Jarra’s Ethiopian Restaurant opened its doors in May of 1983 as the first Ethiopian restaurant in Portland, Oregon. The restaurant is a result of the collaboration between husband and wife team Petros Jarra and Ainslee Sultriness. Retros and Ania initially came to the United States to attend school, with Ania earning a BS in Nursing and Petros earning a BA in Business. The couple planned on returning to Ethiopia, but circumstances changed and they decided to permanently make their home in Oregon. The restaurant was initially the idea of Ana who recognized the lack of Ethiopian food in Portland, which at the time was not the food centric city it is today. While Petros took responsibility for the front of the house, Ana developed the spicy and flavorful cuisine that she still cooks herself to this day. Although Ana did not know if there would be a customer base for her food, she forged ahead with the restaurant and, within two months of operation, received a glowing review from the Willamette Week. Petros and Ana started with a small five table space on Morrison and graduated over the years to the building they have on Hawthorne today. Jarra’s has continued to offer their food in a warm family friendly atmosphere and remains the first and longest operating Ethiopian restaurant in Portland.
