What Exactly is Acupuncture?
What Exactly is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a uniquely effective part of Chinese medicine. Utilizing tiny stainless steel needles, your acupuncturist stimulates specific "acupuncture points" to correct imbalances inside the body. This system of medicine uses your vital energy (Qi) flow, directing it along it's pathways (meridians). This enables the body to achieve long lasting positive effects by "teaching" it how to naturally heal itself. Acupuncture is a safe and effective alternative to surgical procedures and medications and can treat anyone of any age and condition- even pregnant women or seriously ill patients. Results may be seen very quickly, in as little as 1 or 2 treatments, although chronic conditions may require a series of treatments.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbology is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and can be used alone, or to complement acupuncture treatments.
Herbs are powerful medicinal substances that can accelerate and strengthen the healing process. There are over 10,000 substances in the modern Chinese materia medica, including various parts of plants such as leaves, flowers, seeds or roots.
Chinese herbal medicine is the use of Chinese medicinals to create formulas based on the specific needs of the patient.
Chinese medicinals are usually plant or mineral based products chosen in accordance with Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and concepts.Chinese medicinals are usually plant or mineral based products chosen in accordance with Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and concepts.
We use mainly powdered herbs.
These are previously decocted medicinals that we customize and formulate on site to ensure the accuracy of the formula. We may also prescribe raw herb formulas, capsuled herbs or tea-pills, depending on the need of each patient.
Only trained and licensed professionals of Traditional Chinese Medicine are able to prescribe and dispense Chinese herbs, as they are pharmaceutical grade and extremely potent.
They have limited side effects and your Herbal practitioner knows how to safely administer Chinese Medicinals, so they are safe for all types of people including pregnant women, children and those taking medications.
Most herbal formulas are prescribed at a dosage of 1 to 3 times a day for several months, depending on how long a person has been dealing with a pattern.
What is the Difference between Chinese Herbal Medicine and Western Herbalism?
Western folk herbalism primarily treats diseases or symptoms, such as headaches, runny nose, menstrual pain, etc.
Chinese herbal medicine, when practice as part of TCM, is based on an individualized pattern diagnosis as well as a disease diagnosis.
This means the TCM patient receives a custom written herbal prescription designed to treat both the symptoms and also their individual pattern.
Such a TCM pattern is made up of a patient signs and symptoms as well as their emotional temperament and bodily constitution.
Holistic Medicine in Pregnancy and Childbirth
As this ever changing world continues to get more complicated by modern technology and medicine, more and more women are choosing natural methods to aid them in experiencing health and well-being through their pregnancies and births. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used in China for thousands of years to help regulate the female reproductive system and can be combined easily with modern midwifery to achieve balance and health for women during their entire birthing journey from pre-conception to post-partum.
Healthy Pregnancy
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help the body to achieve a healthy balance and regular pre-natal visits can help to maintain this with monthly or weekly acupuncture treatments tailored specifically to each woman's individual needs. Acupuncture several weeks before your due date can help reduce the risks of going too far past the due date. We call this "Pre-Birth Acupuncture." Postpartum Care
After a baby is born it is extremely important to replenish the energy and health of the mother. Natural Fertility Assistance
Acupuncture has been used in China for 5,000 years to aid in healing infertility and now in the United States is widely used for fertility challenges.
Almost 12% of women face fertility concerns of some kind and the solutions are limited. Many women do not want to utilize hormone altering medications or procedures that may be risky or invasive. Many just want a place to start.
Chinese Medicine helps with fertility concerns by regulating the menstrual cycle
aiding in healing thyroid conditions, improving the quality of eggs and sperm and reducing cysts or other occlusions blocking the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.
The benefits to using Chinese Medicine by itself to conceive
are: Limited or no side effects; Effective in regulating the menstrual cycle; Relaxing and non-invasive treatments; Individualized treatments, modified to fit each individual; Cost effective: Overall costs 70% less than 1 cycle of IVF; Emotional support by the practitioner.
Western Fertility Disorders Commonly Treated with Chinese Medicine
PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome); Endometriosis; Ovarian or Uterine Cysts; Hypothyroidism; Irregular Menstrual Cycles or Amennorhea; Poor Sperm Motility or Count; Poor Egg Quality; Recurring Miscarriage; Luteal Phase Defect.
Acupuncture + In Vitro Fertilization
Acupuncture can increase IVF success by 40-60% and is a pleasant and cost-effective way to supplement western fertility treatments. Acupuncture treatments are scheduled in a specific duration around the medications and procedures of IVF and IUI to boost the body's response to these medications, minimize side effects and correct underlying imbalances that may be preventing conception.
What Acupuncture Does during IVF Treatments
Helps open the cervix at appropriate times to minimize procedure discomfort; Prevents uterus from contracting after procedure; Increases hormones such as progesterone by balancing certain systems in the body; Reduces stress levels and aids in emotional wellness; Aids in the production of healthy follicles and uterine lining; Reduces side effects of medications such as headaches and sleeplessness; Helps to prevent miscarriage by continuing to heal root problems in the body systems.
When Acupuncture is done during IVF Treatments:
Treatments can begin any time in the IVF cycle, but is recommended several months in advance. Treatments are given once a week until egg retrieval. At this time, a treatment is also done within 24 hours before retrieval, within 24 hours before transfer and within 24 hours after transfer.
Treatments for Men during IVF
It is also beneficial for the partners to receive treatment for maximum success, especially if the conception challenges are related to sperm quality or count. Treatments are decided based on each individual case, but also circulate around procedures. Herbal medicine is usually prescribed for cases involving male concerns to increase sperm count and improve quality as well as adjust PH levels.

Nutritional Healing
Food is our first medicine! It sounds cliche, but most health conditions are the result of many years of poor food and lifestyle choices. The human gastrointestinal system plays a huge role in our overall health. Our intestines contain more immune cells than the entire rest of our body. Nutritional deficiencies, food allergies and food sensitivities play a huge role in a host of conditions including, infertility, irritable bowel, constipation, acid reflux, cancer, fatigue, autoimmune disorders, allergies, chronic urinary tract infections, acne, anxiety, depression, insomnia, pain, mood swings, ADD/ADHD. Our goal is teach and inspire our patients how to incorporate good nutritional habits into their busy lives. We start by having every new client keep a five day food diary. We can then help guide our patients to make diet and lifestyle changes that will help the body heal. We have a blog called Physicians Living Healthy where we share our own stories of the rewards and challenges of eating healthy. Nutrition classes are available.
Auto-Immune Disorders
The combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbals, lifestyle and diet changes can make a huge difference in managing your auto-immune disease. There are over 80 types of auto-immune diseases. Some share the same symptoms, so getting a western diagnosis can be frustrating and stressful. Many patients are prescribed medications to decrease pain and inflammation but these medications cause severe unwanted side effects and do not get to the root cause of the problem. Traditional Chinese herbals are prescribed on an individual basis with no side effects. Not only do the herbs help reduce pain and calm the inflammation, they also treat the root imbalance. When we treat the imbalance that caused the hyper activation of the immune system, we can then reduce the recurrence of flare ups. Infection and exposure to environmental toxins can trigger the immune system to attack itself. We assess foods, environmental exposures, latent or current viruses, and even supplements that could be exasperating your condition.
Pre-Birth Acupuncture
As the beautiful day of birth approaches, many expecting mothers wonder wha they can do to prepare their bodies for labor. Aside from proper nutrition and excercise, there are holistic and nurturing ways to enable the body to approach labor in timely manner and help it succeed in a pleasent, shorter birth. Starting at 36 weeks (or before if there are health concerns), Pre-labor acupuncture is started at once a week intervals to help the body ripen the cervix, open the pelvis, relax the mind and guide baby in to optimal birth position. This treatment plan is especially recommended for mothers who have had a previous post-dates baby, chemical induction or who are planning a Vaginal Birth After Cessarian. Women who follow this gentle protocol, rarely need medical or natural labor induction methods, as we are encouraging the body's natural hormones to release gradually. Debra Betts, an acupuncturist and midwife in New Zealand, has a very nice resource on optimal birth position here. http://acupuncture.rhizome.net.nz/FoetalPositioning.aspx
Acupuncture for Labor
Acupuncture During Birth. A woman's body is perfectly capable of birthing a baby all on its own without any intervention, but the small percent of women who may need intervention can use acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for natural assistance. Some of these needs might be: Malpresentation, Labor Discomfort, Anxiety, Fatigue, Difficult Labor. Acupuncture is a fantastic alternative to Pitocin and other medications for labor augmentation. It also has analgesic qualities and the ability to help calm a birthing mother. Crystal has many years of experience working with midwives and obstetric physicians in hospital, birth center or homebirth settings to help with these challenges. Prolonged labor or back labor can be resolved very quickly with acupuncture and can help birthing mothers avoid other interventions. Note: These services are available only if Crystal has the capability of attending. If you wish for her to guarantee her availability, you will be required to sign Doula contracts and different fees apply.
Natural Labor Induction
Acupuncture is a gentle, safe alternative to artificial induction of labor. Using specific acupuncture points, we gently encourage the body to produce labor hormones and start contractions. At the same time, we are assessing any positional problems or other factors that could be leading to a delay in the start of labor. This treatment can be done also if the membranes have released (water broken) and labor hasn't yet started or is moving slowly. Acupuncture may take as little as a few hours to take effect or up to 72 hours and can be done several times in a row if necessary. Herbal medicines, homeopathics or other natural techniques may be recommended to aid this treatment. The closer you are to passing your "due date," the more likely this treatment is to work. The treatment is only effective if your body is ready and is not recommended previous to 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes.
Weight Management
The most important thing to remember is that there is NO magic and instant way to loose weight. The only way to manage weight healthily is to assess why a person is gaining weight then treat the root cause. Chinese Medicine plays a very important role in treating the underlying conditions to weight gain: Hormone Imbalances, Emotional Imbalances/Stress, Menopause, Post-Pregnancy Weight, Digestive Issues, Diabetes/Sugar Imbalances, Food Allergies and Sensitivities, Autoimmune Disorders, Misconceptions of a healthy diet. In addition to treating the underlying cause, the physicians at Holistic Women and Families are very skilled in providing each individual with a specific nutrition plan. Dawn and Crystal have both gone through a journey personally with nutrition, so they are able to understand on an emotional level what your needs are as well.
Menopause
When natural changes become uncomfortable, there is something out of balance within the body. When the body is functioning properly in that balance, menopause should be almost unnoticeable. Chinese Medicine helps to correct these imbalances so that you can enjoy being a woman! On average, most women feel their symptoms reduce or diminish in as little as 6 weeks. Symptoms of menopause that could mean your body is not in balance are: Insomnia, Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Weight Gain, Depression, Aching Joints, Anxiety, Vaginal or skin dryness, Low Lobido, Irregular Periods.
Stress and Emotional Health
When we are healthy and stress is temporary, we recover quickly and our body stays in balance. However when the stress is extreme or lasts a long time, our emotional and physical health suffers. Chinese medicine recognizes the relationship between our physical body and our emotions. Physical symptoms affect the emotions and emotional upset causes physical symptoms. Stress is a major cause of many of the emotional imbalances that people suffer from today in our fast paced lives. Acupuncture and herbs can bring lasting balance to those suffering from stress, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, sleep disturbances, palpitations, hormone imbalances, tension headaches, addictions, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Mood-elevating medications can mask the problem and cause unwanted side effects while claiming to alleviate symptoms. Acupuncture not only has an immediate effect of calming the mind and relaxing the body but it also breaks the cycle of imbalance. Acupuncture increases the production of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that are important to emotional balance. With diet changes, acupuncture and herbal medicine you can find a peaceful focused emotional balance.

Gynecological Problems Commonly Treated with Chinese Medicine: Irregular Menstruation, Amenorrhea, Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, PMS/PMDD, Painful Periods, Vaginal Itching/ Yeast Infections, STD's, Endometriosis, PCOS, Infertility, Menopause.
Cupping Therapy
We use cupping therapy to treat pain, increase blood flow, detoxify and for the deep relaxation of our patients. Cupping is safe, comfortable and remarkably effective for many health disorders. It's the use of suction, rather than compression for bodywork ranging from myofascia release to lymphatic drainage. Cupping rapidly facilitates rigid soft tissue release, loosens and lifts connective tissue, breaks up and drains stagnation while increasing blood and lymph flow to skin and muscles. When the cups move, the negative pressure feels great. The pulling action engages the parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deep relaxation to move through the entire body. People often feel relaxed, warm and light hourssometimes days afterward. Cupping is used for traumatic injuries, stubborn orthopedic conditions, deep tissue and sports massage, trigger points, lymphatic drainage, abdominal massage, neurological dysfunctions.
Functional Blood Analysis
Are you still not feeling healthy even though your blood work came back normal? Pathological lab ranges are based on bio markers that are used to diagnose disease based on population averages. As people get sicker, lab ranges get broader. There is variations in what is considered normal from lab to lab as well. Functional lab ranges are used to assess risk for disease before it develops. The bio markers are based on optimal health standards. Being healthy means not only being free of disease but also having adequate energy levels, healthy digestion and balanced emotional well being. We practice disease prevention by screening and identifying metabolic imbalances and making diet, nutrition, lifestyle and supplement recommendations based on these findings. Today, because of limitations due to insurance, your medical doctor may order a limited number of tests, so you may not be getting a broad picture of your overall health. We can do an analysis based on the blood work you have if it is less than 3 months old. If you dont have blood work or do not have the appropriate biomarkers, we can order the proper test for you. Comprehensive Bio- Screen Blood Profile-metabolic panel, CBC, full thyroid panel, lipid profile, Vitamind D, A1c, inflammatory markers and urinalysis are analyzed from a functional medicine reference range. Many times a patient's blood work results are within the labs normal reference range but symptoms are indicating a health issue. We will analyze your blood work results within functional ranges which can help us find patterns of imbalance that can be causing the symptoms. Cost $199.00 plus report of findings consult.
Nutrition for Fertility and Pregnancy
Preparing your body for pregnancy is one of the most important things you can do for your future baby. If you are already pregnant, increasing nutrient dense foods in your diet will help to insure your baby gets off to a healthy start. A well nourished pregnant woman will have more energy and better health throughout their pregnancy.
Holistic Pediatric Medicine
Children have a special energy, much more sensitive and unobstructed then ours as adults, therefor respond amazingly to holistic medical practices. Using TCM diagnostic techniques we can assess a child's condition and then use non-invasive, gentle techniques to help resolve the problem. We accept children of all ages from birth to 18 with a parent or guardian present. Some of the techniques we may use are: Herbal Medicine, Nutritional Supplements or Homeopathy; Nutritional Counseling; Tui-Na/Acupressure; Cupping Therapy; Pediatric Acupuncture (6 and older according to child). Many children have found relief from our physicians from: Teething and Colic; Failure to Thrive, Malnutrition; Stomach/GI Concerns; Colds and Flus; Hormonal and Endocrine Disorders; Autism/ADHD; Sports Injuries; Male and Female Puberty Concerns; Emotional Disorders.
Men's Health
Men are an important part of our families and practice! Don't let our name fool you! We treat men for pain, digestive issues, hormone balancing, allergies, stress, diabetes, infertility and more.
General Medicine
We diagnose our patients based on a Chinese medical diagnosis which is determined by using the following information: "Looking" includes observation of the patient's facial color, the characteristics of the tongue (its color, shape, and movement), the patient's general physical proportions and posture, and secretions such as urine, stool, phlegm, and vomit. "Listening and Smelling" primarily involve observation of the quality of the voice and of bodily odors. In "Asking," a practitioner collects information about the patient's sensations of cold and heat, the location of pain, sleep patterns, thirst and appetite, gynecological information, the characteristics of the patients urine, stool, phlegm and any past medical history. "Touching" is considered the most important aspect of the TCM examination and may include the feeling of pulse, which indicates the functioning of a different aspects of the body. Having a western diagnosis and western medical testing results can help us in our diagnosing but it is not necessary. People with the same western medical diagnosis may present with different signs and symptoms resulting in a different Chinese medical diagnosis. Each persons acupuncture treatment and herbal formula is based on their individual signs and symptoms.
Pain Therapy
Acupuncture can provide immediate relief for chronic and acute pain. Depending on the condition, acupuncture is often used in conjunction with cupping, homeopathic injections, herbal medicine, topical medicinal oils and moxibustion. These modalities not only reduce pain and inflammation but facilitate the healing process and repair the damaged tissue. We are also trained in a particular type of acupuncture called Battlefield Acupuncture that has been developed and used successfully in the military for chronic pain. http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=62053 Homeopathic Injections We use FDA approved homeopathic injection safe remedies for pain. The products are a sophisticated blend of vitamins, minerals and biochemicals that provide a safe alternative to anti-inflammatory steroids. Clinically we have found excellent results with homeopathic injections of Heel Traumeel and Heel Zeel for joint, neck, and back pain, arthritis and sports injuries. Research indicates that Traumeel injections are as effective for pain as conventional treatments including narcotic painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years. A practitioner lights one end of a moxa stick, similar in shape and size of a cigar, and holds it close to the area being treated for several minutes until the area is warm.
Addiction Therapy
Acupuncture has been used since the early 70?s as an important adjunct therapy for helping people overcome their addictions and deal with post traumatic stress successfully. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association is a world wide organization offering acupuncture for addiction and post traumatic stress via the court systems, hospitals and addiction centers throughout the country. Many military hospitals use acupuncture as an integral part of their successful treatment of military veterans. Many people turn to drugs and alcohol as a way of dealing with stress, pain and trauma. With this simple 5-point ear acupuncture NADA protocol we are capable of helping people calm, relax and begin to learn to manage their stress. We offer this supportive therapy for our patients who have made the commitment to overcoming their addictions and manage their stress. It reduces cravings, calms the mind, helps increase will power and alleviate fears and facilitates the bodies detoxification pathways. http://www.military-medical-veterans-affairs-forum.com

Thermography
Our Thermography Imaging is with Kristen Burton, CNHP, CCT. Call our office at (386) 872-5757 to set up your next appointment.
There's a new diagnostic high-tech tool that specifically measures inflammation
It's called thermal-imaging or Thermography. This tool creates a digital map of your body that illustrates heat patterns-patterns that may detect some condition or abnormality. Unlike most diagnostic tests, thermal imaging is not painful, non-invasive, and it's quick. Also, it makes no contact with your body and emits absolutely NO RADIATION. Digital Infrared Thermal - Imaging is a unique technology that takes a picture and creates a map of the infrared patterns of the body.It can detect early danger signs in the body years before other tools. For example, it has been shown to be effective in finding early signs of breast disease up to 8 years before mammography may detect it.

Thermograpy screens can assess several potential health conditions
Including arthritis, neck and back pain, dental issues, immune dysfunction, breast health and more.Thermography is particularly beneficial for breast health. and has been comprehensively researched for over 30 years. While it is not a replacement for Mammography, it may have many valuable assets including:earlier detection of neovascular patterns, adjust to inconclusive mammograms, improved detection for women with dense breasts or implants, or a reasonable alternative for women who chose not to get mammograms.
Imaging Offered
Breast Imaging: $185- 30 minutes
includes 8 images of your breast at all angles. Breast imaging is especially important as it detects inflammatory changes that may indicate unhealthy breasts. It is at the inflammatory stage that simple preventive protocols can help clear the inflammation and return your breasts to a more healthy state.
Women's Health Screening: $375-45 minutes
includes 8 images of breasts PLUS head and neck views to examine for the signs of allergies, sinus problems, causes of headaches, dental and gum diseases, thyroid and carotid artery inflammation (early signs of cardiovascular disease.) In addition, the chest and upper back are are examined for further signs of developing heart problems and the abdomen to examine liver, spleen, female organs and digestion. The trunk of your body is also examined from head to waist to spot patterns that may travel throughout your body. Did you know that a woman is 10x more likely to experience heart or cardiovascular diseases than breast diseases? Without thermorgraphy there is currently no way to detect the early signs of most diseases that actually begin with inflammation are easily seen with thermography.
Full Body: $495- 1 hour
Imaging is from head to toe. This images everything that is included in the Women's Health Screening including a full breast study PLUS arms, hands, legs and feet. A Full Body Scan is very important because of the potential to see so much in the arms and the legs. Blood sugar challenges in the hand and unknown varicose in the legs as well as other disease conditions can be seen. The feet are important to image as heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, weight transfer problems and more can also be seen.

Chinese Medicine plays a very important role in treating the underlying conditions to weight gain: Hormone Imbalances; Emotional Imbalances/Stress; Menopause; Post-Pregnancy Weight; Digestive Issues; Diabetes/Sugar Imbalances; Food Allergies and Sensitivities; Autoimmune Disorders; Misconceptions of a healthy diet.
In addition to treating the underlying cause, the physicians at Holistic Women and Families are very skilled in providing each individual with a specific nutrition plan.
Dawn and Crystal have both gone through a journey personally with nutrition, so they are able to understand on an emotional level what your needs are as well.
We call this "Pre-Birth Acupuncture." Pregnancy Challenges
Sometimes pregnancy brings challenges and complications and acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help alleviate or correct these using methods that are safe for both mom and baby. Some of these challenges include: Morning Sickness, Back Pain, Sciatica, Breech Presentation, Anxiety, Fatigue, Heartburn, Insomnia, Constipation, Edema, Urinary Infections, Early Contractions, Colds/Flu.
Acupuncture During Birth
A woman's body is perfectly capable of birthing a baby all on its own without any intervention, but the small percent of women who may need intervention can use acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for natural assistance. Some of these needs might be: Malpresentation, Labor Discomfort, Anxiety, Fatigue, Difficult Labor.
Postpartum Care
After a baby is born it is extremely important to replenish the energy and health of the mother. There are many changes both physically and emotionally that take place during pregnancy and childbirth and acupuncture and Chinese medicine can provide support naturally for this time as well as treat conditions associated with postpartum. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can treat: Mastitis, Insufficient Lactation, Excessive Lactation, Postpartum Depression, Edema, Postpartum Bleeding, Hemorrhoids, Constipation, Fatigue, Insomnia.
Acupuncture and Midwifery
Although acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used in a western medical obstetric setting, the philosophy in Chinese medicine compliments the Midwifery model of care. Our belief in Chinese Medicine is that each person is an individual, intricate being and should be treated in whatever way works with her body. Rather than force the process, we gently flow with it to provide each woman with her own optimal experience.

Chinese Pediatric Massage
We teach you how to help your baby…. There is a special form of infant massage in Chinese Medicine called pediatric Tui-Na. It involves the same meridians that we use for acupuncture and incorporates them in to massage protocols developed for many common infant problems. Chinese therapeutic massage can aid in the treatment of: Teething, Colic, Constipation, Failure to Thrive, Cough and Colds, Asthma, Skin Conditions, other health conditions. Pediatric Tui-Na is completely safe and non-invasive. The techniques can often be administered while baby is sleeping or feeding. Schedule your infant for a session and we will show you how to perform these techniques on your baby daily for maximum results. Because infants respond quickly to gentle and natural techniques, most conditions heal in just a few sessions.

Doula Services
What is a Doula?
The word Doula is an ancient Greek word for Woman-Servant. In our modern birthing culture it refers to a professionally trained woman who provides support to the laboring family. This support is often described as unconditional, emotional, physical, and informational support.
Why Hire a Doula?
The process of labor and birthing creates a vulnerable time in a couple's relationship and the growth of the family. The support of a Doula can ease the transition with both emotional and physical comfort measures. The pressure is taken off the couple to ?remember everything?. And they can focus on each other and the task at hand. The Doula is there to answer questions, act as your advocate and create confidence. All members of the family are served by the Doula. Birth is a transitional experience encompassing mind, body, and spirit. Calm assurance from a Doula allows a woman to build confidence in her body?s abilities. During pregnancy we are available to our clients to answer questions and discuss concerns. We can provide nurturing and practical information and help you clarify your desires about birth and newborn care. We will help you prepare by teaching you how to communicate your desires with your care providers. During labor and birth we will suggest and implement practical ways to cope with the challenges of labor and birth so the mother and family will feel more relaxed and in control. After labor and birth we are available to provide the continued emotional and informational support that can make the difference in your baby?s first week?s of life.
Doula Advantages
Studies show that women who are accompanied by a Doula in childbirth
Have lower rates of Cesarean
Are often more satisfied with their birth experiences
Feel more confident
Are more likely to interact closely with their infants
Less likely to have postpartum depression
Mothers who are cared for by Doulas are much more likely to initiate and continue breastfeeding, and have fewer newborns with complications
What is HypnoBirthing®?
HypnoBirthing will prepare you with the confidence and knowledge you need for gentle birth, knowing that you are informed and ready to make the best labor and birth decisions and ready to avoid unnecessary interventions. Doctors and Midwifes love it! Safer, faster, healthier labor, for you and your baby! The original and gold standard in preparation for birth. Comprehensive birthing class that fully prepares you for birth with the knowledge and confidence you need to birth calmly and gently. "When you change the way you view birth, the way you birth will change." - Marie F. Mongan
HypnoBirthing® is based on the philosophy that when a woman is properly prepared for childbirth free from fear and stress
she can allow her body to function in the same well-designed manner that it does in nature.
HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is as much a philosophy as it is a technique.
The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a "rebirth" of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who, in the 1920s, was one of the first to forward the concept of natural birthing. The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.
You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth.
You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.
When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep.
What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.
You will be conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed
but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body's surges and your baby's progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body's natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.
When you complete our class you and your partner will be knowledgeable, empowered, and ready to birth and welcome your baby into the world without fear and with confidence.

Birthing With Love – Replacing fear with confidence
Women's bodies are designed to birth naturally and confidently. Birth is a cause for celebration, joy, possibly the most beautiful experience of your life. The course will prepare you for natural birth, and to make an educated, confident decision should you need an intervention. The vast majority of women feel so prepared and empowered by HypnoBirthing® that they have fully natural, un-medicated, un-intervened births. HypnoBirthing® provides you with the knowledge you need to feel confident, and the techniques to remain calm and in control during your birth, just as nature intended. Birth with love and joy!
Much of what we hear about birth from those around us
even from well meaning friends, doctors, and the media, sends the message that birth has to be painful and fraught with dangers.
These stories can create fear and tension in the mother's mind and body
which can inhibit the natural process of birth, which in many cases can lead to stalled labor and otherwise unnecessary interventions.
HypnoBirthing's focus is on deep relaxation
working with the body, working with the birthing instincts, releasing fear, and replacing it with confidence and trust in the birth process.
Because many women have been conditioned to associate extreme pain with birth, many women are deeply afraid of giving birth.
Fear creates tension, which stops the body's natural ability to perform the normal, physiological function of giving birth. Fear can lead to unnecessary pain and intervention.
HypnoBirthing® will, through education, help you eliminate the cultural negativity surrounding birth.
You will find the knowledge to break free from these erroneous misconceptions that don't benefit you or your baby. You will discover that childbirth free of fear is a comfortable, joyous, celebratory experience.
During birth, the body is designed to produce hormones to bring you joy
increase attachment to your baby and those around you, and to birth with ease. This happens when the body and the mind are relaxed and welcoming of birth. You birth with joy and attachment.
If fear or stress is brought into the birth, adrenaline
the fight or flight hormone, is released and your body clenches, tightens and in many cases stops the birth all together. This is how the body reacts to fear; it protects the child from danger by postponing the birth.
Our HypnoBirthing® childbirth class will thoroughly prepare you.
It is a comprehensive birthing class that fully prepares you for birth with the knowledge and confidence you need to birth calmly and gently.
What Is Hypnosis?
When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will be totally relaxed, but fully in control. Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxed concentration and focus. What you experience with HypnoBirthing® is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book, staring at a fire, or are driving a car. You will be fully in control and able to carry on normal conversation. You can remain in touch with the instruction, encouragement and support of your birthing companion. You will be aware of your surges (contractions), but you will feel relaxed and calm. Your body's natural anesthesia (endorphins) will replace the stress hormones that create pain. Without fear and tension, you will be able to work in harmony with your body. You can be awake and aware throughout the birthing. At the moment of birth you can fully experience all the intense feelings and sensations of the miraculous moment and begin to bond immediately with your baby. With HypnoBirthing® you will be:
Alert and aware
Interactive and conversant
Fully in control
Relaxed and calm
More rested, during and after the birth
Natural Fertility Assistance
Acupuncture has been used in China for 5,000 years to aid in healing infertility and now in the United States is widely used for fertility challenges. Almost 12% of women face fertility concerns of some kind and the solutions are limited. Many women do not want to utilize hormone altering medications or procedures that may be risky or invasive. Many just want a place to start. Chinese Medicine helps with fertility concerns by regulating the menstrual cycle, aiding in healing thyroid conditions, improving the quality of eggs and sperm and reducing cysts or other occlusions blocking the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.
The benefits to using Chinese Medicine by itself to conceive
are:
Limited or no side effects
Effective in regulating the menstrual cycle
Relaxing and non-invasive treatments
Individualized treatments, modified to fit each individual
Cost effective: Overall costs 70% less than 1 cycle of IVF
Emotional support by the practitioner
Western Fertility Disorders Commonly Treated with Chinese Medicine
PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome)
Endometriosis
Ovarian or Uterine Cysts
Hypothyroidism
Irregular Menstrual Cycles or Amennorhea
Poor Sperm Motility or Count
Poor Egg Quality
Recurring Miscarriage
Luteal Phase Defect
Acupuncture + In Vitro Fertilization
Acupuncture can increase IVF success by 40-60% and is a pleasant and cost-effective way to supplement western fertility treatments. Acupuncture treatments are scheduled in a specific duration around the medications and procedures of IVF and IUI to boost the body’s response to these medications, minimize side effects and correct underlying imbalances that may be preventing conception.
What Acupuncture Does during IVF Treatments
Helps open the cervix at appropriate times to minimize procedure discomfort
Prevents uterus from contracting after procedure
Increases hormones such as progesterone by balancing certain systems in the body
Reduces stress levels and aids in emotional wellness
Aids in the production of healthy follicles and uterine lining
