Haig is an Armenian who immigrated from Istanbul, Turkey to San Francisco, California in the mid-fifties. He founded Haig's Delicacies in 1956, on a small corner in San Francisco's Richmond District, immediately creating a buzz as a place to find rare and unique spices, teas, coffees, and gifts. It was also one of the only places in San Francisco to find a falafel sandwich at the time! James Beard was a frequent visitor to Haig's Delicacies and often wrote about this new international foods shop and its unique offerings.
