The name Hapuku comes from the name of a river in Kaikoura, New Zealand, a small town on the South Island about a three-hour drive north of the capital, Christchurch. In fact, the Hapuku River is the southern boundary of the Wilson's family farm in New Zealand. Hapuku, in the indigenous Maori language, means "big-bellied fish," or Grouper. And the reason the local Maori tribe named the river Hapuku is because there was a large rock jutting out of the ocean in alignment with the mouth of the river, and they knew that if they fished near that rock, they would catch Grouper. And so, in the Wilsons' effort to tie their Rockridge business back to their native New Zealand, Hapuku Fish Shop was born.
