COMING SOON! The team behind Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers is opening its newest addition to our farmer-owned collection of restaurants.
Farmers & Distillers embodies the true enterprising spirit of the original founding father, George Washington. Most know GW as America’s first President, but he was also a farmer and a distiller. Our first president was an entrepreneur ahead of his time. He experimented with progressive farming techniques at his Mt. Vernon Estate and established what became the largest distillery in America at the turn of the 18th century.
George Washington’s American industriousness and keen eye for opportunity are built into the very foundation of this country and into every aspect of Farmers & Distillers. We kept asking ourselves, “What would George do?” be it with flavor, cooking technique, or atmosphere. Farmers & Distillers is a celebration of George Washington, as President, Farmer, and Foodie. Our menu showcases cuisines we believe GW would appreciate and endorse.
As with all of our farmer-owned restaurants, Farmers & Distillers believes that everyone should be able to enjoy high-quality food that is delicious, and grown with care. American farms are the bedrock of our country, and we want our food to represent this heritage. We pay close attention to our food sources, their quality, and work hard to keep our food simple, made from scratch, wholesome, and delicious. Our team continues its relentless pursuit to make each decision Through the Eyes of the Founding Farmer™.
Farmers & Distillers is proud to be located in our nation’s capital, and we look to its history for inspiration. Located in the heart of Mt. Vernon Square, we are part of a rich and diverse community. In considering our founding farmer and father, whose collaborative nature brought together an entire country, we know GW would draw inspiration from his community. We studied the history of Mt. Vernon Square and drew parallels to how GW approached the evolution of his Mt. Vernon and his culinary and beverage passions. At Farmers & Distillers you’ll find crispy pork schnitzel recalling the original German immigrants working on DC’s east side; the menu also finds inspiration in Chinatown, with our hand-pulled noodles and farmers-style dumplings and spring rolls. GW loved European cooking techniques, which we’re utilizing in dishes like the Pot au Feu (slow cooked short rib.) This menu will have something for everyone, in the neighborhood and beyond.
At the heart of the restaurant is our fully functioning distillery: Founding Spirits. Beverage Director, Jon Arroyo spearheads this exciting venture with long-time mentor, Rick Wasmund of Copper Fox Distillery, who produces our Founding Farmers Rye and Gin. As “distillers” we are excited to be making our own spirits, in house, using age-old techniques and modern-day culinary expertise. We are continuing to raise the bar on what makes a delicious drink and also giving guests an opportunity to peek into the distillery process, seeing what exactly goes into making spirits—more high-quality ingredients from American farms.
Farmers & Distillers is scheduled to open later this fall in Washington DC. We are excited about this next addition to our farmer-owned restaurants. Working for the Farmer’s Restaurant Group offers a unique atmosphere for the restaurant industry, and we hope you will consider joining our team.
