Yoga is what you want to make of it. For some, it is a way to become healthy in body, mind, and spirit. For some, it is a way to challenge their own fitness level. For some, it is a stress reducer. For others, it is a quiet time we allow ourselves to relax, stretch, breathe, and renew ourselves for the tasks we face in the outside world. Most of all, yoga is a gift you give yourself.

The Studio
The Frankfort Yoga Studio is located on the third floor of the historic McClure Building, (306 West Main St., corner of St. Clair Mall) overlooking the heart of picturesque downtown Frankfort. This beautiful studio is very spacious and offers three rooms for classes.
The studio atmosphere
The Studio is peaceful, calming, rejuvenating, joyful, and graced by simplicity, creating one of the most beautiful yoga studios. This atmosphere is what makes taking classes at the Frankfort Yoga Studio so special and unique, verses taking classes at gyms.
The studio space
In 2011 the studio underwent a major renovation to create the best possible space for yoga practice and bring back the original grandeur of the building, built in 1907. The original maple wood and terrazzo floors were refinished, the drop ceilings were removed to expose the 15-foot ceiling, ceiling fans were added, and the 10-foot windows were unsealed so that fresh air can circulate and, on cooler days, the warm sunlight can help heat the studio. The natural light connects students with the natural world, and the soothing blue and earthy light brown colors create the extension of the sky into the studio. Only mirrors and a few necessities decorate the rooms. The studio has been described as "heavenly," creating a haven for all.
Instructors
Each of our instructors has his/her own teaching style, bringing to the studio a wide array of classes to meet the needs of all of our students. Most of our yoga instructors are Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs) through Yoga Alliance.
Diane Robinson, RYT
Classes: Diane believes that learning to breathe completely and allowing your movement to be led by your breath is key in all yoga. For all her classes she encourages students to share any yoga needs (favorite posture?) or goals they may have. **Additional classes and private sessions are available by request/appointment. Lunchtime All Levels Yoga: Diane usually teaches the 12:10 class on Thursday. This class is designed to relax and gently increase flexibility and strength through use of the breath and healthy alignment. We will complete our class with floor stretches and twists and of course complete relaxation- shavasana. The goal is for you to leave class relaxed, refreshed, renewed, (not sweaty) and ready to greet the rest of your day. Saturday All Levels Yoga: Diane generally teaches Saturday once or twice a month. Like the lunch time class this class is designed to relax and gently increase flexibility and strength through use of the breath and healthy alignment. Usually we will also have more wonderful heat building sun salutations... so if you wish to work up a little sweat we can do that. Or if you desire a more gentle practice you can chose to take more relaxation postures. Modifications will be given to meet student need and interest. We will complete our class with floor stretches and twists and of course complete relaxation- shavasana. Bio: Diane began enjoying yoga in a very casual way as a teen. When her son was born, yoga facilitated a wonderful natural childbirth. In July of 2010 Diane began the transition from teaching elementary special education for 28 years to teaching yoga part time and seeing what's next. She completed the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training with the Cincinnati Yoga School (a Registered Yoga School) at Frankfort Yoga Studio in 2009. In April 2011 Diane completed an 18 hour training with Christopher Baxter (Kripalu and Atmacore) in The Four Core Practices, a required component of Discovery Yoga's 500 hour teacher training program. In May 2011 Diane completed a Restorative yoga workshop with Leanne Carey. She has benefited from the teaching of many wonderful yoga teachers and often takes class with Kali Ray (Tri Yoga) when Kaliji is in Central Kentucky. Diane emphasizes listening to your body, developing complete breath and allowing movement to be led by the breath, is key to yoga. Diane loves studying/learning to deepen her own practice and sharing the healing joy of yoga in her teaching! Off the mat, Diane enjoys friends, NIA (Thanks Amy!), dancing, Tai Chi, gardening, hiking and travel.

Leslie Laird, RYT
Classes: When you come to Leslie's yoga class, unless a certain style was announced in advance, it's likely to be a varied mix tailored to students' needs. Don't expect every class to be alike. Sometimes props such as the wall, exercise balls, straps, blocks or scarves may be used. The class may meet indoors or out. It could include yoga flow, yin or yang-style yoga with poses held for a time to build stamina or release tension, yoga nidra (restorative yogic sleep), chanting, laughter, seated silent meditation or other types of practice. Bio: Leslie has experienced the joy of yoga since 1991. She studied her first three years with Bonnie Arndt of the Well Being. As a youth in McLean VA she'd practiced ballet and gymnastics, so she loved the familiar feel of seeking within for grace, balance, strength & flexibility. Leslie completed a wide-spectrum yoga teacher training with Will Brashear of Cincinnati Yoga School in 2008 and is RYT-200 certified with Yoga Alliance. In 2011 she trained an additional 200+ hours with Glenn Brown to teach Lionflow Yoga. See lionflow.com and FYS's Lionflow Yoga page to learn more about Glenn's school and the practice of Lionflow Yoga. Leslie earned her B.S. Ed. from George Mason University in 1989 and taught for several years in VA and KY public schools. Currently she does full-time administrative work with KY State Government. She loves to teach and learn more about a wide variety of yoga styles in her free time. Leslie relies on her daily yoga practice to keep her spine and joints moving smoothly despite having several arthritic discs. As with many instructors, her own physical challenges supply her with motivation and compassion. This year she's continuing to deepen her Lionflow Yoga practice with Glenn Brown of Lionflow Yoga & Arts. Leslie offers Thai Yoga Bodywork and Reiki in addition to group and private yoga instruction. She was one of the founders of The Healing Room at Frankfort Yoga Studio in 2009 (now called the Frankfort Reiki Center). Leslie resides in Franklin County with her husband Jeffrey and their three cats. When she's not doing yoga, another favorite pastime is creating pottery at Broadway Clay. When her cat Lucy died, she created these memorial tiles that are available for $18 each, half of which goes to Franklin County Humane Society.
Marilyn Morris, RYT
Classes (Gentle Yoga): Marilyn will slowly and mindfully take you from the chair to the mat, working on balance, strength, mindfulness, and humor. Bio: Marilyn received her 200-hour Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher with the Cincinnati Yoga School in 2009 and since then has been taking and teaching classes at the studio. She took Group Fitness Training at the YMCA to improve herself and her teaching. She has been teaching Chair Yoga at the Frankfort Senior Citizen Center since 2009. We are fortunate to have Marilyn. Benefits of Yoga
Studies have shown that the practice of yogaincluding breath work, movement (asana), relaxation, and meditationoffers numerous physiological and psychological health benefits for all age groups. When it comes to older yoga students, the beneficial effects can be particularly helpful in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, hypertension and osteoporosis. These effects include: Yoga facilitates the release of endorphins, which promote a sense of well-being and can alleviate pain. Yoga can help end the stress-pain cycle (in which chronic muscle tension creates stress, stress creates pain, pain causes more muscle tension, etc.) that many arthritis sufferers experience.
Decreased Blood Pressure
Increased Respiratory Efficiency
Improved Muscular Flexibility And Range Of Motion (rom)
Improved Posture
Increased Strength And Resiliency
Improved Immune Function
Decreased Pain
Improved Balance

For Interested & New Students
Dear Interested Yoga Students
Instructor: Julia.
Welcome to yoga! It's wonderful that you have an open mind to learn about something new.
Yoga may be new to you, but it actually is a very ancient science, thousands of years old.
The beauty of yoga is that it can be applied to our hectic modern-day living. Having been a student and teacher of yoga for over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to see how yoga truly benefits its students in his or her own personal way.
Often the first obstacle to practicing yoga is to not truly believe that you deserve the time to practice.
As I tell my students, your body does so much for you that it deserves some special time to rejuvenate so that it can better serve you and you can better serve others. Don't wait until your body is in pain, though that is when people often begin yoga.
Some people may not have tried yoga because of their misunderstanding that they must be extremely flexible.
The primary purpose of yoga is to promote mental well being by connecting the mind and body together. Success in yoga is measured not by one's flexibility, but by one's willingness to make the union of mind, body, and spirit.
Through the years of teaching yoga I have found that the primary need of my students is to relax and release stress and tension.
The medical world is now saying that 98% of our illnesses are stress related. For these reasons I have developed yoga style called "Restful Yoga." In Restful Yoga I encourage the students not to feel any competition, not among the class members and not even within one's selfit's all about doing what is right for you at the moment. I talk the students through easy-to-learn stretches, asanas, deep breathing, and relaxing exercises, while emphasizing that they work at their own pace and level. The student then leaves feeling stretched out, restful, and rejuvenated.
I encourage you to take a session or at least one class to see if yoga may be something that will benefit you.
Try yogayou may do it the rest of your life!
Information Sheet for New Students
Congratulations for taking time in your busy life to come to yoga class.
You should feel very good about your decision to learn about yoga. Yoga is so rich in what it has to offer. It's about the mind, body, and spirit. In this class we will focus on relaxing, breathing, and stretching. This will release stress and tension allowing your mind, body, and emotions to become better so you can better meet your daily challenges. Go slowly and concentrate on the way you feel.
I have been practicing yoga since 1975, when I took a yoga class at the YWCA.
Since then I have taken other classes and taught yoga in Asheville, NC, Palau (Micronesia), and Frankfort. I have compiled the following information to better prepare you for yoga, and I also highly recommend either borrowing or buying a book on yoga. There are also lots of videos available.
Relax and enjoy! Yoga may be something you will practice the rest of your life.
Preparation Before Class
Bring a mat or towel (if you want)
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
Remove any jewelry that may get in your way.
It is best not to eat at least one hour before doing yoga; two hours is better.
If you have any health concerns please let me know.
t is best to have a physician's permission to take yoga if you have any major concern.
During Class
Use this time wisely and well.
Let go of all thoughts and worries.
Simply begin to watch. Shift from a thinking mode to a feeling-sensing mode.
Everyone is different, so let your body guide you in deciding whether you should stretch more or less, hold the posture longer or shorter, and so on.
Never risk injury by forcing your body into a position or by straining to go further than you are presently able.
It is only when your muscles are relaxed that they will stretch and allow you to advance in a posture.
Be patient and take your time, but challenge yourself and simply persist.
When you truly listen to yourself, you are your own best teacher.
Immerse yourself fully in what you are doing as you are doing it.
The three stages of an asana are:
(1) coming into the pose, (2) holding it, and (3) coming out of it.
Once you are able to relax in a pose,
you can adjust your position to achieve a greater stretch.
Yoga breathing is an exercise that also takes practice.
As you inhale and exhale, don't overdo it, but be persistent.
Whenever you need help or have a question,
please ask me either during class or after class, or call me.
If you miss a class,
you can make it up by attending any of the other classes that are offered during the session as long as the class is not full (please call in advance).
Class Schedule
If you are making up a class call before class.
After Class
You may want to keep a journal.
I have recorded a tape of my yoga class so that students can practice at home.
CD is $8 and tape is $6
Practice yoga as often as you can.
The more you practice, the more change you will experience.
Remind yourself daily to relax, breathe deeply, keep good posture, think positive thoughts, take time to be still and quiet, eat healthy foods, be happy, and smile.
When you practice yoga, you don't just exercise your muscles.
It also aids in healing your body by making you balanced, strong, flexible, sensitive, energized, and relaxed. Yoga also trains your mind to concentrate. This combination of body and mind culminates in the experience of stillness and peace.
Join me for our annual spring, summer, and fall retreats at Leeland Valley.
Yoga gift certificates are available.
Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga is a class for everyone but it is especially geared for those who have knee problems and difficulty getting up and down from the floor. This class will teach you how to do yoga not only in a chair, but also in a car, a plane, at your desk, at your computer, standing in a line, in bed, at a rest stop, and most anywhere. You will learn about places and ways you can practice yoga wherever you are, to enable you to practice yoga, no matter what condition your body is in.
Children's Creative Yoga
With Julia Rome
Children's Creative Yoga class includes yoga, yoga ball, nature movement, and dance. The students will have fun while getting fit. Yoga and fun movement are ideal activities for children to learn how to keep their body fit for life. Parents are welcome to take the class with their child.
Why Yoga for Children
Yoga is an ideal way for children to learn how to keep their body fit for life.
It is best to learn yoga when young!
Yoga is stretching, as a child's body naturally wants to do.
Children come into the world as natural yogis. Their joints are pliable and their muscles are flexible. Yoga gives children the opportunity to explore their natural flexibility and encourages them to stay flexible.
Our society is becoming more and more sedentary, making it difficult for some children to get the exercise they need.
Yoga is a great way for children to become stronger and healthier through natural and functional physical movement using their own body weight.
Today, with the fast pace of life, family schedules, lots of activities, and the pressures of competition, children are under a lot of stress.
Yoga counteracts that stress and gives children tools to cope.
All children can do yoga because they work at their own level.
Yoga can be done without any equipment.
In yoga, there is no competition. Everyone can be successful!
Children love to do yoga because they can do it so easily and it's so much fun.
Some of the benefits of yoga for children
Improve their strength, flexibility, coordination, and posture
Learn to relax and concentrate (great for testing and stressful times)
Learn how to be quiet and still using a breathing technique
Have better self esteem and self respect
Have a better understanding of how the body works and a better understanding of how to care for one's body
Express their creativity and use their imagination

Lionflow Progressive Yoga
with Leslie Laird.
Leslie is one of just three certified Lionflow Progressive Yoga teachers in the world today.
This energizing practice created by Indiana's Yoga Asana Champion Glenn Brown will teach you a lot of new stretches.
Lionflow is a challenging, strength-building, yet gentle healing practice for all levels;
great for those who enjoy developing their inner and outer strength, flexibility and balance in a playful, small-group setting.
The flow contains five steps to safely warm up, strengthen and stretch:
Focus, Strengthen, Compress, Stretch and Relax.
The class is structured to lead students to develop a safe daily home practice or warm-up for any physical activity.
In addition to deepening your yoga practice, benefits include improved body composition, stress release, cleansing, and improvements in focus, flexibility, strength, balance and alignment.
Bring a mat, water, a humble attitude (that is - kindness to yourself) and eagerness to try your best.
The difficulty level of the class is adjusted for the students who attend, so all can progress little by little.

Restorative & Prenatal Yoga
with Diane Robinson.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is a gentle practice which promotes deep relaxation and healing. Most poses (asanas) are done seated or reclining. The body is supported using props such as blankets, bolsters, or cushions. This allows total relaxation, release of tension, opening up of the body, and creates space for deeper breath.
Why a combined Restorative and Parental class?
Restorative and prenatal use many of the same postures- asanas. The restorative prenatal poses are considered among the most beneficial for the expectant mother. Please see Prenatal description below.
Parental Yoga
Prenatal yoga can help alleviate many of the common discomforts of pregnancy such as nausea, backache, and swelling. Relaxation breathing techniques promote calm, focus, and a healthy body-mind-spirit connection. Many of these poses relax, open, and strengthen the pelvic area. Modifications will be available for each stage of pregnancy. No prior yoga experience required.
Classes with Todd Graddy
Lisa Todd Graddy, ViniYoga Therapist
A graduate of the American Viniyoga Institute, Todd is a certified yoga therapist and practicing psychotherapist. She is one of only two people in Kentucky who has met the yoga therapy qualifications for the national standards as a yoga therapist, so she can offer a Yoga Therapy class at the Studio. She is also holds an E-RYT 200 yoga certification and is applying for an E-RYT 500 certification.
Yoga Ball
Yoga Ball
This yoga class is done with a burst-resistant ball that is the correct size for the student. In YogaBall the students use their breath, and awareness, while stretching (practicing yoga asanas) using the ball. The ball gives the student an opportunity to move in ways and to places that one cannot do without the ball, while improving one's balance.
Yogalates
With Linda Martin
Linda teaches a small personalized Yogalates class which includes warming up slowly while putting the emphasis on relaxing. Then the class transitions into working of the core muscles to tone and develop strength. Finally wall yoga is used to relax and meditate. This one-hour class is a great mid-week boost.
Yoga Meets Dance
Yoga Meets Dance
If you haven't experienced Yoga Meets Dance, we would highly recommend it. YMD is fun and simple. The class combines yoga, free and guided dance, community building and mediation to soul-stirring music, and invites all ages, shapes and sizes. No experience is needed and groups are welcome. It's great fun, exercise, stress release. A Yoga Meets Dance Celebration can make your party or other group event very special.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is a 40 to 60 minute guided progressive relaxation.
Students recline on mats with option to use eye pillows and blankets.
The instructor verbally guides them to relax each body part and recede from their external senses, and then takes them on a yogic sleep journey with guided imagery that may include nature scenes, colors, stories and/or a variety of other representations of the strengths associated with each of their chakras. Special music may be used to deepen the experience.
A 10 to 15 minute silent time takes place towards the end of class for students to pursue their own visions, before the instructor softly talks them back to wakeful awareness.
This class does not include any movement or touching, although students may choose to stretch themselves a bit before and after class for greater comfort.
This practice can be deeply healing and refreshing.
It is said that one hour of yoga nidra can be at least as restorative as five hours of normal sleep.

Pilates
Instructor: Jill Marple.
Pilates is a system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.
The Pilates philosophy focuses on training the mind and body to work together toward the goal of overall fitness. It was designed to work the deepest muscles in the body, creating a strong core without the pain associated with conventional exercises. The muscles are stretched while being strengthened so there is no tearing of muscles. There is no impact on the joints and the number of repetitions is low so the muscles are not pushed to exhaustion. Pilates Presentations available!
Benefits of Pilates
Some of the benefits of Pilates include:
Improved posture and alignment
Reduced stress and fatigue
Muscle balance
Improved body awareness
Improved strength and flexibility of the back reducing or preventing back pain
Overall improved strength, endurance, flexibility and joint mobility
Tai Chi
with Joe Schmidt.
The short Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) 16 posture form is taught by Joe Schmidt.
The Tai Chi classes at FYS are open ended- you can start any day. Beginners are welcome and encouraged. We expect that most attending the classes are new to Tai Chi, so we give detailed movement instruction and some Tai Chi theory.
The short 16 TCC form is good, complete Tai Chi practice designed to be learned by beginners well enough to practice in a 16 week college semester (since we are older it takes longer, but no worry).
To "play" it through is about 2+ minutes per set, upon familiarity, so repeated frequent practice is easy. Students will develop a personal stress relieving routine of 1/2 hour or more as desired by adding warm up Tai Chi and Qigong exercises. These classes include introductory Qigong that is easy. Students receive explanatory supplements and references.
Schmidt is drawn to Tai Chi Chuan & other TC practices, because of TCC's dance-like quality and it feels good while giving good wellness effects.
"Tai Chi is a martial art as I was taught it, but this is a not self- defense class. Many students have said to me: "knowing what the TCC move is about helps practice it." Tai Chi is also moving meditation and a wellness practice from Chinese culture and classes focus on that. Class goals are having fun, while moving properly to gain the health benefits that practitioners and Chinese medicine describe."
