Since the mid-1980s, brothers Barry and Steven Gruber have founded, owned, and operated Gruby’s New York Deli.
Accompanying their full time interests in the film industry and U.S. Navy, Barry and Steven worked in their father’s New York meat and deli market from the late 1960s. Starting in the kitchen and in the dining room, they learned the business from the ground up. In the early 1980s, their family moved from New York to Hilton Head, SC, where Barry continued in food service management as well as career pursuits in production management while Steven was employed by an inter-regional meat wholesaler and later Hebrew National Kosher Foods.
The brothers’ connections and knowledge of the meat and deli business grew exponentially until 1986, when they realized the potential for a unique niche and created the first Gruby’s New York Deli on Hilton Head Island. Combining their experiences and focusing on local needs, Barry and Steven created an immediate success, and in the early part of this century, Barry relocated to Atlanta, GA to open and manage their second location.
Due to cuisine and business approaches unique to New York style, Gruby’s New York Deli has become an icon in their respective areas in the southern states. Celebrated by guests who enjoy extraordinary atmosphere, foods, and tradition, Gruby’s has become an appreciated dining establishment offering exceptional deli foods in the New York custom.
