In the early 1900’s, the Hutchinson family sold everything they owned in Iowa and moved to California to take up farming. One generation later, Richard Hutchinson Hopper grew up on the rural outskirts of Los Angeles. An Eagle Scout by age 16, Richard was an avid outdoorsman and scholar. He graduated from UCLA with a BS & MS in Geology and then went on to earn his PhD from Caltech in 1937. His final dissertation was on a cross-section of land ranging from the Sierra Nevada foothills to Death Valley, and is seen on the entire wall behind the bar. Richard’s wife, and our beloved grandmother, Renee, learned to cook an Indonesian rijsttafel over sixty-five years ago in the sweltering remains of post-war Jakarta. She passed down these traditional dishes to our mother, Lois. These recipes have fed generations of our family and friends the world over. Our aim is to provide you with that experience as we pay homage to our family here in California and their explorations abroad.
