El Rancho Restaurant is a tradition in Colorado Mountain dining. Built in 1948 and just 18 miles west of Denver, it is a favorite place for locals and visitors from all over the United States and the world to enjoy great food while taking in spectacular views of the Continental Divide.
Many Colorado visitors guides describe EL Rancho as having …one of the most photographed views in Colorado. And, some even say …in America! El Rancho is 7,686 feet above sea level. We are just one of three restaurants to have been a postal station – and this is one reason the surrounding area is called “El Rancho”.
Trader Jack’s in Denver originally designed our dining room tables and chairs. The chairs were ‘intended’ to be sat on backwards using the back rest as armrests in order to better view cock-fighting events. Our five massive moss rock fireplaces were built by local stone artisans. President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited El Rancho during his presidential term and was responsible for originally designating the 2 exits near us as the “El Rancho” exits off then newly built I-70.
In 1954, we could serve only 72 guests. Over the years, we have increased the seating to well over 200 on the main level. Our Colorado deck, built in 1997, provides a delightful outside dining experience. A restaurant columnist applauded that the deck expansion was done …without destroying the mountain elegance, and the feeling of rambling, high country hominess.
