Hamakaze means ‘onshore wind’ — wind blowing from the sea to the land. Offshore winds make for the best surfing conditions — that’s when you’ll usually find me in the water. During onshore winds, I’d rather be in the kitchen. Hamakaze, which soft-opened February 27th, 2009, specializes in sushi and izakaya items — Japanese tapas style small plates of “peasant food” like Sautéed Shishito Peppers, Kakuni Pork Belly and free-range black pork Kurobota Sausage. Alongside traditional fare, the menu also features my own flavorful concoctions such as Angel Wings —spicy tuna and avocado stuffed into folds of pickled daikon radish “paper.”, served shiso pesto and chili sauce Still, these offbeat offerings take a back seat to streamlined elegance: simple but perfect preparation, seasonal ingredients, the very freshest fish, and exceptionally prepared rice.
