Accommodating a business at home - why good design matters
By Dan Harel & Naomi Harel, Principals, info@invisiondesignpartners.com First published in INVISIONS, Vol. 24, July 2013. One of the leading trends influencing the housing industry with regard to planning new homes or the remodel of existing ones is a dedicated space for a home-office. Such space is used for activities as small as paying household bills or as large as running a home-based business. Research suggests that working from home is a growing trend that is currently being practiced by millions of Americans. (Specific data validating this claim and offering information regarding the size and characteristics of US citizens that use their residence in part or as their only work place may be found through the US Census Bureau and other independent organizations such as Forrester Research).
Feng shui - the art of placement
By Dan Harel & Naomi Harel, Principals, info@invisiondesignpartners.com First published in INVISIONS, Vol. 23, June 2013. We are sometimes asked to explain the thought and practice behind feng shui and how this ancient Chinese art of placement is integrated with contemporary thinking of space layout. Traditionally, feng shui was based on the laws of Heaven (Chinese astronomy) and Earth with a purpose to improve life by generating positive and balanced qi (chi), a life energy that exists in all living things. In the past the method was widely used to orient spiritually significant buildings and dwellings in a favorable manner (i.e. in reference to a body of water, the stars or other important natural elements) in order to increase the positive energy and thus influence life and living.
One-of-a-kind (custom) furniture
By Dan Harel & Naomi Harel, Principals, info@invisiondesignpartners.com First published in INVISIONS, Vol. 4, November 2011. The term Custom Furniture refers to the creation of "one-of-a-kind" designs. The design of these pieces differs from the design of mass-produced furniture in several ways. Most significantly, because its focus is on providing specific solutions for the needs of the customer, its strong personal and emotional appeal and the cost for producing the pieces. In this article we will discuss the pros and cons of selecting "custom" and illustrate examples from our own design experience.
Interior Design FAQ
By Dan Harel & Naomi Harel, Principals.
What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?
A professional interior designer is qualified by their academic education, certification, experience and own artistic abilities to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces. In general, the goals of such activity include improving quality of life, increasing productivity in the work place, and protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public. Qualifications to address these goals or tasks are granted only from an accredited fouryear school of higher learning and include a wide range of technical skills aimed at providing a full range of Interior Design services. Formal education include manual and CAD drafting, space planning, formulation of appropriate, functional, and aesthetic design concepts, knowledge of furniture history, furniture design, lighting calculations, ergonomics and business practices to name a few.
What are the NCIDQ and the NCIDQ Certificate?
The core purpose of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) is to protect the health, life safety and welfare of the public by setting standards of competence in the practice of Interior Design. The NCIDQ administers a professional competency exam for Interior Designers. All U.S. states and Canadian provinces that regulate the profession recognize this exam. Exam candidates who meet NCIDQ's eligibility requirements and pass all exam sections are awarded the NCIDQ Certificate. This certification is accepted by states and provinces requiring licensing as proof of competency in the field of Interior Design. The NCIDQ eligibility requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design from an accredited school of higher education, and years of professional experience.
Color, Finish & Material FAQ
By Dan Harel & Naomi Harel, Principals.
What are the effects of light on colors, finishes and materials?
Light affects how color appears to us depending on exposure to various intensities, types, the surfaces it hits and reflects from, the direction it is originated from and in the case of natural light, time of the day. High light intensity will make color appear lighter or "washed out" while low intensity will make it appear darker. Understanding how natural and artificial lights effect our perception of a space is essential for successful selections of CFM.
How should natural light be considered in interior space design?
Many interior spaces enjoy natural light as the main source for lighting during the day. The direction from which the light enters a space, however, effects how color appears at different hours. For example, light flooding a space from the east in the morning hours adds a warm tone to surfaces and colors. Light flooding a space from the west in the afternoon hours adds more intense (contrast) tons. Light flooding a space from the north appears "colder" (bluish) and will tend to tone down colors in a space.

Deb R. Rochester, New York, April 2014
"Hi Naomi, Every time I walk into my bedroom I say: Ah… it’s so pretty…” “Just wanted to let you know that (the upholster) dropped of the furniture this afternoon. She did a great job and it looks very nice in the room! Thanks again for your help (selecting fabric and rug) with this - I never would have been able to do this on my own"
Juanita J. Greece, New York, September 2013
"Dear Mrs. Harel From the first time I was fortunate enough to meet with you on July 8th, to the final delivery and expert setup of my custom-made home office furniture on August 12th, I could not have been more pleased with the interactions and guidance I received from you. During our initial consultation session, you paid close attention to all of my concerns and wove them into a professional interior design plan. Although I have no background in this area, I was never made to feel that way. It is very gratifying to be able to communicate with someone so skilled in interpersonal relationships." "I can’t tell you how very happy I am with theses results." "With your knowledge, agility, zeal and tape measure, we were able to convert a dream into reality. I love my new home office." "Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for so ably applying your professional expertise in turning my home into a very pleasant and attractive environment."
Ann F. & Delin S. Pittsford, New York, June 2012
"Dear Dan and Naomi, Thank you both for the house makeover, it looked beautiful! As a designer myself, I appreciate more what Naomi did for us. She quickly diagnosed the issues regarding color, furniture layout and what’s needed for more visual excitement in each room. She communicated clearly and executed her vision (for interior staging) with great efficiency and enthusiasm. She worked around our budget and was sensitive to our very tight timeline. Additionally, Naomi gave us useful, practical advices on landscaping, cleaning and on the proper way to hang the artwork (we thought we knew…). We are so pleased with the result, thanks so much for your help!"
Elisa M. North Chili, New York, September 2011
“I have to admit the idea of an Interior Designer coming to my home sounded like an added expense, but one I did agree is a good investment. What I did not expect was that it ended up being a fantastic investment since the ideas and solutions saved us money and actually more than covered the design consultation costs. Our home-office was not an inviting or fully functional space for more than one person before it was redesigned. Dan and Naomi designed the space including its multi-function desk with care and sensitivity to our needs, and with special attention to the style we preferred. Their efforts resulted in a room we love to spend time in, an interior space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing for us. The experience working with INVISION DESIGN PARTNERS was amazing and I find we have a new addition to our home that we are able to enjoy and use more often than before. True quality act!”
Sue F. Conesus Lake, New York, June 2011
"Dear Naomi and Dan: Wow. It is difficult to articulate how appreciative we are for your support, genius and energy. Plus, an added bonus is the smile on my face every time I think about what a team we were and how much fun we had in so little time. You were both so easy to work with, but firm when it came to your professional skills and experience. You were right about every suggestion even before it was evident to me and when I was unsure about things. We accomplished so much in so little time and sold our house sooooooooooooo quickly. Tomorrow we are leaving for our next phase of life and you played a hand in that happening and for that we are thankful. You are first on my list to call when we purchase or sell again!!!!!" - Sue
