The Longsword
The longsword is the first weapon that most student are introduced to. Despite its relatively simple design, the history of the longsword's use in battle is a clear indicator of its utility. It was used from approximately 1350 through 1550, with some sources showing it used as late as the 17th century. This span of at least 200 years is massive when compared to the length of time that modern weapons are used in battle for. Kron also has names for both edges of the blade. The side facing away from the fencer when held in the middle guard or roof position is the long edge. The edge facing the fencer is the short edge. One of the first people to research longsword shapes and designs was Ewart Oakeshott, who was both historian and an illustrator. In 1960 he released The Archeology of Weapons: Arms and Armour from Prehistory to the Age of Chivalry, which contains what is known as the "Oakeshott Typology". The Oakeshott Typology exhibits the most common shapes and designs of longswords found throughout history. Fee: $90 per month. All equipment provided.
Historic Longsword clases begin the week of Sept. 1st and meet year-round.
