Info
Size and shape of the vehicle, the vehicle's load capacity, and the size and weight of the power chair, scooter or wheelchair may also play a role in what lift compatibility. There are a variety of vehicle lifts available for transporting power chairs, wheelchairs, and scooters. The type of vehicle lift a customer can use is dependent on several factors:
The year, make, and model of the vehicle.
The type of power chair, wheel chair, or scooter.
The nature of the individual's disability.
Power Chair & Scooter Lifts for Vehicles
Size and shape of the vehicle, the vehicle's load capacity, and the size and weight of the mobility device all must be considered when choosing the right lift for your needs.
Outside (or hitch) lifts
Inside (or hoist) lifts
Inside platform (or hybrid) lifts
For those with manual wheelchairs, we market and service a variety of wheelchair carriers as well.
Outside Lifts
Outside lifts (or hitch lifts) are installed on the receiver hitch mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
An accessory that allows the lift to swing away from the rear hatch or tailgate is also available. Hitch lifts can be installed on most vehicles however there are exceptions due to weight limitations.
An outside lift allows for preservation of cargo space, as the lift is at the rear of the vehicle.
Also, outside lifts may be installed on many smaller vehicles for which there are no inside lift applications.
Inside / Hoist Lift
Inside lifts are ideal for minivans, pickup trucks and SUVs.
They operate in a similar fashion to a small crane. Mounted inside the vehicle, inside lifts allow the power chair or scooter to be hoisted into the rear of an SUV or van or into the bed of a pickup truck. Their low-profile design allows for maximum cargo space to be retained when the mobility device is not carried in the vehicle.
Inside lifts can handle power chairs as heavy as 400 lbs.
Not all vehicles can accomodate an inside lift because power chair and scooter sizes can vary greatly.
Inside Platform / Hybrid Lifts
Inside Platform Lifts (or Hybrid Lifts) Allow the User to Transport His Power Chair or Scooter Inside His Vehicle on an Easy-To-Load Platform Lift.
Most minivans and larger SUVs can accomodate inside platform lifts. They are easier to use than the hoist-style inside lift, as the chair or scooter doesn't need to be guided by hand.
Inside Platform Lifts are Ideal for Pateints or Caretakers Who Want the Protection and Safety of an Inside Lift, But Have a Difficult Time Standing and Balancing.
Wheelchair Carriers
Wheelchair Carriers
The wheelchair carrier fits in a hitch installed on the vehicle. Wheelchair carriers are designed for manual, collapsible wheelchairs and not for power chairs or scooters. Most vehicles can accommodate the weight of the wheelchair carrier and the wheelchair.
Driving Assist Devices
Driving control modifications enable a person with a disability to drive a vehicle. Primary modifications allow the driver to operate the accelerator and brake with their hands or with their left foot. Secondary vehicle controls (lights, turn indicators, dashboard instruments, cruise control, etc.) can also be modified for use by a disabled driver. Driving control modifications include:
Brake and accelerator modifications.
Emergency brake modifications.
Steering assist devices.
Secondary vehicle control devices.
Brake and Accelerator Modification
Disability in your legs or feet may make it difficult or even impossible for you to operate the brake and accelerator pedals.
That doesn't mean that your driving days are over. There are driving assist devices that allow a person with disability to operate the brake and accelerator and continue driving.
If you have had an amputation, neurological damage, muscle weakness, or skeletal/joint issues, hand controls or a left foot accelerator could be the solution fo you.
Mobility Equipment Options
Below are brief descriptions of several mobility equipment options:
Hand Controls
Hand controls enable a driver who has difficulty using his legs and/or feet to drive. The driver can operate the brake and accelerator pedals with either his left or right hand. There are several hand control options available. Most are mechanical and operate via either a push/pull, push/right-angle, push/rock, or push/twist action. We will fit for the best hand controls for your vehicle and ability.
Left foot Accelerator Pedals
The left foot accelerator enables a driver who can only use his left foot to operate the accelerator and brake by adding a gas pedal to the left side of the brake pedal. The device includes an accelerator guard that prevents accidental depressing of the OEM gas pedal by a prosthetic right leg. The left foot accelerator is easily installed and removed to allow both right and left foot drivers to operate the vehicle.
Emergency Brake Modifications
Electric Emergency Park Brake
Some people may have difficulty operating the emergency park brake with their foot or with their hand. The electric emergency park brake modification allows the driver to operate the emergency park brake with the push of a button.
Emergency Park Brake Extension
This is a cost effective modification for someone who has a vehicle with a foot-operated emergency brake. If he has disability in his left foot but still has use of his left hand, this equipment allows him to operate the park brake pedal with his hand only. An emergency park brake extension qualifies for mobility rebates through the manufacturer and the sales tax exemption.
Steering Assist Devices
Steering Knob
A steering knob gives the driver extra leverage and control to aid in turning the steering wheel. Steering knobs are commonly paired with hand controls. Note that this particular modification does not qualify for a Texas sales tax exemption or refund.
Palm Grip
A palm grip is similar to a steering knob but the grip wraps around the hand, allowing for a firmer grasp on the wheel.
Other Devices
Steering assist devices are available for upper arm amputees and people with a limited range of motion in their hand and/or wrist such as a tri-pin, post pin, or amputee ring.
Secondary Vehicle Controls
Secondary Vehicle Controls
Sometimes a disability limits an individual's ability to operate secondary systems such as turn signals, headlights, air conditioning, the horn, etc. A wide range of secondary control systems is available. Contact us for a free evaluation and product ideas.
Wheelchair Securement Systems
Wheelchair securement systems allow the wheelchair user to drive or ride in a vehicle as safely as anyone else. Securement systems lock the wheelchair in place either with tie-down straps or a mechanical docking device. Securement systems are primarily used in wheelchair accessible vans to safely secure the user in his power chair or wheelchair while the vehicle is in motion. A Certified Mobility Consultant is your best resource to help you choose the ideal securement system for your lifestyle and ability.
Manual Securement Systems
A manual securement system mounts to a track or base and attaches at four points on the main frame of the wheelchair or power chair. This is the least expensive type of securement system. However, kneeling, bending, and hand strength are required in order to adjust the straps to secure the chair in place.
Retractable Securement Systems
Similar to the manual securement system, a retractable securement system mounts in a track or base and attaches to four points on the main frame of the wheelchair or power chair. The straps are spring-loaded and self-retract in a similar fashion to a seat belt. These retractors still require kneeling and/or bending but do not require manual adjustment of the straps.
Electronic Docking Devices
Electronic docking devices are the next step for independent wheelchair securement. Docking devices are the perfect solution for those looking to drive their own vehicle or quickly secure their own wheelchair using a single point system. The user rolls his wheel chair into position. A vertical peg mounted to the bottom of the chair slides into place and mates with the mechanical docking device mounted in the appropriate spot on the vehicle floor. Mechanical jaws close and secure the wheelchair in place. Docking devices are primarily installed in wheelchair accessible vans. No kneeling, bending, or other physical exertion is required to operate the docking device. This system is very easy to operate as the user can roll his wheelchair into position and lock in it place without any assistance.
Safety Belt Accessories
Safety belt accessories are available for drivers or passengers who require extended seat belt length. Safety restraint systems can also be fastened to the existing OEM tracks or floor mounts.

Ramps

Vertical Lifts
