Jiu means "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding."
Jitsu means "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. It's based on clinching and grappling techniques that utilize leverage, proper technique and timing as its principles. Gracie or Brazilian jiu-jitsu was created and developed by Carlos and Helio Gracie in the early 20's in Brazil.
For 80 years, the Gracie family proved through no-holds barred matches against heavier and bigger opponents that
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most efficient form of Self-Defense there is. BJJ, as it's also known, it's now practiced by every professional mixed martial artist in activity and is the primary form of Self-Defense taught to the military of many countries around the world.
BJJ training can be used for street self-defense (anti-bullying, rape prevention, law enforcement) and sport grappling tournaments.
The philosophy behind Jiu-Jitsu's success lays in the following strategy: Close the distance and clinch; Take the attacker/opponent to the ground; Establish a safe and dominant position; Finish the fight with the application of chokes or joint locks.
Classes are taught in group settings that may range from 14 to 30 students per class, depending on the program.
With consistency, 100% of the students achieve excellent fitness goals in just a few months. And this is just one of the side-effects you'll get from continuous training.
This is a co-ed program for anyone 15 and over, with or without previous athletics experience.
In fact, we specialize and have a program just for beginners.
In addition to receiving Martial Arts training directly from a member of the Gracie Family all year long
our Academy is constantly hosting events with other Gracie family members such as Rodrigo, Royler and UFC pioneer, Royce Gracie. Click on names to view photo albums.
Jiu-Jitsu for Law Enforcement
Jiu-Jitsu for Law Enforcement
Police brutality and law suits are one of the main concerns of Police Chiefs nationwide. Since our system doesn't rely on strikes and kicks, Law Enforcement Officers will be less likely to injure the suspect during the arrest procedure as well as themselves. Arrests will be done without the need of assistance from two or more colleagues. Confrontations will end much faster with fewer injuries to both parties.
Jiu-Jitsu for Competition
We understand the difference between training for a competition and the Self-Defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.
While competition is not mandatory, nor expected of students, many students enjoy competing as means of testing themselves and their abilities.
With a competitive background ourselves, we encourage and support any student who wishes to step up and compete.
Tournaments are held all over California and our students always do well. We believe in hard preparation towards a competition and while entering tournaments isn't required, we wil demand complete dedication and focus during training camp for any event.
Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts/Streets
Jiu-Jitsu has been adopted by every successful MMA fighter now days.
It has been proven to be alone, the most efficient form of Self-Defense there is. Without any knowledge in Jiu-Jitsu, achieving the top of the ranks in any MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) organization would be just impossible. Our main focus, however, isn't MMA competitions. Instead, we prefer to focus specifically on Jiu-Jitsu for street Self-Defense.
As a group setting, we hold seasonal MMA camps in the Summer that consists of a 21-Lesson Program (7 weeks) for the adults, and a 30-hour Program (5 weeks) for the kids.
The same 21-Lesson Street Self-Defense Program is available as Individual Lessons as well.
In program, you'll learn how to use Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to close the distance and clinch on an opponent who's trying to hit you, take him to the ground, work your way up to a dominant position and finish the fight by the use of chokes or joint locks.
Class Format
Classes run from 60 to 90 minutes depending of the content and class size. Warm ups are designed to improve students overall fitness levels and includes functional exercises for coordination development and core strengthening. The technical part of the class is done by several rounds of repetitions according to the topic of the month. We believe that intense drilling is essential to develop your drills to their fullest. Live training sessions will conclude the class. This is where all eligible students put to practice all the retained material against a training partner, who is fully resisting and counteracting with their own moves. This is undoubtedly the most exciting and fun aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. You'll learn how to remain calm and perform under pressure while figuring out the best route to take to win the match. This problem-solving skill that you will take with you outside the mat and into your personal and professional life, you can only learn with live training sessions.
12-Week Intro Program (Beginners only)
The Intro Program consists of a cyclic 12-week course. That means you can start your training at any time, regardless of which week is in progress. With exception of the first two classes, all techniques included here can be learned in any order. The 12-Week Intro Program is designed to gradually improve your skill, coordination, reflexes, focus and overall stamina. You will learn how to fall and be comfortable on your back, and the basic applications of takedowns, attacks and escapes standing and on the ground. This initial stage of your training will prepare you to begin drilling at a full resistance pace (optional) in the following program. Upon completion of the 12-Week Intro Program, you will earn your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stripe and eligibility to enter the Blue Belt Program.
Blue Belt Program (Intermediate)
Upon completion of the 12-Week Intro Program, you will begin to experience more resistance training in your routine (this type of training is done in a very controlled environment, where safety always comes first). This is as real as it gets! You will drastically improve your conditioning, strength and skill. You will drill and work with more experienced students, helping you progress quickly and confidently. Once in this program, you have the opportunity to upgrade your plan to unlimited training, allowing you to reach the next belt rank faster. Besides making huge progress towards mastery of the art, this stage of your training will give you the experience necessary to enter the Black Belt Program.
Black Belt Program (Advanced)
In this program, you will experience more live training and be exposed to more advanced moves. In this phase, you will witness incredible improvement not only on your technique, but your conditioning as well. Many blue belts and higher ranks at our school choose to enter competitions although, it is completely optional. Our Academy has formed many regional, national and international champions and encourages anyone who intends to compete.
Class Curriculum
Class Curriculum
The Black Belt Program is designed so intermediate and advanced students may benefit from the same class. The curriculum is also cyclic. It is divided into monthly and subdivided into weekly topics and cover from street self defense techniques such as defense against weapons and various holds, to takedowns, attacks and escapes from your back and more.
Ranking
A student's rank is based upon his/her knowledge, physical skill, length of time training, attitude, and overall quality of movement and understanding.
While earning any particular rank is an achievement, it is a mistake to place too much focus on this as an end. Focus on your training; develop as much skill as possible; have a good and exemplary attitude; everything else will follow naturally.
Individual Lessons are available for those students who wish to advance more rapidly or study a particular area in greater detail.
We recommend private lessons for all students since it allows one-on-one time with an Instructor.
All belts have 4 stripes.
Upon earning 4 stripes and completing all classes at that stripe, the student is ready to receive a higher belt rank at the following Belt Ceremony. There are many variables that contribute to how much time a student spends in each rank. The criteria is: attendance, discipline and willingness to learn/overall behavior. Assuming the student trains at the recommended rate of minimum of two classes per week, stripes will be earned every four months (40 classes).
When first learning a technique we will focus on proper mechanics.
The second stage will be working on smoothness of motion and the third stage will be to add speed and power to the technique. As you progress to advanced level there will be more focus on detail, sharpness, and deeper understanding of how the techniques are applied. As you advance, the expectations become higher!
The Official Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rank
White, Gray, Yellow, Orange and Green for Kids; Blue, Purple, Brown and Black Belt for adults.
Black Belt
Black Belt
Earning a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belt is a life achievement. Many will try and most will fail. Only the committed and the strong will be rewarded with such gift. Generally, it takes longer to reach Black belt status than it would to receive a Master's Degree. It is the belief of the creators of the art, Carlos and Helio Gracie that Black Belts must only be presented to adults over 18 years of age. The Belts represents a character status, meaning one will be promoted not only as they learn, develop and refine their martial arts skills, but has gone thorough an extensive period of self enduring tests which resulted in someone with an exemplary code of conduct and morals.
Promotions
The criteria below is only a guideline. There are many circumstances (e.g., age, prior experience, attitude, natural ability, etc.), which account for students progressing at different rates. Students must remember that earning rank is a privilege, not a right. We offer instruction in Martial Arts, however, rank progression is always earned and it is not guaranteed. Belt ceremonies are held twice a year, in the Summer and Winter, before the New Year. All promotion of the students falls under the guidelines set by Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Consideration for promotion is given when a student:
Demonstrates proficiency of required material
Displays proper attitude and behavior
Maintains acceptable academics (Kids)
Attends class consistently
Is always on time and always have his/her membership card to check in for classes.
Trial Class
Trial Class
If you wish to set up a trial class, we'd love to teach you!
For The Kids
In Jiu-Jitsu we train hard everyday to make our bodies strong.
Because we are strong, we can choose between fighting and not fighting In the animal world, a tiger protecting her cubs will fight ferociously because she is scared People are similar. When we are scared, we will fight. But we must avoid fighting.
Because we have become strong enough through our Jiu-Jitsu training, we have confidence in ourselves and know that we can walk away from a fight.
This is the most important lesson in Jiu-Jitsu We must always do our best to walk away from a fight.
It is good to practice Jiu-Jitsu and train hard At the same time though, you must also study hard at school and listen to your teachers.
Being strong only in Jiu-Jitsu is not good enough You must make your mind strong as well as your body. At home, do your best to help your parents Listen to what they tell you and do what they say. If you do this now, you will achieve many things as you grow up.
About
In our Kids Programs, we instill in our students the qualities that will help them throughout their lives.
Through the principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu the kids learn that Commitment, Respect, Focus, Self-Discipline, Hard Work and Effort always make for a rewarding experience and bring positive results. We build our classes in a way where the students know exactly how many classes they must attend and how they must behave in order to get stripes and belt promotions.
We specialize in empowering children who have never joined any physical activity or have been victims of constant bullying at school, into confident, respectful and skilled martial artists.
Consistency is paramount.
Inconsistent training will many times lead to discouragement and failure to develop passion for training.
All of the classes taught in our Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program are done by World Champion Black Belts who are always assisted by one or two assistant instructors.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Techniques
Our techniques aren't based on kicking and punching.
Nor are they based on katas or prearranged set of movements carried out on cooperative training partners. Instead, our kids will learn how to apply grappling techniques on a resisting partner who's not cooperating and is counteracting with his own moves. This is the main reason why they develop such high level of confidence within the first year. The way we train is much like how physical confrontations take place in the streets, opponent fully resisiting and trying to apply his/her own moves.
The philosophy behind our techniques lays in the following combat strategy:
Close the distance and clinch, take the attacker to the ground, establish a safe and dominant position, to then finish the fight with the application of chokes or joint locks.
Our Approach With Kids With ADD/ADHD
Studies have shown that people with learning differences such as ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), when faced with learning a physical/mental discipline such as martial arts, the brain begins to develop new pathways, and to use those pathways more efficiently than it did before. Many people are able to reduce their dosage of medication or quit taking it altogether. Our classes are always based on lots of repetition. Everything that we do from warm-ups to self-defense drills is developed to enhance focus, reflexes and induce second nature reactions overtime. Below, are some of the methods we adopt to ensure kids with ADD/ADHD benefit the same way as kids who don't have any learning difference.
Kids are generally paired up with a teammate closer in size and we use rounds of 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes depending on the task assigned by the Instructor.
This keeps the kids focused on their task long enough to learn and improve their skill, yet short enough where they won't get bored or distracted.
Consistency in class rules.
Every student must obey a set of rules while in class. Since bowing to greeting each instructor on the mat, to asking permissions for water, bathroom, ask questions and so on. This ensures everyone sets the example for everyone. Often these kids will resist any change and inconsistent rules, but since we're extremely strict in enforcing them, consistency will be accepted overtime.
With our staff's experience in learning and teaching Martial Arts since at a young age ourselves, we're able to incorporate different methods to get our point across.
This facilitates anyone with a learning disability to capitalize and improve their skill.
We can transform a technique drill into a "game" drill.
The kids think they are playing a game when in reality they are drilling the moves in a fun set up, where they continue to practice and improve.
Although our classes are extremely disciplined, we are very supportive and motivational as far as their achievements go.
Compliments when the tasks are done properly are a huge inspiration to anyone, and so we always offer our sincere praises when they accomplish something they have been working hard towards.
Bullying
Bullying can be extremely serious.
Bullying can affect the mental well-being, academic work, physical health and permanent social damage of children who are targeted. Children who are bullied are more likely than other children to have lower self-esteem; and higher rates of depression, loneliness, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. They also are more likely to want to avoid attending school and have higher school absenteeism rates.
Bullying can continue to be a behavioral problem for as long as the bully feels that other children are afraid of them.
We train our children to carry themselves with honor and confidence.
We teach them the necessary tools to resolve a confrontation with verbal assertiveness, but if the confrontation becomes physical, they are able to control the situation and defend themselves without hurting their attacker. This is one of the main differences between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and most forms of martial arts out there, the ability to control someone without the use of a single strike.
Recent Statistics
It's estimated that nearly 30% - or 5.7 million children - are involved in bullying, as victims, perpetrators, or both.
14% of those who were bullied said they experienced severe (bad) reactions to the abuse.
Each day 160,000 students miss school for fear of being bullied.
43% fear harassment in the bathroom at school.
Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Adult intervention - 4%. Peer intervention - 11%. No intervention - 85%.
Competition
We understand the difference between training for a competition and the Self-Defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.
While competition is not mandatory, nor expected of students, many students enjoy competing as means of testing themselves and their abilities.
With a competitive background ourselves, we encourage and support any student who wishes to step up and compete.
Tournaments are held all over California and our students always do well. We believe in hard preparation towards a competition and while entering tournaments isn't required, we wil demand complete dedication and focus during training camp for any event.
Students will be expected to pay their own entry fees and any extra costs associated with an increased training schedule (such as private lessons).
We notify all eligible students by e-mail on any upcoming competitions we'll be entering as a team. The email will include all events details as well as instructions on how sign up works.
The typical tournament is divided up into matches between the same belt ranks, and age and weight classes within the belt ranks. The format is always single elimination.
Students
Students are eligible to compete if:
They have been consistently training for at least 6 months.
They have been practicing diligently while in class (Instructor's discretion).
They have no behavioral problems in class, at school and at home.
If the last report card was exemplary.
They are current on their monthly dues.
Programs
Skill, attitude and character improvement take time. Among all success stories we have experienced and continue to experience, not one of them happened overnight. Martial Arts training is a commitment not only for the Instructor, but the students and parents as well. All of our programs have a 12-month minimum duration, which will give everyone the proper amount of time to learn, enjoy and benefit from everything professional Martial Arts instruction has to offer. We divide our Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program into five different groups:
4-5 Beginners (Mon/Wed/Fri at 4:00 pm)
6-8 Beginners (Tue/Thur/Fri at 4:00 pm)
6-8 Advanced (Tue/Thur at 4:00 pm and Fri at 5:00 pm)
8-10 Beginners (Mon/Wed/Fri at 5:00 pm)
8-11 Advanced (Mon/Wed/Fri at 6:00 pm)
12-14 Beginners (Tue/Thur at 5:00 pm and Sat at 10:00 am)
12-14 Advanced (Tue/Thur at 5:00 pm and Sat at 10:00 am)
4 - 6 Year Olds
This class is a preparation for the older age groups.
The main focus in this class is to teach the students to follow directions, develop their listening and obedience skills, improve their athleticism and last, but not least, have fun! Mat guidelines must be followed at all times, and are consistently reinforced. Improvement in discipline and respect are noticed after the very first week!
Physical exercises are designed to improve their strength, reflexes, awareness and hand-eye coordination.
They will learn how to create stronger and firmer bases of support, resist being pulled or pushed, basic takedowns and escapes from the bottom.
Competition is an option for the older and more experienced students from this class.
8 - 11 Year Olds
In this age group, the classes include more techniques performed at higher levels.
Warm ups are more intense and designed to improve their strength, explosiveness and overall conditioning. Martial Arts, in general, is an excellent cross-training activity for anyone who plays other sports such as Football, Soccer, Baseball, Wrestling and more.
Improvement in focus, athleticism and accountability for their actions are the main goal for the beginner's class in this age group.
They learn values such as perseverance, humility and team spirit. They learn to manage success and disappointment better. Bullying begins to be addressed in this age group and so are the actions that must be taken if they ever become a victim.
Live training sessions are a feature in every class once they complete their initial 12-Week Intro Program.
This specific training method helps them improve their confidence and self-esteem as they must attempt to execute their moves on resisting classmates. Technique based games will make class fun, yet productive. Although completely optional, competition is often a goal of many students and at this age group we train them accordingly.
All students of the Advanced 8-11 year old Program, have been training from 2 to 5 years.
They have all developed an amazing set of skills. There's absolutely no behavioral problems with any student here. And that is the first filtering criteria to enter this class. Children with great focus and dedication are the ingredients for a successful adulthood. Most students from this class compete two, three or five times a year in tournaments all over California.
12 - 14 Year Olds
This class is a preparation for entry into the adult program, which starts at 15.
Much like the previous age group, warm ups are designed to improve their athleticism so that they can perform at higher levels of competition, including in other sports.
The topic of bullying is reinforced in this program often and so are the approaches and techniques they learn to avoid this growing social problem in schools today.
Techniques are taught in more detail and drilled intensively, and resistance training sessions take place in every class at higher levels of intensity.
Competition is also a preference to many children in this age group.
12-Week Intro Program (3 months / Ages 8-14)
Every new student goes through a 12-Week Intro Program.
The program is cyclic, which means the student can start his or her training at any time, regardless of which week is in progress. With exception of the first two classes all techniques included here can be learned in any order. Our strict but friendly staff will make it extremely easy for any student to adapt to our classes, helping them feel comfortable and surrounded by positive and fun environment.
Subjects covered in the Intro Program go from learning how to fall and learning
how to develop a strong base of support, to takedowns, positional control, submission set ups and several escapes, standing and on the ground.
If the student misses one or more week from the Intro Program, there are two options:
a) Wait for that week to roll back in, or b) Schedule an Individual Lesson with the Instructor to cover techniques missed during that week. This option will keep the student on schedule to receive his or her first stripe after his/her third month of training.
Beginner's Program
Upon completion of the 12-Week Intro Program, students are ready to begin more frequent live training sessions.
They'll attempt to practice their moves on resisting opponents who are counteracting with their own techniques. Training usually begins standing and will continue until a submission is achieved by either student.
This training method is what contributes to a huge boost in their self-esteem and confidence.
Boys and girls train with each other, giving everyone the opportunity to practice with training partners of different ages (2, 3 years difference) and different body types (heavier, lighter, taller, shorter, etc...).
In this phase, we begin training students for competition.
Although optional, we'll only allow those who have been taking training seriously to enter it. Competing is a privilege and only those who have been showing a harmonious behavior in class, at school and at home will be allowed to do so.

Prior to each Belt Ceremony, students who are scheduled to be promoted, will receive a Notice of Intent to Promote Form from us. This is a feedback form to ensure the student is not only doing well in class, but at home and at school as well. The form is to be completed by the parents and a teacher from school. If student falls below parents and teacher's expectation, the belt promotion will be postponed until a later date. Belt ceremonies are held twice a year, in the Summer and Winter, before the New Year. All promotion of the students falls under the guidelines set by Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Consideration for promotion is given when a student:

The Origin Of Modern MMA
Amongst the first generation of Gracies born in Brazil, Carlos and his brother Helio Gracie, were people of small physical structure.
Upon learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu from Count Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos and Helio studied the application of leverage, technique, proper weight distribution and the human body's bone structure mechanics, and how it would apply on stronger, resisting opponents. They modified and enhanced the Japanese version of Jiu-Jitsu according to their studies and created what's now called, Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Matches with no time limit, rules or weight classes were put to place against masters of other Martial Arts to ensure the newly created system, was effective and realistic against anyone fully resisting, anytime, anywhere.
For over 60 years, the Gracie Family tested its techniques against all comers, successfully showing the world that
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the single most effective Self-Defense system the world has ever known.
More recently, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA was introduced in the USA by the Gracie Family in the early 90's, with the creation of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships).
With wins in multiple events around the world against practitioners of all sizes and disciplines, the Gracie Family revolutionized the world of Martial Arts with its fighting style, techniques and strategies. Jiu-Jitsu is studied by every MMA competitor in the world today, amateurs and professionals.
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
The application of Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in a fight strategically consists in take away your opponent's ability to win the fight and apply your own. When closing the distance, clinching and taking the fight to the ground, your opponent's ability to strike, escape or inflict you damage are greatly reduced. Knowing what possible counterattacks or escapes may be put to use by your opponents and immediately adjusting to them, is what will make the difference at the end. These reflexes and second nature reactions are rapidly reached by Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, since resistance training begins at three months, immediately after completion of the Beginner's Program. Only diligent practice with intense drilling, lots of repetition and constant study of the art, such second nature can be achieved.
Clinching and Staying Close
The longer you stand with someone, the higher are their chances of tagging you with an damaging strike.
And that may be the end of the fight. The stronger the opponent, the harder they will hit. So, if you want to apply the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu and take the fight to the ground, you need to make sure to stand with someone just long enough to set up a clinch and close the distance. In such close range, strikes became limited to knees and elbows, which can be easily neutralized with proper technique and movement.
In our opinion, learning how to manage the distance on an opponent who's trying to hit you and be able to execute takedowns are the most important aspect of a fight.
For that reason, all of our Jiu-Jitsu programs consist of lots of drilling from our feet.
Cross Training
We believe that cross training is a great way to expand your skills and knowledge, however we also believe that there's an appropriate time as when to do so.
Although, everyone is different, has different abilities, and can absorb things at different rates, we don't recommend anyone to begin their Martial Arts training learning two styles simultaneously.
All of our Jiu-Jitsu programs cover stand up fighting, but in a more conservative manner.
We teach our students to stay out of their opponent's reach, proper blocking and the appropriate time to clinch. While learning to strike can facilitate closing the distance on an opponent and taking them to the ground, standing and exchanging strikes with someone, is way too unreliable and could result in a big disappointment if you get hit.
One thing that cannot be forgotten is that We Must Have a Foundation, regardless of whatever fighting style we choose to follow.
If anything goes wrong, we'll have to rely on our defensive instincts, and that's when the guard will come into play in Jiu-Jitsu.
Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
With extensive experience in Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Judo and obviously, Jiu-Jitsu, Professor Crosley Gracie
developed an aggressive and effective fighting and teaching style that earned him the nickname "Hybrid Gracie" in Japan several years ago, while fighting professionally. Having trained with several members of the Gracie Family gave Crosley an unique mixture of styles that allowed him to create his own.
These personal training experiences helped his combat skills evolve from traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the highest level Mixed Martial Arts skill in the world.
In our Summer MMA Camps as well as our Individual MMA Program, you will learn warm up drills, concepts such as:
striking, striking to takedowns, counter- attacks, countering takedowns, clinching, top position over a downed opponent, the guard, and more.
Program Breakdown
This program was designed for everyone, from first time martial arts students to advanced students looking to sharpen and polish their skills. While this program only takes place once a year the Individual MMA Program is available year-round. Every class will cover a specific topic from each of these phases including escapes, positional control strategies, submission techniques and sweeps. All participants receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the camp. Current Jiu-Jitsu students who attend all 21 lessons will also receive a belt stripe. To understand what you'll learn, we broke the course down into 4 phases of combat:
Our Academy is owned and operated by a third generation Martial Arts gym owner and fighter. It is our goal to share with our students the good values of the Martial Arts; to help people reach high, yet attainable goals, and develop themselves as a whole person.
Our Black Belt instructors have combined an extensive background in competitive combat sports and athletics. We are always reinventing ourselves. Our personal training experiences allied with our continuous ability to learn new material, allow us to incorporate innovative techniques and fighting strategies into our curriculum. Thus helping our students learn faster and smarter, regardless of their athleticism or physical condition.
We provide a constructive and positive learning environment for students with great approach to personal excellence pursuit and realistic self-defense. We offer classes for everyone in the family starting at 4 years of age.
