Established in 2008 Named after longtime Ventura resident CHARLINE RICE, grandmother of owner Kevin Williams. Given her legendary stash of recipes, it was surprising that Charline Rice never opened a restaurant. Instead, the longtime Ventura resident preferred to cook for members of her family even as she juggled jobs at the JC Penney store in downtown Ventura and as a waitress at the Elks Lodge in Oxnard CA. But when grandson Kevin Williams and his wife, Sarah, decided to open a soul food-tinged eatery of their own in the summer of 2008, Rice gave them her name, her blessing and her recipe for rosemary chicken. And until her death April 22, 2009 of complications from Alzheimer's disease, one of Rice's favorite activities was asking one of her four children to drive her past Charline's Urban Tapas Lounge in Ventura at night, just to see her name up in lights.
