While traditional (Western) Boxing originated in ancient Greece, New York City holds a special place in the sport's history as well. Church Street successfully brings this ancient martial art into the 21st century by combining many of the traditional elements of the boxing work out with many of the more recent developments in the sport and fitness in general. Our staff have a combined resume of well over 300 fights, so you can be sure that you are learning from those that have experienced training at the highest level first hand.
Muay Thai
Muay Thai Boxing or "Thai Boxing" originated in Thailand and is the official national sport of Thailand today. This sport is referred to as the "Art of the Eight Limbs" as it combines punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes (8 points of contact). Our Muay Thai classes are also taught by experienced instructors who have competed. Church Street has more Muay Thai Champions than just about any other club at both the amateur and professional level, so if we can get them in top shape just think what we can do for you!
Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ("BJJ") is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, taking the fight to the ground – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat an opponent. Often featured in mixed martial arts (MMA) matches, BJJ offers an effective counter to other combat styles. In addition to its effectiveness as a martial art, Jiu Jitsu practitioners also emphasize its impact on physical fitness and development of character in young people.

I've never done anything like this before; is experience required?
No, not at all. Nearly 80% of our members started at the club never having any type of "fight" training experience. While all our programs are designed by experienced fighters, we understand that many of our members are just looking to get in great shape.
Is it mostly guys training there or are there female members as well?
About 65-70% of our members are male; however there are plenty of female members at the club as well. We pride ourselves on our strong sense camradarie and community at Church Street, so regardless of your age, skill level, or sex, you'll feel welcome.
Is sparring / contact required?
No, absolutely not. Many of our members choose not to do it - but if you do, it will be done with great care. Safety is our primary goal at Church Street, so should you decide to step into the ring, it will be under strict supervision.
I would like to compete. Do you have a competition team?
both Muay Thai and MMA. We work closely with the Friday Night Fights NYC Series - so finding the opportunity to compete for our fight team is never a problem.
Is there a limit to how many classes I can take per day with the unlimited membership program?
No. Come as often as you want to whatever class that you want. We only ask that you get to class on time.

The gym was amazing, the staff great and I had a wonderful time with Josh and Nicco. Josh may be my new favorite coach and I really adore my coach in Tokyo. I am pretty sure that Nicco and I are long lost soulmates. And his Dad (Jenaro!) gave me the most significant advice I have received in boxing and in life in under 15 minutes. I will definitely be back. If anyone from your gym visits Japan or is planning to please don't hesitate to send them my way or ask any questions. I would be happy to recommend a good gym or a fantastic bar. Thank you very, very much for being so amazing from the beginning Marc, I was very apprehensive about cold calling a NYC gym but you made it an excellent experience."

Wanted you to know I did join your team last week while on vacation. I have to share how much I enjoyed myself. 1. What a great work out (wasn't sure I was going to make it the first day - but I came back) 2. I learned a lot of great tips to help me in my fight night nov 28th 3. Your guys made me feel so welcome right away - trainers and fellow boxers alike. Nicco and Jenaro are awesome! Please tell them Hi from Canada! I had so much fun - was quite proud of myself for making it there 4 days while on vacation! truthfully - one of the best experiences I have had in NYC! (and I have had quite a few) thank you to you and the guys - I very much appreciate it - and I am telling everyone I know about your gem gym!"

I joined Church Street because I wanted to learn how to box the right way from instructors that really know the sport. I've ended up getting into hands down the best shape of my life while doing that. In my opinion what sets the Church Street experience apart is the instruction. You can burn calories anywhere. In a Church Street class you aren't mindlessly blowing through combinations for an hour, you are being taught the reason behind the movement and for me that makes all the difference. In addition to laying a solid Boxing or Muay Thai foundation, Church Street is also a great place to work out. I successfully trained here for endurance events like the Tough Mudder and Spartan series. The classes are always a great work out and the staff are always helpful and professional. I'm very happy with my decision to join Church Street and plan to be a member for years to come.
Church Street Boxing Gym was established in 1997. To this day, it is still the largest “fight gym” in New York City. While our name suggests that our focus is on boxing, over the years we have incorporated Muay Thai and now Jiu-Jitsu into our classes.
We cater to men, women, and children of all skill and fitness levels. Our club is the only one in New York that requires all members of the staff have experience in the ring. We feel that regardless of whether you want to just get in shape or eventually step into the ring, it’s important that you have confidence in knowing that you’re learning from those who have been through it.
