Creative Writing 101
This course includes both fiction and nonfiction prose. The 101 courses do not include workshopping of student projects, but students write and receive feedback on writing exercises and assignments.
Here you will be guided surely and safely into the writing life.
There's no pressure to work on a specific project or even settle on which type of creative writing you prefer. The idea is to exploresee with a writer's eyes, spark ideas to life, gain confidence, and experiment with both fiction and nonfiction.
Creative writing is one of the most fulfilling ways to express yourself, and you're never too young or too old to give it a try.

Level I - Creative Writing 101 - 6 Week Workshop
Creative Writing 101 is for beginners or anyone who wants a refresher. In this six-week course, you will find:
Exercises that stretch your writing in various directions
A wealth of ideas to pursue and strategies for finding new ideas

Fiction Writing Classes
Fiction I encompasses short stories and novels. After Level I, students have a choice of Fiction II/III (focusing on short stories), or Novel II (focusing on novels). If you are working on "genre" fiction, you may take either a Fiction/Novel course or one of our genre courses: Science Fiction & Fantasy, Romance, Mystery. If you are working on a YA novel, you may take a Fiction/Novel or "genre" course, or you may take a Children's Book course, where the full spectrum of children's books will be covered.
Fiction is a wonderful conjuring act.
With only words and the reader's imagination, a work of fiction can sail across the world in pursuit of a whale, or time-travel to another dimension, or zero in on a few minutes in line at the local bank, enveloping the reader in a made-up story that feels real.
To pull off this feat requires a balance of craftsmanship, daring, and insight into human nature.

In a clear, accessible manner, the course presents the fundamentals of plot, structure, voice, description, character development, point of view, and dialogue.
Lectures and writing exercises are used to illustrate these concepts. You will also have the opportunity to present your work and receive feedback from your instructor and classmates. The goal is to write two short stories or to begin a novel and to acquire a firm understanding of all the basics of fiction writing.
Fiction I is for beginners or anyone who wants to brush up on the fundamentals.
Beginners who wish to write novels should take Fiction I before Advanced Novel Writing.

The course focuses on the presentation and critique of your work and is designed to help you sharpen your skills.
Emphasis is placed on honing each story's structure, characterization, narrative, description, and style with the aim of creating publishable work.
Advanced Fiction Writing is for writers who have completed Level I or those
with fiction-writing experience who are prepared to discuss all of the fundamental concepts of the craft. Writers often repeat Advanced Fiction Writing as they continue to develop projects.
We offer Advanced Fiction for writers working on short stories and Novel Writing II for writers working on novels.
You are, however, welcome to work on material in Advanced Fiction that would eventually end up in a novel.

The Fiction Level III focuses on workshopping short stories.
All students are veterans in the workshop process, and each story is read and discussed in detail over a two-week period, giving the writers a plenitude of helpful feedback. In addition to the workshopping, each week the instructor leads students through a discussion of some tantalizing new topic. Writers often repeat Fiction Writing Level III to continue their projects.

Memoir Writing Classes
A memoir is similar to a personal essay; both incorporate elements from the writer's life. But a personal essay focuses more on the viewpoint, and a memoir focuses more on the story. Gotham also offers courses on Essay & Opinion Writing and an Intensive on Personal Essay Writing.

Character Development Classes
This is a cross-genre course, applicable to any kind of writing that contains characters, including nonfiction.
Characters are the beating heart of every story
fiction, nonfiction, any kind of scripted show. In fact, it's their actions, dialogue, habits, quirks, appearance, gestures, hopes, dreams, fears, triumphs, failures, and flaws that make a story what it is.
