Camp in Our Life: our Passionate team of directors take pride in the lives they touch each summer
Billy & Judy Haynes
Camp Ton-A-Wandah has been owned and operated by members of the Haynes family for three generations. The second of Donnie Haynes's grandsons to follow in her footsteps, Billy Haynes and his wife Judy Haynes serve as the camp's executive directors. Billy is a graduate of Wofford College with a B.A. in psychology. Judy Haynes is a native of Jacksonville and an alumna of the University of North Florida with graduate studies in sociology as well as elementary and secondary education. Together, they are proud to carry on the tradition of guiding campers through action-packed days that create precious summer memories and lifelong friendships.
Garrett Graham
Garrett has been involved in camping since childhood and professionally since 1994. He came to Ton-A-Wandah in 2000 after hiking the Appalachian Trail and has served as the Mountaineering Director, Associate Director, and Director of Operation at Camp Ton-A-Wandah. Garrett believes that fun and safe camp experience can provide an integral role in child development. His leadership abilities go beyond the boundaries of camp and spill over into the greater camping community. He has served on the Board of the American Camping Association, Western North Carolina Camp Directors Association, and The Henderson County Young Leaders Program. Garrett is our man.
Elizabeth Harrison
From Cedar Baby to Counselor, Elizabeth is a true Ton-A-Wandah girl through and through! Elizabeth originally hails from Columbia, South Carolina, but spent the last six years in Montana, where she received her graduate degree in journalism and worked for three years as the Communications Manager at YWCA Missoula. Her love for children and passion for youth empowerment stems from her past work and volunteer experiences at the YWCA, as a child advocate, martial arts instructor and leadership development trainer. Recently, she had the opportunity to travel to Cambodia and Vietnam on a fellowship through the U.S. Department of State where she facilitated workshops for women nonprofit leaders and co-led a leadership development training for 90 Cambodian children between the ages of 9 and 15. Elizabeth is thrilled to be back home at Camp Ton-A-Wandah, where she can share her passion for camp and the TAW traditions she loves.
Elizabeth Larue
Elizabeth, better known as "Bizzy" at TAW, has been a summer camp girl her whole life! She is a graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in Music and Political Science. Elizabeth has worked at TAW for several summers as a Counselor and now will be joining the permanent program staff. Elizabeth has long held a passion for working with children and youth and has worked as a choral director for a children's show choir, a director for a high school leadership conference, and has volunteered and taught with local school programs, community theater camps, and church community programs. She is excited to join the team here at TAW and hopes to share her enthusiasm for camping and childhood development with all of the Ton-A-Wandah family!
History
Then and now, a Lot has changed since our summer camp was founded in 1933. Our mission has not.
Ton-A-Wandah first opened its gates as a private residential girls camp in 1933.
The camp's founder Grace B. Haynes, affectionately known as "Donnie" by campers and staff alike, greeted 65 campers that first year. Today, Camp Ton-A-Wandah welcomes 600 girls, ages 6-16, over the ten-week camp season. Our 75 staff members, including many Ton-A-Wandah alumnae, hail from across the country and around the world.
Diverse and dynamic, these leaders share a strong commitment to Ton-A-Wandah's core values: character, community, sportsmanship, work and fun.
Tribes
There are three tribes one of the oldest traditions at camp, bringing girls together in friendship.
Ton-A-Wandah's ties to nature and deep respect for the Native Americans who originally inhabited these mountains are the inspiration behind the alliance of the Three Tribes:
Cherokee, Navajo and Mohawk. The Three Tribes are among Ton-A-Wandah's oldest and most revered traditions, handed down from generation to generation.
Campers from all age groups comprise the tribes, and tribe affiliations endure throughout the girls' camping lives.
This cohesive, small group approach melts away the ten-year age difference among campers to create a strong sense of sisterhood and pride. Friendly competition throughout each session seals the common bond among tribe members but never breaks the chain of the Three Tribes.
Each Tribe elects a Chief to lead the group for the session and helps the camp staff make Ton-A-Wandah a better place to live.
Around the Council Fire, ceremonies are held several times each session. The campfire blazes, the girls join in song and dance, old mountain legends are shared and the crisp night air stirs new emotions.
Plans are made for the final days of the session when each tribe, wearing its colors, takes part in the Tribe Day Celebration.
Just for Juniors
The Little Ones, Special sessions and facilities for younger campers attending Ton-A-Wandah.
Each program at Ton-A-Wandah offers a Junior level of instruction and participation.
The counselors who work and play with Junior campers are selected from applicants whose interests and qualifications are geared to teaching young beginners.
All Ton-A-Wandah girls interact and share in camp activities
but the Juniors enjoy a space chosen and prepared with them in mind their own sports area, craft shop, theater, outdoor camping area, nature trails and Council Ring. In this protective atmosphere, Juniors are neither held back nor pushed forward, but encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace.
Setting
Home Sweet Home We Call North Carolina home. Come share the magic of camp in the mountains.
Nestled on the shores of its very own ten-acre lake in the pristine Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.
Camp Ton-A-Wandah, private residential summer camp for girls, is set amidst a breathtaking panorama of mountain ranges and emerald green valleys.
The property boasts 365 acres of mountainous terrain including streams
trails, campsites and a cascading waterfall. Here in historic Flat Rock, a few miles from Hendersonville, vacationers and campers return to enjoy the refreshing summer climate year after year. Nature's wonderland surrounds the camp, with over a million acres of designated preserves in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests in Western North Carolina.
Camp Ton-A-Wandah offers frequent trips to various area sites for picnics, hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and campouts.
Facilities
Dine on the water all of our facilities are top-notch and our dinning hall is as unique as our name
Campers live in wooden cabins that are fully screened.
Each cabin houses up to ten campers, two or three counselors and is equipped with two toilets and two sinks. Shower houses are separate.
Additional facilities include a large dining hall on the waterfront
indoor gym with stage, arts and crafts building, a horse barn with three riding rings, high and low ropes courses, 40-foot rock climbing wall, professional all-weather tennis courts, indoor riflery range, playing fields, little recreation hall, infirmary and lodge.
The dining hall has the unique feature of sitting at eye level with the lake.
The lake flows under the dining hall creating a pleasant cooling breeze and the continuous sound of the waterfall below.
Religious Life
Bone of Peace: Sunday service are the perfect time for campers to learn and grow together
God's extravagant gifts of natural splendor create the perfect backdrop and inspiration for Camp Ton-A-Wandah's rich spiritual life.
Interdenominational services are held each Sunday; these celebrations of thanksgiving and song are planned and conducted by the camp's senior staff members, counselors and campers. As an outward sign of unity, the traditional camp colors of green and white are worn by all on Sunday. Roman Catholics who wish to attend Mass in Hendersonville are accompanied by counselors and head staff members.
We believe wholeheartedly in residential summer camp as a enriching
enlightening and truly beneficial experience for children. We welcome your inquiry by phone, email or letter. The best way to get to know us, though, is by personal visit. We encourage interested families to tour our facilities firsthand.
Camp Creed
Our Camp Creed "I believe in friendships and the joy of service to others."
I believe in life as a great game.
I believe that I must uphold the colors in good faith, never alibi, but play the game fair and square to win.
I believe in friendships and the joy of service to others.
I believe in the flowers, the sunshine and the clouds, the glory of the sunset and in every beautiful thing.
I believe in the whisper of the leaves, the strength of the trees, the call of the birds, the inspiration of the towering mountains and in every great lesson nature teaches.
I believe in moments of silence and in nights of quiet when a girl can question her soul and find herself.
I believe in love and I believe in faith to the highest.
I believe in the guiding spirit of youth that looks upward and finds the best in life.
I believe in my better self because I believe in God.

Waterfront Fun
Paddle a canoe, jump on the blob, ride the website, or just splash about in our private lake.
At the heart of camp life is Lake Ton-A-Wandah, ten acres of sparkling, pure mountain water.
Waterfront activities are an integral part of Ton-A-Wandah's curriculum and a high point in each camper's day.
The first rule of all camp activities is "Think Safety," a motto that takes on added meaning on the waterfront.
No camper is allowed in the water except during regularly scheduled swim periods; all water activities are supervised by Red Cross-certified instructors. Modern teaching techniques that meet and exceed Red Cross standards ensure that even beginning swimmers master the fundamentals of water safety.
General swim on the waterfront is a daily treat for all campers and a chance to enjoy the three-lane water slide and legendary Ton-A-Wandah Blob!
This time allows swimmers a chance to perfect their strokes, delight in unstructured play and cool off after morning activities. A designated shallow area provides beginners with additional practice opportunities.
Canoeing is an ever-popular sport at Ton-A-Wandah.
Our lake is large enough to be a challenge to experienced canoeists without being too intimidating to the novice. No camper pilots a canoe until she passes the swimming and canoeing tests. These skills are taught in accordance with Red Cross guidelines.
Riding
Horse Back Ridin', Whether they're learning to jump rails or just keep their seat. girls go at their own pace.
Ton-A-Wandah's riding program is second to none, built upon a tradition of equestrian excellence.
Our stables are a place where beginners can learn the basics and experienced riders can seek out new challenges. The camp's solid reputation in this field has been earned through three quarters-century's commitment to hiring gifted instructors and maintaining an exceptional group of horses, none other than the University of South Carolina Equestrian Team's horses.
The program is based on the principles of Hunt Seat Equitation with constant emphasis on safety and respect for the animal.
Campers are instructed in the care and handling of horses, how to mount and hold the reins, and how to achieve a good seat and sure hands. Once the rider has control of herself and her mount, she learns to post a trot and canter on the right lead. Campers have the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned at the exciting Horse Show at the end of each session. Experienced judges award ribbons and prizes for achievement at every level.
Instruction in jumping is available to qualified riders who have written parental consent.
Our graceful jumpers love to clear the rails, and no rider ever forgets the thrill of sharing those leaps.
Riding for Juniors is structured with their special needs in mind.
Their classes are scheduled in harmony with the more advanced groups, and their horses are the most docile in the stable. This separate attention allows the younger girls to gain confidence and control without distraction.
Each girl progresses at her own pace, and there is no pressure to advance beyond basic equestrian skills.
Mountaineering
Biner, Bolt, Belay. Don't know what those words mean? Come to Ton-A-Wandah and find out.
The mountaineering program
at Ton-A-Wandah is quickly becoming one of our most popular programs, providing campers with a unique way to gain self- reliance, a respect for nature and a special sense of accomplishment. All campers are eligible for the First Year Mountaineering Program, which offers an introduction to outdoor challenges, including day hikes, the high and low ropes courses, rock climbing, mountain biking trips and overnight campouts. Girls get a taste of outdoor living and an opportunity to develop new skills.
The Advanced Mountaineering program is designed for older girls who seek to develop team and leadership skills.
High adventure activities include extended backpacking trips, rock climbing, white-water rafting, orienting skills, basic first aid and mountain hiking. These outings are supervised by a highly trained mountaineering staff with expertise in outdoor education and wilderness first aid.
An unparalleled sense of camaraderie and profound connection to the wonders of nature result in an unforgettable experience that unites campers and counselors.
Cooking and sleeping in the great outdoors: sharing songs and stories beneath a canopy of stars, building trust and strengthening teams; enhancing self-confidence and encouraging leadership: it's what Ton-A-Wandah's Mountaineering program is all about.
Landsports
Find your game. We offer individual, team, and target sports for both experts and beginners.
Ton-A-Wandah offers a wide selection of land sports, including
the team sports of volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer; the target sports of archery and riflery; and individual sports and activities such as tennis and gymnastics.
In an effort to bring out the best in each student, girls practice in small groups.
Instructors are chosen according to their teaching skills with beginners through advanced players. At all age and ability levels, the name of the game is good sportsmanship. Tournaments for many of the land sports are held with other camps each session and provide an opportunity for healthy competition.
Both target sports subscribe to the principles and practices of "Safety First."
Camp Ton-A-Wandah maintains membership in the Camp Archery Association and the National Rifle Association's Junior Corp. The precise balance of strength and concentration in the archer compliments the keen eye and delicate touch of the sharpshooter. Certificates of achievement are awarded for each level of proficiency attained.
The Arts
Express yourself. The arts & craft program gives every camper the opportunity to create a masterpiece.
There are many ways for a girl to express herself artistically at Ton-A-Wandah, from painting, basket weaving and wood burning to dance, drama and music.
The magic of creating something unique can be a refreshing change of pace from the array of physical activities. The Arts & Crafts department is staffed by accomplished professionals who can inspire even the youngest budding artist to create a thing of beauty.
The performing arts provide a wonderful way for campers to find fulfillment in front of an audience.
Campers produce musical and dramatic performances, build sets and design costumes. The dance, drama and music classes present a much-anticipated revue at the end of each session.
Our of Camp Trips
Campers will have the opportunity to enjoy adventures away from the Ton-A-Wandah campus and therefore broaden their camp experience.
These excursions include backpacking and day hiking in the Pisgah National Forest; whitewater rafting trips on one of the many rivers in Western North Carolina; rock climbing and rappelling; and visits to the world famous Biltmore Estate in Asheville, exciting Sliding Rock and the historic Carl Sandburg Home in nearby Flat Rock.
CIT
Program Purpose And Overview
The purpose of the Ton-A-Wandah Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is to give young women who are rising high school juniors and seniors an introduction to basic leadership dynamics, life-learning skills training, and the tools necessary to assess their own desires in becoming a camp counselor. Our CIT program is organized into six components: leadership skills worships, supervised cabin counselor assistance, activity lesson plan development and instruction assistance, all-camp evening program selection and planning, a three-day/two-night outdoor education experience and the selection, approval and completion of a group service project. Many CIT's are lifelong TAW campers who are familiar with the camp's core values, traditions, and daily routine. For others, it may be their first experience coming to Camp Ton-A-Wandah. No matter which way you come, the Counselor in Training Program still offers a great opportunity for those interested in developing their skills and leadership capabilities.
What Is A CIT?
CITs are neither campers nor counselors. Their position affords them select responsibilities and privileges which place them in their own unique role at camp. Unlike other campers, CITs pay a reduced tuition fee and receive additional instruction in many of the traditional camp activities as well as participate in CIT-specific training and events.
Why Apply?
CITs who successfully graduate from the program and show desire for future camp staff employment are given primary consideration for open Counselor Assistant positions the following summer. This is only guaranteed if their employment application is received by the camp office postmarked by December 15th. In addition, it should be noted that rising high school seniors may only apply for a Counselor Assistant position if they successfully complete the CIT program the previous summer. Otherwise, all employment applicants for cabin Counselor positions must complete a year of post-high school education.

Starter Camp
We understand that some of you may be new to the world of summer camps and need a way to "dip your toe before you swim." The one-week session in early early August was created for just that reason. This shortened session allows your daughter the chance to completely integrate into camp life and experience the spirit of Ton-a-Wandah in a smaller group setting. Limited to first-time campers ranging in age from 5-11, starter camp's capacity is 50 campers. During this week, your daughter will enjoy our most popular, traditional camp activities: archery, canoeing, riflery, horseback riding, arts and crafts, land sports, rock climbing, and swimming. She will also experience many of the same evening programs as the campers in our longer sessions. Because of the length of the session and the age of the campers, tribe activities are not a part of this week

Our Campers & Staff
Hand picked staff Ton-A-Wandah doesn't have ordinary campers, we why have ordinary staff?
Over 600 girls, ranging in age from 5 to 16 and hailing from across the country, will attend one or more of our three 3-week summer sessions.
Camp Ton-A-Wandah is especially proud of these girls, as more than 70% are returning campers. This high retention rate can be attributed to the extensive program opportunities available here, including activity classes such as archery, horseback riding, rock climbing, canoeing and land sports, just to name a few. In addition, frequent trips to various area sites for picnics, hiking, white-water rafting and campouts are program highlights as well. Seventy years in the business of summer fun have taught us, however, that our ongoing success has an awful lot to do with the exceptional caliber of our camp staff!
Our Staff
We employ over 70 staff members each summer. As a member of the Camp Ton-A-Wandah staff, you will become a very important person in the life of each child you meet. Our staff is comprised of a very diverse group of former campers, college students, teachers, musicians, artists, outdoor enthusiasts, coaches and others from all over the world who share our passion for and commitment to working with children and young women.
Camp Life
Our name in the Cherokee Indian language means "by the fall of water." Ton-A-Wandah's ties to Nature and deep respect for the Native Americans who originally inhabited these mountains are the inspiration behind the alliance of the three tribes (Cherokee, Mohawk and Navajo) that are among our oldest, most revered traditions, handed down from generation to generation. Friendly competition throughout each session seals the common bond among tribe members, but never breaks the chain of the Three Tribes. We have found through the years that this cohesive small group approach melts away the ten-year age difference among campers to create a strong sense of sisterhood and pride.

Camp Ton-A-Wandah has been owned and operated by members of the Haynes family for three generations. Ton-A-Wandah is a girls summer camp located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Our name means "by the fall of water".
