Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage involves pressure that gets deep into the muscular and surrounding tissues to help soften, lengthen and release habitual holding patterns of one's body. This pressure can be light to heavy, depending on the degree of stress and tension held within the effected tissues, while keeping the client comfortable at all times. That said, the "no pain, no gain" approach doesn't exist at Elements of Bodywork. Those who have tried Swedish massage may not have gotten the relief from their overall muscle tension as they had hoped. For instance, someone who is physically fit, and has strong, healthy muscle tissue, will usually seek the deeper relief a deep tissue massage can create for their body, and also be able to fully relax and enjoy the session. Typically, the strokes involved are similar to that of a Swedish massage, and can include the use of the therapist's forearms for deeper, longer glides. Joint mobilizations and stretching can be integrated into a session to help improve the lasting benefits of the massage. Also, with the therapist utilizing combined techniques of Trigger Point therapy, Myofascial Release, and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, deep tissue massage can be a very effective tool in aiding the recovery of many common issues, such as Plantar Fasciitis, Sciatica, Piriformis Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow, Shin Splints, Tension Headaches, Migraines, Frozen Shoulder, and many more.
What are the benefits?
The primary benefits of deep tissue massage include: improved posture, more flexibility, better joint range of motion, increased fluid movement, decreased pain and discomfort. Deep tissue massage is great for anyone who has muscular tension that limits their movement(s) and/or ability to be comfortable throughout their daily activities. Athletes commonly seek this treatment, but it can benefit anyone.
Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
It shouldn't hurt, but it's likely to be a bit more uncomfortable than a classic Swedish massage. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you. It's important to drink plenty of water before and after a deep tissue massage to help flush cellular waste and toxins out of the body tissues. It's possible that you might feel some soreness the day after a deep tissue massage even if you DO drink water. This just means a lot of waste products were flushed out of the tissues. It should pass within a day or so.
How Fast Will I Get Results With A Deep Tissue Massage?
It's important to be realistic about what one deep tissue massage can achieve. Many people ask for more pressure, thinking that if the therapist just pushes hard enough, they can get rid of all their knots in an hour. This just won't happen. In fact, undoing chronic knots and tension built up over a lifetime is best achieved with an integrated program that includes exercise, work on your posture and ways of moving, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a thorough program of recovery from acute and chronic pain syndromes which utilizes specific massage therapy, flexibility stretching, and home care to eliminate the causes of most neuromuscular pain patterns. This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief will help to bring about balance between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. By definition, Neuromuscular Therapy is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points known as trigger points (TrPs) to relieve pain. This comprehensive system of soft tissue manipulation creates a balance of the central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses to the body very slowly. In physiology, Arndt's Law illustrates how pain originates in the body. It states that the body's activity is affected by different levels of stimuli to nerve centers. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. It is therefore necessary to stabilize neurological activity to healthy levels which will maintain normal function and promote overall health. Neuromuscular Therapy will be used to address five elements that cause pain: A primary focus of NMT is to understand the formation, etiology and treatment of myofascial trigger points (TrPs). In NMT a special effort is made to locate the source of referred pain including any perpetuating influences and eliminating them while paying attention to correct negative postural and biomechanical patterns.
Ischemia
Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch.
Trigger Points
TP's highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain or sensation into other areas. These occur when nerves fire impulses at a rapid speed into an area of the body other than that which has been traumatized. Because of this the cause of severe pain may be quite removed from the actual site of pain.
Nerve Compression or Entrapment
Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone. Realigning vertebrae without treating associated soft tissues frequently treats the symptom and not the cause. Treating the surrounding soft tissues that cause or maintain the dislocation is imperative.
Postural Distortion
Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off its axis. The body will compensate in an effort to retain balance. Trauma, gravitational pressure or psychological patterning causes the soft tissue to become thicker, denser and harder. Muscle contraction, body distortion, and pain are the result. By determining why the compensation has occurred, the distorted patterns can be eliminated, proper posture restored, and associated pain diminished or eliminated in most cases.
Biomechanical Dysfunction
Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke, computer keyboarding). Repetitive strain of certain soft tissues results in adapted movement patterns that become muscular "habits" and must be reeducated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I receive a massage?
The benefits associated with massage therapy tend to be substantially boosted when you receive treatment regularly. The recommended frequency of therapeutic sessions differs case by case, however, one to two treatment(s) a week are usually suggested in order to overcome a physical or health-related issue. Once a month sessions may be adequate for wellness or routine maintenance. Following your treatment plan created by your massage therapist will result in the best possible outcome.
What are your massage rooms like?
We enjoy our workspace, and definitely want you to, as well. Both of our massage rooms are comfortable, clean, and relaxing. We make a strong effort to create a calming ambiance for our clients by using freshly washed and premium linens, calming music, and soft lighting.
Do you use oil or lotion?
Depending on the type of massage you booked, we will either use oil (maximum glide), cream (little glide for deeper tissue penetration), or work without any massage media (maximum tissue penetration.) Swedish and Prenatal massages will usually use either oil or cream. Hot Stone massage will use oil. Neuromuscular Therapy and Deep Tissue massage will utilize either cream or no massage media. Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy will use cream. Any of the above may be changed depending on the goals set with each client for each session.
How long is my massgae
The length of your massage session will be either 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, depending on the session you have booked. We also allow 30 minutes between sessions, to allow time for you to undress to your comfort level and get on the massage table, dress at the end of massage without feeling rushed, and allow us a chance to show you stretches that can help you maintain your new level of stress reduction, improved muscular health and improved range of motion.
What should I wear for y massage?
For all massage sessions, we may request our clients to undress to their comfort level. This can be completely undressing, or leaving on some or all underclothing. It really comes down to the clients' comfort, as draping with a sheet is always utilized to keep you and your therapist comfortable. Whatever you decide, your massage therapist will behave in a professional and respectful manner, and will provide you with a comforting experience. Some clothing may obstruct the natural flow of a massage stroke, and preclude the usage of certain therapeutic techniques. For your first session, wearing workout clothing will help your therapist complete a more thorough body assessment. For Prenatal massage and some bodywork sessions, underwear or running shorts may be worn to aid the therapist in draping the hips and legs. A sports bra may be worn if the session's focus is on the lateral or anterior chest region. Know that you are in control of your session. At any time during the massage you feel uncomfortable, please notify the therapist right away.
