional bridges
Traditional bridges (most common) involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth with a pontic (fake tooth) in between. Traditional bridges are made of either porcelain fused to metal (PFM)or all porcelain.
Cantilever bridges
Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the gap (missing tooth or teeth), in which it is not technically “bridging” the gap.
Maryland bridges
Maryland bridges are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.
The benefits of a dental bridge include
The restoration of your smile
The restoration of your ability to properly chew and speak
Maintaining the shape of your face
Distributing the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
Preventing remaining teeth from drifting out of position
Dentures and Partials (Prosthodontics)
What are dentures?
Dentures are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth and improve your quality of life. With practice, eating and speaking will be easier. You can smile freely without feeling embarrassed. Dentures can be made to look like your natural teeth. There may be only a small change in how you look. Full dentures may even give you a better smile. Dentures also support your cheeks and lips so that the face muscles do not sag and make you look older. You are the key to your new smile's success, and these four tips will help: Give yourself plenty of time to get used to your dentures. Eat a balanced diet for good health. Practice eating and speaking. See your dentist regularly.
What are partial dentures?
Partial dentures are dentures that replace only a few missing teeth.
What are complete dentures?
A conventional complete denture is made and placed in your mouth after the teeth are taken out and the tissues have healed. Healing may take several months. The framework of the complete denture, called the base, is normally made of plastic that closely matches the color of your palate (the roof of your mouth). When the base of the upper denture rests against the gums and palate, it makes a seal to hold the denture in place.
What is the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
Conventional dentures are dentures that are made and placed after the remaining teeth are removed and the tissues have healed. Some patients may have the option of getting immediate dentures. For these, the denture is made before the teeth are removed. Once the denture has been made at the lab, the dentist removes the teeth at the next visit and the denture is placed right away. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to go without teeth during the healing time. Once healing is complete, the dentures may need to be adjusted.
What is an over-denture?
An over-denture is a denture that fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth or implants.
Caring for Your Dentures
Like natural teeth, you must take good care of your dentures. Here are some tips to care for your dentures: Dentures are very delicate and may break if dropped even a few inches above a hard surface. When handling your dentures, stand over a folded towel or a sink with cool water. Brush each day to remove food deposits and plaque and to help keep the artificial teeth from getting permanent stains. It is best to use a special brush and cleanser made for cleaning dentures, but you can use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Don't use hard-bristled brushes because they can damage dentures. You can use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your dentures, but it does not take the place of careful daily brushing. The denture needs to be cleaned two to three times daily. Do not let your dentures dry out or they may lose their shape. When you are not wearing your dentures, put them in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in plain water. Never soak dentures in hot water. It can cause them to warp.
What is good oral hygiene when you have full dentures?
In addition to taking care of your dentures, taking care of your mouth is also vital if you wear full dentures. This includes brushing your gums, tongue, and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before inserting your dentures. This stimulates your tissues and helps remove plaque.
What should I do if my dentures crack or break?
Call your dentist immediately. Normally, dentures can be repaired quickly, often on the same day at Kneib Dentistry. Damaged dentures can cause additional oral health problems, so see your dentist right away. Never attempt to repair dentures yourself. They require professional repair and adjustment.
Children’s Dentistry (Pedodontics)
Decayed Baby Teeth: Bottle Caries
Signs and appearance of baby teeth displaying bottle caries
Brown baby teeth with fragmented edges; Upper front baby teeth that break easily.
Children who have erupted teeth
or are past the age to be weaned are highly susceptible to rotted front teeth when being put to bed with a bottle containing milk, juice, or other sugar-containing liquids. There is decreased salivary flow during sleep and clearance of the liquid from the teeth is slowed. Call us at (814) 838-6354 for more details.
The liquid pools around the upper front baby teeth and creates an excellent environment to promote the growth of decay-causing bacteria.
Removing the bottle before the first tooth appears and wiping the child's gums and teeth with a soft cloth before being put to bed can help prevent decay.
At 18 months of age, parents should bring their child into Kneib Dentistry for an examination by Dr. Kneib and recommended home care.
We offer the latest technology in diagnosing bottle caries: the Diagnodent Caries Detection Aid. With this tool, even very small lesions are detected at the earliest stage.
Tooth Decay in Children-Cavities
Fluoride has been a great benefit to patients of all ages in helping prevent dental decay.
Regular brushing and flossing lowers the chance of developing "cavities."
At Kneib Dentistry
we know that the most decay-prone areas of teeth are the grooves and depressions on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, which require further preventive care.
To prevent decay, a plastic-like coating called a sealant should be painted on the chewing surfaces of all the back teeth.
Studies have shown that sealants can reduce tooth decay by as much as 90% to 100% in the Erie area and nationwide. [i would like to mention products used]
The American Dental Association recommends, and Dr. Kneib agrees, that sealants be placed as soon as the first adult back teeth come in at age 6 or 7.
Sealants should continue to be used as each adult back tooth comes into the mouth. All back teeth that need to be sealed are present by age 13. Sealant application is simple and fast.
Mouthguards
Dr. Kneib, why should I wear a mouthguard?
While mouth guards are not mandatory equipment in all sports, their worth is indisputable. Mouthguards cushion blows to the face and neck. A mouthguard should be part of every athlete's gear, no matter the sport. Even adults or weekend athletes need to protect their smile and preserve their health. Do: At Kneib Dentistry, we feel that you should wear a mouthguard at all times when playing sports. Wear a mouthguard custom-fitted by a dentist, especially if you wear bridges or braces. Don't: Wear removable products, like retainers, when playing sports.
There are two types of mouthguards
Custom-made: Designed by a dentist and made on a cast of your teeth, they cause very little interference with speaking or breathing. They provide the best protection and fit over braces and fixed bridges. They also cost more. Ready-made: Purchased at most sporting goods stores. They are the least expensive, the least effective, and the least comfortable.
Prevent Tooth Decay
Fluoride, in proper dosage, has been shown to significantly reduce dental decay.
When fluoridated water has less than the ideal amount or is not available, fluoride supplements are recommended. (A call to your local water district is all that is necessary to determine whether your water has fluoride or not.)
When supplements are needed
the administration of fluoride supplements should begin shortly after birth and continue through the time of eruption of the second permanent molars (approx. 12 years of age).
Regular dental check-ups at Kneib Dentistry should begin no later than 18 months of age.
Restorations (Bonding, Crowns, Veneers, etc.)
For more than 100 years, dentists restored teeth primarily with a material made of mercury and silver. The procedures tended to hold up pretty well, but there were some weaknesses, including teeth cracking due to expansion of the material and restorations turning black as the silver corroded. Fortunately, we have excellent new techniques in adhesion dentistry that have better, longer-lasting results. We can replace old crowns and bridges with metal-free restorations. The difference between the old metal fillings and our new porcelain restorations is amazing. The porcelain restorations reflect the translucence of natural teeth, don't show wear, or cause opposing teeth to erode. Plus, fitting the crown or bridge is so easy that these dental procedures can be accomplished in one appointment.
Bonding
Bonding is a quick and affordable way to repair many cosmetic flaws or injuries. It can yield dramatic results in a single office visit, quickly filling in ugly gaps between teeth and repairing chips and cracks. Bonding essentially hides any natural flaws through the placement of a thin plastic coating on the front surface of the teeth. Dr. Kneib uses dental bonding to sculpt individual teeth with a special tooth-like material that looks, acts, and feels like the real thing. After treating the tooth surface, Dr. Kneib applies a putty-like bonding material that is then sculpted and shaped to suit your needs. A high-intensity light causes the plastic to harden, and then the new surface is smoothed and polished. We use many Ivoclar products for bonding. For individuals who meet the requirements, any of the above mentioned dental procedures can be accomplished in-house during one appointment.
Gum Disease
Gum Disease During Pregnancy
Many mothers have experienced gum disease, dental pain, and/or tooth extraction during or shortly after their pregnancy. This is often seen as being a "normal" side effect of being pregnant. However dental disease, which is an infection of the teeth and/or gums, is not "normal" for any patient. There are three basic events that happen during pregnancy which make the patient more susceptible to dental disease. First, hormonal changes may make the gums more susceptible to gum disease. Second, pregnant women tend to eat smaller, more frequent meals, exposing their teeth and gums to sugars and acids more often. Third, cravings for junk foods and inadequate oral hygiene pose an increased threat to the teeth and gums. Pregnant women are advised to schedule a dental evaluation and receive preventive dental care at Kneib Dentistry. Personalized oral hygiene instruction by Dr. Kneib will be given to fight disease and promote overall good health for the mother and her baby.
Gum Disease Infects Almost 80% of Adults
The American Dental Association says that over 75-80% of all adults have or will have some form of gum disease. Gum disease, more correctly called periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It can be divided into several categories. The first stage is called gingivitis and is characterized by gum tissue that is red, puffy, and bleeds easily when touched with a toothbrush, floss, or dental instrument. The second, third, and fourth stages are initial, moderate, and advanced "periodontal disease," respectively. These stages are different from gingivitis because the infection has destroyed the bone supporting the teeth, causing eventual tooth loss. At Kneib Dentistry, the treatment is more involved at these stages, usually consisting of a special cleaning with anesthesia and sometimes gum surgery.
Infections in Joint Replacements Can Be Instigated by Severe Gum Disease
Prior to joint replacement, Dr. Kneib strongly recommends a thorough dental examination for presence of tooth and gum infection. Periodontal disease is a commonly occurring oral infection of the adult population (80% of adults are affected) destroying the bony support of the teeth. This infection slowly progresses over the lifetime of the patient and is often manifested in the advanced stage in the senior population. Because of the lack of any discomfort to the patient until total loss of bony support to the teeth, many adults are unaware that they have this infection. However, the bacteria from this bone destroying disease, especially in the more advanced cases, has been attributed to possible infection of joint replacements. Candidates for joint replacements who have not been seen by Dr. Kneib in over a year should consider a thorough dental evaluation of their teeth and gums before surgery. Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment of gum infections and tooth abscesses may take from two weeks to two months before the patient reaches adequate health before surgery.
Periodontal Gum Disease—Silent and Deadly
Periodontal disease can go on for years without pain and without detection unless specific examination procedures are performed. Visual oral examination by itself (even by a dentist) will not reliably detect periodontal disease until it has reached an advanced stage. Early detection and adequate diagnosis require measurement of pockets (the crevice between the tooth and gum) with a periodontal probe. At Kneib Dentistry, effective prevention and treatment is available, but the damage caused as the disease progresses is irreversible. Early detection is critical to prevent tooth loss and disfigurement. Although the procedure is simple and requires only a few minutes, millions of American adults have never had it done. Some signs of periodontal disease are: Bleeding gums, Redness of gum tissue, Swelling of gums around the teeth, Breath odor, Receding gums, Mobility of teeth.
Some Dental Problems are Easy to See—Plaque!
One of the easiest problems to spot is a build-up of plaque. Plaque is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria, which is constantly forming on the teeth. Usually it is invisible to the naked eye, but when a person is not brushing adequately, it can build up to where it appears to be a thick whitish coating on the teeth at the gum line. If not removed, it can lead to gum disease. Another potential problem, which is easy to spot, is missing teeth. Many patients assume that if they are still able to eat, they are OK. But very often, losing just one tooth can lead to the loss of support, and teeth begin to drift into the empty space, causing a change in the bite. It also forces the remaining teeth to carry an additional load, sometimes past their ability to adapt. In most cases, when even one tooth is lost, the remaining teeth suffer and are more likely to be lost as well.
Gum and Bone Disease That Go Undetected
Prevention is an overused word in our vocabulary, but we all know it works. You see it in what you do every day. Who wouldn't rather prevent a crisis than manage one? Awareness of gum and underlying bone disease is very low. Only 50% of the population visits a dentist on a regular basis. Of that 50%, 80% have some degree of gum and bone disease. It is an epidemic. Were this any other disease, we would be calling on the CDC for immediate action!
Oral Disease—Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the most common periodontal disease, affecting 90% of the population, including our local Erie area community. It is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria that form plaque. In small amounts (when it is newly formed), plaque is invisible and relatively harmless. But when left to accumulate, it increases in volume and the proportion of harmful bacteria grows. These bacteria release toxins that result in inflammation of the gum tissue. Eventually, the plaque hardens and forms hard deposits called calculus or tartar.
Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry
For patients with high anxiety, we use anxiolysis, which is the use of a drug for the treatment of anxiety. It Really Works! You really can relax through your dental appointment. It Is Safe! Dr. Kneib will give you a small pill prior to treatment, no intravenous tubes or needles. You will have little or no memory of the experience. You probably won't remember any sounds or smells. You will relax for up to five or six hours after taking the pill. The time you are relaxing will vary depending on your needed treatment. Complex dental treatments that often require six to eight appointments, can be done in as little as one at Kneib Dentistry! All while you relax. People who have difficulty getting numb will find that relax dentistry eliminates this problem. Sedation dentistry is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits.
How does Sedation Dentistry work?
Dr. Kneib will give you a small pill to take an hour prior to your dental appointment. Your companion will accompany you to the office. By the time you arrive, you will be very drowsy. When you arrive in our office, you will be escorted into the comfort room, covered with a thick, warm blanket and placed on a monitor to watch your vital signs. After you are comfortable, Dr. Kneib and the experienced clinical team at Kneib Dentistry will take care of your dental needs. When your treatment is completed, your companion will return you home to finish your comfortable, relaxing day.
Will I feel any pain?
Most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during their treatment and feel surprisingly good afterwards.
Will I be unconscious?
No, you will be in a deeply relaxed state, and you will be responsive.
Will I be monitored?
Yes, one of our team is always with you and your vital signs are monitored during the entire visit.
How long will I be relaxing?
Depending on your needs, from two to six hours.
Will someone need to accompany me?
Yes, due to the sedative effects of the medication, you will need someone to drive you to our office and home again.
Who is a candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
People who have: High fear; Traumatic dental experiences; Difficulty getting numb; A bad gag reflex; Very sensitive teeth; Complex dental problems; Limited time to complete dental care. People who: Hate needles and shots; Hate the noises, smells and taste associated with dental care; Are afraid or embarrassed about their teeth.
Laser Dentistry
How is Laser Technology Used?
The use of laser technology in the dental chair is very advantageous for certain situations.
When there is a specific area that needs to be removed or trimmed, Kneib Dentistry uses the DEKA Laser to focus on a precise area of soft tissue. Especially when there can not be any damage in the surrounding area of the target, the laser is perfect for the job. The technology provides patients with precision treatment that may minimize pain and recovery time. We also have a separate laser for hard tissue treatment, called the Lumenis Opus Duo.
The major benefits of using laser technology
The application of lasers in dentistry opens the door for dentists to perform a wide variety of dental procedures they otherwise may not be capable of performing. Dentists using lasers in dentistry have become adept at incorporating the state of the art precision technology into a number of common and uncommon procedures.
Procedures involving tissue removal or reconturing may not require sutures or stitches.
Some laser treatment may not require anesthesia.
The high-energy light beam minimizes bleeding
because it aids in the clotting (coagulation) of exposed blood vessels, thus decreasing or stopping blood loss.
The high-energy beam minimizes bacterial infections because it sterilizes the area being worked on.
Damage to surrounding tissue is minimized.
Wounds heal faster and tissues can be regenerated.
Common Uses
Crown Lengthening
The laser can reshape gum tissue (soft tissue laser) and bone (hard tissue laser) to expose healthier tooth structure referred to as crown lengthening. Such a reshaping provides a stronger foundation for the placement of restorations.
Gummy Smiles
Dental lasers can reshape gum tissue to expose healthy tooth structure and improve the appearance of a gummy smile.
Muscle Attachments (frenula)
A laser frenectomy is an ideal treatment option for children who are tongue-tied and babies that are unable to breast feed adequately due to limited tongue movement. A laser frenectomy may also help to eliminate speech impediments.
Teeth Whitening
Let's face it, one of the first things you notice about people is their smile. When you meet someone with a bright, natural smile, it catches your attention. However, over time, the natural aging process and your lifestyle can stain your teeth.
There are many sources that cause teeth to become discolored over time
Coffee, Wine, Tea, Cigarettes, Medication, Aging. You'll notice the difference immediately, and so will your family, friends and coworkers when you show off your new look.
Two bleaching methods are available at Kneib Dentistry
In-Office Bleaching - Laser Teeth Whitening; At-Home-Bleaching - Provides for home use (not to be confused with over-the-counter bleaching products available in local drug stores). The difference between the two is the strength of the whitening agent and the time it takes to get effective results. Power bleaching usually takes one visit, while home bleaching may take up to four weeks of regular use.
To get your smile back to looking its best, you should choose a whitening method that
Achieves the longest-lasting results; Gives you the most naturally brilliant and uniform look; Is clinically proven to be safe and effective; Uses a low concentration of active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide); Is administered by dental professionals.
How its done in our office
Zoom!® whitening gel is carefully applied to your teeth. The gel is then activated by Zoom!®'s patented gentle LED light for 15 minutes while you relax and watch TV or listen to music. This process is repeated twice more before you go home with a naturally brilliant new smile.
How its done at home
Crest® Whitestrips® Supreme Professional is the #1 most recommended brand of teeth whitening system among US dental professionals. It provides custom tray-level whitening with 14% hydrogen peroxide—the highest concentration available in a professionally dispensed take-home teeth whitening product. Can only be purchased through a dental professional.
Other Info
The newly advanced system includes intensity settings and desensitizers to customize treatment for each individual patient. Now, you have the included feature of whitening trays at no cost for you to continue your whitening experience. Must first be considered a candidate for whitening before you can receive the treatment through a no-cost whitening consult.

Common Oral Cancer Symptoms
If you notice any of these changes, contact your dentist or health care professional immediately.
Swellings/thickenings, lumps or bumps, rough spots/crusts/or eroded areas on the lips, gums, or other areas inside the mouth.
The development of velvety white, red, or speckled (white and red) patches in the mouth.

Unexplained numbness, loss of feeling, or pain/tenderness in any area of the face, mouth, or neck.
Persistent sores on the face, neck, or mouth that bleed easily and do not heal within 2 weeks.
A soreness or feeling that something is caught in the back of the throat.
Difficulty chewing or swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue.
Hoarseness, chronic sore throat, or change in voice.

Dramatic weight loss.
How Does It Work?
It emits blue light that "excites" certain molecules (called "fluorophores") within the layers of mucosal tissues.
In turn, those fluorophores give off fluorescent light, in shades of green, yellow and red. The filter on the device makes fluorescence visualization possible, by retracting the reflected blue light, and by improving the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.

Testimonials
Great Dental Team at Kneib Dentistry!
I would recommend Kneib Dentistry to anyone who needs a dentist. At my visit a few days ago I was greeted by the friendly staff and had a very short wait time until I was called in for my appointment. My hygienist, Bri, is very thorough and makes you feel comfortable.

"Pure Pleasure!"
It was pure pleasure to visit Kneib Dentistry for my 6 month cleaning. As always, the entire staff was welcoming. I had apprehensions about this particular visit, because of some medical issues, but the ever-centered and calm Dara applied extra care to disarm my anxieties. This is the best dental office on the planet.

"Dr. Kneib is a phenomenal dentist!"
I certainly didn't have bad teeth to begin with; I'm simply a perfectionist. I researched numerous dentists in the area before I settled with Dr. Kneib. He was remarkably knowledgeable and told me the truth. In his opinion, the only way I was going to get the 'bang' effect that I was looking for was to go with porcelain crowns. He was absolutely right. His eye for perfection is incredible, and I get countless compliments on my smile. Dr. Kneib was the absolute right choice for me.
Zach S
"Eased dual implant anxiety at Kneib Dentistry"
The staff at Kneib Dentistry went to exponential lengths to ease my anxiety during my dental implant surgery. The procedure was explained to me as it was performed. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable. I honestly wouldn't have been able to do it without their extra help and gracious accommodations!

"I've never been so happy to go to the dentist!"
Since my first contact with the office to set up an appointment, everyone has been incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I have never felt like I was taking up too much of their time. The dentist is very thorough and explains everything. The hygienist did a great job on my teeth and the staff is helpful with everything from billing questions to trying to make appointments convenient for me. I'm so glad I found Kneib Dentistry!

"I Couldn't Have Been More Wrong"
I have a completely irrational fear of the dentist. Cold sweats. Goosebumps. My stomach moves right up into my neck, and just sits there the whole time, like it found a new home. I have a cavity that I could no longer ignore, so I took the bull by the horns. My wife and children had been seeing Dr. Robert Kneib for some time, so I made an appointment to go. First stop, dental hygiene. If you have never had your teeth cleaned by Dara Kneib, you haven't lived. The soft music, the gentle voice, the articulate way she scolds explaining how you need to "step up your flossing efforts." When she was finished, I couldn't wait to get home to try my new toothbrush. Then the dreaded dentist showed up. I had drawn the dentist's kid. "Just my luck," I thought. "He's going to use me for a practice dummy." I couldn't have been more wrong. Dr. Jared Kneib was professional, thorough, knowledgeable, and competent. He explained what would need to be done, and had the office manager (his brother, Warren) work up a complete set of options, based on my insurance. Whether you are a dental coward or looking forward to a terrific experience, you need to get right in to see the Drs. Kneib, and their tremendous staff. Call as soon as you have finished flossing. You will really enjoy the visit. Really!

"Best Dentist I've Ever Been To"
Everyone there is beyond friendly. There is nice and there is these guys. They genuinely act like you're a friend visiting when you come in. And they all have a great sense of humor too. It's nice to laugh at the dentist. Which to me is a terrifying experience so laughing is totally new for me. I can't say enough good things about them. When holidays come and the office is closed they even give their personal numbers in case of an emergency. They really go above and beyond to take care of their patients. Even if i moved and had to drive an hour or more, I'm never switching dentist.

"Absolutely Wonderful and Inspiring Experience"
My teeth were in bad shape hygienically due to years of neglect. I was decidedly nervous about my first visit. The staff at Dr. Kneib's was very very friendly and their cordial demeanor put me my initial apprehension to rest. Dr. Robert Kneib was also very informative, funny, and calming when he spoke to me about my situation and their plan for helping me improve my oral hygiene. I, never in a MILLION years, thought I would look forward to seeing my dentist again. However, there's just something about the whole experience at this practice that sets them as paramount among dentistry experiences in my life.

Fantastic Experience!
I have been recommending Kneib Dentistry since my new patient consult. The office and staff are warm and inviting, not cold and clinical like you've come to expect at a dentist office. From the time you leave the waiting room you are constantly informed of what is happening procedurally and what it all means, I couldn't believe how much I learned. Technology is everywhere from the reminders you receive about your appointment to viewing photos of your mouth and x-ray results from your dental chair. I look forward to going to the dentist, thank you to the staff, job well done!

Kneib Dentists To Save the Day
Dr. Kneib saved me again. I had unbelievable tooth pain after breaking a tooth. I called the office and they fit me in for a root canal right away. I can not say enough good things about this exceptional group of professionals. Their office staff are always kind and courteous and the efficacy with which their office is run is outstanding. Drs Robert and Jared Kneib are, without a doubt, the best dentists I have ever had. Thank you again for everything!

The Man Who Found His "Royal" Crown
I walked into Knieb Dentistry for an appointment yesterday and was nicely greeted by two pretty, smiling faces (Barb and Valerie) at the front desk. Before I could sit down in the waiting room I was escorted back to one of the cozy exam rooms and comfortably laid back in a "recliner" by lovely Melia, who would be assisting Dr. (Rob) Kneib with some (past due...my fault) dental work. I had been in twice before to have my teeth cleaned...once by Dara (Mrs. Rob Kneib)...now office manager (someone has to manage all these Kneibs...why not mom) and once by Kathy (who informed me that our mothers play bridge together). Both cleanings were pleasant, very thorough, educational, and, as I have a bit of an odd sense of humor...enjoyably fun. When Dr. Kneib came in, we first chatted about art (I'm an artist) and hiking and nature (we're both outdoorsmen) and of course my teeth. While I comfortably reclined (and watched the TV that is mounted at the perfect angle on the ceiling) Dr. Kneib got to work. He and Melea are quite a team...very professional and also very fun. I never thought I could laugh with gloved fingers and drills in my wide open mouth. I wanted to meet Dr. Jared Kneib too (since he just joined the practice this year and someday, I assume, Dr. Rob will pass the dental torch to him for good). Dr. Jared walked in (another smiling face) and as we all talked during "a little break" Dr. Rob was called to meet a new "walk-in" patient. While he was out for a few minutes, Dr. Jared took over, and if my eyes had been closed, I wouldn't have known they had done a "switcheroo". When Dr. Rob came back in, Dr. Jared went to work with the new patient ...all just like clockwork. While Dr. Rob finished up (over a few more laughs) I thought about how much and I might add..."high-tech" dental work that had just been so professionally done. When he handed me a mirror to show me what all had gone in my mouth in the past couple of hours...I was amazed. I walked out (again past smiling faces) with a brand new, perfectly fitting crown (no, not that kind...although they all made me feel like a king), a new "unnoticeable" filling and two great cosmetic "fixes"...all completely painless...and I'm not just saying that. Thanks to the ladies and gentlemen at Kneib Dentistry...I'll be back.

From Great Dentistry Come Grateful Patients
My son was in a horrible sledding accident when he was younger which knocked out some of his teeth. When he had his adult teeth come in they were crooked & one tooth was directly behind the other. I know this effected my sons confidence & he would rarely smile. I was a newer patient of Dr. Robert Kneib & I knew after the 1st visit I wanted no one but Dr. Kneib to help my son. Because of Dr. Kneib my son has an amazing smile & this year he got Prom King! You have a WONDERFUL staff & made us feel so comfortable in a place where it is easy to feel otherwise. True professionals that clearly love their work & their patients. I am so grateful!
Shelly

A Beautiful Restoration...Just As Requested
I would like to thank Dr Robert Kneib, Dr Jared Kneib and the entire staff at Kneib Dentistry for the exceptional work they have done for me. The extensive care they are able to provide in their state of the art office is remarkable. The staff is professional and very friendly and both Dr Robert and Dr Jared Kneib are highly skilled, thorough and kind. It’s comforting knowing NO MATTER WHAT my dental needs are, they can be cared for at Kneib Dentistry. Thanks again.

Then an Emergency, Now a Happy Child
I would of never let anyone else tend to my son to be honest, I have been with Kneib Dentistry for years. Story
My Name Is BOND...DENTAL BOND!!
A young girl came into the office after an accident at school. Unfortunately, she tripped and snapped her two front teeth off. Following standard protocol, the school nurse put the snapped pieces into a bottle of milk, which helps to preserve the teeth for bonding back in place. As you can see, the teeth cleanly snapped off, which makes it easier to work with and less noticeable after bonding. Dr. Kneib uses dental bonding to sculpt individual teeth with a special tooth-like material that looks, acts, and feels like the real thing. In this case, he took the tooth fragments and bonded them back in place. After treating the tooth surface, Dr. Kneib applies a putty-like bonding material that is then sculpted and shaped to suit your needs. A high-intensity light causes the plastic to harden, and then the new surface is smoothed and polished. Root canals were also done on the teeth after the bonding. After this procedure, the young girl even felt good enough to go to her gymnastics lessons that evening! Mission Complete!!!
A Minor Procedure Makes a Major Difference
Charles, a patient at Kneib Dentistry, has recently received some restorative touch-ups on his teeth. Being self-conscious about his smile, Charles accepted a treatment of four upper anterior porcelain crowns. We treated him with a more conservative type of crown, as opposed to the higher quality, aesthetic crown. As you can see from his teeth on the left, he has previously received crowns of lesser quality, which consist of porcelain fused to metal. This is a case where the patient, at the time, was more concerned about their smile than their overall dental condition. One step at a time.
Far From Home Doesn't Mean Far From Quality Care
In July of 2011, a man was in town from Minnesota, when part of his crown unfortunately broke during his stay in Erie. He was enjoying a visit with his family, here in Erie, when this happened. Looking to aid his emergency, a family member of Vinnie's strongly recommended Kneib Dentistry to provide him with quality dental care. The Kneib dentists used their technologically advanced Cerec CAD/CAM to design and mill an all-ceramic e-Max crown to replace his pre-existing broken crown. As you can see in the photo, they created a beautiful natural-looking tooth.
Dr. Jared Kneib's First Pedo Patient
Dr. Jared Kneib has taken on his very first pedodontics patient, here at the office! He is very glad to now be providing Joel, the patient, his most special dental care. Dr. Jared was excited to see that Joel's experience was both comforting and memorable. The doctor performed a tooth-colored filling on Joel while his mother, Karen, was standing by, watching her son. We look forward to seeing Joel in the future for his regular dental check-ups!!!
His Wife Can Now See That Smile Again
Steve has been quite a wonderful patient to have at Kneib Dentistry. He travels to our office in Erie from Oil City, PA because he knows quality dentistry when he sees it. Steve's wife was searching for that smile he used to have and undoubtedly came to us. His dental condition needed some major work and the Kneib dentists were up to the job. We removed all of the upper teeth and crowned all of the lower anterior teeth in porcelain...and Voila!!! There's that smile we wanted!
A Smile For Her Grandchildren
This patient's family came to our office seeking to create a smile for their mother. With the professional design and soft tissue reconturing with the DEKA Laser, Kneib Dentistry created a smile for a grandmother's wish. And think, these are just the temporaries! This process took place within just a few hours at the office! Now, she can greet her children and grandchildren with a smile that will last a lifetime!
Then an Emergency, Now a Happy Child
On June 12, 2011, Dr. Jared Kneib assisted Dr. Robert Kneib in restoring a young patient's two front teeth. After Reza, the young boy, had experienced an unfortunate accident at a local playground, his mother went seeking professional aid from Kneib Dentistry. On the Sunday after the accident, the two dentists collectively tended to the emergency. As you can see, Reza is now happy and smiling with his teeth looking as if the unfortunate event never occured!
